Angus Meets Autumn For The 1st Time: Guinea Pig Intro

Short Term Health Plans Republicans were able to fight off Democratic efforts to roll back a Trump regulation that would expand the number of health insurance plans that don’t have to meet Obamacare’s benefit rules, Alex Ruoff reports. Trump’s Health Team President Trump took a lap in the winner’s circle this week when he signed two bills into law that end pharmacy gag clauses. Pharmacists couldn’t tell a customer if their drugs would be cheaper if they paid without insurance unless the customer explicitly asked. Trump said he expects an immediate impact and that drug costs at the pharmacy counter will go down. Experimental Bundles Over 1,500 hospitals and physician practices are going to be guinea pigs for a new Medicare payment model, James Swann writes.

The Little Guy CVS Health Corp.’s $68 billion merger with Aetna Inc. spells trouble for any other pharmacy benefit service looking to set up shop, Eleanor Tyler reports. Small insurers will also be strained because of the deal because CVS will likely pass on its savings to the insurer and charge full freight for its pharmacy benefit manager work to other carriers. Six Former Pharmacy Employees You might remember when 753 people got sick and 64 died from a contaminated drug that was created in a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy in 2012. Six people involved in that bad batch of medicine will head to court soon, and prosecutors are trying to prove they knowingly marketed non-sterile drugs, Adrianne Appel reports.

Compounded drugs are personalized formulas mixed in-house and sold in very small batches. They’re in a regulatory gray area, which creates concern among some FDA officials that they’re more likely to be tainted than other drugs. The pharmacy, New England Compounding Center, folded long ago, and some people involved in the outbreak have already gone to jail.

Guinea pig models for translation of the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis into the clinic.

Guinea pig models for translation of the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis into the clinic. Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA. Over 30 years ago Professor David Barker first proposed the theory that events in early life could explain an individual’s risk of non-communicable disease in later life: the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis. During the 1990s the validity of the DOHaD hypothesis was extensively tested in a number of human populations and the mechanisms underpinning it characterised in a range of experimental animal models. Over the past decade, researchers have sought to use this mechanistic understanding of DOHaD to develop therapeutic interventions during pregnancy and early life to improve adult health.

A variety of animal models have been used to develop and evaluate interventions, each with strengths and limitations. It is becoming apparent that effective translational research requires that the animal paradigm selected mirrors the tempo of human fetal growth and development as closely as possible so that the effect of a perinatal insult and/or therapeutic intervention can be fully assessed. The guinea pig is one such animal model that over the past two decades has demonstrated itself to be a very useful platform for these important reproductive studies. This review highlights similarities in the in utero development between humans and guinea pigs, the strengths and limitations of the guinea pig as an experimental model of DOHaD and the guinea pig’s potential to enhance clinical therapeutic innovation to improve human health.

Guinea Pigs Love a Routine

Guinea pigs soon get used to a routine, and will reward you with welcoming squeaks as soon as they hear you open your back door. It is important to check on your guinea pigs at least twice a day, in the morning and evening. Guinea pigs love human company and the more time you can spend with them the happier they are. FeedingGuinea pigs are never happier then when they are eating, and feed time will be rewarded with the loudest squeaks of all. In the morning they should be given a bowl of dry mix, and a variety of fresh food.

During the day if they are in their Eglu they will graze grass, and then in the evening they can be given some fresh hay for overnight. Fresh waterWater is extremely important, and the bottle should be refilled daily. If the weather is cold, be aware that their water could freeze, and may need to be thawed and refilled more frequently. Keep their home clean and tidyHousekeeping is very important, and their bedding should be changed regularly. Unlike rabbits, guinea pigs cannot be trained to use a litter tray, they will toilet anywhere, but the eglu is quick and easy to clean.

The ideal home for your guinea pig

Guinea pigs are very active animals and you’ll need to provide them with lots of toys and objects to keep them active. They’ll need a lot of space to be happy and healthy. A large hutch and a big, grassy exercise area provide them with the ideal living area. They can live indoors or outdoors, so long as they have enough space and are kept comfortable in summer heat or bad winter weather. You can even keep your guinea pigs in a heated outhouse in a cavvycage.

If your guinea pigs live outdoors, don’t let them exercise in bad weather. Consider keeping them in a warm shed or outbuilding where they can exercise indoors during winter. The RSPCA recommends an absolute minimum size of 4ft by 2ft but the bigger the better. Make sure it’s weatherproof and raised off the ground. Guinea pigs don’t sleep much but take naps throughout the day and night.

They’ll need to be able to choose when to go to bed and when to be active. Plenty of toys and activities to keep them entertained.

Avian Flu Diary: California: San Luis Obispo Public Health Investigating Suspected Swine Variant Flu Cases

Like we saw in Michigan last week, and in Indiana in early July, pigs carrying swine flu are suspected of infecting fairgoers at the California Mid-State fair. The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department is investigating several cases of influenza in the community to determine whether they are linked to a case of influenza in a pig at the California Mid-State Fair. At this time, the Public Health Department does not have any laboratory confirmation that the cases are linked to pigs. A number of cases of pigs transmitting influenza to humans at agricultural fairs have occurred in other states in recent years. If you seek medical attention for the flu and have had extended contact with pigs, tell your health care provider about that contact.

Swine flu outbreaks linked to county fairs and agricultural exhibits present a particularly sticky problem for both fair organizers, and public health officials. As we saw a year ago in EID Journal: Transmission Of Swine H3N2 To Humans At Agricultural Exhibits – Michigan & Ohio 2016, these venues are particularly good at disseminating novel flu viruses to the public. Variant influenza infections in humans continue to occur through contact with exhibition swine; often, the cases are in swine exhibitors with close and prolonged swine exposure. Of note, while widespread illness in pigs was only rarely reported, surveillance revealed an average prevalence of influenza A in fair pigs of 77.5%. This study cautions that this suggests `that subclinical influenza A infections in pigs remain a threat to public health.

This from the CDC. CDC Recommendations For People At High Risk:If you are at high risk of serious flu complications and are going to a fair where pigs will be present, avoid pigs and swine barns at the fair. Take protective measures if you must come in contact with pigs that are known or suspected to be sick. To further reduce the risk of infection, minimize contact with pigs in the pig barn and arenas.

China to launch emergency inspections on farms after swine …

BEIJING, Aug 6 – China’s Liaoning province will increase inspections at pig farms and markets and strengthen the monitoring of hog transportation, after the nation’s first African swine fever case was reported there, local media Liaoning Daily reported on Monday. The African swine fever outbreak poses a major threat to the hog farming industry in the province and the whole country, and must be eradicated thoroughly, an official from Liaoning Provincial Bureau of Animal Health and Production said, according to Liaoning Daily. The provincial government has asked local authorities to launch emergency inspections at all pig farms, hog markets, slaughterhouses and harmless treatment sites in the province, and report any cases of pig deaths due to unknown reasons, slaughtered pigs found with splenomegaly or splenic hemorrhage, and immune failure among pigs after receiving swine fever vaccines, the paper reported, citing the animal health bureau. Liaoning also ordered the temporary closure of all live hog markets and slaughterhouses in Shenbei district, where the outbreak was discovered, the paper reported. China culled some 913 hogs near Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning, and banned transportation of hogs from the affected areas, following the outbreak.

Hogs and products in Shenyang can only be distributed within the city, while those transported from outside must go through strict quarantine, the animal health bureau official said. The case in Liaoning, the first in East Asia, has stoked concern about its spread in China, which has the world’s largest pig herd, and possibly to neighbouring countries in Asia. Japan has suspended imports of heat-treated Chinese pork and tightened quarantine operations at airport and seaports, following the outbreak. Local authorities in Liaoning must put affected pigs under strict quarantine and monitoring once suspected cases were discovered. The movement of susceptible animals, and their products must also be restricted, the report said.

High fat diets and pathology in the guinea pig. Atherosclerosis or liver damage?

Animal models have been widely used to investigate the relationship between diet and atherosclerosis and also to study disease etiology and possible interventions. Few published studies actually reported observations of characteristic atherosclerotic lesions and even fewer of advanced lesions. Studies, by our group, of guinea pigs fed on a high-fat diet revealed similar observations, with indications primarily of fatty streaks but little evidence of atherosclerotic plaques. This review discusses the feasibility of the guinea pig as a model for dietary-induced atherosclerosis. As it stands, current evidence raises doubt as to whether guinea pigs could serve as a realistic model for atherosclerosis.

Our own data and the literature suggest that they could be useful models for studying lipoprotein metabolism, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and dietary interventions which may help regulate these conditions. Substance High fat diets and pathology in the guinea pig.

Romania reports 500 outbreaks of African swine fever in pigs

BUCHAREST, Romania – Romanian authorities have reported more than 500 separate outbreaks of African swine fever in pigs, mainly in the Danube Delta and near the Hungarian border. In the eastern county of Tulcea, the region worst hit by the disease, an official told The Associated Press on Monday that a state of emergency had been proclaimed. Mihai Pagal, a spokesman for the Tulcea prefect’s office, said 48,000 pigs had been culled since June after they came down with the disease. He said two large commercial farms had been badly hit, as well as many smaller farms. Tulcea alone has seen 471 outbreaks of swine fever, according to Romanian veterinary authorities.

They said nationwide, 500 farmers will receive compensation for dead livestock. The World Organization for Animal Health says African swine fever doesn’t affect humans.

Right Pet for You?

Man rates the pig as the fifth most intelligent animal with man ranking first, followed by monkeys, dolphins, whales and pigs. Many pig owners actually allow their pig to share the bed and maintain that a porcine sleeping partner is not only warm and cuddly, but doesn’t wiggle, squirm, or hog the bed. Granted, pigs are not as agile as the traditional dog or cat pet. If a pet pig is allowed to exercise regularly, is not overfed, and is examined and vaccinated annually by a veterinarian, she should live to a ripe old age. You need to totally acquaint yourself with the nature of the pig and your responsibilities as a pet pig owner.

You can buy an unregistered, mismanaged, unsocialized, crossbred, unhealthy pig from a bad breeder for very little money; or adopt a happy, healthy, socialized, registered pig from a reputable breeder. I don’t recommend getting a pig from a pet store either, unless they can supply appropriate food and support information as well as the pig’s litter registration paper indicating the breeder. Because for many years I was the Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the North American Potbellied Pig Assn., I can share practices that responsible breeders follow. You can ask a friend or acquaintance who owns a potbellied pig, is happy with her pet, and has a good relationship with her breeder for a referral. What you should see at a good breeding facility, is happy, healthy, tractable breeding stock, a few weaned pigs in the house for pre-adoption training, a clean and healthy environment both inside and outside, and pigs who respond to the breeder eagerly and with obvious affection.

If you take the precaution of putting your pig in the kennel, you won’t need to worry about potty accidents or a flying pig who could cause a car crash. A kennel-savvy pig makes a lot of sense for future fun outings or trips to the vet, so you might as well get started on the right foot with crate-training.

Husbandry, Diseases, Feeding & Care of Guinea Pigs and Chinchillas

Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, are from South America, and have some special dietary needs. Chinchillas are quiet, shy animals that originated in South America, which explains some of their environmental needs. It is important to have the proper housing ready before getting your guinea pig or chinchilla, and to know as much as possible about their behavior, diet, and common diseases.

Guinea Pig Advice

Whether your guinea pig is kept inside or out, choose a large, secure hutch with room to move around. Guinea pigs don’t climb, so the hutch doesn’t need extra levels, but they do like to run and be active. If the hutch is outside, keep it in a sheltered spot free from draughts, but with plenty of ventilation.

Guinea Pig Health

Many diseases can be avoided by keepinga small number of pigs. In order to have healthy pigs, it is importantto know about the common diseases of pigs, so that you can prevent and treat them. Malnutrition is one of the most important problems of small pig herds. The pigs will appear thin and show poor growth The only bones that you should see are the shoulder blades, which should be covered by a layer of flesh so that you cannot actually feel them If the backbone, hip bones or ribs can be seen, the pig is too thin. Mange is one of the most important problems in small pig herds. It is caused by small parasites called mites that live in the skin The pig becomes itchy, and scratches and rubs against the walls of the sty and other objects The coat looks dull, and there are bare patches, heavy crusts, and lines on the body that look like ribs Treatment is with spray-on or pour-on preparations or injections that also treats worms If you have only a few pigs, you and your neighbours should buy the medicine together and treat the pigs at the same time Treat adult pigs regularly; you then do not have to treat piglets, as they will not be infected. Diamond skin disease was named this way because affected pigs develop large dark-red patches on the skin This disease can cause death It is treated with antibiotic injections You can vaccinate pigs to prevent the disease. Pork measles is caused by tapeworms which live in the muscles of pigs They do not usually affect the pig, but can lead to pain and the pig may find it difficult to move around When people eat undercooked measly pork, the worms develop inside the people, and can make them very sick These worms can be controlled by preventing the pigs from wandering about where they can feed on human faeces, and by making sure that people working with pigs use toilets Pigs cannot be treated for this disease. Pigs are heavy compared to the size of their feet and can easily hurt their feet if there are cracks in the floor or sharp surfaces Pigs can also develop arthritis fairly easily from damage or diseases They will not place weight on the sore leg Pigs that sit or lie and do not get up when food is given, are lame Examine the pig for sores and swellings If there are no obvious sores or swellings, get help from a veterinarian, because it may be best to slaughter the pig. Many serious diseases start with fever Pigs stop eating, lie around, may huddle together, and may become red or purple on the belly, legs and ears. In South Africa, pigs may get African swine fever in parts of the Northern, North West, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga provinces where warthogs are infected. If pigs can drink as much water as they like, this is not a serious problem If the pigs cannot drink water, they can die of salt poisoning Pigs appear to be blind, fall over, and may vomit and have seizures resembling epileptic fits. You should get help from a veterinarian or animal health technician, because not all antibiotics are good for treating pneumonia If a pig dies from pneumonia and you open up the chest of the carcass, the lungs look solid and red, and there may be pus. Hygiene is important in preventing pig diseases Keep pigs in pens that are well drained and clean these every day Make sure that clean fresh drinking water is always available Clean feeding troughs and containers before putting in fresh feed Control flies by removing dung and covering it to make compost Store feed in a clean, dry, rat-proof place. If you know about the different diseases which pigs can get, you can either prevent or treat them in time and avoid pigs dying from disease.

Swine as Models in Biomedical Research and Toxicology TestingVeterinary Pathology

37,49,51 However, descriptions of macroscopic or microscopic background lesions in research pigs in the laboratory setting or toxicologic pathology descriptions in minipigs have been reported only rarely. The rationale for the use of pigs, and particularly minipigs, as an increasingly common alternative choice of nonrodent species in regulatory toxicology studies is discussed. Histologically, the pig has more prominent Purkinje cells and a more prominent vasa vasorum in the aortic wall than seen in the dog, monkey, or rat.9,51 Small foci of lymphocytes are occasionally noted within the myocardium of minipigs involved in toxicology studies, similar to those previously described in monkeys13,55 but much less commonly than is noted in rats with spontaneous cardiomyopathy. Fatty liver is a common finding in the streptozotocin diabetic pig model, as it is in other porcine models of hypertriglyceridemia. The location of the parathyroid glands is variable depending on the age of the pig, but they can generally be found in the first fascial plane medial to the thymus at its cranial end.51 It is often difficult to locate both parathyroid glands macroscopically, and therefore this tissue may be missing, at least unilaterally, in some toxicology studies, especially if the laboratory has limited experience with porcine tissue lists. 48 As mentioned earlier in this section, the pig’s cardiovascular system has general physiologic, anatomic, and histologic characteristics that make the pig a good model for biomedical research and toxicology testing. 21 These advances have largely resulted from using pig models, and consensus groups have recommended the pig as the preferred model for studying intravascular stents. The pig model is used in wound healing, plastic surgery techniques, reconstructive techniques, burn models, and artificial skin grafts. The pig has been more commonly used than either primates or dogs for various wound healing and reconstructive surgery given the more similar anatomy of the skin.47,51 They uses include skin surgery, melanoma research, wound healing, burn studies, microbiology, laser therapy, aseptic necrosis, vitiligo and depigmentation, dry skin, and studies of hypertrophic scarring. 26 Histopathologically, the tumors in pigs and humans are similar, and although these pigs develop a range of pigmented tumors from benign junctional nevi to metastatic malignant melanoma, there are numerous differences between the tumors in pigs and the tumors in humans. Pigs were chosen for preclinical studies because the subcutaneous tissue from the dorsal back area of the pig is very similar to human breast tissue. In the literature, the use of pigs in neurosciences is the most rapidly increasing area of research for this species. From the foregoing, it is clear that the pig and minipig represent good models for humans in many ways. 7 In the field of food safety, pigs are used throughout the discovery and regulatory process given the similar omnivorous eating patterns of pigs and humans and the previously mentioned similarities in the digestive tract.
