Healthy guinea pigs secrete a white fluid from near the eye which they then groom over their faces with their forepaws several times a day. Despite their bright appearance guinea pigs have amongst the worst sight in caged pets and rely on movement and smell to make their way around. This is partly the reason for their very vocal personalities; they are relying on the noise to tell other guinea pigs where they are, what they are doing and how they are feeling; it is unlikely they would ever find each other in the wild otherwise! Guinea pigs can go blind for various reasons to do with eye health, but this is not the disaster it would be for many other pets; they can hardly see their paws in front of their faces at the best of times! Because guinea pigs like to forage about and snuffle in their bedding, they sometimes get injuries to the eye.

Eighty-two pigs shed STEC at least once, and the proportion of STEC-positive pigs varied across sites and cohorts. The median shedding duration of STEC in pigs was 28 days, consistent with our prior study. Among pigs shedding O59:H21 at least once, pigs in cohort B2 had a significantly longer shedding duration of 42 days compared to other cohorts. Our findings affirm that pigs are an important reservoir for human STEC infections, and that the circulating serotypes in a cohort and site management factors may significantly affect the prevalence of STEC. Molecular characterization of STEC isolates and epidemiological studies to identify risk factors for shedding in pigs are strongly warranted to further address the significance to public health and to develop mitigation strategies.
Slaughterhouses and Meat Inspection
The territory’s fresh meat supply comes from three licensed slaughterhouses, namely Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse, Tsuen Wan Slaughterhouse and Cheung Chau Slaughterhouse, with an average daily throughput of about 4,270 pigs, 48 cattle and 9 goats. Qualified health inspectors are stationed at the slaughterhouses to perform meat inspection and other related duties, including monitoring the operation of slaughterhouses and arrangement of meat delivery, etc. For pigs Ante-mortem Inspection – all pigs are inspected by the Ante-mortem Inspection Unit of the Slaughterhouse Section. Only meat and offal that are fit for human consumption will pass the inspection and unfit meat / offal / parts will be condemned. Ante-mortem inspection – all cattle are inspected by the Ante-mortem Inspection Unit of the Slaughterhouse Section.
Meat delivery – beef quarters, offal and other parts of cattle are sent to the Meat Despatch Bank, and then are collected and delivered by meat delivery vehicles to individual retail outlet. For goats Ante-mortem inspection – all goats are inspected by the Ante-mortem Inspection Unit of the Slaughterhouse Section. With the introduction of private sector commitments to manage and operate the slaughterhouses, the Department is responsible for the supervision, inspection and enforcement of meat hygiene therein. Before food animals are slaughtered, they are kept in the lairages for ante-mortem inspection carried out by the Ante-mortem Inspection Unit of the Slaughterhouse Section. During ante-mortem inspection, the welfare of food animals in slaughterhouses is also taken care of by preventing avoidable pain, suffering or excitement in the course of handling and waiting for slaughter.
If, upon inspection of any carcass and offal, the health inspector is satisfied that the animal is suffering from any disease or condition rendering the carcass or the affected parts unfit for human consumption, he/she shall condemn the animal carcass, offal or the affected parts, as the case may be, and order for their destruction. They must make regular inspections of all parts of the licensed slaughterhouses, including the slaughtering facilities, meat delivery vehicles and enforce the relevant legislation, such as the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance, the Food Business Regulation, the Slaughterhouses Regulation and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Ordinance.
Why You Should Avoid Eating Pork
Regardless of whatever religion or beliefs one may abide by, there exist real, practical, and scientific reasons as to why people should steer clear of eating pork. Often, the body will already be given enough of Omega 6 Fatty Acids through a regular, pork-free diet, and pork will usually tip the scale too heavily. All in all, though Omega 6 Fatty Acids are good for your body, the amount that regular servings of pork in your diet provide will often result in more bad than good. Aside from the possibly excessive amounts of Omega 6 Fatty Acids already found in pork, the act of processing and preserving pork is often aided by unhealthy chemicals and substances that can have an adverse affect on your body as well. One of the main components used in processing pork is sodium nitrate which, among other things, is used to give pork that deep red color, making the pork look fresher than it actually is. With all of the evidence pointing to the fact that processed pork is bad for your body, a person who still insists on eating pork would think that fresh pork should be the way to go.
Pork lovers aren’t going to catch a break with this one either, because even fresh pork has been documented to be just as unhealthy, and sometimes even worse, than processed pork. It is worth mentioning that all of these issues with eating pork already grant the assumption that the pork was cooked correctly and properly.
