China culls thousands of pigs as African swine fever spreads – Archy news nety

More than 14,500 pigs have been culled in an eastern Chinese city, officials said Wednesday, as the world’s largest pork producer scrambles to contain an outbreak of African swine fever. Beijing reported its first case of the disease in early August, and since then the virus has spread to pigs in several cities across China, requiring authorities to destroy large numbers of hogs. African swine fever is not harmful to humans but causes haemorrhagic fever in domesticated pigs and wild boar that almost always ends in death within a few days. There is no antidote or vaccine, and the only known method to prevent the disease from spreading is a mass cull of the infected livestock. The government of the port city of Lianyungang, about 500km north of Shanghai, said it had culled the swine by Monday night in a quarantined area.

Authorities said they had inspected four million other pigs in the city and found no other abnormalities. In a report to the World Organisation for Animal Health, Beijing said an emergency plan had been launched and control measures taken to halt the spread of the disease. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation warned in May of the risk of the spread of African swine fever from Russia. Around half of the world’s pigs are raised in China, and the Chinese are the biggest consumers of pork per capita, according to the FAO. African swine fever is not harmful to humans but causes haemorrhagic fever in domesticated pigs and wild boar.

Bioengineered Lungs Successfully Transplanted Into Pigs

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 1, 2018 – Lab-grown lungs have been successfully transplanted into pigs with no apparent medical complication for months after the procedure, researchers report. This line of research on bioengineered lungs could eventually lead to more options for people who need a lung transplant, according to the team at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The lungs, which were tissue-matched to each individual pig, were grown in the laboratory. Each pig received one bioengineered lung and retained an original lung. As early as two weeks after being transplanted, the bioengineered lungs created a network of blood vessels they needed to survive, according to the study published Aug. 1 in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The researchers assessed the development of lung tissue and integration of the bioengineered lungs at 10 hours, two weeks, one month and two months after the transplants. The study was meant to assess how well the bioengineered lungs adapted and continued to mature within a large, living body. It didn’t evaluate the levels of oxygen the lungs provided to the pigs. Research in animals often doesn’t pan out in humans, so further research is required. The researchers said it may be possible to grow lungs to transplant into people within five to 10 years.

ovarian cysts and GOOD vets

I just really wanted to stress to everyone how important it is to have a GOOD cavy savvy vet and also for those with female pigs to be aware of the risks of ovarian cysts. Our original vets wanted to spay but we wanted someone more specialised to do it. I got in touch with my local rescue and was recommended a vet that sees all their piggies. Rosie got two hormone injections and her recovery was almost instantaneous, all thanks to this super vet! I dread to think what would have happened had we gone ahead with the spay recommended by the first vets.

We took the 60 mile round trip to see Mr. Good Vet again and this time by physical examination alone he detected a pea sized lump on her left ovary. We scheduled more hormone appointments for her at our closer vets. Three more of our pigs have presented with signs of ovarian cysts. Our Good Vet suggested we stick at it just a little longer, which we did, and we got the result we wanted.

Rosie was 1.5 years old when first diagnosed, it’s not just older ladies, younger girls CAN get ovarian cysts. If your female is grumpy, aggressive, losing hair, has a strange change in weight or has crusty or enlarged nipples get her to the vet! The statistics are not known exactly but vary between 50-90% of all intact female guinea pigs developing ovarian cysts. A good vet is worth his or her weight in GOLD – a good vet can save your piggie’s life!

Fit Guinea Pig

I want to share with you guys something I came across while having a fun day at the beach with my friend. My friend is a gymnastics instructor and for us, going to the beach is an opportunity to be silly and practice poses such as handstands, bridges, tumbles etc. I suggested for us to go to Santa Monica beach because there is this area there called Original Muscle Beach right next to the Santa Monica Pier. Original Muscle Beach is an area filled with bars, metal rings, and ropes where people go practice acrobatics, bodybuilding, or just to goof around and have a good time. We noticed a group of people doing handstands by this grass area so we decided to walk over and see what it was all about.

A group of people were having what they call an Acroyoga Jam. A jam is when a lot of people gather and start practicing among each other, and yes it is free. This group in particular meets every Sunday around noon and they stay until sunset practicing for hours and just having an all around good time. These people started explaining to us how it is yoga combined with acrobatic moves. These people were so welcoming that they started teaching my friend and I some moves.

If you’re not familiar with Acroyoga, I recommend looking up Youtube videos. So to sum it all up, if you want to try something unique and fun while still getting a great workout, I highly recommend Acroyoga.

Oriez is one of thousands of Americans who volunteer their body and time to be a part of a scientific experiment. People who volunteer for these trials can be anyone from a healthy student who needs to make a little extra cash to a desperate cancer patient hoping an experimental drug really can help. While the health ministry is still investigating what happened, five people were hospitalized and one volunteer died. All these volunteers started the study healthy and now some may leave with a permanent disability. That’s good news for people like volunteer Steve Reszka.

The Buffalo, New York, resident has diabetes and high blood pressure and saw an ad asking for diabetes drug trial volunteers a couple of years ago. To be a volunteer, he sat for a couple of hours of preliminary tests. The tests themselves are designed to keep a volunteer informed about the risks. A trained professional walks the volunteer through instructions page by page and a volunteer signs off on each one. Gortler is grateful for the volunteers, but he said he personally wouldn’t volunteer, particularly in an early-stage trial.

The Clinical Center Patients’ Bill of Rights which protects you when you volunteer also explains your rights. While the drug trial Steve Reszka was a part of didn’t work out, he said he still left the experience feeling good about what he did and he’d volunteer again.

Mini Pig Health: The Basics

Once you’ve contacted a vet or you are at an animal hospital with your pig, sure post about your situation then, but if it’s a true emergency, please don’t waste time on FB trying to figure out what may be wrong with your pig. Normal rectal temperature for a mini pig is between 99-101. You should take your pigs temperature when the pig is NOT sick to get a baseline. If your pig isn’t eating or drinking…something is wrong. If your pig is running a fever and lethargic…something is wrong3.

Please read further down to learn more in depth about specific pig diseases and illnesses. If your pig isn’t eating or drinking, lethargic and has a fever…your pig needs to be seen by a vet ASAP. The 3 most common illnesses are erysipelas, pneumonia and leptospirosis and with prompt medical intervention, all 3 are treatable/curable. Take advantage of the pig health forms we have available for you to download by clicking here. Another useful tool I have used in the past, AFTER calling my vet, is The Pig Site’s disease problem solver.

Normal temp for a mini pig older than 3 months old is 98-100 normally, but you should take a baseline temp for your pig when your pig is NOT sick so you know what is normal for your particular pig. Each pig may have a slightly different baseline core body temp. You will not give your pig an injection unless directed to do so by your veterinarian, but if you are directed to inject your pig with a medication, this picture should help you identify the most appropriate area to give that injection.

Scientists Just Transplanted Lab-Grown Lungs into Pigs

Scientists from the University of Texas Medical Branch just successfully transplanted lab-grown lungs into pigs – an exciting development towards being able to bioengineer lungs for humans someday, too. To create these lungs, researchers first made a lung skeleton. They used sugar and detergent to remove the cells and blood from pig lungs, leaving them with a protein structure. Next, scientists added cells from the recipient pig lungs to each scaffold, and let them grow over 30 days. When the lungs were ready, they made the transplant into four recipient pigs.

Within two weeks, the transplanted lugs began to develop the blood vessel networks they need to survive. The animals seemed to take their lab-grown lungs well, showing no signs of rejecting the foreign organs. Researchers will continue to study the effects of the transplanted organs long term. If their work is successful, it could change organ transplation in the future. Currently, there’s over 1,400 people in the U.S.

awaiting lung transplants. Researchers believe they could be five to ten years away from being able to transplant lab-grown lungs to patients in compassionate use circumstances. Bioengineered organs could be an improvement from human donated organs: lungs grow from the recipient’s own cells are less likely to get rejected by the body, and being able to grow new lungs in a lab could put an end to organ shortages.

Genetically modified pigs able to resist costly disease – Scientific Inquirer

Scientists have produced pigs that can resist one of the world’s most costly animal diseases, by changing their genetic code. Tests with the virus – called Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, or PRRS – found the pigs do not become infected at all. The animals show no signs that the change in their DNA has had any other impact on their health or wellbeing. The disease causes breathing problems and deaths in young animals and if pregnant sows become infected, it can cause them to lose their litter. The virus infects pigs using a receptor on their cells’ surface called CD163.

The team collaborated with Genus PLC, a leading global animal genetics company, to produce pigs with the specific DNA change. Previous studies had shown that cells from these animals were resistant to the virus in lab tests. This is the first time researchers have exposed these pigs to the virus to see if they become infected. Other groups have used gene editing to create PRRS-resistant pigs by removing the whole CD163 receptor. Genetically modified animals are banned from the food chain in Europe.

It is not clear what regulations would apply to gene-edited animals as the approach is different. GM techniques have been controversial because they can involve introducing genes of other species into an animal.

Tea cup pigs? Here’s the truth from Pete the Vet on TV3’s Ireland AM

A baby pig pet sounds so charming, and the idea of a pig that never gets much bigger than a small dog sounds interesting. Pigs are at least as intelligent as dogs, and they often have huge personalities. The truth is that there’s no such things as pigs which stay the size of a teacup. A large, boisterous animal like this is a complex creature to have living living in. For this reason, many people get cute piglets only to discover that it’s impossible to keep them as they grow older and bigger, and they have to rehome them.

Pigs are social, playful, protective animals who love the company of their own species, and they love to be outside, playing, rooting around in woodland, engaging with their environment. You also need to consider legal aspects: as farm animals, pigs are tightly regulated, including travel, living conditions and other issues. You may also struggle to find a vet who is experienced in treating pigs as pets.

Pigs At Fowlerville Fair Test Positive For Swine Flu

The Livingston County Health Department reports the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development identified pigs at the Fowlerville Fair that tested positive for swine flu, or influenza A. The Fowlerville Fair Board has taken steps to isolate infected pigs to prevent additional exposure. Infected pigs began showing symptoms Thursday evening and laboratory results were confirmed late Friday afternoon. At this time, there are no reported human illnesses. The Health Department and Fowlerville Fair Board are reaching out to swine exhibitors, their families, and anyone who visited the swine barn at the fair to notify them of possible exposure to infected pigs.

The Health Department is also instructing healthcare providers in the area to watch for patients with respiratory symptoms who report exposure to swine or who visited the fair. Swine flu can spread quickly between pigs and while rare, can pass to humans through droplets in the air when sick pigs cough or sneeze. Human symptoms are similar to those of seasonal flu and can include fever, cough, runny nose, and sometimes body aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Symptoms usually appear within three days of exposure but can occur up to 10 days. Currently there is no vaccine for swine flu, nor will the seasonal flu vaccine protect against swine flu; however, antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu and Relenza, are said to be an effective form of treatment.

The Health Department’s full release can be viewed at the attachment below.

Scientists Successfully Transplant Lab-Grown Lungs Into Pigs

Thanks to medical technology that has helped lead to the development of organ transplants, this has resulted in many lives being saved, where organs such as hearts, lungs, livers, and kidneys have over the years been successfully transplanted from one person to the other. The problem with transplants is that you need to find a donor that matches you. Given that some organs cannot be transplanted from a living person to another, this narrows down the availability options even more, which is one of the reasons why the black market on organs is thriving. There is a glimmer of hope on that horizon, thanks to scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch where they have successfully managed to transplant lab-grown lungs into a pig. Of course this is a long way off from creating lungs that can be transplanted into humans, but the fact that it was successfully transplanted into a pig who survived is a huge step.

Like we said, there is still a long way to go before this tech can be applied to humans, if at all. This is because there needs to be studies done to see how long/durable these lab-made lungs hold up over the years, and if there might be any negative side-effects.

Scientists Created Lab-Grown Lungs And Transplanted Them Into Pigs

Lab-grown lungs were successfully transplanted into pigs for the first time. Scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch are celebrating a breakthrough as they successfully transplanted lab-grown lungs into pigs. This took 30 days inside a bioreactor tank, where the lungs were pumped with nutrients. During the experiment, the pigs’ left lungs were transplanted alongside a bioengineered lung. While the lungs functioned during the study, they weren’t connected to pulmonary arteries.

The transplanted lungs developed blood vessels and connected to the rest of the pigs’ vascular system, according to Popular Science. Back in 2014, Joan Nichols and her team bioengineered a human lung. Engineered pig lung transplant ‘a success’ https://t. The researchers hope that the technology could one day be used for human lung transplants. Great!

Scientists transplant lab-grown lungs into pigs

In a landmark study of regenerative medicine, researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch have transplanted bioengineered lungs into adult pigs, with no visible complications. Lung transplants are particularly problematic, with the number of people requiring one increasing worldwide, while the number of available transplantable organs has decreased. Lungs are harvested from only 15 percent of all cadaveric donors, whereas kidneys and livers are harvested from 88 percent and hearts from 30 percent of deceased donors. The first human lung transplant procedure was performed in 1963, and the recipient survived 18 days, ultimately succumbing to renal failure and malnutrition. Over time, the number of lung transplant procedures has increased.

In 2014, they were the first to grow lung cells in a lab, and their method has been refined ever since to the point that the team is now able to bioengineer transplantable lungs. For 30 days, the bioengineered lungs grew in a bioreactor before being transplanted into adult pigs. In just two weeks, the transplanted lungs had established a stable network of blood vessels, which it needs in order to survive. All of the pigs that received the bioengineered lung remained healthy. The team did not measure how much oxygenation the lungs had provided, which will be researched in the future.

If all goes well, Nichols and Cortiella hope to grow and transplant bioengineered lungs into people within 5 to 10 years. Bioengineered lungs are a great testing medium for experimental drugs, another line of work that can save countless lives.

Over 1,000 pigs seized for harmful agents

A livestock official inspects a pig farm in Ratchaburi province for harmful agents on June 24, 2018. The Livestock Development Department seized more than 1,000 pigs in another check in Chachoengsao on Wednesday. More than 1,000 pigs have been seized from two farms in Chachoengsao’s Muang district after testing positive for harmful agents administered to increase lean meat production, according to the Livestock Development Department. More than 100 department officials were deployed to examine five pig farms and eight slaughterhouses in the district on Wednesday to determine whether they had fed the substances in question to their animals. The five farms are currently raising 7,659 pigs in total.

A total of 1,089 pigs raised in two of the farms returned positive results for the harmful agents through urine testing. The agents are known as beta-agonists and examples would include salbutamol and clenbuterol. Officers said 160 pigs in the eight abattoirs tested negative. Mr Sorawit said the operation zeroed in on areas where pig farming clusters as well as slaughterhouses and meat-selling facilities are concentrated. The use of such agents to feed livestock is punishable by up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to 60,000 baht, as laid out in the Animal Feed Quality Control Act.

Thailand has long held a zero-tolerance policy on the use of beta-agonists, including ractopamine. The drug has been linked to agitation, dyspnea, cardiac issues, stress, disabilities and death in farm animals.

Ocasio-Cortez Channels FALN on Puerto RicoThe American Spectator

She delivered herself of several tweets on Wednesday that suggest she believes Puerto Rico was an independent and sovereign nation before the U.S. arrived in 1898. 120 years ago today Puerto Rico was invaded and made a colony of the United States. In 1917, all Puerto Ricans were granted U.S. citizenship. In a referendum held last year, the voters of Puerto Rico supported U.S.

statehood in a landslide. The subjugation and treatment of Puerto Ricans as 2nd-class citizens of the United States is nothing new. The first was passed in 1917, and granted U.S. citizenship to all Puerto Ricans. It is estimated that almost 5,000 Puerto Ricans have died in the wake of Hurricane María.

More than 640 employees from other federal agencies temporarily left their jobs in the U.S. to support the Puerto Rico response. More than 63 million meals and snacks were provided to Puerto Rico. FEMA is working closely with the Puerto Rico Department of Health and HHS to provide temporary facilities while any remaining damaged health clinics are repaired and rebuilt. We mortals are not able to simultaneously view the world through the eyes of a girl from the Bronx who grew up in Westchester and is now a Puerto Rican woman.

Nor have we been inculcated with the Marxist ideology that allows us to parrot FALN propaganda without thinking of the dead and maimed.

Porky Pig is an animated cartoon character in the Warner Bros. Porky only has a minor role in the film, but the fat little stuttering pig easily stole the show. Unlike previous Looney Tunes characters before him such as Bosko or Buddy, Porky was a distinctive character. Actually, Friz Freleng claims to have given Porky Pig the stutter. In 1964, Porky got his own Saturday morning cartoon, The Porky Pig Show which ran until 1967.

Another such collection was the 1986 film, Porky Pig in Hollywood, which ran in art and college theaters. In the 1990s animated series Tiny Toon Adventures, Porky appears as the mentor of Hamton J. Pig. Porky appears in the movie Space Jam and collaborates with Bugs Bunny and the rest of the other major Looney Tunes characters in challenging the Nerdlucks to a basketball game. Porky is the star of the Super NES video game Porky Pig’s Haunted Holiday.

A baby version of Porky appears in Baby Looney Tunes’ musical numbers. Porky has a descendant in Loonatics Unleashed named Pinkster Pig who started off as an old ally of Danger Duck, but became a villain when he was adopted by Stoney and Bugsy. Porky Pig will appear in Wabbit voiced again by Bob Bergen.

Pigs Could Soon Be Considered as an Organ Donors for Humans

Depending on your state’s license design, either on the front or the back there should be some symbol or phrase denoting you as an organ donor. About 45 percent of all Americans fall into this special group, according to the Atlantic. There might need to be an addendum to those requirements, as new research has opened up the possibility of pigs becoming organ donors in the not-so-distant future. The retrovirus issue is only one part of the challenges which face pig-to-human transplants. Although organs of pigs-one of these 8 smartest animals in the world-are appropriately sized for humans and seem to be able to function as needed, they are coated with a layer of carbohydrates which cause other organisms to reject said tissue. Steps have been made to address that problem, also through gene editing. Pig organs without carbohydrates were created in cloned pigs and then transplanted into monkeys and baboons successfully. A year later, those monkeys and baboons are still healthy. According to the New York Times, 33,600 organ transplants were conducted last year, and 21 people die each day while waiting for an organ. If research like this continues to find success, this issue will become a non-issue soon enough.

Pigs’ Ears Not Recommended for Dogs

Pigs’ ears have a high fat content and can lead to obesity. Because they are high in fat, they can irritate the pancreas, causing pancreatitis in susceptible dogs. This results in vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Pig’s ear treats can also be a source of Salmonella bacteria. The federal government recently issued a warning that pig’s ear dog treats from a number of manufacturers were contaminated with Salmonella bacteria, which can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and other serious long-term complications. Some pets that become infected may not show clinical signs. These products can also be a risk to humans, according to the Health Canada warning. Transmission of the bacteria to humans can be via direct handling of contaminated product or handling of pets who may have become infected. For this reason, owners are advised to wash their hands thoroughly with warm water and soap after handling pig’s ear treats. Consult your veterinarian about these products or avoid them altogether. It is not intended as a substitute for professional care. Always consult with your Veterinarian about health related matters.

World Mental Health Day – and guinea pigs – intothisbreakinglight

It covered everything from gaining a basic insight into various mental health diagnoses, to how to be there for someone who is suffering distress or overwhelming emotions, to how to build psychological wellbeing and recognise the impact of both day to day and unusual events. Today we marked World Mental Health Day at the community centre I go to for volunteering, creative groups and support. Visitors were encouraged to the centre, we had tea and cakes, discussion and some interesting videos made through the Time to Change campaign. I also received a gift from a friend – a lovely book on guinea pigs and a piggie snack for my hopefully-future-guinea-piggies! I don’t know the lady who gave it to me very well and I was touched that she’d be so kind to me. It’s an RSPCA guide and it has some sweet photos as well as lots of information on how to make them a good living environment. I’ve been reading up on piggies and I’m hoping to be able to get some, possibly by Christmas. Not only was it a thoughtful gift, it has encouraged me to have confidence to go through with this and that my friend thinks I’d be able to look after them.
