Gastrointestinal health and function in weaned pigs: a review of feeding strategies to control post‐weaning diarrhoea without using in‐feed antimicrobial compounds
While approximately 50% of weaned pigs consume their first feed within 24‐h post‐weaning, in approximately 10% weaning anorexia persists for up to 48 h. Antibiotics and minerals, especially ZnO and CuSO4, are often included in the diets for weaned pigs to control post‐weaning diarrhoea and optimise growth performance. Reported decreased pepsin activity in the stomach mucosa at weaning without altering lipase activity while other studies reported increased pepsin and lipase activities in the stomach mucosa after weaning. Compared with sow‐reared pigs, weaned pigs have higher gastric pH value and this may be partly due to a lower acid secretion capacity of the stomach at weaning along with reduction in lactic acid production from lactose. Reporting a reduction in stomach emptying rate in pigs on 3 day and 14 days after weaning compared with the suckling pigs.
Gastric stasis has been documented in early‐weaned pigs as a contributing factor for PWD. A recent study investigated the effect of dietary protein level, ETEC infection and time of feeding after weaning on the microbial profiles in the GIT of weaned pigs. Generally, animal protein sources appear to have a superior feeding value than plant protein sources when fed to weaned pigs partly due to the fact that proteins of plant origin are less digestible than animal proteins. There is evidence that feeding a high protein diet immediately after weaning could cause protein maldigestion as the digestive system of weaner pigs is insufficiently developed to fully digest and absorb dietary proteins. These findings indicate that feeding a lower‐protein diet may not hinder the growth of pigs after weaning if they receive similar digestible energy contents and adequate levels of essential AA including valine and isoleucine.

Since the late 1990s, a growing number of ranchers have stopped sending their animals to the feedlots to be fattened on grain, soy and other supplements. For these reasons and more, grass-fed animals live low-stress lives and are so healthy there is no reason to treat them with antibiotics or other drugs. A major benefit of raising animals on pasture is that their products are healthier for you. Raising animals on pasture requires more knowledge and skill than sending them to a feedlot. Raising animals on pasture is dramatically different from the status quo.
Although the food is cheap and convenient, there is growing recognition that factory farming creates a host of problems, including: Animal stress and abuse Air, land, and water pollution The unnecessary use of hormones, antibiotics, and other drugs Low-paid, stressful farm work The loss of small family farms Food with less nutritional value. Animals raised in factory farms are given diets designed to boost their productivity and lower costs. A high-grain diet can cause physical problems for ruminants-cud-chewing animals such as cattle, dairy cows, goats, bison, and sheep. To prevent more serious and sometimes fatal reactions, the animals are given chemical additives along with a constant, low-level dose of antibiotics. Meat and eggs from these animals are lower in a number of key vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids.
When animals are raised in feedlots or cages, they deposit large amounts of manure in a small amount of space. When you choose to eat meat, eggs, and dairy products from animals raised on pasture, you are improving the welfare of the animals, helping to put an end to environmental degradation, helping small-scale ranchers and farmers make a living from the land, helping to sustain rural communities, and giving your family the healthiest possible food.
