Guinea Pigs Love a Routine

Guinea pigs soon get used to a routine, and will reward you with welcoming squeaks as soon as they hear you open your back door. It is important to check on your guinea pigs at least twice a day, in the morning and evening. Guinea pigs love human company and the more time you can spend with them the happier they are. FeedingGuinea pigs are never happier then when they are eating, and feed time will be rewarded with the loudest squeaks of all. In the morning they should be given a bowl of dry mix, and a variety of fresh food.

During the day if they are in their Eglu they will graze grass, and then in the evening they can be given some fresh hay for overnight. Fresh waterWater is extremely important, and the bottle should be refilled daily. If the weather is cold, be aware that their water could freeze, and may need to be thawed and refilled more frequently. Keep their home clean and tidyHousekeeping is very important, and their bedding should be changed regularly. Unlike rabbits, guinea pigs cannot be trained to use a litter tray, they will toilet anywhere, but the eglu is quick and easy to clean.

RSPCA Victoria

Long-haired guinea pigs can be especially hard to look after. BehaviourIn the wild, guinea pigs live in large social groups. Two adult guinea pigs that don’t know each other may fight. We do not recommend that guinea pigs and rabbits be housed together. BreedingThe RSPCA strongly advises that you do not breed from your guinea pigs as it is very difficult to find good homes for the young.

HealthGuinea pigs should be checked regularly for overgrown claws and teeth. Long haired guinea pigs in particular may suffer from the potentially fatal disease flystrike, cause by flies laying eggs in soiled fur. To avoid this, make sure the guinea pig’s home is cleaned every day and their bedding changed regularly. Groom guinea pigs every day, checking their fur all over for any dirt, especially under the tail. If a guinea pig develops bald patches this could be the fungal disease ringworm.

FoodGuinea pigs can suffer from vitamin C deficiency, which causes weight loss, general weakness and swollen joints. Like people, guinea pigs cannot make Vitamin C and need to eat fresh greens every day.

How to Care for Guinea Pigs

The average life expectancy for a guinea pig is around four to eight years. To help your guinea pig live a long and healthy life make sure he gets plenty of good-quality hay for all that excellent calcium and to keep those teeth trimmed down. Good question! To turn it on its head, female guinea pigs very easily get pregnant and can do so from as young as four to six weeks of age, and remain reproductively active their whole life. Guinea pigs are strict herbivores and should never be given meat.

Do not give a guinea pig human foods such as chocolate and biscuits. Always act quiet around the guinea pig, avoid sudden movements, and always speak in a reassuring voice. Avoid carrying your guinea pig in your arms as they dislike being off the ground. You will need a safe, spacious area for the guinea pig to live. Guinea pigs develop a dewlap as they age: soft, loose skin under the chin.

Guinea pigs are happiest when they have at least one other guinea pig to socialize with. Exercise wheels and balls shouldn’t be bought, as they aren’t designed for guinea pigs and can hurt their backs. Don’t use any wooden toys that splinter, remove all labels and tags from the new toy, and ensure it is safe to chew on, as guinea pigs tend to chew on just about anything!

Guinea Pig Health Ileus In Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs should be eating and defecating regularly. If you noticed that your cavy hasn’t touched his food and there is less fecal material being passed, he may have ileus. The condition is caused by the accumulation of gas in the stomach and intestines due to lack of normal movement of the gastrointestinal tract. With no food coming in and gas building up, the condition can become very life-threatening and your pet needs immediate veterinary attention. Ileus can occur secondary to an underlying health issue or as a result of stress which can cause your pet to stop eating.

Being infested by lice, an upper respiratory tract infection, moving your pet’s cage, or the arrival of a new guinea pig can stress your cavies so much so that they stop eating and suffer from ileus. Any change in your pet’s eating habits should be brought to the attention of your Savannah, GA veterinarian.

Natural Pig Farming

Disease is the most obvious sign of poor animal welfare. Controlling disease is high on the agenda in factory farms. This is because the system pigs are raised in creates huge health risks to the pigs being raised. Ammonia pollution and stress reduces the pigs immune system disease resistance capacity. Less efficient excrement cleaning systems leave floor a breeding ground for bacteria.

Lack of pen space leads to pigs lying in their own filth and excrementMakes picking up illness more likely. Causes a higher level of urinary infections than deep bed or free range. Hard and slatted floors make physical injuries and illness more likely – lameness is more frequent due to the hard unyielding surfaces pig are raised on factory farms. Pigs suffer higher levels of psychological problems due to deprivations inherent in factory farm system. As a result factory farms need to have strict bio security measures, must vaccinate their pigs against many known virus’s, and must routinely use antibiotics to try to keep the pigs healthy enough to survive in the high bacteria, high virus environment they are kept in.

Natural pig farming in comparison has none of these problems. With fresh air, healthy deep floor bedding and sensible stocking density we raise stress-free, disease-free pigs.

Scientists Breed Pigs Resistant To Incurable Disease

COLUMBIA, Mo., Dec. 8 – Researchers at the University of Missouri have developed a pig breed resistant to an incurable disease currently costing farmers $660 million annually. Swine infected by the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus lose weight, rarely reproduce and suffer high mortality rates. With help from scientists at Kansas State University, recently raised a litter of pigs resistant to the virus. Their success is detailed in a new paper, published this week in the journal Nature Biotechnology. Early in their research, Prather and his colleagues identified the protein CD163 as key in facilitating the proliferation of the PRRS virus.

Gene editing experiments proved their hypothesis correct. Researchers confirmed that the newly resistant pig breed did not suffer any negative side effects from the absence of the CD163 protein gene. Now, researchers are working in coordination with Genus plc, a British biotech company specializing in pig and cattle breeds. They hope to take the breed to market in the near future.

Liaoning culls over 8,000 pigs after African swine fever outbreak

Northeast China’s Liaoning Province has culled 8,116 pigs in response to an outbreak of African swine fever, the provincial animal health and production bureau said Wednesday. Earlier this month, an outbreak of African swine fever was discovered on a farm in the provincial capital Shenyang. It was China’s first outbreak of African swine fever. The outbreak is currently under control, with no new cases discovered. No cases of the African swine fever were reported in other cities in the province.

Investigation showed that the farm purchased 45 pigs from a farmer surnamed Wang in early July. Pig feces samples from Wang’s farm tested positive for the virus. Liaoning has adopted measures such as suspending the transport of pigs from Shenyang to other parts of China, culling pigs in infected areas, and suspending feeding pigs with kitchen refuse and scraps of waste food. African swine fever is a highly contagious, viral disease that infects pigs.

Guinea Pigs as Pets

Many a guinea pig care provider knows the sound of a guinea pig squealing with delight whenever the refrigerator door opens! Try putting the hay or fresh food in places such as hidden in little crumpled bits of paper, empty toilet paper or sections of paper towel rolls or non-toxic baskets just for fun! Try putting pellets in a small hollow plastic ball with small holes drilled in the side that are slightly larger than a pellet; as the pig rolls it around with his nose, he will get to eat in the process! The hay can be provided in a hay feeder or put in the corner of the cage. Severe footpad infections are common among guinea pigs housed on poor substrate, especially cages with wire flooring.

Pet guinea pigs are not likely to have this parasite unless they had previous exposure to lice-infested guinea pigs. Many guinea pigs with slobbers are emaciated, have aspiration pneumonia and gut stasis, so are in a very weakened state by the time they see the veterinarian. Most Guinea pigs will approach a hand introduced into their cage and can be easily scooped into the palm of the hand. Usually, cupping one hand under the rump while the other hand cradles the midsection is a good way to pick up guinea pigs safely. Guinea pigs are quite nose-heavy, and often land on their incisors when dropped.

Guinea pigs not accustomed to being handled may jump and run, but are rarely aggressive. Housing accommodations provided for pet guinea pigs are limited only by one’s imagination, ingenuity, and budget. Guinea pigs can be housed within enclosures made of a variety of materials. Pigs kept together since youth are likely to live harmoniously guinea pig relationships can deteriorate and sometimes previously harmonious animals may need to be separated. The single most important consideration regarding guinea pig breeding is that the female guinea pig should be bred between four and seven months of age if she destined for breeding.

Pet care for Rabbits & Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs need roughage in the form of hay as the main part of their diet. It is important to provide 2 biscuits of high-quality hay per day that is mould and parasite free. Hay that has been let outside to become wet and exposed to vermin like wild cats, rodents or birds can result in ill health in your guinea pig. Good hay has a fresh pasture smell and is green tinged in colour. It is tricky to find good hay in urban areas, so you may need to make friends with some farmers.

Guinea pigs less than 6 months old also need access to Lucerne hay, which is the dark green coloured hay. A healthy adult guinea pig also needs 25mg of Vitamin C daily, via high-vitamin C fruit and vegetables or a vitamin C supplment,. Do not use vitamin C supplements in your guinea pig’s water. A pregnant guinea pig will need about 30 to 40mg/day. Aim for 70% hay, 30% green leafy veggies and some occasional treats, such as apple, banana, cranberry, tomato and watermelon.

Avoid too much lettuce varieties, cabbage and fruits as they can make your guinea pig very sick. Choose an age appropriate pellet variety for your guinea pig and only feed about a tablespoon per day.

Guinea Pig Nutrition |

Your guinea pig should have unlimited access to a variety of quality grass hays. Among many benefits, hay helps prevent obesity, dental disease, diarrhea, and boredom. Since replacing the hay in your guinea pig’s habitat can encourage picky eating, we recommend changing it only when soiled. Young, pregnant, nursing or ill animals can benefit from eating alfalfa hay in addition to grass hay because of the higher nutritional elements. Otherwise, alfalfa should only be given occasionally as a treat.

Grass hay should make up the majority of your pet’s daily diet. Offer a variety of hay to your guinea pig to promote optimum health. Since hay is a natural product, each bag will look and feel different. Use our Taste & Texture Guide located on every hay package to determine your pet’s taste and texture preferences.

Guinea pigs are tail-less rodents with long, short, or sometimes wild hair that ranges in color. When full grown, they weigh around 1-2 pounds and are 8-10 inches long. Described as cuddly and comical, guinea pigs love to vocalize with squeals, chirps, squeaks, and whistles. They make wonderful pets for children and can be very social animals. Guinea pigs are hardy little animals, and their easy care makes them especially affordable pets!

OMG – Veterinarian Sent This Baby Guinea Pig Home Without Treatment!!!

Keeping Pot Bellied Pigs as Pets

If your pot-bellied pig is litter trained you will need to clean his litter pan as needed. You pig’s hooves will need to be trimmed every 1-2 years depending on the amount of exercise it gets. A regularly walked pig will have hooves that require less attention than a sedentary pig. A sedentary pig is a FAT pig and this is unhealthy for your pig. Your pig may also have tusks that will generally need to be maintained every year or two.

While at the vet you will also need to update your pig on his vaccinations. Some say that if you step on pig bristles you will definitely know it! Since their hair is sparse, light colored pigs can be prone to sunburn and need protection such as children’s sun block. Inbreeding is a serious problem with pot-bellied pigs. While many breeders are pushing the issue of having breeding quality pot-bellied pigs for sale, it is ultimately the responsibility of the owner to spay or neuter their pet.

Indoor pets can be fed a special diet of pig chow which is a specially formulated feed that provides vital nutrients and supplements that your pet will need to stay healthy. Pot-bellied pigs are herd animals and respond well to outdoor living conditions where they are given ample space to root and dig. Pot-bellied pigs can be trained to walk on a leash and will greatly benefit from the exercise they will get on regular walks.

Baby Guinea Pigs Care

Baby guinea pigs are tiny, and hence they need a lot of precaution and care to make sure that they are safe in their cage. The first thing when you get a baby guinea pig home is to find a warm and quiet place to set up its cage until they are big enough to be left alone. Guinea pigs are basically very nervous mammals and will get anxious and feel unsettled. Once you have the baby guinea pigs in the cage leave them alone and make sure that there is no disturbance in the area. You should start being friendly with the baby guinea pigs by making them get used to your touch.

In this manner, the baby guinea pigs will get used to your presence and scent and start associating with you. Guinea pigs love some of the toys and this can add an attraction to their cage. Guinea pigs are herbivorous and they should be fed with the guinea pig mix. Baby guinea pigs should be given soft foods that are easy to swallow. You are supposed to include vitamin C regularly in the diet of the pets because they lack the enzyme that produces vitamin C.

It is important to note that you should not feed the guinea pig with rabbit food. To make sure that your baby guinea pig does not contract any disease keep the cage and the environment clean. If there are any indications of infection that is spreading then take your pet to a vet who will take further care.

List of Guinea Pig Illnesses

That means by the time your guinea pig, or cavy, shows any signs of disease, he might already be very sick. Since cavies are sensitive to many antibiotics, good supportive care might be the only way to pull your pet through sickness. Respiratory disease, specifically pneumonia, kills more guinea pigs than any ailment. Bacterial types of pneumonia are the most common, but a guinea pig might come down with the disease caused by an adenovirus. Treatment can prevent an early respiratory illness from turning into full-blown pneumonia and possibly save your guinea pig’s life.

Guinea pigs can’t throw up, so diarrhea is the primary symptom of any gastrointestinal disorder. Make sure your guinea pig always has grass or timothy hay available, along with fresh, clean water. Your guinea pig’s teeth grow continuously throughout his life. Affected guinea pigs drool and can’t chew their food correctly. Lack of vitamin C, which guinea pigs can’t manufacture in their bodies, can also lead to dental disease.

Older guinea pigs often develop tumors, which might or might not be malignant. If your older cavy starts looking scruffy, or experiences paralysis, he could be suffering from lymphosarcoma, the most common type of tumor in cavies.

What is the normal heart rate for a guinea pig

Guinea pigs are shy in one way, but not shy in another. Guinea pigs love to be in the room of the house that is most social. When they’re tired they don’t like to be bothered. They do like to fall asleep on you! They love to held at times.

They don’t like to be around a lot of noise.

Itchy guinea pig likely has 1 of 3 ailments « Animal Health Foundation Blog

Guinea pigs suffering from itchy skin may have species-specific lice, a mite infection called sarcoptic mange or the fungal infection known as ringworm, writes veterinarian Jeff Kahler, who notes that ringworm can be transmitted to people from their guinea pig. A veterinarian can distinguish between the three using microscopic evaluations of skin and hair from the guinea pig as well as a fungal culture. When Allison told her mom that her guinea pig seemed to be scratching herself a lot, Allison was told to clean out Poppy’s cage. The list of possible causes for pruritus, or itchiness, in guinea pigs is long, however three causes make up the lion’s share of these cases. In my clinical experience, I see this as the most common cause of pruritus in my guinea pig patients.

Most often, the type of lice involved with one type of animal is specific to that type of animal. In guinea pigs, these unattractive little creatures gain access from one guinea pig to another most commonly through direct contact, though lice can be transmitted through substrate such as bedding materials and also through food, especially bulk food. Treatment for lice in guinea pigs involves using an oral or injectable medication two to four times, with two weeks between each treatment depending on the severity. I also recommend treating the environment every four days by removing and replacing the substrate and spraying with a spray containing the same ingredient as the medication used to treat the guinea pig. These are specifically sarcoptic mange mites that burrow into the guinea pig’s skin and cause irritation and pruritus.

Treatment for mange in guinea pigs is virtually identical to the treatment for lice. An important point to note here is that guinea pigs can transfer ringworm fungus to people.

Pellet Ingredients Comparison

Synthetic Vitamins: SYNTHETIC VITAMIN D AND VITAMIN A is commonly added to pellets despite research showing its harmful effects. VITAMIN D: Rabbits are 40x more sensitive to the active form of vitamin D than other mammals. For rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas vitamin D3 in excess will cause developmental deformities with higher levels being lethal. Active vitamin D3 stimulates them to actively absorb more calcium from their diet and it prevents the kidneys from expelling it in the urine. It is best to allow rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas access to natural day light because the UV rays stimulate the formation of the natural vitamin D3 precursor in the skin.

A properly formulated diet will have ample amounts of natural vitamin D2 that they can convert on an as needed basis to the active form. Synthetic Vitamin A is considered NUTRITIONAL NONSENSE: Most brands add synthetic vitamin A and many add borderline toxic amounts. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas can store large quantities of vitamin A in the liver. These other forms of vitamin E may not be as bio-available and their presence dilutes the effective dosage the food may claim to have. IN THIS CASE MORE IS BETER: Vitamin E dosage recommendations have increased many fold over the years.

Current research now touts many of the added benefits attributed to increasing the dietary dosage of vitamin E. THE SOURCE MATTERS! Many brands that add refined oils to increase the energy content will unknowingly create a vitamin E deficiency. This is because the ratio of vitamin E to the amount of fat in the diet is important.

An Ode to Oh She Glows – GUINEA PIGGING GREEN

Oh She Glows is one of those blogs I will never tire of. I’ve been making Angela’s recipes since before I was vegan. Heck, I’ve been making Angela’s recipes since before I was vegetarian! When I recommend a recipe, more often than not it’s from her blog. I love that each recipe is very accessible to people with even the most rudimentary cooking skills!

Angela’s blog is one of the reasons I’ve never used cookbooks – it is just way too easy to find simple, healthy, delicious, vegan recipes online But then she went and wrote a cookbook. Suddenly, I’m making homemade granola bars, trying not to get the pages sticky as I follow the instructions. My boyfriend, who has never been that interested in cooking, has mastered recipes such as her Creamy Avocado Pasta. This cookbook has been such a pleasure to have in our apartment and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has loved her blog like I have. Speaking of which, this gorgeous book would be a fantastic Christmas present!

Lakes country hog wild about potbelly pigs

There is no question she is passionate about her potbelly pigs. In addition to Pepper, Robyn is fostering two other pigs: Nugget and Baby. They all live with her inside the home here in Ottertail. According to the city, Robyn is in violation of rules in town. They say she has too many pigs, on too small a piece of land, and now she says she is being fined.

Robyn says she has a letter from her doctor, It says these potbelly pigs are good for Robyn’s mental health. They are sticking by its 2006 ordinance which restricts things like potbelly pigs here in town, based on the amount of land the pigs are on. Robyn promises to fight city hall, with an upcoming meeting next week, where she will ask for an exemption. All because she can’t imagine parting with any of them. Robyn hopes to present a new letter from her doctor when she argues for an exemption next Thursday night at the Ottertail Council Meeting.

China culls pigs after 1st African swine fever outbreak -…

BEIJING, Aug 3 – Chinese authorities said on Friday they have culled almost 1,000 pigs near Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province in northeast China, after discovering an outbreak of deadly African swine fever. This is the country’s first known outbreak of the devastating livestock disease and will stoke concerns about its spread in the world’s largest pig herd. Some 913 hogs were slaughtered and the outbreak has been effectively contained, the Liaoning provincial animal health bureau said. ASF occurs among pigs and wild boars, and its effects are often deadly.

My guinea pig won’t drink any water……?

Also she might drink if you put water in a bowl that can’t be tipped over. NEVER put anything in their water It makes them drink less and degrades fast so it’s a waste. Only feed melons, strawberries, and fruit 1-2 times a week as it can cause mouth sores if fed too often. Not a thimble full, you’re thinking of hamsters.

Housing and Feeding Your Guinea Pig

Dr. Kenneth Welle, an exotic pet veterinarian at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, has advice on housing and feeding your guinea pig. A guinea pig cage should have a solid floor covered in bedding rather than a wire-bottom cage, which can cause problems if the guinea pig catches its toes on the wire. If you use a cage with a wire floor, be sure to provide another surface where the guinea pig can relieve its feet. Cleanliness is very important for good guinea pig health.

Legume hays may be appropriate for growing guinea pigs or pregnant ones, but not for adult guinea pigs. Dr. Welle recommended limiting pellets by weight: 1 tablespoon pellets per pound of guinea pig. Young, growing guinea pigs can have unlimited access to pelleted guinea pig food. Dr.

Welle says that salt licks are not necessary for guinea pigs unless they are somehow eating mineral-deficient hay. If you do want to get your guinea pig a salt lick, the colored salt-and-mineral ones are better than the plain white ones, which have no added minerals. Salt licks can also help with getting your guinea pig to drink more water, if that is a concern. Guinea pig digestive systems are designed for grass diets, which are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates. If your guinea pig has been on such a diet, switch to a plain pellet and hay diet gradually.

Guinea Lynx :: What’s Normal?

If you suspect your guinea pig has mites, be sure to treat them as soon as possible! Aromatic greenish droppings may be caecal pellets, which the guinea pig re-ingests. Very young guinea pigs often have an orange or brown tint to their urine. BOAR GLUE. Yes, male guinea pig ejaculate is normal!

Ejaculate is generally white in color and appears rubbery. Be sure to check out your guinea pig if he is in discomfort or has difficulty urinating. To help monitor health, weigh your guinea pig weekly! Use the weight/health record pages provided in GL’s handy Cavy Health Record Book, a loose-leaf notebook, or a calendar, but be sure to record your guinea pig’s weight on a regular basis. If your guinea pig has lost four or more ounces, see a vet immediately.

WATER CONSUMPTION. Water consumption is different for each guinea pig. Make sure your guinea pig is not just playing with the water bottle if you suspect your pet is drinking too much. If your guinea pig is not eating favorite foods or is hiding it its house, something is wrong. See a vet promptly if you suspect your guinea pig is sick.

So if you decide to adopt, make sure you are there for the long haul! While rare, some guinea pigs have even lived over 10 years.
