What Doctors Want You to Know

That sounds like a lymph node, which could enlarge in response to an ear or sinus infection. If it eventually goes away completely, say in two to four weeks, then there’s no cause for concern, especially if you have symptoms of said infections. If it does not go away, you may want to have it looked at – sometimes we need to take these out for definitive diagnosis if they linger.

Genuine Micro Mini Teacup Pet Pigs!

VaccinationsProtecting your pigs from disease and critters is important, but can be very confusing. There is a lot of contradictory information found online and many vets are not used to caring for mini pigs. That is why we have put together this info to help you on your pig journey. There are times when your pig, no matter the size, can have a reaction to their vaccinations. To prevent a raised temperature, we give our pigs children’s liquid Ibuprofen.

You should worm your pig approximately every three months. There are a few products that you can use that are made specifically for pigs. They can also just be carriers on your pig and have any effect until your animal is stressed. The best way to administer Ivermectin is through a shot. Since most people are not comfortable administering Ivermectin this way, you can give it to your pig orally.

To administer Ivermectin orally, you must measure it based on weight. You will need to give Ivermectin twice, 10 days apart, to kill the mite life-cycle.

American Guinea Pig: The Vioxx/FDA Failure

The Vioxx story is one of the most widely publicized stories about the failure of the FDA to do its job. Back in May 1999, Vioxx was introduced into the market for the purpose of treating people with arthritis for their pain without the side-effect of other drugs which caused bleeding. The problem was that it had an increased ability to cause clotting which, in turn, caused heart attacks. The problem was further compounded by the fact that there was a study shortly after it went on the market that showed that, when comparing Vioxx with another drug that was used for the same type of treatment, Naproxen, that there was four times the incidence of heart attacks with Vioxx versus Naproxen. The problem was that the authors of the publication who were funded by Merck, the drug company, said that the difference was because Naproxen had a protective effect, the drug Vioxx was not actually causing those heart attacks.

Romania reports African swine fever in farm pigs

BUCHAREST – Romania has reported an outbreak of African swine fever at a breeding farm for pigs in the southern county of Tulcea, the national food safety authority ANSVSA said on Monday. It said all pigs on the holding, or 44,580, would be culled. In June, Romania reported an outbreak of African swine fever among backyard pigs in the same county. African swine fever is a highly contagious disease that affects pigs and wild boar and has spread in Eastern Europe in recent years. Hungary, Russia, Poland, Ukraine and Romania are among the countries affected, alarming governments and pig farmers due the pace at which it has spread.

Could New Pig Virus Pose Threat to People?

WEDNESDAY, May 16, 2018 – A new virus found in pigs may pose a threat to people, new research suggests. Researchers found the virus was able to infect cultured human cells and cells of other species in a lab. The pig virus, known as Porcine deltacoronavirus, was first identified in China in 2012. Two years later, it was discovered in the United States during an outbreak of diarrhea among pigs in Ohio. Young pigs infected with the virus develop severe diarrhea and vomiting that can be deadly.

The ability of a virus to jump between species depends on its ability to find receptors on the cells of people or animals, explained the study’s lead researcher, Scott Kenney. He’s an assistant professor of veterinary preventive medicine at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. To investigate the pig virus’ potential to jump to other species, researchers at Ohio State and Utrecht University in the Netherlands honed in on a particular cellular receptor called aminopeptidase N. The study, published online this week in the journal PNAS, showed the virus could bind to the receptor in human cells, and to cells from cats and chickens. These were cells cultured in a lab setting.

The researchers added that their findings don’t prove that the pig virus can cause disease in other species. The team plans to continue its investigation, looking for antibodies in human blood that would indicate that the pig virus may have already infected people. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides more information on how diseases spread between animals and people.

Guinea Pigs Harbor a Hidden Health Hazard

The bacteria, Chlamydia caviae, normally causes pink eye in guinea pigs. Three adults in the Netherlands wound up hospitalized for pneumonia after contact with guinea pigs resulted in their infection with C. caviae. Dr. Steven Gordon, chair of infectious disease at the Cleveland Clinic, said the cases are a reminder to practice good hygiene around pets.

The two people who landed in the ICU had guinea pigs as pets, and those pets had been sick with respiratory symptoms. The man had two guinea pigs, while one of the women had 25, researchers said. The other woman worked in a veterinary clinic, where she cared for guinea pigs suffering from pink eye and nasal inflammation. Doctors detected Chlamydia bacteria in samples drawn from the patients and figured it was Chlamydia psittaci, a bacteria carried by birds that’s known to cause a form of pneumonia called psittacosis, Ramakers said. The analysis also matched the DNA of C.

caviae in one of the patients’ guinea pigs to the bacteria that had infected its owner. Not all guinea pigs carry C. caviae, but many likely do, Ramakers said. An earlier study found the bacteria’s DNA in 59 out of 123 guinea pigs with eye disease. Don’t give away your favorite pet guinea pig just yet, though.

People who want to protect themselves should get their guinea pigs treated by a vet if their pet appears ill, especially if it is suffering from pink eye or respiratory illness, Gordon said.

Pigs for small farms: Journey to Forever

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Japan says 65% of pigs sent to abattoirs are sick. The farmer chased the pigs out of the house onto the field. Several pigs began digging in the soil with their noses. Pigs had cleared the trees and grass, eaten it all, and quickly turned poor red mountain soil into fertile black soil rich in microorganisms, and the microorganisms then became good food for pigs. He told me that costs are low farming pigs this way, and the pigs grow happily and healthily with plenty of exercise and lots of sunshine.

Pigs bred in modern housing are very prone to white scour – prolonged diarrhoea. Pastured Pigs – Greg Gunthorp of Indiana is a fourth-generation pasture pork producer. Email mailing list for the exchange of ideas about raising pigs on pasture. This is what pigs were made for, not to have rings in their noses. Htm The Kunekune is a cute and friendly little pig from New Zealand, smaller than other pigs and with one other big difference – they’re grass eaters.

Pigs are found everywhere, often kept by peasants, but methods and function differ widely. Also covers scavenging pigs and tethered pigs, and uses of liquid manure and dung.

Health Professional Fact Sheet

The amount of selenium in a given type of plant-based food depends on the amount of selenium in the soil and several other factors, such as soil pH, amount of organic matter in the soil, and whether the selenium is in a form that is amenable to plant uptake [2,6,8,9]. As a result, selenium concentrations in plant-based foods vary widely by geographic location [1,2]. For example, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Composition Database, Brazil nuts have 544 mcg selenium/ounce, but values from other analyses vary widely [10-12]. The selenium content of soil affects the amounts of selenium in the plants that animals eat, so the quantities of selenium in animal products also vary [2,5].

However, selenium concentration in soil has a smaller effect on selenium levels in animal products than in plant-based foods because animals maintain predictable tissue concentrations of selenium through homeostatic mechanisms. Supplementation with any of these forms only affected plasma selenium levels and not glutathione peroxidase activity or selenoprotein P concentration, confirming that study participants were selenium replete before they began taking selenium supplements. According to an analysis of data from the 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the average daily selenium intake in Americans aged 2 years and older from foods is 108.5 mcg and from both foods and supplements is 120.8 mcg. According to an analysis of NHANES data from 2003-2004, the mean serum selenium concentration in U.S. adults aged 40 years or older is 13.67 mcg/dL.

Men have slightly higher serum selenium levels than women, and whites have higher levels than African Americans [16-18]. Selenium intakes and serum concentrations in the United States and Canada vary somewhat by region because of differences in the amounts of selenium in soil and in local foods consumed [6,19]. Observational studies have found an association between lower selenium concentrations in people with HIV and an increased risk of cardiomyopathy, death, and, in pregnant women, HIV transmission to offspring and early death of offspring [25-29]. Some randomized clinical trials of selenium supplementation in adults with HIV have found that selenium supplementation can reduce the risk of hospitalization and prevent increases of HIV-1 viral load; preventing HIV-1 viral load progression can lead to increases in numbers of CD4 cells, a type of white blood cell that fights infection [30,31]. Additional clinical trials are needed to better understand the contributions of selenium from food and dietary supplements to cardiovascular health.

In one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 100, 200, or 300 mcg/day selenium for 6 months in 368 healthy adults aged 60 to 74 years had no effect on thyroid function, even though plasma selenium levels increased significantly. Ophthalmic outcomes improved in 61% of patients in the selenium group compared with 36% of those in the placebo group, and only 7% of the selenium group had mild progression of the disease, compared with 26% of those in the placebo group. Acute selenium toxicity can cause severe gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms, acute respiratory distress syndrome, myocardial infarction, hair loss, muscle tenderness, tremors, lightheadedness, facial flushing, kidney failure, cardiac failure, and, in rare cases, death [2,6]. The FNB has established ULs for selenium from food and supplements based on the amounts of selenium that are associated with hair and nail brittleness and loss. Serum selenium levels in the US population: Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1994.

Papua New Guinea culture

Human remains have been found in Papua New Guinea that date back to about 50,000 years ago. The principal island of Papua New Guinea was discovered around 1526-27 by Don Jorge de Meneses. Although European navigators visited and explored the Papua New Guinea islands for the next 170 years, little was known of the Papua New Guinea inhabitants until the late 19th century. Following the surrender of the Japanese in 1945, civil administration of Papua as well as New Guinea was restored, and under the Papua New Guinea Provisional Administration Act, 1945-46, Papua and New Guinea were combined in an administrative union to become the country of Papua New Guinea. Following the passage of the Papua Act of 1905, British New Guinea became the Territory of Papua, and formal Australian administration began in 1906.

As noted, it was later joined in an administrative union with New Guinea during 1945-46 following the surrender of Japan, and Papua New Guinea was born. During World War I, Papua New Guinea was occupied by Australia, which had begun administering British New Guinea, the southern part, as the re-named Papua in 1904. The New Guinea campaign was one of the major military campaigns of World War II. Approximately 216,000 Japanese, Australian and American soldiers, sailors and airmen died during the New Guinea Campaign. Variations in village construction, dialect and dress are common in country areas while annual Sing Sing shows, part of the Papua New Guinea Cultural Events Calendar, see villagers from around the country demonstrate their singing, dancing and elaborate bilas.

The shows at Goroka and Mount Hagen are among the country’s most impressive, attracting thousands of spectators to Papua New Guinea each year. More than 800 local languages exist in Papua New Guinea – about a third of the world’s indigenous tongues. Taking a Papua New Guinea tour to stay in a village is a wonderful way to learn more about the local culture and lifestyle, during your Papua New Guinea holiday.

Diarrhea in guinea pigs is caused mainly due to excess feeding of fruits and green vegetables, infections, and other intestinal complications. Guinea pigs are susceptible to excess heat, and keeping them in an overly-heated room can prove to be fatal. If you are breeding guinea pigs, then make sure that you are not leaving it till too late; it can prove to be fatal to the guinea pig. Mange mites commonly lead to hair loss and persistent scratching in the pigs. Guinea pigs are strictly vegetarians, and vitamin C is an important constituent of their diet.

Health Care Bay of Pigs? – Cervantes

President Obama is getting a clear message from his allies that he may have to scale back his health care goals in order to win passage from Congress. Mr. Patrick recently had to impose cuts in the program, which has seen large cost overruns. Concern about the floundering Obama health care plan is rooted in memories of HillaryCare, the Clinton administration’s bold attempt to remake health care in 1993. First Lady Hillary Clinton was offered several compromise solutions that would have gotten her much, but not all, of what she wanted.
