Egypt orders slaughter of all pigs over swine flu

Egypt began slaughtering the roughly 300,000 pigs in the country Wednesday as a precaution against swine flu even though no cases have been reported here, infuriating farmers who resisted the move and demanded compensation. Egypt responded similarly in recent years to an outbreak of bird flu, which is endemic to the country and has killed two dozen people. At one large pig farming center just north of Cairo, farmers refused to cooperate with Health Ministry workers who came to slaughter the animals and the workers left without carrying out the government order. Most in the Muslim world consider pigs unclean animals and do not eat pork because of religious restrictions. In other parts of the Muslim world, pigs are often raised by religious minorities who can eat pork.

In Jordan, the government decided Wednesday to shut down the country’s five pig farms, involving 800 animals, for violating public health safety regulations. Half the pigs will be killed and the rest will be relocated to areas away from the population, officials said. In Egypt, pigs are raised and consumed mainly by the Christian minority, which some estimates put at 10 percent of the population. Health Ministry spokesman Abdel-Rahman Shaheen estimated there are between 300,000-350,000 pigs in Egypt. Hard hit by bird flu Egypt was among the countries hardest hit by bird flu.

In the northern suburbs of Cairo Wednesday, health authorities killed 250 pigs and buried them. Angry farmers demanded compensation and provincial governors paid them around 1,000 Egyptian pounds per head. The farmers asked for an official government decision to set a price for each pig slaughtered.

China to kill 1,332 pigs over swine fever outbreak

Authorities in China’s Zhejiang province said it will cull 1,332 hogs after an African swine fever outbreak was reported in the city of Yueqing, the city government said in a post on its official Weibo account on Thursday. Authorities have sealed off an area within 3 km from the pig farming community where the deadly disease was found, according to the statement. The local government has also banned the movement of animals that can be easily infected inside and outside the affected area, and closed some live hog trading markets and slaughterhouses following the outbreak, the statement said. China is home to the world’s largest pig herd and the case in Yueqing, a city under the jurisdiction of the nearby city of Wenzhou, was the first confirmed outbreak in the eastern province of Zhejiang and the country’s fourth in a month. The latest cull will bring the total number of pigs deliberately killed to prevent African swine fever to over 25,000 in an effort to control the spread of the highly contagious disease, which was first reported in the city of Shenyang in the northeastern province of Liaoning just three weeks ago.

Two other cases have been reported in Henan in central China and Jiangsu province to the north of Zhejiang. The virus which causes African swine fever is hardy and has been shown to remain infectious for at least 30 days in uninhabited pig pens, over four months in pork products, including salted dried hams, and indefinitely in frozen pig carcasses, it said.

DC Used to Feed Its Trash to Pigs. Why’d We Stop?

The Residence Act of 1790 moved the seat of US government from Philadelphia to what would become DC. With that small detail taken care of, the city we know today would grow around the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. The real challenge for a new city in the 19th century was how to deal with all the garbage. They often decided to go out of sight and out of mind, taking trash to pig farms outside city limits. By 1943, the public opinion of the practice had soured.

A report from the National Institutes of Health described how feeding uncooked garbage to swine was a major cause of human trichinosis, which at the time was more common in the US than anywhere else in the world-mostly thanks to parasite-ridden pigs. The NIH notes that if table scraps were thoroughly cooked and the resulting pork was prepared correctly, the disease transmission would drop dramatically, and it would again be a profitable, useful way to get rid of garbage. It turns out the NIH was right: if properly boiled for 30 minutes before feeding, the USDA allows pigs to eat garbage, and the guidelines were last updated in 2009. It’s hard to make a food pyramid out of table scraps. We throw away more and more inedible, inorganic wastes, so it’s hard to feed pigs a balanced diet on trash alone.

Plus, studies and anecdotal evidence have found that it creates lower-quality meat that spoils sooner. If you take care of the hygiene issues, feeding pigs trash is still a viable option-they don’t mind.

bio health pigs

In recent years, pig farming has been characterised by minimum margins and great societal pressure. The technical results of a farm must be excellent in order to continue to be profitable despite the low returns. This can be achieved, for example, when animal health is optimal. So animal health forms the basis for good operating results. In pigs, animal health starts with the birth of the piglets.

Top priority must be given not only to the litter size but also to the health and vitality of the sow and piglets. In porkers, nutrition and digestion plays an important role in animal health. Fertility is a logical consequence of healthy animals. Fertility is extremely important in sow farming, and greatly influences the operating results. Keeping the sow in good condition, with appropriate feeding for each life phase, will ensure timely gestation and healthy piglet production.

Hygiene is an aspect which must never be overlooked throughout the pig farming sector. The drinking water too must be clean and free from any form of pollution if animals are to stay healthy and perform optimally.

Do guinea pigs “fluff up” to keep warm? |

Ever since it got cold, my indoor male guinea pigs have morphed into furbies. They used to be quite sleek, slim-line little things but now they just sit there looking like a ball of fluff seeming all depressed! they are in the cold porch. Probably although the only time I noticed one of mine fluffed out like that was because it was ill. They do feel the cold, so you might want to warm them up.

One to drop into the conversation next time you’re having tea with the vicar. Mine lives in the kitchen but I still give him a huge pile of hay – an edible duvet – which he huddles under and, during the cold weather, I replenish each night. I have also put an old bath towel under the cage as the floor can be quite cold. Registering is free, easy, and means you can join in the discussion, watch threads, get discounts, win prizes and lots more.

Guinea Pig Bladder Stones

Guinea pigs are prone to several health problems and getting bladder stones are one of them. Guinea pig bladder stones are a painful problem that can be life-threatening. Once you know your pig has bladder stones they should not be ignored. Bladder stones in guinea pigs can be big or small and can stay in the bladder or get stuck in the urethra. Sometimes stones are so small that they can be passed when your guinea pig urinates but more often than not they either get stuck in the urethra or cause irritation to the bladder tissue.

Diet and water intake may play a role in bladder stone formation, but just like in people, we don’t know 100% of the time what causes guinea pig bladder stones to form. You can start by making sure your guinea pig diet is the best it can be, offer clean water and make sure your cavy is drinking it, and get your guinea pig spayed or neutered. An exotics vet will be able to positively diagnose your guinea pig with bladder stones after doing a physical examination and possibly a urinalysis and/or radiographs. If your cavy has one or several bladder stones in his bladder that is too large for him to urinate out surgery is your one option to save him. If there is a stone stuck in the trigone or the urethra your vet may try to remove it under sedation or try to push it back up into the bladder by using a catheter so that your guinea pig can at least urinate for the time being or before going to surgery.

Regardless of your specific bladder stone situation, guinea pigs that have stones should be kept comfortable and as stress-free as possible. If your guinea pig lives with another pig bring that pig along to the vet, offer UVB lighting during the day, and ask your vet for guinea pig specific pain medications and/or anti-inflammatories.

037 Gene Editing Virus Resistant Pigs

The African Swine Fever Virus is a devastating pathogen that leads to fatal disease in domesticated swine. Scientists at the Roslin Institute led by Prof. Bruce Whitelaw have made an important advance for domestic pig health and welfare. Wild African pigs like warthogs do not get the disease. Researchers at Roslin have studied the genes associated with viral infection, and found what is likely a critical difference between the wild and domestic pigs.

Using new gene editing technology, the change in wild pigs has been created in domestic pigs, and they will be tested for resistance to the virus this year. This example is one of may that is coming in animal, plant, and fungal genetic improvement through gene editing.

Patients ‘should not be guinea pigs’

Patients must not be used as guinea pigs, says an inquiry into a controversial trial of ventilators on babies, some of whom died. Professor Rod Griffiths, who headed the investigation, said a further review was needed of the way research is performed throughout the NHS. I believe this report will create a foundation for successful research in the NHS, while increasing the confidence of patients that research is done properly and that people are not being used as guinea pigs. His report into the alleged incidents at North Staffordshire Hospital called for new measures to ensure vital parental consent is obtained. The report was published after a 15-month inquiry into the controversial treatment involving a new type of ventilator at the hospital. Professor Griffiths revealed that allegations of forged consent forms have been passed to the General Medical Council. Professor Griffiths said that the Department of Health, professional medical bodies and regulators should co-operate to draw up clear guidance for the issue of consent during clinical trials. The report also heard evidence on the use of covert surveillance cameras to detect parents who physically abuse their children in hospital in an attempt to draw attention to themselves. “I believe this report will create a foundation for successful research in the NHS, while increasing the confidence of patients that research is done properly and that people are not being used as guinea pigs.” The report panel said: “What was totally unacceptable to those interviewed was the apparent lack of adequate explanation, of choice and of consequent properly elicited and recorded consent.” The ventilators are no longer used for premature babies, but are still used for infants. Following publication of the report, David Fillingham of the trust said: “There are a number of lessons that need to be learned.” “Mrs Henshall welcomed the report. She said:”There were no easy answers to the concerns we were raising and the whole ethos around research in general. “The report goes a long way and it’s extremely thorough to reassure the public that there’s greater protection.” The Continuous Negative Extrathoracic Pressure ventilator used in the trial works in the opposite way to a traditional ventilator, using the same principles as an iron lung. Health Minster Lord Hunt said he accepted all the report’s recommendations.

British Association of Rodentologists

We provide training courses to members of the public, to those working with rodents and to veterinary professionals with the aim of improving rodent and guinea pig medical care and welfare. The Rodent Health Advisory course is the most important part of a rodentologist’s training. Qualified Rodentologists fill the gap in veterinary training, which is based mainly on cats, dogs and farm animals and does not include a specific study or examination on naturally occurring disease within the rodent/guinea pig species. Part of the RHA course is a two day residential training at the Cambridge Cavy Trust/CCT in Huntingdon, just north of Cambridge, UK. This residential stay may be completed in either two consecutive days or on two separate occasions. There are a limited number of training places available so early booking is advised. Some calcium is good for your guinea pig, but calcium-rich foods, such as alfalfa, must be fed sparingly to avoid getting a surplus of calcium in your guinea pig’s system. A guinea pig’s teeth grow continuously, so it is important that your pig has enough hay and other roughage in his diet to wear the teeth down.
