How to Care for a Pet Guinea Pig

Hogwood Pig Farm

Viva! Campaigns’ second investigation of Hogwood pig farm, Warwickshire, reveals not only the widespread neglect and abuse of pigs, but also the failings of supermarket giant Tesco to prevent pain and suffering on an almost unimaginable scale. Once again, heart-breaking footage unveils abhorrent conditions that cannot be ignored – overcrowding, pigs covered in excreta, barren, filthy conditions, animals abandoned to die, and cannibalism. The same callous abandoning of animals in need was filmed during Viva! Campaigns first investigation inside Hogwood.

Viva! discovered last year that Hogwood supplies pig meat to Tesco. Despite appalling conditions revealed inside Hogwood in 2017, Tesco refused to drop it as a supplier – reassuring customers that it takes animal welfare ‘extremely seriously’ and that it expects producers to meet ‘stringent, industry-leading requirements’. We now know that the problems at Hogwood have not gone away. Shockingly, in 2017, there were only 31 animal welfare convictions in Britain and these were mainly for ‘visible animals’.

The government has consistently failed to respond to the findings of Viva! Campaigns and clearly also doesn’t take animal welfare seriously. At Hogwood farm, there are around 15,000 pigs crammed into filthy, barren pens or in crates. At Hogwood farm, mothers are crated on cold hard concrete or metal floors with no comfort. Filth, faeces and a lack of maternal care are the first experiences of newly-born piglets at Hogwood farm.

Viva! Campaigns Ltd. We’re urging Tesco to drop this horror farm and we need your support to keep up the momentum.

Coccidiosis in Pigs

Coccidiosis is caused by a parasite known as coccidia, which usually attacks the cells of the small intestine. It usually affects suckling piglets from 7-14 days but may be found in growing and finishing pigs and boars that have been moved or housed in infected pens. SYMPTOMS. IN PIGLETS. A yellow or grey/green diarrhoea that becomes more liquid and may eventually turn bloody.

Although piglets continue to suckle they become dehydrated. PROGRESSION OF THE DISEASE. Some resistant oocytes will pass from the pig in the faeces. In the presence of heat and moisture they develop rapidly into infected sporulated forms that are resistant to many disinfectants. Once ingested, these sporozites enter the cells lining the small intestine where they reproduce both sexually and asexually, infecting new cells and producing more oocytes.

Poor hygiene, especially in farrowing houses or crates. In the case of an outbreak it is worth sending in a live infected piglet for dissection. TREATMENT. Some cocciostats such as Bacox 5% are partially effective although coccidiosis does not respond particularly well to antibiotics once the condition is established. PREVENTION.

Thorough disinfection of farrowing houses, crates, creeps etc after each litter. As Isospora is often resistant to disinfectants, steam or flame cleaning is ideal.

Do Guinea Pigs Carry Diseases Harmful to Humans?

They don’t spread diseases as frequently as other pocket pets like rats and mice, but unfortunately there are some illnesses guinea pigs can pass to their human companions. Most of these diseases aren’t serious in healthy adults, and the risk of contracting them is low, but a little prevention can minimize the risk. Often called LCMV, the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus is usually spread to humans by wild rodents like mice and rats, but can sometimes come from pet guinea pigs. In cases where it does happen, the guinea pig or other small pet has usually been exposed to an infected wild rodent. Like LCMV, leptospirosis is normally spread to humans by undomesticated rodents, especially rats.

Guinea pigs can carry and spread the bacteria especially if they are kept in conditions where they come in contact with infected rats. Most healthy adults and children have only mild symptoms and recover quickly from leptospirosis. Rodents and reptiles are known for spreading salmonella to humans. Guinea pigs can pass the bacteria to people through their feces. Guinea pigs can carry salmonella while still appearing to be perfectly healthy.

Keeping yourself, your guinea pig and his enclosure clean is the best thing you can do to stay healthy. Keep your guinea pig away from any place where human food is prepared or eaten.

YouTube removes ‘hate speech’ videos from InfoWars

YouTube has taken down four videos posted by the conspiracy theory channel Infowars. In the videos, the host of the channel, Alex Jones, criticises Muslim immigrants to Europe and also denounces a transgender cartoon. One of the clips shows a man pushing a child to the floor. The videos have been posted separately to the main Infowars website. Infowars could be permanently thrown off YouTube if it receives two more community strikes within the next three months.

The channel received a strike in February which has now expired. He has been widely criticised for repeating theories that the 9/11 attacks were staged by the US government. Mr Jones has also claimed that many of children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre were actors. In March this year, major advertisers including Nike, 20th Century Fox, Expedia and others stopped their ads appearing on Infowars after CNN revealed their content was running alongside its videos.
