Guinea Pig Model for Evaluating the Potential Public Health Risk of Swine and Avian Influenza Viruses

We investigated the guinea pig as a mammalian model for the study of the replication and transmission characteristics of selected swine H1N1, H1N2, H3N2 and avian H9N2 influenza viruses, compared to those of pandemic 2009 and seasonal human H1N1, H3N2 influenza viruses. None of the swine and avian influenza viruses showed transmissibility among guinea pigs; in contrast, pandemic 2009 virus transmitted from infected guinea pigs to all animals and seasonal human influenza viruses could also horizontally transmit in guinea pigs. We propose that the guinea pig could serve as a useful mammalian model to evaluate the potential public health threat of swine and avian influenza viruses. Animal influenza viruses have repeatedly transmitted to humans with increasing genetic diversity, such as avian H5N1 and H9N2 influenza viruses, and swine H1N1, H1N2, H3N2 influenza viruses , , which served as an important reminder that another influenza pandemic is highly likely. Among these swine and avian influenza viruses, in addition to highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza viruses, many low pathogenic viruses are also high on the list of candidates that could potentially cause the next human pandemic.

Thus far, influenza studies using the guinea pig model have been performed with 1918 pandemic , 2009 pandemic H1N1 , seasonal human H1N1 and H3N2 , , and avian H5N1 influenza viruses , , , but little is known about other swine and avian influenza virus infections, particularly those isolated in recent years. To evaluate the applicability of the guinea pig model for swine and avian influenza viruses, we describe the infectivity and transmissibility in guinea pigs of the subtypes of viruses that repeatedly transmit to humans compared with 2009 pandemic and human seasonal influenza viruses. In the present study, we investigated the guinea pig as a mammalian model for the study of the replication and transmission characteristics of selected swine H1N1, H1N2, H3N2 and avian H9N2 influenza viruses. Our results showed that all the tested swine and avian influenza viruses replicated effectively in guinea pig nasal tracts without prior adaptation and the replication of these viruses was restricted to the respiratory system. The replication characteristics of swine and avian influenza viruses were similar to those of pandemic 2009 and seasonal human H1N1, H3N2 influenza viruses in addition to those of other influenza viruses reported by previous studies , ,.

These studies show the utility of the guinea pig model for not only the evaluation of the transmissibility of pandemic influenza strains, human seasonal viruses and H5N1 influenza viruses, but could also be used for low pathogenic swine and avian influenza viruses to help recognize the strains that possess potential human-to-human transmission ability. In summary, we found the high susceptibility of guinea pigs to swine and avian influenza viruses, the correlation of transmissibility of these animal influenza viruses in guinea pigs with those in humans and the similar receptor distribution in the respiratory system of guinea pigs to those of humans.

Long-haired guinea pigs can be especially hard to look after. BehaviourIn the wild, guinea pigs live in large social groups. Two adult guinea pigs that don’t know each other may fight. We do not recommend that guinea pigs and rabbits be housed together. BreedingThe RSPCA strongly advises that you do not breed from your guinea pigs as it is very difficult to find good homes for the young.

HealthGuinea pigs should be checked regularly for overgrown claws and teeth. Long haired guinea pigs in particular may suffer from the potentially fatal disease flystrike, cause by flies laying eggs in soiled fur. To avoid this, make sure the guinea pig’s home is cleaned every day and their bedding changed regularly. Groom guinea pigs every day, checking their fur all over for any dirt, especially under the tail. If a guinea pig develops bald patches this could be the fungal disease ringworm.

FoodGuinea pigs can suffer from vitamin C deficiency, which causes weight loss, general weakness and swollen joints. Like people, guinea pigs cannot make Vitamin C and need to eat fresh greens every day.

Health food for guinea pigs

This means that, next to the appropriate care and accommodation, you pay attention to a good diet. Guinea pigs may develop obesity or bladder, gastrointestinal, kidney and/or dental problems. Nutrition plays a major role in the prevention thereof. Fibres are very important for the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract of the guinea pig. In order to provide guinea pigs with sufficient dietary fibre, it is essential to provide unlimited daily access to fresh hay.

In addition to fibres from hay, guinea pigs also require various other nutrients. TROVET kibbles contain important nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals with the optimal proportion of nutrients your guinea pig requires. TROVET Guinea Pig is quality food that helps to keep your pet healthy and vital.

Housing and Feeding Your Guinea Pig

Dr. Kenneth Welle, an exotic pet veterinarian at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, has advice on housing and feeding your guinea pig. A guinea pig cage should have a solid floor covered in bedding rather than a wire-bottom cage, which can cause problems if the guinea pig catches its toes on the wire. If you use a cage with a wire floor, be sure to provide another surface where the guinea pig can relieve its feet. Cleanliness is very important for good guinea pig health.

Legume hays may be appropriate for growing guinea pigs or pregnant ones, but not for adult guinea pigs. Dr. Welle recommended limiting pellets by weight: 1 tablespoon pellets per pound of guinea pig. Young, growing guinea pigs can have unlimited access to pelleted guinea pig food. Dr.

Welle says that salt licks are not necessary for guinea pigs unless they are somehow eating mineral-deficient hay. If you do want to get your guinea pig a salt lick, the colored salt-and-mineral ones are better than the plain white ones, which have no added minerals. Salt licks can also help with getting your guinea pig to drink more water, if that is a concern. Guinea pig digestive systems are designed for grass diets, which are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates. If your guinea pig has been on such a diet, switch to a plain pellet and hay diet gradually.

Guinea Lynx :: What’s Normal?

If you suspect your guinea pig has mites, be sure to treat them as soon as possible! Aromatic greenish droppings may be caecal pellets, which the guinea pig re-ingests. Very young guinea pigs often have an orange or brown tint to their urine. BOAR GLUE. Yes, male guinea pig ejaculate is normal!

Ejaculate is generally white in color and appears rubbery. Be sure to check out your guinea pig if he is in discomfort or has difficulty urinating. To help monitor health, weigh your guinea pig weekly! Use the weight/health record pages provided in GL’s handy Cavy Health Record Book, a loose-leaf notebook, or a calendar, but be sure to record your guinea pig’s weight on a regular basis. If your guinea pig has lost four or more ounces, see a vet immediately.

WATER CONSUMPTION. Water consumption is different for each guinea pig. Make sure your guinea pig is not just playing with the water bottle if you suspect your pet is drinking too much. If your guinea pig is not eating favorite foods or is hiding it its house, something is wrong. See a vet promptly if you suspect your guinea pig is sick.

So if you decide to adopt, make sure you are there for the long haul! While rare, some guinea pigs have even lived over 10 years.

How to health check a guinea pig

General Care of the Pig |

GENERAL CARE OF THE PIG. Pigs can be very clean and intelligent animals, especially if they are brought up to be clean from birth. There are various stages of pigs in their growing stages; starter, grower, finisher, and breeding. The space requirement will vary with the size and age of the pig. The Chinese pigs have more fat than the American pigs.

While growing pigs are fed free choice, we advise controlling the feed of grown pigs. Pigs are normally castrated at about one week of age. Removal of the canine teeth is not recommended in any pig species due to the complications involved from a jaw fracture to jawbone infection. The amount of feed converted to pig, or feed efficiency should average 3.5 pounds of feed for 1 pound of gain. Usually the sow is treated before breeding and 2 weeks before farrowing with products that are labeled for pregnant pigs.

Most worming medicines do not deworm the pig for coccidiosis and other parasites that area found on a fecal exam. If you purchase a pig keep the bill of sale in your pig health record file; if this pig is later sold and/or you plan to slaughter it you will need such documentation in Colorado. Pig notches and tattoos have not been recognized as official identification since 2013.

CARE SHEET FOR MINI PIGS

Pigs do not really care for baths and a trick we use is we put Cheerios in the tub for them while we bathe them. Your mini pig should be dewormed at least twice a year. Good for mites and lice!* Can be used in pregnant & nursing pigs. DOES NOT treat mites or lice!* Can be used in pregnant & nursing pigs. Mini pigs may need to have their hooves trimmed a couple times a year.

The only safe anesthesia to use on a mini pig is ISO. Remember this if your mini pig ever needs surgery for any reason! Most vaccines are for farm pigs, for one particular strain of disease, which mini pigs rarely if ever get. You need to check with your local vet, and for any laws requiring vaccinations in your area! Make sure your vet knows how to dose a mini pig!!!

Some veterinarians do recommend Rabies vaccines to protect your pet pig in case she/he bites a person. This can be prevented with a rabies vaccine! Pigs CAN contract rabies although it isn’t likely. There is no approved rabies vaccine specifically for pigs, but they can still have the vaccine for legal protection or requirements. This is done behind the lower ear lobe because they have found that when the young pigs are chipped where dogs are the chip gets lost as they get older.

Caring for your Guinea Pig

Vitamin C – Guinea Pigs are like humans they need vitamin C. You can get some brands of Guinea Pig food that have it added however this should not be considered a reasonable substitute for feeding your Guinea Pig fresh food. If your Guinea Pig is not eating or drinking this is very serious. Checking your Guinea Pigs eyes, nose and ears daily will alert you to any infections they may have picked up. If your Guinea Pig has any sores or any signs of an infection you must take the Cavy to the vet.

A Guinea Pig can be close to dying by the time you may notice. Guinea Pigs nails need regular trimming so they do not grow excessively. Guinea Pigs must have hay to grind their teeth down with. Signs that your Guinea Pigs teeth may be over grown are they may have salvia around their mouth, or it could possibly show by a lack of interest in food. I have read many different views on how often you should bath a Guinea Pig.

The first time was to clear his fur of mites that he had picked up from the pet store I had brought him from. If you have a long haired Guinea Pig you are going to have to groom them daily. Her fur has grown slowly over the 6 months I have had her and when I cut it off, her fur was roughly 3inches long.

My guinea pig has bad poop problems help! Urgent!?

Either he ate something his tummy could not really digest or he ate too much of something fibery. If any bits are missing or chewed up, he may need to see a vet as his digestive track can stop working completely, he won’t be able to eat, he can become toxic or starve. If it is too hard or big, it can cause a tear which will lead to a very bad infection he will have a hard time fighting off. At this rate, he cannot get it out himself and anything you can do for him will only make it worse or not do enough in the amount of time he has. The best you can do is make sure he gets in lots of liquids.

Hopefully this will help thin out what is blocked up. Avoid food that is too fibery until you can get him to a vet.

Guinea Pig Care : Introduction to Pet Guinea Pig Care

10 Tips on Caring for a Guinea Pig

Ideal housing for guinea pigs are hutches approximately 0.9 sq metre per adult guinea pig, although they need plenty of exercise outside their hutch. Hutches should be completely stripped out and scrubbed, ideally once a week during the summer and more regularly during the winter when guinea pigs spend more time inside. In the winter it’s also advisable to put plenty of hay in the hutch for your guinea pig to burrow in. Guinea pigs need fibre rich diets, such as hay or grass, to help digest food and maintain healthy teeth. Hay and grass should be supplemented with a complete food for guinea pigs, which is different to the food given to rabbits as guinea pigs can’t produce their own Vitamin C and they also require high levels of Vitamin A.

Guinea pigs can also be given fresh vegetables, in moderation. Guinea pigs need to eat fibre to wear down their continuously growing teeth. It’s advisable to clip the claws approximately once a month, however the more a guinea pig walks or runs on a hard surface the less frequently they will need clipping as they will wear down themselves. Regular exercise is important to keep guinea pigs fit and prevent boredom, which could lead to behavioural problems. It’s advisable to keep guinea pigs in social groups to encourage them to interact and socialise.

Rub your hands over your guinea pig’s body including his head, legs and feet to check for any lumps or bumps or anything stuck in his pads. Regularly examine your guinea pig’s mouth for signs of disease and overgrown teeth. Monitor your guinea pig’s body condition by running your hands over his ribs and backbone.

Guinea pig insurance

Find out what you need to know about buying and insuring a guinea pig with the help of our guide. Guinea pigs can make a great first pet for children or young families as they are known to be very low maintenance and fun creatures. If you’re looking to insure a guinea pig, follow that link through to the site of our preferred provider, ExoticDirect, who provide an extensive range of cover for different types of animals, including guinea pigs. ExoticDirect’s guinea pigs policy covers veterinary fees for an accident or illness which will be capped at a certain level per policy period. They can be sociable critters, and if it’s possible to house your pet with other friendly guinea pigs it’s recommended.

If you are buying more than one to live together, always check their sex or you may end up with lots of baby guinea pigs on your hands! As natural grazers, the majority of your guinea pig’s diet should be hay and fresh grass, as well as daily fresh vegetables and greens. Grass-based guinea pig pellets should provide your pet with the vitamin C that they require as they aren’t able to make it themselves. Unnecessary changes to your guinea pig’s diet should be avoided as they have very sensitive digestive systems. If you aren’t sure whether you should feed your guinea pig a certain food, consult with your vet first.

Guinea pigs are naturally preyed upon by other animals such as cats and foxes, so they must have an area where they can avoid being seen. Guinea pigs enjoy having toys to play with and chews to file down their constantly growing front teeth.

RSPCA Victoria

Peter Gurney

Born at Luton on March 9 1938, Peter Gurney was educated at Beech Hill Secondary Modern and did his National Service with the Navy. His career as a guinea pig expert began when he was 48; he was twice divorced and facing redundancy when he bought a guinea pig from his local pet shop. Soon he was sharing his small flat with many guinea pigs and he began campaigning for cavy welfare. Gurney wrote several books about guinea pig care; he ran a comprehensive website, gave talks and spent hours dispensing free advice over the telephone day and night. In 1990 it occurred to him that the children at Great Ormond Street Hospital might enjoy being visited by guinea pigs, and the hospital welcomed the idea.

Gurney would arrive by Underground pulling a long, narrow plywood box on wheels with wire mesh down one side; inside would be five guinea pigs. He would place an animal on a child’s lap and talk about what interested him most – guinea pigs. He began to take a close interest in guinea pig medicine, which put him on a collision course with vets. In 1992 he was diagnosed with kidney cancer, and, during his recovery, wrote his first book, The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs, taking all the photographs himself. Bond’s then guinea pig, Olga, had been off-colour but recovered as a result of Gurney’s ministrations.

Gurney wrote a number of other books, including The Sex Life of the Guinea Pig, which he promoted on a tour of the United States. Earlier this year he was told that he was losing his battle with cancer and made careful arrangements to find new homes for his guinea pigs, 40 of whom survive him.

nutrition

AN OVERVIEW OF CAVY NUTRITION Providing your cavy with a diet tailored to suit its nutritional needs can be a challenging task. If you know what your cavies needs are it can be easily done. To understand what a cavies body requires we first must understand how its digestive system works. Biological Structure A cavies digestive system is designed to obtain cellulose from various vegetation, primarily in the form of hay. Without a diet high in fibre a cavy will suffer from severe digestive upset which can vastly lead to other illnesses and lower the immune system.

If you have a diet high in protein and low in fibre it can compromise the health of your cavy. You do not need to overcompensate with a diet high in fats and sugars, a cavy should have a diet tailored to suit its digestive and nutritional needs. In certain cases such as where a cavy needs to gain weight oats can be given as a supplement in their diet. Pellets should have a fat percentage of preferably 1- 2%. Calcium to Phosphorus The calcium: phosphorus ratio is also an important part of a cavies diet.

In a cavies diet you need to have a higher calcium to phosphorus ratio. If you observe any white substances being excreted out of your cavies system through its urine you know that there is an excess of calcium in the system and you must analyze your diet to ensure that you decrease that amount. Providing your cavy with the correct percentage or fats, protein, fibre, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus enables owners to ensure that their cavies digestive system is not compromised and enables correct digestion.

Marty the CyberPig

Guinea pigs have compact bodies and flat faces, and all teeth are open rooted. Male guinea pigs are called boars and females are called sows. Guinea pigs orphaned during the first four days of life may be given ground guinea pig pellets soaked in cow’s milk. Grabbing a guinea pig over its back may inhibit respiratory movements. Guinea pigs are strict herbivores and cecal fermenters, as are rabbits and horses. Guinea pigs should be fed a feed prepared specifically for the species. A commercial pelleted guinea pig diet containing 18 to 20 % protein, 4 % fat and 16 % fiber is highly recommended. Rabbit pellets are NOT the same, and should not be given to guinea pigs. Common problems in guinea pigs include vitamin C deficiency, respiratory infections, abscess, skin mites, overgrowth of premolar teeth, cystitis and bladder stones. Kidney disease: Often terminal, common in older guinea pigs. A few organisms that infect or inhabit guinea pigs are potentially zoonotic, but these organisms are seldom associated with human disease. Allergy to guinea pig dander is another frequently reported condition in people handling guinea pigs.

Guinea Pig Health Problems

Because these parasites can cause itching, your guinea pig may scratch. How to Treat Ringworm: If you think your guinea pig might have this, you must take him to your vet. How to prevent scurvy: Guinea pigs need 10-50mg of Vitamin C daily from their diet. Your guinea pig must have fresh vegetables daily and this should provide him with the vitamin C he needs. Respiratory problems are probably the most common health complaint in guinea pigs. In some cases, such as stress, your guinea pig will develop signs of an infection. Treating pneumonia: If you think your guinea pig might have pneumonia, you must take them to the vet straight away. Your guinea pig may need antibiotics to treat any underlying infection. Guinea pigs have very sensitive tummies and need to carefully balance the bacterial flora in their gastrointestinal tracts. You may also find that your guinea pig goes off their food. Signs of Bumblefoot: Your guinea pig’s feet will look inflamed and may also have lumps and abrasions. Satin bred varieties of guinea pig are prone to this abnormal bone development and can cause considerable pain for your cavy.

Guinea Pig food and Feeding Guide

To maintain a good diet each Guinea Pig should be given 10mgs of vitamin C per day to 1kg body weight. Pets Stores and Super Markets sell Guinea Pig food that has a vitamin C supplement. Since finding out about Gerty Guinea Pig food I have noticed that a lot of pet stores call random Guinea Pig food gerty. In Super Markets and Chain Pet Stores they sell the pre-bagged Gerty Guinea Pig food in sealed bags. Kornage and Millie prefer this Guinea Pig food to the others. Fig.3 This is a no name Guinea Pig food with added vitamin C. This is Nutmeg’s favourite dried food. Although all the different kinds of food I have mentioned are designed for Guinea Pig’s, you can not really compensate giving Guinea Pigs fresh vegetables daily. So I am going to give you a rough guide going on what I have been feeding my Guinea Pig’s. Cucumber: If you own a Guinea Pig then you must have ‘Plenty Of Cucumber!’. Clean out all of the seeds when you give them to your Guinea Pig. My guinea pig had 1/2 grape 2 weeks ago and now may have kidney disease. Spring Onion: These should not be fed to a Guinea Pig.

Guinea pig teeth care

Let’s see what a guinea pig owner that keeps his/her pets in a small apartment needs to know about the pet’s teeth. This is the main reason why we recommend guinea pig diet that provides guinea pigs with hay 24 hours a day. Don’t forget guinea pig vitamin C supplementing. A lot of people, when they think of guinea pig teeth, think of teeth trimming. Not even all guinea pigs have the same length of teeth. In case you did not notice that your guinea pigs are not eating, maybe you will notice that the pet is loosing weight. Take the guinea pig in your hands and look at his teeth. Some guinea pig owners buy special tools to open guinea pig’s mouth and check teeth. If the guinea pig teeth are overgrown don’t trim them yourself unless you know what you are doing. If guinea pig is eating that might be all he needed. Don’t be too worried about guinea pig teeth problems because, as we mentioned, overgrown teeth are not a normal, everyday occurrence. This guinea pig can also be a loving pet but be prepared to invest much more money and time into taking care of them.
