A Guide to Guinea Pig Health Issues

This guide lists some of the common problems and symptoms to look for. One of the most common problems that can occur with a guinea pig is scurvy due to a lack of vitamin C. Unlike other pets, they can not synthesize their own vitamin C and must get it from their diet. It’s not always easy to detect if your guinea pig has lost weight. A few ounces of lost weight could lead to a problem.

You should know what the normal weight of your guinea pig is and check it occasionally. Be aware of the natural behaviors your guinea pig exhibits. Be aware that there are two medications that should never be administered to a guinea pig. Never assume that your veterinarian is familiar with treating guinea pigs. Although guinea pigs are delicate creatures from a health stand point it’s very easy to care for a happy healthy guinea pig if you know how.

You can avoid many problems by following a simple guideline for their care. Brian M Parker has raised guinea pigs from his childhood. You can visit his site for a free mini-course on guinea pig information.

Using Pigs to Improve Health of Humans – The Van Trump Report

Regenerative medicine is a broad field that includes tissue engineering but also incorporates research on self-healing – where the body uses its own systems, sometimes with help foreign biological material to recreate cells and rebuild tissues and organs. UVA explains that while there has been a tremendous amount of money and time spent on research and development of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, the ability to manufacture the materials on a large scale does not yet exist. Their hope is that the partnership with Smithfield can change that. Smithfield Bioscience is a business within Smithfield Foods that focuses on biotechnology in areas of human therapeutics, tissue fabrication and regenerative medicine. The Smithfield and UVA research is part of a consortium of around 100 organizations collaborating under the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute which aims to accelerate research and manufacturing innovations in the field.

Nipah Virus Infection

Nipah virus infection is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans. The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus. NiV was first identified during an outbreak of disease that took place in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998. In subsequent NiV outbreaks, there were no intermediate hosts. In Bangladesh in 2004, humans became infected with NiV as a result of consuming date palm sap that had been contaminated by infected fruit bats.

Human-to-human transmission has also been documented, including in a hospital setting in India. NiV infection in humans has a range of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory syndrome and fatal encephalitis. NiV is also capable of causing disease in pigs and other domestic animals. The primary treatment for human cases is intensive supportive care.
