Angus Meets Autumn For The 1st Time: Guinea Pig Intro

Short Term Health Plans Republicans were able to fight off Democratic efforts to roll back a Trump regulation that would expand the number of health insurance plans that don’t have to meet Obamacare’s benefit rules, Alex Ruoff reports. Trump’s Health Team President Trump took a lap in the winner’s circle this week when he signed two bills into law that end pharmacy gag clauses. Pharmacists couldn’t tell a customer if their drugs would be cheaper if they paid without insurance unless the customer explicitly asked. Trump said he expects an immediate impact and that drug costs at the pharmacy counter will go down. Experimental Bundles Over 1,500 hospitals and physician practices are going to be guinea pigs for a new Medicare payment model, James Swann writes.

The Little Guy CVS Health Corp.’s $68 billion merger with Aetna Inc. spells trouble for any other pharmacy benefit service looking to set up shop, Eleanor Tyler reports. Small insurers will also be strained because of the deal because CVS will likely pass on its savings to the insurer and charge full freight for its pharmacy benefit manager work to other carriers. Six Former Pharmacy Employees You might remember when 753 people got sick and 64 died from a contaminated drug that was created in a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy in 2012. Six people involved in that bad batch of medicine will head to court soon, and prosecutors are trying to prove they knowingly marketed non-sterile drugs, Adrianne Appel reports.

Compounded drugs are personalized formulas mixed in-house and sold in very small batches. They’re in a regulatory gray area, which creates concern among some FDA officials that they’re more likely to be tainted than other drugs. The pharmacy, New England Compounding Center, folded long ago, and some people involved in the outbreak have already gone to jail.

Guinea pig models for translation of the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis into the clinic.

Guinea pig models for translation of the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis into the clinic. Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA. Over 30 years ago Professor David Barker first proposed the theory that events in early life could explain an individual’s risk of non-communicable disease in later life: the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis. During the 1990s the validity of the DOHaD hypothesis was extensively tested in a number of human populations and the mechanisms underpinning it characterised in a range of experimental animal models. Over the past decade, researchers have sought to use this mechanistic understanding of DOHaD to develop therapeutic interventions during pregnancy and early life to improve adult health.

A variety of animal models have been used to develop and evaluate interventions, each with strengths and limitations. It is becoming apparent that effective translational research requires that the animal paradigm selected mirrors the tempo of human fetal growth and development as closely as possible so that the effect of a perinatal insult and/or therapeutic intervention can be fully assessed. The guinea pig is one such animal model that over the past two decades has demonstrated itself to be a very useful platform for these important reproductive studies. This review highlights similarities in the in utero development between humans and guinea pigs, the strengths and limitations of the guinea pig as an experimental model of DOHaD and the guinea pig’s potential to enhance clinical therapeutic innovation to improve human health.

Guinea Pigs Love a Routine

Guinea pigs soon get used to a routine, and will reward you with welcoming squeaks as soon as they hear you open your back door. It is important to check on your guinea pigs at least twice a day, in the morning and evening. Guinea pigs love human company and the more time you can spend with them the happier they are. FeedingGuinea pigs are never happier then when they are eating, and feed time will be rewarded with the loudest squeaks of all. In the morning they should be given a bowl of dry mix, and a variety of fresh food.

During the day if they are in their Eglu they will graze grass, and then in the evening they can be given some fresh hay for overnight. Fresh waterWater is extremely important, and the bottle should be refilled daily. If the weather is cold, be aware that their water could freeze, and may need to be thawed and refilled more frequently. Keep their home clean and tidyHousekeeping is very important, and their bedding should be changed regularly. Unlike rabbits, guinea pigs cannot be trained to use a litter tray, they will toilet anywhere, but the eglu is quick and easy to clean.

The ideal home for your guinea pig

Guinea pigs are very active animals and you’ll need to provide them with lots of toys and objects to keep them active. They’ll need a lot of space to be happy and healthy. A large hutch and a big, grassy exercise area provide them with the ideal living area. They can live indoors or outdoors, so long as they have enough space and are kept comfortable in summer heat or bad winter weather. You can even keep your guinea pigs in a heated outhouse in a cavvycage.

If your guinea pigs live outdoors, don’t let them exercise in bad weather. Consider keeping them in a warm shed or outbuilding where they can exercise indoors during winter. The RSPCA recommends an absolute minimum size of 4ft by 2ft but the bigger the better. Make sure it’s weatherproof and raised off the ground. Guinea pigs don’t sleep much but take naps throughout the day and night.

They’ll need to be able to choose when to go to bed and when to be active. Plenty of toys and activities to keep them entertained.

RSPCA Victoria

Long-haired guinea pigs can be especially hard to look after. BehaviourIn the wild, guinea pigs live in large social groups. Two adult guinea pigs that don’t know each other may fight. We do not recommend that guinea pigs and rabbits be housed together. BreedingThe RSPCA strongly advises that you do not breed from your guinea pigs as it is very difficult to find good homes for the young.

HealthGuinea pigs should be checked regularly for overgrown claws and teeth. Long haired guinea pigs in particular may suffer from the potentially fatal disease flystrike, cause by flies laying eggs in soiled fur. To avoid this, make sure the guinea pig’s home is cleaned every day and their bedding changed regularly. Groom guinea pigs every day, checking their fur all over for any dirt, especially under the tail. If a guinea pig develops bald patches this could be the fungal disease ringworm.

FoodGuinea pigs can suffer from vitamin C deficiency, which causes weight loss, general weakness and swollen joints. Like people, guinea pigs cannot make Vitamin C and need to eat fresh greens every day.

No Excuse For Small Guinea Pig Cages

FDA Petitioned to Lower Ractopamine Limits for Meat, Review Health Impacts

Animal rights and food safety groups are petitioning the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to immediately lower the allowed residue limits for ractopamine – a controversial drug used to boost growth and leanness in meat production – and to study the drug’s effects on human health and animal welfare. The petition comes just days after the drug escalated trade tensions between the United States and Russia, which recently adopted a zero tolerance policy for ractopamine in imported meat, jeopardizing around $500 million in U.S. exports to the country. The petition contends that the FDA needs to do a more thorough job of assessing the potential harmful effects of ractopamine, a beta-agonist that mimics stress hormones and increases the rate at which animals convert feed into muscle.

The drug is fed to animals in the last few weeks, right up until slaughter. There is no mandatory withdrawal period for ractopamine, but when FDA approved the drug, it set safe maximum residue limits for ractopamine in meat products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service does very limited testing for the drug, but the agency has never found levels that violate the established MRLs, according to the data posted online. A recent test conducted by Consumer Reports of 240 pork samples found that about one in five were positive for very low levels of the drug – under 5 parts per billion, which is well under the FDA’s established MRL of 50 ppb for pork.

Though ractopamine is approved as safe in more than two dozen countries, including Canada and Brazil, there is still sharp disagreement over the safety of the drug. The European Food Safety Authority has determined the science backing ractopamine is insufficient to determine what amount, if any, of the drug is safe for human consumption. China, Russia, and others have expressed similar worries and ban the drug from being used by their own meat producers. While it was approved as safe by the FDA more than a decade ago, the petition claims the agency did not thoroughly review all of the potentially negative consequences of the drug. Animal welfare advocates are particularly concerned about the number of pigs that have reportedly had adverse reactions to the drug.

OUTBREAK: Chinese Pigs Infected With Swine Flu

Last week, China reported its first ever outbreak of African swine fever at a farm in Shenyang. Chinese pig-related stocks then slumped after the world’s biggest pork producer and consumer reported its first ever case of highly contagious hemorrhagic fever. In Hong Kong, WH Group Ltd., the world’s largest pork company, retreated 2.1 percent. Muyuan Foodstuff Co. dropped 8.7 percent, Guangdong Wens Foodstuffs Group Co.

fell 6.3 percent and Tangrenshen Group Co. declined 4 percent in the aftermath of the announcement of the outbreak, according to Bloomberg. The outbreak of the African swine fever is spurring a cull, a ban on transportation, and a quarantine for the neighboring areas. The hemorrhagic disease is highly contagious and mortality rates can be as high as 100 percent, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health. China had more than 433 million pigs at the start of the year, more than half of the world’s total food/pork pigs.

The first case of African Swine Fever virus in China was reported on Friday, August 3, according to the Swine Health Information Center. The outbreak was located in the northeast part of the country, in the city Shenyang, district of Shenbei New, in the province Liaoning, SHIC said in a news release. This is a swine dense area of 130 miles along the North Korean border. According to Pork Business, The Global Agricultural Information Network reports that pork producers and animal quarantine officials in Bulgaria are currently monitoring for African swine fever, as recent outbreaks of the virus have occurred just over the border with Romania, and elsewhere in the region. Pork remains the most widely produced and consumed meat in Bulgaria.

Guinea Pig Sounds And The Meanings Behind Them

Guinea pigs express their feelings and thoughts not only with their behavior and body language but also by making different sounds. The most common situations are when your are stroking your pet or it is groomed by another guinea pig. If your guinea pig is cooing, then it is a sign of being content. Naturally, cooing is a sound that mother guinea pig does to her babies. Rumble is a high-pitched vibration sound that male guinea pig produces in attempts to woo a female.

Rumbling is usually accompanied with the male guinea pig wiggling his hips around the female. If you hear that a guinea pig is making a high-pinched noise, then it is feeling frightened or is in pain. Usually you can hear a squeak when a young guinea pig is taken away from a mother. Guinea pigs can start to chatter to communicate to other guinea pigs or people to stay away. Guinea pig who is chirping is associated with being stressed.

The noise resembles a bird chirp and is most commonly heard when a baby guinea pig communicates to the mother that it is hungry or wants to suckle from her. If you hear your guinea pig growling, the best way to cam it down is to pet it and to speak in a soft manner.

China culls thousands of pigs as African swine fever spreads – Archy news nety

More than 14,500 pigs have been culled in an eastern Chinese city, officials said Wednesday, as the world’s largest pork producer scrambles to contain an outbreak of African swine fever. Beijing reported its first case of the disease in early August, and since then the virus has spread to pigs in several cities across China, requiring authorities to destroy large numbers of hogs. African swine fever is not harmful to humans but causes haemorrhagic fever in domesticated pigs and wild boar that almost always ends in death within a few days. There is no antidote or vaccine, and the only known method to prevent the disease from spreading is a mass cull of the infected livestock. The government of the port city of Lianyungang, about 500km north of Shanghai, said it had culled the swine by Monday night in a quarantined area.

Authorities said they had inspected four million other pigs in the city and found no other abnormalities. In a report to the World Organisation for Animal Health, Beijing said an emergency plan had been launched and control measures taken to halt the spread of the disease. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation warned in May of the risk of the spread of African swine fever from Russia. Around half of the world’s pigs are raised in China, and the Chinese are the biggest consumers of pork per capita, according to the FAO. African swine fever is not harmful to humans but causes haemorrhagic fever in domesticated pigs and wild boar.

Bioengineered Lungs Successfully Transplanted Into Pigs

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 1, 2018 – Lab-grown lungs have been successfully transplanted into pigs with no apparent medical complication for months after the procedure, researchers report. This line of research on bioengineered lungs could eventually lead to more options for people who need a lung transplant, according to the team at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The lungs, which were tissue-matched to each individual pig, were grown in the laboratory. Each pig received one bioengineered lung and retained an original lung. As early as two weeks after being transplanted, the bioengineered lungs created a network of blood vessels they needed to survive, according to the study published Aug. 1 in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The researchers assessed the development of lung tissue and integration of the bioengineered lungs at 10 hours, two weeks, one month and two months after the transplants. The study was meant to assess how well the bioengineered lungs adapted and continued to mature within a large, living body. It didn’t evaluate the levels of oxygen the lungs provided to the pigs. Research in animals often doesn’t pan out in humans, so further research is required. The researchers said it may be possible to grow lungs to transplant into people within five to 10 years.

Scientists Breed Pigs Resistant To Incurable Disease

COLUMBIA, Mo., Dec. 8 – Researchers at the University of Missouri have developed a pig breed resistant to an incurable disease currently costing farmers $660 million annually. Swine infected by the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus lose weight, rarely reproduce and suffer high mortality rates. With help from scientists at Kansas State University, recently raised a litter of pigs resistant to the virus. Their success is detailed in a new paper, published this week in the journal Nature Biotechnology. Early in their research, Prather and his colleagues identified the protein CD163 as key in facilitating the proliferation of the PRRS virus.

Gene editing experiments proved their hypothesis correct. Researchers confirmed that the newly resistant pig breed did not suffer any negative side effects from the absence of the CD163 protein gene. Now, researchers are working in coordination with Genus plc, a British biotech company specializing in pig and cattle breeds. They hope to take the breed to market in the near future.

Liaoning culls over 8,000 pigs after African swine fever outbreak

Northeast China’s Liaoning Province has culled 8,116 pigs in response to an outbreak of African swine fever, the provincial animal health and production bureau said Wednesday. Earlier this month, an outbreak of African swine fever was discovered on a farm in the provincial capital Shenyang. It was China’s first outbreak of African swine fever. The outbreak is currently under control, with no new cases discovered. No cases of the African swine fever were reported in other cities in the province.

Investigation showed that the farm purchased 45 pigs from a farmer surnamed Wang in early July. Pig feces samples from Wang’s farm tested positive for the virus. Liaoning has adopted measures such as suspending the transport of pigs from Shenyang to other parts of China, culling pigs in infected areas, and suspending feeding pigs with kitchen refuse and scraps of waste food. African swine fever is a highly contagious, viral disease that infects pigs.

His Wife Thought He Was Going To Kill The Pigs, –

An old farmer and his wife had a bunch of pigs, and every morning the farmer would head out to feed them. Every morning, he would see all the pigs screwing up a storm. He would get turned on by this and try to get back to the house in time to screw his wife – but he always got soft before he got there. He took his hatchet and headed out to the pig pen. If you liked this, please share by using the share button below.

Health of non-ambulatory, non-injured pigs at processing

Loss of pigs during or after transport is a welfare concern, but also an economic concern for producers. Transport losses include animals that are dead on arrival at the plant, pigs that are injured, and pigs which are not obviously injured but unwilling or unable to walk. The objective of this research was to assess the health of non-ambulatory, non-injured pigs relative to control pigs at the processing plant by looking at a range of measures, including complete blood chemistry, anatomy, and pathology to determine potential factors associated with pigs going down. Data were collected from NANI and control pigs at five plants in the midwest USA. Feet and legs and internal organs were inspected and the severity of the pathology scored.

Titers to common porcine respiratory viruses were measured in pigs from one plant. Hoof and pad problems did not differ overall between control and NANI pigs, however the percentage of severe foot problems was greater in NANI compared with control pigs at plants A and E. The percentage of total ulcers, rhinitis, and empty stomachs differed between control and NANI pigs at individual plants, but not overall. Cortisol concentrations did not differ between NANI and control pigs. Titers to swine influenza virus H1N1 and H3N2 and porcine circovirus were lower among NANI compared with control pigs.

More NANI pigs were positive for SIV H1N1 and H3N2 compared with control pigs. Blood hematology, chemistry, and pathology indicate a large difference between NANI and controls pigs. No single health problem was higher among NANI pigs compared to plant-matched control pigs. Rather, several problems appear to contribute to pigs becoming NANI which may differ from one plant too another.

Macsumsuk Pigs Research Page

The result of the Macsumsuk mineral experiment: The weight at the starting age was similar between the two groups, but after 30-days, experimental group showed better weights than the control group. At 90 days from the start of the experiment, the weight of the experimental group was about 6 KG heavier than that of the control group. The total weight gain per head of the experimental group was 29.5 KG, which was greater than that of the control group. The daily weight gain per head of the experimental group was 1.03 kg while that of the control group was 0.93 kg. The daily intake per head of the experimental group was 3.38 kg, which was lower than that of the control group.

The experimental group showed a lower feed conversion rate compared to the control group. The experimental group showed lower total cholesterol levels in the blood than the control group. The experimental group also showed greater glucose and IgG contents than the control group. The experimental group showed a greater carcass weight than the control group. The experimental group showed greater heating loss and water-holding capacity than the control group.

In particular, the cholesterol content of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group, suggesting that the addition of Macsumsuk has positive effects on the muscle and fat characteristics of pork. The control group showed greater saturated fatty acid contents than the experimental group, whereas the experimental group showed greater unsaturated fatty acid contents than the control group.

Totally Vets

If you’ve been in to the Feilding clinic recently you may have noticed our resident guinea pigs on show. The thing I found most fascinating about guinea pig babies is that they come out looking exactly like a smaller version of their parents – they have a complete coat and their eyes are open. They only need to receive the sow’s milk for approximately 5 days and they can start eating solids within a few hours. Guinea pigs should be fed a variety of foods to not only provide their nutritional requirements but to avoid them getting fussy later on as they have little tolerance to food changes. We feed broccoli, carrots, apple, fresh grass, hay, pellets and plenty of fresh water.

There are many different hutch designs for a guinea pig. Guinea pigs can be housed outdoors in New Zealand during the warmer months as long as the hutch has an area that has plenty of warm bedding and is insulated. They need to have somewhere to hide and make sure there is a toilet area separate from the sleeping and bedding areas. Guinea pigs are originally from South America and are not actually related to pigs. Most rodents are nocturnal, but the guinea pig is not.

Like pigs – the male is called a boar, the female is called a sow but the babies are called pups. Pop in and see our guinea pigs next time you are passing – they’d love to meet you.

Pigs in a Bacon Blanket Recipe

I love taking my boys to the Minnesota State Fair, and I often get inspiration for recipes as we walk around and see the crazy new foods. My bacon-wrapped cheese curds recipe in The Ketogenic Cookbook was inspired by my first trip to the state fair with my boys years ago. How to Make It Preheat a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Take a slice of bacon and secure it to one end of a hot dog with a toothpick, then spiral-wrap the bacon around the hot dog so that it covers the entire dog. Secure the other end of the bacon with another toothpick.

Place the wrapped dogs in the hot skillet and fry on all sides until the bacon is crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove from the skillet, remove the toothpicks, and serve with ketchup. Above mentioned %DVs are based on 2,000 calorie food intake. DVs may be vary depending upon individuals daily calorie needs. Above nutritional values are estimates and should only be used as a guide for approximation.

They are not allfoodchef.com recommendations. Calculations are based on average weight of 194 lbs.

In pigs infected with HRV at PTD10, there was a uniform decrease in the function and/or frequencies of natural killer cells, plasmacytoid dendritic cells, and CD103+ and apoptotic mononuclear cells and altered gene expression profiles of intestinal epithelial cells. In pilot experiments, to evaluate the effects of protein malnutrition on immune function and enteric infection, we infected pigs with HRV at 3 and 10 days after HIFM transplantation to evaluate protein malnutrition/HRV infection effects in the context of developing and established intestinal microbiomes, respectively. The neonatal pigs infected with HRV at 3 days after HIFM transplantation had poor health, high mortality rates, and enhanced HRV shedding/diarrhea, unlike pigs infected at 10 days after HIFM transplantation or germfree pigs. The GF pigs on the protein-deficient diet became stunted compared to their sufficient-diet counterparts; however, stunting and edema were less evident in GF pigs than in HIFM-transplanted protein-deficient pigs. Protein deficiency differentially affects SOX9, CgA, MUC2, villin, and PCNA gene mRNA levels of IECs.SOX9, MUC2, villin, PCNA, and CgA gene mRNA levels were lower in jejunal IECs of protein-deficient pigs than in those of sufficient HIFM/HRV-infected pigs, as demonstrated by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR.

However, only MUC2 and villin mRNA levels were lower in protein-deficient pigs than in protein-sufficient non-HRV-inoculated pigs, while CgA, PCNA, and SOX9 mRNA levels were higher. Protein deficiency decreased the frequencies of natural killer cells among intestinal and splenic mononuclear cells and significantly decreased the NK function of splenic MNCs. Similarly, frequencies of intestinal plasmacytoid dendritic cells and CD103+ MNCs were significantly lower in protein-deficient pigs than in protein-sufficient pigs. Stunting of the pigs on the deficient diet that were transplanted with sHIFM or dHIFM was indistinguishable from that of pigs transplanted with dHIFM. Likewise sHIFM failed to rescue pigs on a deficient diet from stunting.

Because protein-deficient HIFM-transplanted pigs with or without HRV were more stunted than protein-deficient GF pigs infected with HRV, we conclude that the altered microbiota and not HRV infection alone plays a major role in the development of stunting in protein deficiency. Finally, our observations suggest that the intestinal microbiota enhances epithelial proliferation and IEC barrier function, which is evident from the higher PCNA and villin mRNA levels in HIFM-transplanted pigs than in GF pigs. In the early 1990s there were just 198 Mangalica pigs left and a Hungarian animal geneticist became alarmed. There are even a few specialized farmers raising Mangalica pigs in the United States today. Eating MangalicaThe Mangalica is one of the fattiest pigs in the world; on average 65-70% of the carcass is fat, and lean meat is only 30 – 35% of the carcass, compared to over 50% in modern breeds.

From Pigs to Peacocks, What’s Up With Those ‘Emotional-Support Animals’?

Concern is mounting over people’s asserted need for emotional support animals, as more seek accommodations for their pets and livestock in places not designed for bird or beast, said Phyllis Erdman, chair of the American Psychological Association’s section on human-animal interaction. Still, there’s anecdotal evidence, experts say, that some of the animals provide comfort to some people. More and more people are taking emotional support animals into places not meant for pets. It’s incredibly easy to have any critter classified as an emotional support animal, said Erdman, who led a symposium on the topic last week at the American Psychological Association’s annual meeting, in San Francisco. Mood disorders like depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are usually the reasons cited for assigning someone an emotional support animal, Erdman said.

The animals don’t have to be certified or trained, and there are no federal restrictions on the species, size or weight of an animal in an emotional support role, she added. Emotional support animals are allowed under federal housing law as a reasonable accommodation for a disabled person, she noted. These are working animals certified to pull wheelchairs, lead the blind, detect low blood sugar in diabetics, or remind people with bipolar disorder to take their medication. Some websites now act as letter mills for people who want their pet named as an emotional support animal, according to Erdman. Ochoa added, anecdotal reports have shown that the animals can provide benefit to some people.

To maintain the legitimacy of emotional support animals, Ochoa urges patients to know their animals well and consider how they will respond to other people in spaces that are usually off-limits to animals. The American Kennel Club has more about emotional support animals.
