Housing and Feeding Your Guinea Pig

Dr. Kenneth Welle, an exotic pet veterinarian at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, has advice on housing and feeding your guinea pig. A guinea pig cage should have a solid floor covered in bedding rather than a wire-bottom cage, which can cause problems if the guinea pig catches its toes on the wire. If you use a cage with a wire floor, be sure to provide another surface where the guinea pig can relieve its feet. Cleanliness is very important for good guinea pig health.

Legume hays may be appropriate for growing guinea pigs or pregnant ones, but not for adult guinea pigs. Dr. Welle recommended limiting pellets by weight: 1 tablespoon pellets per pound of guinea pig. Young, growing guinea pigs can have unlimited access to pelleted guinea pig food. Dr.

Welle says that salt licks are not necessary for guinea pigs unless they are somehow eating mineral-deficient hay. If you do want to get your guinea pig a salt lick, the colored salt-and-mineral ones are better than the plain white ones, which have no added minerals. Salt licks can also help with getting your guinea pig to drink more water, if that is a concern. Guinea pig digestive systems are designed for grass diets, which are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates. If your guinea pig has been on such a diet, switch to a plain pellet and hay diet gradually.

Guinea Lynx :: What’s Normal?

If you suspect your guinea pig has mites, be sure to treat them as soon as possible! Aromatic greenish droppings may be caecal pellets, which the guinea pig re-ingests. Very young guinea pigs often have an orange or brown tint to their urine. BOAR GLUE. Yes, male guinea pig ejaculate is normal!

Ejaculate is generally white in color and appears rubbery. Be sure to check out your guinea pig if he is in discomfort or has difficulty urinating. To help monitor health, weigh your guinea pig weekly! Use the weight/health record pages provided in GL’s handy Cavy Health Record Book, a loose-leaf notebook, or a calendar, but be sure to record your guinea pig’s weight on a regular basis. If your guinea pig has lost four or more ounces, see a vet immediately.

WATER CONSUMPTION. Water consumption is different for each guinea pig. Make sure your guinea pig is not just playing with the water bottle if you suspect your pet is drinking too much. If your guinea pig is not eating favorite foods or is hiding it its house, something is wrong. See a vet promptly if you suspect your guinea pig is sick.

So if you decide to adopt, make sure you are there for the long haul! While rare, some guinea pigs have even lived over 10 years.

Guinea Pig Found on Hiking Trail!

The ‘myth’ of the clinical trial guinea pig

In this week’s Scrubbing Up, Dr Jonathan Sheffield, chief executive of the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network says we need to rethink our ideas about clinical trials. In a national poll in 2012, 82% of the public thought it was important for the NHS to offer opportunities to take part in clinical research, and fewer than 7% said they would never take part. The first thing to remember is that clinical research is part of what the NHS is all about. Doctors use clinical research studies to compare current treatments with potentially better ones, so that we can keep improving the care we offer NHS patients. Without the evidence that clinical research provides, medicine would never progress.

The point is, there are many different types of clinical study, covering all aspects of medicine, so the scope of research in the NHS goes way beyond most people’s perception. All clinical research studies have to go through very strict ethical and regulatory checks before they get anywhere near a patient, and the UK has one of the best records world-wide for patient safety. In the NHS, patients volunteer to take part in clinical research, and they do so for a whole number of reasons. Sometimes it is because a clinical trial can offer a new treatment option. The key point is that there are strict rules about gaining the consent of patients and carers before they take part in a clinical research study – and these rules are taken very seriously indeed.

Last year, more than half a million NHS patients chose to take part in nearly 3,000 clinical research studies. Through clinical research, we can keep making patients, and the NHS, better.

BBMP intensifies drive against stray pigs

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has intensified its drive to round up stray pigs in the backdrop of the outbreak of the Nipah virus in the neighbouring State of Kerala. According to health officials, pigs can sometimes be the intermediary hosts of the virus. To date, the civic body has failed to crack down on the pig menace and on illegal breeders on the outskirts of Bengaluru despite complaints from citizens in H.S.R. Layout, Bommanahalli, Yelahanka and Mahadevapura. In April, the civic body had floated a tender for catching stray pigs.

As per the tender, the contractor pays Rs. 70/ kg for the pigs that have been caught. Mayor R. Sampath Raj said that the civic body had also received several petitions from citizens in S.K. Garden and Tavarekere to shift privately managed pig slaughter houses. The BBMP is now considering shifting these slaughterhouses to the outskirts of Bengaluru.

Could Rover Unleash a Flu Pandemic?

TUESDAY, June 5, 2018 – Dog lovers might be distressed by the latest research on flu pandemics. In the new study, scientists suggest that your beloved furry companion could trigger a flu pandemic among people in the future. That all spells trouble for humans, because they spend so much time in close quarters with their pups, the researchers noted. Fifteen years ago, researchers found that a flu virus in a horse infected a dog, leading to the first circulating flu viruses in dogs. Five years ago, researchers identified a bird-origin flu virus circulating in farm dogs in China.

The findings, published June 5 in the journal mBio, show the need to take steps to limit the circulation of flu viruses in dogs, according to the researchers. Future studies will assess whether humans are immune to canine H1N1 or not, the researchers said.

Guinea Pig Care : Introduction to Pet Guinea Pig Care

10 Tips on Caring for a Guinea Pig

Ideal housing for guinea pigs are hutches approximately 0.9 sq metre per adult guinea pig, although they need plenty of exercise outside their hutch. Hutches should be completely stripped out and scrubbed, ideally once a week during the summer and more regularly during the winter when guinea pigs spend more time inside. In the winter it’s also advisable to put plenty of hay in the hutch for your guinea pig to burrow in. Guinea pigs need fibre rich diets, such as hay or grass, to help digest food and maintain healthy teeth. Hay and grass should be supplemented with a complete food for guinea pigs, which is different to the food given to rabbits as guinea pigs can’t produce their own Vitamin C and they also require high levels of Vitamin A.

Guinea pigs can also be given fresh vegetables, in moderation. Guinea pigs need to eat fibre to wear down their continuously growing teeth. It’s advisable to clip the claws approximately once a month, however the more a guinea pig walks or runs on a hard surface the less frequently they will need clipping as they will wear down themselves. Regular exercise is important to keep guinea pigs fit and prevent boredom, which could lead to behavioural problems. It’s advisable to keep guinea pigs in social groups to encourage them to interact and socialise.

Rub your hands over your guinea pig’s body including his head, legs and feet to check for any lumps or bumps or anything stuck in his pads. Regularly examine your guinea pig’s mouth for signs of disease and overgrown teeth. Monitor your guinea pig’s body condition by running your hands over his ribs and backbone.

Guinea pig insurance

Find out what you need to know about buying and insuring a guinea pig with the help of our guide. Guinea pigs can make a great first pet for children or young families as they are known to be very low maintenance and fun creatures. If you’re looking to insure a guinea pig, follow that link through to the site of our preferred provider, ExoticDirect, who provide an extensive range of cover for different types of animals, including guinea pigs. ExoticDirect’s guinea pigs policy covers veterinary fees for an accident or illness which will be capped at a certain level per policy period. They can be sociable critters, and if it’s possible to house your pet with other friendly guinea pigs it’s recommended.

If you are buying more than one to live together, always check their sex or you may end up with lots of baby guinea pigs on your hands! As natural grazers, the majority of your guinea pig’s diet should be hay and fresh grass, as well as daily fresh vegetables and greens. Grass-based guinea pig pellets should provide your pet with the vitamin C that they require as they aren’t able to make it themselves. Unnecessary changes to your guinea pig’s diet should be avoided as they have very sensitive digestive systems. If you aren’t sure whether you should feed your guinea pig a certain food, consult with your vet first.

Guinea pigs are naturally preyed upon by other animals such as cats and foxes, so they must have an area where they can avoid being seen. Guinea pigs enjoy having toys to play with and chews to file down their constantly growing front teeth.

RSPCA Victoria

Long-haired guinea pigs can be especially hard to look after. BehaviourIn the wild, guinea pigs live in large social groups. Two adult guinea pigs that don’t know each other may fight. We do not recommend that guinea pigs and rabbits be housed together. BreedingThe RSPCA strongly advises that you do not breed from your guinea pigs as it is very difficult to find good homes for the young.

HealthGuinea pigs should be checked regularly for overgrown claws and teeth. Long haired guinea pigs in particular may suffer from the potentially fatal disease flystrike, cause by flies laying eggs in soiled fur. To avoid this, make sure the guinea pig’s home is cleaned every day and their bedding changed regularly. Groom guinea pigs every day, checking their fur all over for any dirt, especially under the tail. If a guinea pig develops bald patches this could be the fungal disease ringworm.

FoodGuinea pigs can suffer from vitamin C deficiency, which causes weight loss, general weakness and swollen joints. Like people, guinea pigs cannot make Vitamin C and need to eat fresh greens every day.

Peter Gurney: Educator of Guinea Pig Lovers

Peter Gurney came to appreciate guinea pigs rather late in life-he was 48 years old when he owned his first cavy. He spent the last 20 years of his life learning everything he could about them, and the best part is that he worked tirelessly to pass his knowledge on to other guinea pig lovers. In trying to take care of his pets, he realised that most veterinarians have a dearth of knowledge about guinea pigs. With her worthy assistance he was able to put together several books about the care and health of guinea pigs-and he educated quite a few small animal veterinarians as well as pet owners. As people like Mrs.

Stanley and Gurney gained knowledge about the best care for guinea pigs and then took the next step of sharing that information, many RCVS vets protested. Gurney participated in a roiling controversy about whether to anaesthetise guinea pigs for dental work. His best accomplishments were the books he put out for every guinea pig owner to own in order to provide the best possible care for pets. This second book is a veritable wealth of information for guinea pig owners, and its infinite supply of information is well illustrated with over 200 photos that make the author’s point easy to understand for people of all ages. In 2006, after successful years advocating for the health and care of guinea pigs-and all animals-Gurney lost his battle with cancer.

Gurney’s website still provides a wealth of information for guinea pig lovers. Every year on the 9th March, which was his birthday, guinea pig lovers all over the world light a candle. If you’d like to do this next March, you can email the Guinea Pigs Daily Digest with your location, and the website will display a map pinpointing all the locations-all over the world-where people still remember Peter Gurney.

Guinea pig health check ~ 5 simple steps | YasminesCavies

I was an ObamaCare guinea pig

For the past three years, since leaving a job at a non-profit organization and then exhausting my COBRA, I have relied on the individual insurance market to get coverage for myself, my partner and our daughter. Three years ago when I was shopping for insurance, there weren’t that many options to choose from. So I logged onto the New York State health insurance exchange website. Early on the first Saturday morning following the launch of the exchange site – probably because the rest of the state was still asleep – I was able to log-in and complete my registration and check out all my options for insurance. There were literally 50 plans that were better than my current insurance – both with lower premiums, lower out-of-pocket costs and better coverage.

There were ten plans with a higher premium than my current insurance, but with lower deductibles. While the exchange site was user-friendly and explained my options in a clear and simple way, picking an insurance plan isn’t exactly like ordering a hamburger. Plus in the past, I spent several days looking for and comparing insurance options. Counter to wild stories about the government taking over health care, the exchange was simply a public portal to a range of all-private insurance options. One of the most exciting things is the new companies providing private insurance through the exchange; I’ll be watching the reviews over the next year and might change plans when re-enrollment comes around.

As of October 20, the Associated Press reported that 476,000 Americans had filled out insurance applications through the federal and state exchanges. The fact is that ObamaCare has created a private marketplace so that millions of American families like mine can get affordable, quality health insurance while keeping more of our hard-earned money.

Students will be provided a copy of the simulation program to work at their own pace for this assignment. The aim of this assignment activity is to provide an opportunity for you to design and perform experiments to investigate the properties of agonist and antagonist drugs using the isolated ileum of the guinea pig, and investigate the pharmacological effect and mechanism of action of given antagonist drugs on the contractility of isolated guinea pig ileum. Experimental Setup: The software simulates an experimental setup on an isolated piece of guinea pig ileum removed from a freshly killed guinea pig and suspended in warmed and aerated physiological solution called Tyrode’s solution. The tissue is carefully suspended in an organ bath with the bottom end of the tissue fixed and the top end attached to a freely moving isotonic lever which is in turn connected to a transducer. The lever responds to the contractions of the longitudinal muscle in the ileum and the resulting movement is converted into an electrical signal by the transducer.

The electrical signals are then sent to a chart recorder which displays the signals as a trace. The organ bath is kept at a constant temperature of 37C by means of a water jacket which circulates water at the required temperature. A variety of drugs are added into the organ bath to observe the effect on.2 intestinal contractility. The set up also allows examining how antagonists can interfere with agonists at tissue level. Experimental Procedure: When performing experiments in which you are.

Antibiotics are used to help treat many different bacterial diseases of pigs, and can be given as injections, in the feed or as a spray. Please contact your veterinary surgeon if you are concerned with the health or welfare of any animal under your care. When used correctly, antibiotics have an important role in improving health and welfare of pigs. There are concerns that resistance or resistant bacteria could be transferred from animal to human health, and vice versa, and reduce the effectiveness of some antibiotic treatments. It is vital that antibiotics are used in the correct and appropriate manner to minimise this possibility.

MSD Animal Health supports the responsible use of antibiotics. Many farm assurance schemes also produce similar guidelines to support best practice. Amfipen LA® 100 mg/ml Suspension for injectionAmoxypen® Injection 150 mg/ml Suspension for injectionAmoxypen LA® 150 mg/ml Suspension for injectionDepocillin® 300 mg/ml Suspension for injectionEngemycin® 10 % Solution for injectionEngemycin® 10 % Farm Pack Solution for injectionEngemycin LA® 200 mg/ml Solution for injectionEngemycin Spray® 25 mg/ml cutaneous spray, suspension for cattle, sheep and pigsNeopen® Suspension for injectionNuflor® 40 mg/g Premix for Medicated Feeding Stuff for Swine.

Owning and Caring for Pet Guinea Pigs

The Guinea Pig, a South American native, is not a pig. While the Guinea Pig is most active during the day, it will also play with you at night – just make sure it rests. Unlike Hamsters they prefer not to be alone, and enjoy the company of other Guinea Pigs. This, of course, could lead to more Guinea Pigs, so be sure of the sexes if you do not intend to breed. There are thirteen recognized breeds of Guinea Pigs.

Older Guinea Pigs can still be trained, and you may be saving a life. The Guinea Pig of your choice should be alert and active, its eyes clear and bright, ears clean, its nose clear of any crusty deposits, and its coat full and shiny. Guinea Pigs usually end up being about a foot long, so keep that in mind when you visit Century21. Your Guinea Pig will benefit from fresh Guinea Pig pellets available at your pet store. The Guinea Pig gets much of its day’s water requirements from these foods.

Guinea Pigs are generally very hardy and healthy, but they do have some common ailments. Talk with your vet about using more nutrient rich foods, and foods that are easier for an older Guinea Pig to eat.

Vietnamese Pot-bellied Pigs

A potbellied pig is a unique, fun, and affectionate pet. Potbellied Pigs are…. SOCIAL. They like living with other pigs. Single pigs are much more likely to have behavior problems, including aggression towards humans, than pigs with at least one other piggy companion.

When it comes to potbellied pigs, two heads are definitely better than one! Potbellied pigs are highly affectionate and love getting attention from people. Because they are such social creatures, potbellied pigs do not do well when left alone for long periods of time. If the dog has a high prey drive, he may attack and kill the pig. Pigs and dogs should not be left alone together unsupervised.

The bored pig will be destructive to the home or yard when looking for something to do. CLEAN. Untrue to the common stereotypes, potbellied pigs are very clean animals. Potbellied pigs need…. COMPANIONSHIP.

Lonely pigs do not make good pets. NUTRITION. Good nutrition is also an important part of keeping a pig at a healthy weight.
