Spain has more pigs than people

The succulent meat features on many a dinner table and tapas spread, and the cured hams are renowned worldwide. Even as far back as Roman times, Spain’s hams were spoken of highly, and when the Romans lost control of the region, the Goths who followed gave pigs special protection. Now the relationship between Spaniards and their pigs is more tense than usual. The number of pigs in Spain has surpassed that of human citizens – 50 million animals compared to 46.5 million people. The sheer volume of waste is why animal agriculture is the fourth leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions in Spain, following transportation, electricity generation, and industry. 

As ham production becomes more industrialized throughout Spain, standards have fallen, raising questions about food safety. The authenticity of production methods has been challenged as well, particularly that of the famous jamón ibérico de bellota, which retails for hundreds of Euros per kilogram and is made by letting blackfoot pigs roam in a oak forest for their final few months of life, foraging for acorns. Formal oversight is lacking, which has allowed producers to cut corners, supplementing the acorn diet with animal feed and shortening the mandatory three-year curing period. These unfortunate problems are indicative of a broader global crisis when it comes to meat production. The fact is that inhabitants of wealthier developed nations eat far too much meat and are not willing to pay enough money for it, both of which are contributing factors to the over-industrialization of animal agriculture. 

Significantly reducing meat consumption levels should be a priority for policy-makers worldwide, as it would resolve a host of issues over time, from cleaner water, lower emissions, and freeing up land, to health concerns about processed meats and the ethical implications of raising animals in unnaturally tight conditions. Spain’s pig problem is one that every other nation will soon face if we keep eating meat the way we do.

Pigs, Hogs, and Drug Testing

At the beginning, a group of healthcare providers start utilizing a new or newly discovered CPT or HCPCS code for a test, procedure, or product. The enthusiasm of early adopters over a clinically beneficial test gives way to more and more providers pursuing the opportunity, some inevitably driven more by profit opportunity than clinical value. As the volume of claims grow, the insurance companies begin to audit for overutilization, lack of medical necessity, and excessive testing. In addition to the heightened scrutiny of claims, providers also find the reimbursement drops as the volume of the testing exapnds. A subset of providers or marketers try grow their claim volume even more aggressively, trying to cash in on a profit opportunity that they perceive to be time-limited. 

As a healthcare lawyer dealing with reimbursement disputes over the past two decades, I could rattle off dozens examples of this phenomenon:diagnostic tests from nerve conduction studies and electromyography to genetic testing. Over the last eight years or so, drug testing through urine toxicology screening has been the most pervasive example of this phenomenon. Beginning around 2007, interest began to grow around the use of urine toxicology screening for injured workers being treated for pain by workers compensation providers. Addiction treatment providers have embraced urine tox screening. In the Sky Labs case, Cigna has alleged that its payments in excess of $32m for UDT were fraudulent because the labs routinely waived co-pay waivers and also because the labs induced kickbacks, by allocating investment opportunities to drug rehabs based on the volume of urine tox samples referred. 

Providers would do well to take a cue from the Sky Labs allegations. Labs, addiction treatment providers, and physicians that manage all three are likely to do just fine.

Are Guinea Pigs Starter Pets, Disposable, Boring & Dumb?

Deadly African swine fever arrives in China, the world’s largest producer of pigs

Africa swine fever, which recently appeared in Shenyang City, in Liaoning Province, northeastern China, threatens the USD150-billion global pig industry. African swine fever, an infectious and highly lethal viral disease of pigs, has for the first time reared its head in China. Just two weeks ago, African swine fever was confirmed as the cause of death of pigs on a small farm in Shenyang City, in Liaoning Province, located in the northeast, bordering North Korea and the Yellow Sea. China is the largest pig producer in the world, raising more than 500 million animals-about half of the global pig population. African swine fever is a highly contagious and deadly disease of domestic pigs. 

Following detection of African swine fever in the Caucasus region in 2007, the China Animal Disease Control Center and the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs began to prepare the country for actions to take in the event the disease entered China. In the present case, some sick pigs died on the afternoon of 1 Aug 2018, with a preliminary diagnosis of African swine fever made by the Liaoning Animal Disease Control Center. Although African swine fever has been long-established in wild African pigs, the first scientific reports of an outbreak in domestic pigs came from Kenya in 1909 following the introduction of exotic pigs to the country. The epidemiology of African swine fever outside Africa is further complicated by spread of the virus by wild boars and there is good evidence that different breeds of pigs and wild boars have different levels of sensitivity to the virus. With China home not only to half the world’s total pig population but also to unique pig breeds and to a large population of wild boars, it is vital that the current outbreak of the disease is successfully controlled. 

China agricultural universities on the genomic characterization of domestic pigs and wild boars in Asia and the genetic resistance of domestic pigs and wild boars to African swine fever. Related ILRI collaborative research activities on African swine fever conducted with partners in Europe and the USA focus on the socioeconomic impacts and epidemiology of the disease, surveillance of the disease, the response mechanisms pigs make to the disease, bio-security protocols in place in different pig value chains, and the comparative evolutionary biology of the African swine fever virus.

From Pigs to Peacocks, What’s Up With Those ‘Emotional-Support Animals’?

Concern is mounting over people’s asserted need for emotional support animals, as more seek accommodations for their pets and livestock in places not designed for bird or beast, said Phyllis Erdman, chair of the American Psychological Association’s section on human-animal interaction. Still, there’s anecdotal evidence, experts say, that some of the animals provide comfort to some people. More and more people are taking emotional support animals into places not meant for pets. It’s incredibly easy to have any critter classified as an emotional support animal, said Erdman, who led a symposium on the topic last week at the American Psychological Association’s annual meeting, in San Francisco. Mood disorders like depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are usually the reasons cited for assigning someone an emotional support animal, Erdman said. 

The animals don’t have to be certified or trained, and there are no federal restrictions on the species, size or weight of an animal in an emotional support role, she added. Emotional support animals are allowed under federal housing law as a reasonable accommodation for a disabled person, she noted. These are working animals certified to pull wheelchairs, lead the blind, detect low blood sugar in diabetics, or remind people with bipolar disorder to take their medication. Some websites now act as letter mills for people who want their pet named as an emotional support animal, according to Erdman. Ochoa added, anecdotal reports have shown that the animals can provide benefit to some people. 

To maintain the legitimacy of emotional support animals, Ochoa urges patients to know their animals well and consider how they will respond to other people in spaces that are usually off-limits to animals. The American Kennel Club has more about emotional support animals.

African swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease of pigs which is currently spreading in eastern and central Europe and has recently been found in China. The virus does not affect people but severe strains of the virus are often fatal to pigs of any age. If the disease were to reach the UK it would have a devastating effect on our export market and would also mean the humane culling of pigs on infected premises to prevent further spread. What you should do. If you keep pigs, you must not feed catering waste of any description, or domestic food waste, to your pigs. 

If you are ever worried about the health of your pigs consult your veterinary surgeon immediately. The biggest risk of the disease entering the UK’s pig population is by pigs eating infected pork or pork products derived from infected pigs or wild boar. It also survives in pig faeces and in the blood of infected pigs or wild boar. The virus can therefore be spread on vehicles, equipment, clothing and boots contaminated by infected pigs or wild boar. If these people also happen to keep pigs, or work on pig farms, they could pass that contamination on to their pigs and introduce disease, but there are some straightforward actions they can take to prevent introduction. 

Ensure that people who look after or visit your pigs understand the disease risk of bringing back meat products and in particular wild boar meat or pork/pork products from affected countries. Don’t bring meat products onto the farm to avoid accidental access to pigs. The presence of the disease in both commercial and backyard pigs in continental Europe means that there is an increased risk of introduction of African swine fever to pigs in the UK. It has also recently been detected in China.

Manila to slaughter 6,000 pigs to stop Ebola spread

MANILA, Feb 23 – The Philippines will slaughter 6,000 pigs at a hog farm north of the capital Manila to prevent the spread of the Ebola-Reston virus, health and farm officials said on Monday. The government has lifted a quarantine on a second hog farm after tests by experts from the World Health Organisation, World Organisation for Animal Health and Food and the Agriculture Organisation showed no more signs of the disease. The country has more than 13 million heads of swine and the discovery of Ebola-Reston on two hog farms north of Manila was isolated, the government said. The government said 6,000 pigs would be killed, burned and buried as experts sought to determine the source of Ebola-Reston in pigs as well as pig-to-pig and from pig-to-human transmission. Duque said 147 human samples have been tested for Ebola, but only six have tested positive. 

It is the first time the virus has been found outside monkeys and the first time it has been found in pigs. The virus had previously jumped from monkeys to humans but this was the first case of a jump from hogs. The Ebola-Reston virus was found in the Philippines as early as the late 1980s and 25 people were found infected after contact with sick monkeys. Only one developed flu-like symptoms and later recovered.

That means by the time your guinea pig, or cavy, shows any signs of disease, he might already be very sick. Since cavies are sensitive to many antibiotics, good supportive care might be the only way to pull your pet through sickness. Respiratory disease, specifically pneumonia, kills more guinea pigs than any ailment. Bacterial types of pneumonia are the most common, but a guinea pig might come down with the disease caused by an adenovirus. Treatment can prevent an early respiratory illness from turning into full-blown pneumonia and possibly save your guinea pig’s life. 

Guinea pigs can’t throw up, so diarrhea is the primary symptom of any gastrointestinal disorder. Make sure your guinea pig always has grass or timothy hay available, along with fresh, clean water. Your guinea pig’s teeth grow continuously throughout his life. Affected guinea pigs drool and can’t chew their food correctly. Lack of vitamin C, which guinea pigs can’t manufacture in their bodies, can also lead to dental disease. 

Older guinea pigs often develop tumors, which might or might not be malignant. If your older cavy starts looking scruffy, or experiences paralysis, he could be suffering from lymphosarcoma, the most common type of tumor in cavies.

Juliana Pigs

Pictures do not do these pigs justice; you have to see them in person to see how small they really are! A lot of people claim that no pig can be healthy and that small. Kimber Ranch’s breeders are registered with the JPAR. True to Julianas, all of my pigs have spots all over their bodies. None of my pigs are inbred, and I will never, ever inbreed my pigs.

Stress and Meat Quality

Because meat from grass-fed animals is lower in fat than meat from grain-fed animals, it is also lower in calories. Vitamin E. In addition to being higher in omega-3s and CLA, meat from grassfed animals is also higher in vitamin E. The graph below shows vitamin E levels in meat from: 1) feedlot cattle, 2) feedlot cattle given high doses of synthetic vitamin E, and 3) cattle raised on fresh pasture with no added supplements. The meat from the pastured cattle is four times higher in vitamin E than the meat from the feedlot cattle and, interestingly, almost twice as high as the meat from the feedlot cattle given vitamin E supplements. 

Grass-fed meats improve fat levels Eating moderate amounts of grass-fed meat for only 4 weeks will give you healthier levels of essential fats, according to a 2011 study in the British Journal of Nutrition. Interestingly, volunteers who consumed conventional, grain-fed meat ended up with lower levels of omega-3s and higher levels of omega-6s than they had at the beginning of the study, suggesting that eating conventional meat had been detrimental to their health. What’s more, 1) the animals weighed less than animals that were allowed to stay on pasture, 2) their meat was tougher, and 3) the meat lost more moisture when cooked. As long as beef producers are not accountable for the ultimate nutritional value of the meat, they will continue to formulate feedlot diets on a least cost basis and American consumers will continue to eat meat that is artificially high in fat and low in vitamin E, beta carotene, omega-3 fatty acids, and CLA. Grassfed Jerky Beef and buffalo jerky fit well into a busy lifestyle. 

Meat from cattle raised on grass and legumes is not only five times higher in CLA than meat from feedlot cattle, it is also higher in vitamin E, beta carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids. 102(4): 549-50.). New findings on CLA clarify the benefits of meat and dairy products Conjugated linoleic acid or CLA has demonstrated a multitude of benefits in animal studies, including fat reduction, increase in lean muscle mass, reduced risk of diabetes, reversal of arteriosclerosis, and a marked reduction in tumor growth. Meat from grassfed animals has about half the fat as meat from grainfed animals and significantly fewer calories. Meat from sheep raised on pasture has twice as much lutein as meat from grain-fed sheep-yet another nutritional advantage of raising animals naturally. Meat from grassfed cattle is four times higher in vitamin E In addition to being higher in omega-3s, CLA, and beta-carotene, grassfed beef is much higher in vitamin E.

Industrial Livestock Production

Many of today’s farms are actually large industrial facilities, not 40 acres of pastures, red barns, and rows of mixed vegetable crops that most Americans imagine. While there is no strict definition, industrial agriculture and factory farming refers to a modern type of agriculture which 1 ) requires high inputs of money, fertilizers, and eliminate jobs, in the case of crop production and 2 ) for animal production is characterized by a dense population of animals raised on limited land and requiring large amounts of food, water and medical inputs. Factory farming and industrial agriculture are used interchangeably, although industrial agriculture tends to be used more to describe this intensive type of crop production and factory farms is used when referring to industrial animal production. Animal production has gotten so far from the traditional methods of farming that the government no longer refers to these operations as farms. Man-made manure lagoons Gon industrial farms hold millions of gallons of liquid waste that can leach into groundwater.

Taxpayers fund government subsidies which go primarily to large industrial farms. Because they employ powerful lobbyists that can sway the government agencies responsible for monitoring agricultural practices, industrial farms are left free to pollute, to hire undocumented workers, and to locate their industrial facilities without regard to the impact it has on surrounding communities. Two percent of livestock farms now raise 40 percent of all animals in the US. In the United States in 2007, 81.5% of pigs are raised on farms with 2,000 pigs or more.

There will be lots of good smelling smoke so don’t wear your Gucci to this place unless you like to have your clothes become one with beef short rib and other smells of delicious seared meat. Recently, the establishment seems to be overshadowed by the many newer bbq joints popping up all over the place. In comparison to the ‘better’ places Honey Pig falls a bit short. WOW ! I’m so glad Honey Pig was the place that ended such a horrible streak of not have Korean BBQ in my life! 

I didn’t know what to expect. My friend recommended this place so we came here for lunch to try it out. My friends from Augusta also said it was really good and this place gives you a lot of meat. There was more chicken, more beef & more of everything we wanted! He is a superb server with a wicked sense of humour to-boot! 

If you’re in need of KB then this is THE place to go when in Duluth. Must try! This place is one of the top Korean BBQ in duluth. I’ve been to a few different kbbq places for lunch specials, but none of them beats Honey Pig. Great service as well, Christine was amazing! 

One of the greatest Korean bbq places I’ve been to! Honey Pig is my go to place for KBBQ. It was the first one I ever went to and has been the gold standard for me ever since. The beef brisket was placed into the more expensive option, which kind of I feel like leaves you no choice but to pay the extra $5. Would have been five stars if not for that! 

I always enjoy eating here and highly recommend.

Guardian Pigs are aggressive Pigs that spawn from Pig Torches. If a Guardian Pig is dead, it will respawn at its Pig Torch after 3 days. In world 4 of Adventure Mode, you can find 4 Pig Torches surrounding the Pig King instead of Obelisks. Sometimes the Guardian pigs will be protecting a Maxwell Statue, instead. Below is the number of hits it takes with each weapon to kill Pigs and their offspring when playing with characters with a default damage modifier. 

Guardian Pigs take 2 blasts from the Ice Staff to be frozen and 3 Sleep Darts to be put to sleep. Guardian Pigs seem to have a certain degree of discipline, as they do not eat any food on the ground and stay near the Pig Torch to keep it lit. Guardian Pigs’ behavior changes according to the location of their Pig Torch. If the torch is beside a Pig King, the guardians will reluctantly allow the player to stay and trade with their king. If the torch guards a fortress or is far from the king, the Guardian Pigs will pursue the player until they’ve run a certain distance from their torch. 

Clicking on a Pig with a headgear item selected will equip it on the Pig. Usually, the only way to get hats back from Pigs without killing them is to replace it with another hat, as fighting the Pig will break it before the Pig dies. The Pigs can also wear the Miner Hat; while wearing it, they will provide light and not panic during dusk or in a Cave, while also preventing nearby Pigs from panicking.

McDonalds is not really good enough to feed to pigs because at the end of the day, humans will eat the pigs so it is not a safe thing to do. I would not even feed it to animals that are not in the human food chain because McDonalds is just not healthy. McDonalds is a worldwide exporter of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Hamburger chef Jamie Oliver has won his long-fought battle against one of the largest fast food chains in the world – McDonalds. After Oliver showed how McDonalds hamburgers are made, the franchise finally announced that it will change its recipe, and yet there was barely a peep about this in the mainstream, corporate media. 

McDonalds is without any morals, money is ruler and king, the be all and the end all. In reply to all of the bad press this process has received from Oliver, the company Arcos Dorados, the franchise manager for McDonalds in Latin America, said such a procedure is not practiced in their region. McDonalds is lucky that someone does not force their top management to eat their own muck day in and day out for every meal. On the official website of McDonalds, the company claims that their meat is cheap because, while serving many people every day, they are able to buy from their suppliers at a lower price, and offer the best quality products. On the site, McDonalds has admitted that they have abandoned the beef filler from its burger patties. 

McDonald’s use 19 ingredients in their french fries alone but that is after they have been grown with very strong pesticides, including probable carcinogens like chlorothalonil and pendimethalin, chlorpyrifos, PCNB and 2,4‐D. Pesticide drift is a major problem, negatively impacting public health and the environment killing livestock of the neighboring farmers. If you still prefer to eat at McDonald’s good luck to you.

Cattle feeding

Different cattle feeding production systems have separate advantages and disadvantages. Some corn-fed cattle are fattened in concentrated animal feeding operations known as feed lots. Because much of the land is better suited for cattle grazing than crop growing, it raises 40 percent of the cattle in Canada – about five million head. The other three western provinces are also well endowed with grazing land, so nearly 90 percent of Canadian beef cattle are raised in Alberta and the other western provinces. According to the United States Department of Agriculture there are 25-33 million head of feed cattle moving through custom and commercial cattle feedyards annually. 

The feed cattle enterprise is an industry where millions of dollars move through these custom and private cattle feeding facilities every year. The business of feeding cattle is based on a commodity market mechanism. Cattle production worldwide is differentiated by animal genetics and feeding methods, resulting in differing quality types. Grain-fed cattle have more internal fat which results in a more tender meat than forage-fed cattle of a similar age. Another effect of feeding flax in cattle ration is an observed increase in the daily dry matter intake. 

Although the direct beneficial effects of feeding omega-3 fatty acids remain uncertain, the preventative effect from feeding omega-3s to stressed cattle have shown great promise. In 1997, regulations prohibited the feeding of mammalian byproducts to ruminants such as cattle and goats. Campylobacter, a bacterium that can cause another foodborne illness resulting in nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle pain was found by Australian researchers to be carried by 58% of cattle raised in feed lots versus only 2% of pasture raised and finished cattle.

Many religions have rules about which meat may or may not be eaten, and vegetarian people abstain from eating meat because of concerns about the ethics of eating meat or about the effects of meat production or consumption. Another important trend in contemporary meat production is organic farming which, while providing no organoleptic benefit to meat so produced, meets an increasing demand for organic meat. Vegetarians choose not to eat meat because of ethical, economic, environmental, religious or health concerns that are associated with meat production and consumption. Poultry meat has increased by 76.6% per kilo per capita and pig meat by 19.7%. However, on the contrary, bovine meat has decreased from 10.4 kilograms/capita in 1990 to 9.6 kilograms/capita in 2009. 

The redness of meat depends on species, animal age, and fibre type: Red meat contains more narrow muscle fibres that tend to operate over long periods without rest, :93. While taste quality may vary between meats, the proteins, vitamins, and minerals available from meats are generally consistent. Decades of breeding meat animals for fatness is being reversed by consumer demand for meat with less fat. The fatty deposits that exist with the muscle fibers in meats soften meat when it is cooked and improve the flavor through chemical changes initiated through heat that allow the protein and fat molecules to interact. Meat is often spiced or seasoned, particularly with meat products such as sausages. 

Some studies fail to find a link between red meat consumption and heart disease, while another study, a survey, conducted in 1960, of 25,153 California Seventh-Day Adventists, found that the risk of heart disease is three times greater for 45- to 64-year-old men who eat meat daily, versus those who did not eat meat. Ethical issues regarding the consumption of meat include objecting to the act of killing animals or to the agricultural practices used in meat production. Research into the consumer psychology of meat is relevant both to meat industry marketing and to advocates of reduced meat consumption.

The nitrogen cycle and health

Nitrogen is necessary for life on earth to continue and the nitrogen cycle is one of the most important nutrient cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. The natural cycle of nitrogen is complex; although the concentration of nitrogen in the air is one million times its concentration in living organisms, it is not readily available for use. The cycle is concluded when denitrifying bacteria in soil convert nitrates in anaerobic soil to either nitrogen gas or nitrous oxide and these gasses then return to the atmosphere. The energy from lightening converts oxygen and nitrogen to nitric oxide, which then oxidizes to nitrogen dioxide, and then to nitric acid. There has been a recent intervention in this complex cycle; human modification of the nitrogen cycle has been profound and human activity now removes approximately 120 million tons of nitrogen from the atmosphere into reactive forms every year, more than all of the Earth’s terrestrial processes combined. 

Nitrogen is now as ubiquitous in water as carbon dioxide is in air , and significantly, the denitrifying bacteria which convert nitrogen compounds back into atmospheric nitrogen are unable to return the quantities of nitrogen now being released. As nature’s ability to process this excess nitrogen and return it to the atmosphere is overwhelmed, nitrogen compounds build up in the air, water and the soil. Reactive nitrogen is an important driver of air pollution worldwide and as sulphur emissions have lessened, nitrogen is now the principal acidifying component in acid rain. Nitrogen may join with oxygen to form nitrogen oxide, a precursor of smog, and also a respiratory irritant. Aside from recognizing the vital importance of conserving our wetlands, the habitat of the denitrifying bacteria which enable nitrogen to return to the atmosphere, there are several ways by which we can work to restore the balance to the nitrogen cycle. 

The nitrogen cycle is one of our human life-support systems, supporting human life and life on our planet. Our disruption of the nitrogen cycle is a public health issue of profound importance.

Pork and Organ Meat Health Benefits

Meat contains the B vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin; and a few minerals, such as calcium, potassium, and iron. A recent 10-year study, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, found that people red meat a week are more likely to develop colon cancer than people who don’t. Pork has a higher proportion of unsaturated fats than other meats; its cholesterol content is also high: 80mg in a 3-ounce pork chop and 100mg in 3 ounces of spare ribs. Many of us overlooked at the importance of organ meats in our diet. Compared to regular cuts of muscle meat, organ meats are more densely packed with just about every nutrient, including heavy doses of B vitamins such as: B1, B2, B6, folic acid and vitamin B12. 

Organ meats are also loaded with minerals like phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium and iodine, and provide the important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Brains are higher in cholesterol than any other food; a 4-ounce serving of beef brains has more than 2,000 mg, and pork brains contain an even larger amount. On the plus side, they are an excellent source of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 helps alleviate fatigue, increase mental ability, beneficial in nerve’s health, and depression, as well as helps prevent anemia. A 4-ounce serving of beef liver provides more than 10 times the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A. 

Good source of vitamin B12. Liver contains 35 to 50 times the RDA of vitamin B12. Iron and zinc. Heart provides high-quality protein and less fat and cholesterol than other organ meats. Heart is high in vitamin B12, iron, and potassium; in addition, also contains Selenium, Phosphorus & Zinc, along with essential amino acids that help build muscle, store energy and boost stamina and endurance. 

Tongue contains useful amounts of most of the B vitamins, especially B12. Tripe provides high-quality protein, a fair amount of potassium, and small amounts of minerals. Cooking Tip: Heart muscle meat is a bit tougher than other meats, but marinating the meat in an acidic-based marinade helps to tenderize it and add delicious flavor as well. Excessive liver consumption can cause a buildup of vitamin A. Add liver in your regular diet at least once a week if possible for maximum benefit of its high levels of nutrients.

If the judge really likes the pig, he or she will point to the pig and ask that it be penned. Once the judge pens the pigs he or she likes best, the other pigs will be excused from the show ring and the penned pigs released into the show ring for a more detailed evaluation.

Common Guinea Pig Health Problems

Guinea pigs are generally very active animals, and signs of any health problems become immediately visible. The deterioration rate of the guinea pig is very fast and if not treated immediately, it could result in sudden death. It is better to avoid feeding your guinea pigs with foods rich in starches, sugar, carbohydrates and fruits. Streptococcal infections are bacterial infections that could be fatal to the guinea pig if not treated in the early stages. Guinea pigs generally do not refrain from eating and hence, if you see the pig refraining from food, then it is important to immediately seek medical help as there is a very high possibility that the guinea pig is sick. 

Anorexia results in the breaking of liver cells which deteriorates the health of the pig rapidly. Heart problems and blood circulation problems manifest by excessive panting, snout and blue-tinged lips. The guinea pig should not strain more than 10 minutes while delivering the baby or stop trying to deliver due to exhaustion. The pigs squeal too much while delivering and the placenta is not produced during the delivery. Pigs suffering from diarrhea look very ill and are not active. 

This is generally mistaken for another disease called scurvy caused due to lack of vitamin C. Open wounds, scaly skin, excessive scratching and pain are signs of fungal infections in the pigs. Guinea pigs do not recover automatically if they catch infections.

Despite their dirty reputation, pork is still one of the more popular forms of meat. Pigs were domesticated from the wild boar between 7,000 and 9,000 years ago in the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranean; it is also possible that boars were also independently domesticated in China. Ironically, despite their history in the Middle East, pork is forbidden in Judaism, Islam and some orthodox Christian sects. Many Buddhists and Hindus also do not eat pork, though this is due more to their vegetarianism rather than a particular doctrine against pork. Pigs are not picky eaters and are thus fed a wide range of foods. 

Pigs are raised both by individuals and on an industrial scale, and their housing depends upon the climate of the region. In warmer locales, they can usually be outside all year long; in the cold climate of the United Kingdom, they are often housed in specialized indoor pig farms during the winter. People rarely think of pigs being used for any other purpose other than their meat, but pigs sometimes have secondary jobs. In France, some pigs are trained to find black truffles, a delicious yet notoriously difficult delicacy to find. This scavenging cleans up the town and allows them to later slaughter and use the pig’s meat with minimal investment in feed. 

Pig parts are used to make all sort of things. Pig heart valves are even used as replacement for failing heart valves in humans.

The 10 Types of Guinea Pig Breeds

After commiting to the decision of raising a new baby guinea pig, you probably learned that there are actually several guinea pig breeds to choose from. One of the older species, the Abyssinian guinea pig is certainly an icebreaker for a new home visitor. Of all the different types, the Peruvian guinea pig takes the cake for the longest hair. The longest hair recorded by any guinea pig reached 20 inches long! Unlike the Abyssinian, the Peruvian has long straight hair. 

Because of the styling of the hair, I have heard some really great guinea pig names specific to the Silkie. The Texel guinea pig is truly a remarkable species that’s much sought-after by some of the biggest enthusiasts. The Rex guinea pig is another shorthaired rodent with hair no longer than 1 cm long. Rex guinea pigs are great for children because of they are much easier to take care of than most other breeds. The Himalayan guinea pig is truly a remarkable breed and is often called the siamese cats of guinea pigs. 

They originated from a lab guinea pig colony, where strains of shorthaired and hairless guinea pigs were crossed to produce this breed. Although they aren’t the most attractive breeds of guinea pigs, they have similar personalities to the other 9 types. All these guinea pig breeds have warm personalities and as long as you properly take care of them, they will love you back.

Is meat from stressed animals unhealthy?

There is little research done in Norway on how stress levels affect meat quality. Gjerlaug-Enger doesn’t think stress affects the healthiness of meat. Sections of Norwegian regulations are aimed at mitigating livestock stress. Lots of factors can have stressed your ham when it was still up and oinking. Everyone interviewed for this article agrees that nobody gains from stressed animals, because it’s detrimental to animal welfare and meat quality. 

Little research has been conducted to date regarding how livestock stress influences the health-giving qualities of meat. Aass is a researcher at the Department of Animal and Aquaculture Sciences at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences at Ås. Her work is mainly with the link between genetics and beef product quality but she also investigates environmental factors such as stress. Laila Aass explains that stressed cattle yield DFD-meat, an abbreviation for Dark, Firm and Dry. According to researchers at Norsvin, PSE-meat stems from a genetic flaw that makes the pigs unable to tackle the stress of being transported to the slaughterhouse. 

Stressed cattle can more readily develop DFD-meat, because they have less stored energy, or glycogen, in their muscle tissue. Even pigs can develop DFD, if they are starved and subjected to long-term stress, according to Eli Gjerlaug-Enger at Norsvin. The lives of livestock are often so short that long-term stress lacks time to develop, but a few pigs live quite a long time before they are butchered.

Preparation for the Show Ring Training Training a pig begins in advance of show time. Put the animal in a pen with other pigs and see if it can be controlled with other pigs around. The exhibitor should not make a pet of the pig or it will not respond well in the show ring. The animal’s hair coat will show more bloom if you begin brushing the pig prior to show time. Promptness in getting the pig to the show ring is the mark of a good exhibitor. 

Give your pig a drink of water before entering the show ring. Showing Behavior Exhibitor’s Appearance Although th e appearance of the pig and the exhibitor’s actions in the show ring are the primary considerations in a showmanship contest, do not overlook the exhibitor’s appearance. The idea is NOT to simply following your pig around the ring instead, to drive your pig around the ring to the places where the judge can get the best look at your hog. At all times, you want to keep your pig between you and the judge while moving your pig along at a slow, even pace with the least possible use of your cane. In The Ring Goals: Your goals as you drive your hog are to keep your pig 10 to 15 feet from the judge, keep your pig off of the fence, keep your pigs out of the corners, and on the move at all times.

The majority of the United States’ 118 million pigs are raised indoors in barren, cramped confined animal feeding operations, and are subjected to mutilations such as cutting off the tail and castration, both without pain medication. Pregnant sows are traditionally confined to crates for their four-month long gestation; while in the crates, these sows can only stand in place or lie down. Along with the severely restricted movement, they are deprived of any other mental and physical stimulation. The sows are transferred to another type of enclosure, farrowing crates, shortly before they give birth. As well as being intensively restrictive, these crates limit physical interactions between the sow and her piglets except for suckling.
