FAO’s Animal Production and Health Division: Pigs and Human Health

Because pig production and pork consumption have a direct impact on human health, it is clear that a holistic approach under what is known as the “One Health” approach is needed to maximize the benefits of the sector and minimize potential threats to human wellbeing. The ability of Sus scrofa to convert by-products and waste from households or food processing into protein has been exploited since the animal was first domesticated. This form of nutrient “Recycling” is a significant source of high quality protein that has an important role in achieving household food security. Protein and micronutrients with high bioavailability in pork enhance the nutritional adequacy of plant-based diets if added in reasonable amounts. Human health risks can be related to production processes or to the consumption of pork and pork products. A major concern is the interface between pigs and humans and the range of pathogens that cause diseases in one or the other or both: transmission can occur through direct contact between animals and humans, and slaughter, processing and consumption also open possibilities of infection. Human health risks also arise from accumulations in pig carcasses of toxic substances ingested in their feed. Dioxins are a classic example of potentially carcinogenic substances that must be prevented from entering the feed-production chain so that they do not reach serious levels in the consumed product.

4 Common Health Problems in Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are usually sicker than you think once you notice something is wrong. Find a veterinarian in your area who is knowledgeable about guinea pigs before you are in a crisis. Your pet guinea pig will live 5-7 years, on average. If you start out with a healthy guinea pig and pay attention to simple but important care guidelines, piggies usually remain free of disease. Environmental changes, poor care, stress or neglect occurs, sick guinea pigs are not easy to cure. Here are some of the most common problems I see in my practice concerning guinea pigs – and how you can avoid them. A few dietary guidelines should keep your guinea pig in tip-top health. One of the most worrisome conditions in pet guinea pigs is gut stasis, where the GI tract slows down. Only a few antibiotics are safe to use in guinea pigs. Young pigs are particularly at risk if they came from a pet store or environment with poor husbandry, had a bad or stressful start to life, or were exposed to other pigs who are infected or carriers of respiratory disease. Intense scratching in a guinea pig usually indicates a mite infection. Guinea pigs can scratch so severely that they appear to have a seizure. Dermatophytosis, a fungal infection, is also seen in guinea pigs. Pet store products are not effective in eradicating guinea pig skin infections that are fungal or parasitic. If your guinea pig becomes ill, don’t delay in seeking veterinary care.
