An Ode to Oh She Glows – GUINEA PIGGING GREEN

Oh She Glows is one of those blogs I will never tire of. I’ve been making Angela’s recipes since before I was vegan. Heck, I’ve been making Angela’s recipes since before I was vegetarian! When I recommend a recipe, more often than not it’s from her blog. I love that each recipe is very accessible to people with even the most rudimentary cooking skills!

Angela’s blog is one of the reasons I’ve never used cookbooks – it is just way too easy to find simple, healthy, delicious, vegan recipes online But then she went and wrote a cookbook. Suddenly, I’m making homemade granola bars, trying not to get the pages sticky as I follow the instructions. My boyfriend, who has never been that interested in cooking, has mastered recipes such as her Creamy Avocado Pasta. This cookbook has been such a pleasure to have in our apartment and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has loved her blog like I have. Speaking of which, this gorgeous book would be a fantastic Christmas present!

Lakes country hog wild about potbelly pigs

There is no question she is passionate about her potbelly pigs. In addition to Pepper, Robyn is fostering two other pigs: Nugget and Baby. They all live with her inside the home here in Ottertail. According to the city, Robyn is in violation of rules in town. They say she has too many pigs, on too small a piece of land, and now she says she is being fined.

Robyn says she has a letter from her doctor, It says these potbelly pigs are good for Robyn’s mental health. They are sticking by its 2006 ordinance which restricts things like potbelly pigs here in town, based on the amount of land the pigs are on. Robyn promises to fight city hall, with an upcoming meeting next week, where she will ask for an exemption. All because she can’t imagine parting with any of them. Robyn hopes to present a new letter from her doctor when she argues for an exemption next Thursday night at the Ottertail Council Meeting.

Scientists coax bioengineered lung to survive for prolonged period in pig

A. fter 30 days of nourishment, the bioengineered lung – transformed from a white gauze-like material into a pale lobe of bloodless flesh – was ready for transplantation. It was carefully inserted into the patient, an 80-pound Yorkshire pig, and then the scientists waited. Together, the pig and the lung would survive for two months. Unlock this article by subscribing to STAT Plus today.

China culls pigs after 1st African swine fever outbreak -…

BEIJING, Aug 3 – Chinese authorities said on Friday they have culled almost 1,000 pigs near Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province in northeast China, after discovering an outbreak of deadly African swine fever. This is the country’s first known outbreak of the devastating livestock disease and will stoke concerns about its spread in the world’s largest pig herd. Some 913 hogs were slaughtered and the outbreak has been effectively contained, the Liaoning provincial animal health bureau said. ASF occurs among pigs and wild boars, and its effects are often deadly.

My guinea pig won’t drink any water……?

Also she might drink if you put water in a bowl that can’t be tipped over. NEVER put anything in their water It makes them drink less and degrades fast so it’s a waste. Only feed melons, strawberries, and fruit 1-2 times a week as it can cause mouth sores if fed too often. Not a thimble full, you’re thinking of hamsters.

Pigs At Fowlerville Fair Test Positive For Swine Flu

The Livingston County Health Department reports the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development identified pigs at the Fowlerville Fair that tested positive for swine flu, or influenza A. The Fowlerville Fair Board has taken steps to isolate infected pigs to prevent additional exposure. Infected pigs began showing symptoms Thursday evening and laboratory results were confirmed late Friday afternoon. At this time, there are no reported human illnesses. The Health Department and Fowlerville Fair Board are reaching out to swine exhibitors, their families, and anyone who visited the swine barn at the fair to notify them of possible exposure to infected pigs.

The Health Department is also instructing healthcare providers in the area to watch for patients with respiratory symptoms who report exposure to swine or who visited the fair. Swine flu can spread quickly between pigs and while rare, can pass to humans through droplets in the air when sick pigs cough or sneeze. Human symptoms are similar to those of seasonal flu and can include fever, cough, runny nose, and sometimes body aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Symptoms usually appear within three days of exposure but can occur up to 10 days. Currently there is no vaccine for swine flu, nor will the seasonal flu vaccine protect against swine flu; however, antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu and Relenza, are said to be an effective form of treatment.

The Health Department’s full release can be viewed at the attachment below.

Scientists Successfully Transplant Lab-Grown Lungs Into Pigs

Thanks to medical technology that has helped lead to the development of organ transplants, this has resulted in many lives being saved, where organs such as hearts, lungs, livers, and kidneys have over the years been successfully transplanted from one person to the other. The problem with transplants is that you need to find a donor that matches you. Given that some organs cannot be transplanted from a living person to another, this narrows down the availability options even more, which is one of the reasons why the black market on organs is thriving. There is a glimmer of hope on that horizon, thanks to scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch where they have successfully managed to transplant lab-grown lungs into a pig. Of course this is a long way off from creating lungs that can be transplanted into humans, but the fact that it was successfully transplanted into a pig who survived is a huge step.

Like we said, there is still a long way to go before this tech can be applied to humans, if at all. This is because there needs to be studies done to see how long/durable these lab-made lungs hold up over the years, and if there might be any negative side-effects.

Scientists Created Lab-Grown Lungs And Transplanted Them Into Pigs

Lab-grown lungs were successfully transplanted into pigs for the first time. Scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch are celebrating a breakthrough as they successfully transplanted lab-grown lungs into pigs. This took 30 days inside a bioreactor tank, where the lungs were pumped with nutrients. During the experiment, the pigs’ left lungs were transplanted alongside a bioengineered lung. While the lungs functioned during the study, they weren’t connected to pulmonary arteries.

The transplanted lungs developed blood vessels and connected to the rest of the pigs’ vascular system, according to Popular Science. Back in 2014, Joan Nichols and her team bioengineered a human lung. Engineered pig lung transplant ‘a success’ https://t. The researchers hope that the technology could one day be used for human lung transplants. Great!

U.S. researchers transplant bioengineered lungs into pigs without complication. All of pigs that received a bioengineered lung stayed healthy https://t. It looks like the road is still long before human bioengineered lung transplants could take place.

Medical Care Kit For Guinea Pigs

Trichinae Fact Sheet

The historical problem of trichinae infection in pigs is responsible for strict federal control of methods used to prepare ready-to-eat pork products in the U.S., and expensive carcass inspection requirements in Europe. While prevalence has declined considerably in U.S. pigs, the lowest prevalence rates in domestic pigs are found in countries where meat inspection programs have been in place for many years; these countries consider themselves essentially free of trichinae. Despite the fact that trichinae is rare in today’s industry, pork still suffers from its legacy. In the U.S., the traditional approach for trichinae control is strict control of processed products to inactivate trichinae and warnings to consumers of the need to cook fresh pork.

An alternative method of testing pigs for trichinae infection is an indirect method which looks for antibodies to the parasites in pig blood. These include herd testing to prove that trichinae infection is not present or raising pigs under conditions which prevent exposure. The OIE Code states the following: A country, or part of the territory of a country may be considered free from trichinae in domestic swine when: 1) trichinellosis humans and animals is compulsorily notifiable in the country; 2) there is in force an effective disease reporting system shown to be capable of capturing the occurrence of cases; and 3) it has been found that trichinae infection does not exist in the domestic swine population as determined by regular testing of a statistically significant sample of the population; or 4) trichinellosis has not been reported in five years and a surveillance program shows that the disease is absent from wild animal populations. Farm certification as a method of trichinae control – Like Canada and many other developed countries, the U.S. has an extremely low incidence of trichinae infection in pigs.

Although human trichinellosis is a reportable disease, the U.S. has no history of regular testing to determine trichinae infection in pigs, nor do most states require reporting of trichinae infection in pigs if found. Considering the existing public perception of trichinae as a problem coupled with the reality of a very low level of occurrence, the U.S. pork industry would likely benefit substantially from a program which assured the absence of trichinae from pigs. Efforts to certify pork free from trichinae should have an immediate impact on international markets by producing a product which is competitive with countries which currently inspect for trichinae.

The U.S. pork industry can’t catch up with the rest of the world on trichinae by starting now to test pigs at slaughter.

5 Secrets To Good Guinea Pig Health!

Walsh MC, Sholly DM, Hinson RB, Saddoris KL, Sutton AL, Radcliffe JS, Odgaard R. Murphy J, Richert BT. Effects of water and diet acidification with and without antibiotics on weanling pig growth and microbial shedding. 3. Stein H. Feeding the pig’s immune system and alternatives to antibiotics. 271 FACT Sheet: In-feed antibiotics Antimicrobial agents, such as antibiotics, have been used in pig production for over 50 years.

Early studies indicated significant improvements in pig growth performance when antibiotics were fed. With the improvements in production practices and health status of pig herds, positive responses to in-feed antibiotics may not be as large in today’s modern facilities. Some of the proposed possible mechanisms by which antibiotics improve growth include inhibition of subclinical pathogenic bacterial infections; reduction of microbial metabolism products that may negatively affect pig growth; inhibition of microbial growth, thereby increasing nutrients available to the pig; and an increase in uptake and utilization of nutrients through the intestinal wall.1 Efficacy of in-feed antibiotics Studies2 on the effects of antibiotic feed additives have indicated significant improvements in growth rate and feed efficiency. A more recent study3 on the use of in-feed antibiotics in modern production systems showed that such additives are still effective in improving growth in nursery pigs, although the magnitude of the response is less. Choosing the proper antibiotic When the antibiotic appropriate for a specific herd is selected, a number of important things must be considered, for example, the disease organisms present in the herd.

While in-feed antibiotic use is most prevalent in nursery diets, it is sometimes necessary to use antibiotics in grow-finish diets, eg, during outbreaks of bacterial disease. Journal of Swine Health and Production – September and October 2009 Table 2: Effectiveness of in-feed antibiotics in nursery and grow-finish pigs reared in modern production systems* Parameter Control Antibiotic† ADG 0.96† 1.01† F:G 1.44 1.42 ADG 1.72 1.72 F:G 2.90 2.90 Nursery phase Grow-finish phase * Adapted from Dritz et al, 2002.3 Data from five and four experiments, involving 3648 and 2660 pigs, for the nursery and grow-finish phases, respectively. Proper use of in-feed antibiotics While most in-feed antibiotics are available without veterinary supervision, they should not be used indiscriminately. Because of the improvements made in housing, nutrition, production, and health-management practices over the years, the impact of antibiotics on growth performance may not be as large or as consistent in response as those observed during the early years of antibiotic use.

This one is for comparing and contrasting particular stories

1.) Using a venn diagram, the students will distinguish the similarities and differences between the story The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, and the story The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. The students will demonstrate prior knowledge of the story, The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf through class discussion. Have students sit down and ask the class who has heard of the story The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. Ask questions about what only happened in the three little pigs story and write one answer in that circle. Ask what only happened in the three little wolves story and write one answer in that circle.

Then ask what happened in both stories and write one answer in the joint part of the circle. The students will be assessed on their knowledge of the story The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf through questioning during class discussion. The students should display accurate information about the story. The students will be evaluated on their understanding of the concept of comparing and contrasting the two stories through their ability to create an accurate venn diagram. One alternative strategy would be to have the class present a puppet show comparing and contrasting the two stories.

Half the class could act out one story and the other half could act out the other story. Then each side could discuss what was different and what was the same between the story they acted out and the story the other half of the class acted out.

Why is my guinea pig wet?

OK, when you house 2 pigs together male / female , male / male they create close bonds to each other, regardless of weather neutered or not. When 1 of your males is frisky he will sort of purr, shake his booty and spray urine over the object of his desire, Namely your other piggie. Or your amorous piggie has tried mating with the wet one and that is why he’s wet. Or it could have sat under the water bottle and been dripped on. I shouldn’t worry too much, just keep an eye on them to see if he’s laying under the water bottle.

McDonalds Is The Only Fast Food I Recommend….For Pigs ! –

McDonalds is not really good enough to feed to pigs because at the end of the day, humans will eat the pigs so it is not a safe thing to do. I would not even feed it to animals that are not in the human food chain because McDonalds is just not healthy. McDonalds is a worldwide exporter of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Hamburger chef Jamie Oliver has won his long-fought battle against one of the largest fast food chains in the world – McDonalds. After Oliver showed how McDonalds hamburgers are made, the franchise finally announced that it will change its recipe, and yet there was barely a peep about this in the mainstream, corporate media.

McDonalds is without any morals, money is ruler and king, the be all and the end all. In reply to all of the bad press this process has received from Oliver, the company Arcos Dorados, the franchise manager for McDonalds in Latin America, said such a procedure is not practiced in their region. McDonalds is lucky that someone does not force their top management to eat their own muck day in and day out for every meal. On the official website of McDonalds, the company claims that their meat is cheap because, while serving many people every day, they are able to buy from their suppliers at a lower price, and offer the best quality products. On the site, McDonalds has admitted that they have abandoned the beef filler from its burger patties.

McDonald’s use 19 ingredients in their french fries alone but that is after they have been grown with very strong pesticides, including probable carcinogens like chlorothalonil and pendimethalin, chlorpyrifos, PCNB and 2,4‐D. Pesticide drift is a major problem, negatively impacting public health and the environment killing livestock of the neighboring farmers. If you still prefer to eat at McDonald’s good luck to you.

Cattle feeding

Different cattle feeding production systems have separate advantages and disadvantages. Some corn-fed cattle are fattened in concentrated animal feeding operations known as feed lots. Because much of the land is better suited for cattle grazing than crop growing, it raises 40 percent of the cattle in Canada – about five million head. The other three western provinces are also well endowed with grazing land, so nearly 90 percent of Canadian beef cattle are raised in Alberta and the other western provinces. According to the United States Department of Agriculture there are 25-33 million head of feed cattle moving through custom and commercial cattle feedyards annually.

The feed cattle enterprise is an industry where millions of dollars move through these custom and private cattle feeding facilities every year. The business of feeding cattle is based on a commodity market mechanism. Cattle production worldwide is differentiated by animal genetics and feeding methods, resulting in differing quality types. Grain-fed cattle have more internal fat which results in a more tender meat than forage-fed cattle of a similar age. Another effect of feeding flax in cattle ration is an observed increase in the daily dry matter intake.

Although the direct beneficial effects of feeding omega-3 fatty acids remain uncertain, the preventative effect from feeding omega-3s to stressed cattle have shown great promise. In 1997, regulations prohibited the feeding of mammalian byproducts to ruminants such as cattle and goats. Campylobacter, a bacterium that can cause another foodborne illness resulting in nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle pain was found by Australian researchers to be carried by 58% of cattle raised in feed lots versus only 2% of pasture raised and finished cattle.

Romania reports African swine fever in farm pigs

BUCHAREST – Romania has reported an outbreak of African swine fever at a breeding farm for pigs in the southern county of Tulcea, the national food safety authority ANSVSA said on Monday. It said all pigs on the holding, or 44,580, would be culled. In June, Romania reported an outbreak of African swine fever among backyard pigs in the same county. African swine fever is a highly contagious disease that affects pigs and wild boar and has spread in Eastern Europe in recent years. Hungary, Russia, Poland, Ukraine and Romania are among the countries affected, alarming governments and pig farmers due the pace at which it has spread.

Healthy Coat for Horses

They are all produced and marketed by the same company, but as far as I can tell from a side by side comparison of the labels, they all basically share the same ingredients. The only major difference between the three is in the price. I have 2 Dachshunds, a Chihuahua, and a French Bulldog who all love this stuff and will lick it up by itself, although I mix it in with their food. I give them 1 teaspoon daily and they all have healthy, shiny, vibrant coats and no skin issues.

We Pigs News for 07-12-2018

Untitled1

Pigs are single-stomach animals and require two or three meals a day. Divide the food into two portions, feed the pigs half in the morning and the rest in the evening. It is important that small or weak pigs should be fed separately from the bigger ones, because these stronger pigs will eat all the food. If you have more than four adult pigs, then food should be divided into two containers, so that every animal can have a share. It is important that the floor of the pen should slope so that excess water can run off allowing the pen to stay dry.

If water does collect in the pen, it is important to dig a drainage furrow or ditch, leading out of the pen. Make sure that this mess is cleaned out at least twice a week, to lessen the risk of disease. Food and water containers must be cleaned thoroughly at least twice a week. Pigs are pregnant for about four months and can have as many as 10 young at a time. If big and small pigs share a pen or sty there will be fighting and the smaller or weaker ones will be bullied.

This will help keep the piglets warm and close to their mother. A sow with piglets must have clean water all the time and plenty of good, fresh food twice a day.

4H225/4H225: 4H Project Guide: Swine Nutrition

Swine rations, whether bought or mixed on the farm, usually contain a ground cereal grain, a protein source, salt, a calcium source, a phosphorus source, and a vitamin-trace mineral premix. Medications, such as antibiotics, may also be added to swine rations. About 50 to 85% of the ingredients in swine rations are cereal grains. They are the main way of providing energy in swine rations. Wheat is an excellent swine feed, with an energy value of about 98 to 100% of corn.

Some pork producers prefer to feed a mixture of wheat and corn or grain sorghum because they feel performance is better with a combination of grain sources. The basic ones are bred sow, nursing sow, starter rations, growing rations, and finishing rations. Some producers may use the same ration for bred sows and nursing sows. Table 1 gives example swine rations that may be mixed on the farm if a pork producer has a feed mill. Producers can often get a custom mix of a complete ration made at a feed mill.

Each base mix is then mixed with soybean meal and ground grain to produce the ration. See your 4-H leader, county extension agent, feed dealer, or veterinarian on choice of antibiotics to use in a ration.

Thought pigs are filthy? You should think again :: Kenya

Please fill me in on the best practices for a pig farmer. The abuse comes in many forms starting with housing; where farmers are tempted to keep many pigs in a small house. It is common to see many pigs in overcrowded stall on concrete floors without straw for bedding or rooting. As a sign of stress such pigs will fight and bite each other. For pigs kept indoors, at least there should be provisions for them to express normal behaviour.

This isn’t true, pigs are among few animals that don’t mix their food with waste. Given enough room, pigs will defecate at the furthest corner from where their feed is served. This false belief is a creation of farmers who keep pigs in squalid conditions and later blame it on the pigs. A good house should protect the pig from extreme weather conditions. Transportation causes a lot of stress to pigs; unlike other animals pigs don’t have sweat glands when transported on a hot day; this causes heat stress which can be fatal.

To minimise this stress, pigs should be preferably be transported on a slightly cooler day – early in the morning or late afternoon. Taking care of your pigs is the first obligation you should take up as a farmer.

American Anti-Vivisection Society

The USDA’s 2015 annual report on animal use at research facilities shows a continued decreasing trend in the number of animals used in U.S. laboratories. The report revealed that 904,147 animals covered by the Animal Welfare Act were held in labs last year, and that 767,622 were used in research, a drop of over eight percent from 2014.Hamsters are among the most used animals in labs, but their numbers decreased by almost 20 percent in 2015. Over half of the hamsters were used in experiments involving pain. There were increases in the number of other animals used in experiments.

While much of this data is welcome news, it’s important to note that only animals covered by the AWA are included in this report. Since rats, mice, birds, and fish do not fall under the umbrella of the AWA, labs are not required to count them, yet AAVS estimates that they comprise 95 percent of all animals in labs. Unlike the U.S., the European Union and Canada provide regulatory and legal protection for these animals. Please visit USDA’s website for more specific information about animal use.

We Pigs News for 07-06-2018

Introduction Voluntary Feed Intake and Stressors Voluntary feed intake of pigs determines nutrient intake levels and thus has a great impact on efficiency of pork production. The intensive selection programs for pig genotypes with better feed efficiency and carcass leanness has inadvertently selected pigs with reduced voluntary feed intake. Cold temperatures increase feed intake, while hot temperatures reduce feed intake when compared to temperatures in the comfort or thermal-neutral zone. A 37 per cent reduction in space allowance from 0.55 to 0.35 m2/pig for grower pigs reduced feed intake by 11 per cent, whereas 55 per cent reduction from 0.56 to 0.25 m2/pig reduced feed intake by eight per cent Hyun et al. Group size defined as number of pigs in a single pen alters the feed intake pattern of pigs, and these changes might alter overall daily feed intake.

Voluntary Feed Intake and Feed Feed composition in terms of nutrient content and nutrient balance is an important determinant of feed intake. Generally, pelleting of feed reduces feed intake but results in an improved growth performance due to improved nutrient digestibility of the feed. Voluntary Feed Intake and Ingredients For pigs, information is limited about variation in voluntary feed intake among batches of ingredients. Voluntary feed intake was a better predictor for performance than AME content of ingredient samples, indicating that factors other than AME content determine voluntary feed intake of broiler chicks. Finally, the AME content of wheat and barley, voluntary feed intake and subsequent performance among ingredient batches could not be predicted accurately by chemical characteristics, but were highly Selecting for increased leanness has reduced the amount that pigs eat predictable by NIRS.

The factors that determine voluntary feed intake of broiler chicks might play an important role in swine nutrition as well, and should perhaps be considered to enable predictable performance of grower-finisher pigs. The DE content of feed appears to determine feed intake of grower-finisher pigs within limits. The voluntary feed intake of pigs given feeds based on wheat bran, dried citrus pulp and grass meal, in relation to measurements of feed bulk.

Apple’s Chronic Health Issue (Guinea Pig)

Guinea Pig Course Certificate

The Guinea Pig course is suitable for anyone working and volunteering with guinea pigs in an animal shelter or veterinary surgery. This course is also of interest to guinea pig owners wanting to learn more about the care and welfare of guinea pigs. Module 1 examines the routine health checks required for Guinea Pigs. Learn about how to recognise and deal with parasites as well as common diseases and health disorders that affect Guinea Pigs. Learn about the nutritional requirements of Guinea Pigs and how to ensure an adequate diet that also incorporates aspects of environmental enrichment.

As well as guinea pigs they include mara, capybara and several species of cavy, such as the yellow-toothed cavy. Guinea Pigs are susceptible to a wide range of diseases and disorders. As well as health care and nutrition, correct environment and sufficient exercise and enrichment also play major role in keeping guinea pigs happy and healthy. These are much richer in energy than grass, meaning that domestic guinea pigs can be quite prone to excessive weight gain. Having access to grass in a large run can certainly be considered as environmental enrichment for guinea pigs, as it allows them to express their natural grazing behaviour.

This guinea pig course explores how to provide environmental enrichment, adequate nutrition, carry out health checks and how to recognise common health problems and deal with parasites. The course is of relevance to anyone working with or owning guinea pigs.

Guinea Pigs Harbor a Hidden Health Hazard

The bacteria, Chlamydia caviae, normally causes pink eye in guinea pigs. Three adults in the Netherlands wound up hospitalized for pneumonia after contact with guinea pigs resulted in their infection with C. caviae. Dr. Steven Gordon, chair of infectious disease at the Cleveland Clinic, said the cases are a reminder to practice good hygiene around pets.

The two people who landed in the ICU had guinea pigs as pets, and those pets had been sick with respiratory symptoms. The man had two guinea pigs, while one of the women had 25, researchers said. The other woman worked in a veterinary clinic, where she cared for guinea pigs suffering from pink eye and nasal inflammation. Doctors detected Chlamydia bacteria in samples drawn from the patients and figured it was Chlamydia psittaci, a bacteria carried by birds that’s known to cause a form of pneumonia called psittacosis, Ramakers said. The analysis also matched the DNA of C.

caviae in one of the patients’ guinea pigs to the bacteria that had infected its owner. Not all guinea pigs carry C. caviae, but many likely do, Ramakers said. An earlier study found the bacteria’s DNA in 59 out of 123 guinea pigs with eye disease. Don’t give away your favorite pet guinea pig just yet, though.

People who want to protect themselves should get their guinea pigs treated by a vet if their pet appears ill, especially if it is suffering from pink eye or respiratory illness, Gordon said.

Veterinarian in ALLENTOWN, PA

Guinea Pig Health and Wellness – Guinea Pigs are large rodents weighing about two pounds with a lifespan of five to seven years. Guinea pigs are easy to handle, docile creatures sturdy enough for even small children to handle. Once you have hand-tamed your guinea pig, you should let him run around in a small room or enclosed area to get some additional exercise every day. You will need to carefully check the room for any openings from which the guinea pig can escape, get lost or possibly end up hurt. Guinea pigs are very conscientious about grooming themselves, but brushing them on a regular basis will help keep their coat clean and remove any loose hairs.

Long-haired guinea pigs should be brushed daily in order to prevent tangles and knots from forming. Housing – Guinea pigs are social animals preferring to live in small groups. Plan to provide at least four square feet of cage space per guinea pig. The ASPCA recommends offering small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables to your guinea pigs every day. While guinea pig pellets and certain fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, the best way of ensuring your pet has enough vitamin C to keep him healthy is to give him 50 mg.

Veterinary Care – Most guinea pig health disorders can be prevented with appropriate housing, nutrition and daily vitamin C administration. Guinea pigs are much easier to treat in the early stages of a problem.

Guinea pig care – Canterbury Vet Clinic

Children should always be supervised when playing with a guinea pig. When children hold a guinea pig they should be sitting on the ground with the guinea pig in their lap this way the guinea pig does not have very far to fall if it struggles and the child lets go. If a guinea pig is dropped from any height it may suffer serious injuries such as broken legs or internal damage. In recent years it has been a trend for guinea pig dry foods to contain molasses. These bacteria produce toxins that can result in death of the guinea pig.

Bran is especially good for the older guinea pig that is loosing weight. Greens are especially important for guinea pigs as they supply them with Vitamin C. Guinea pigs must have a dietary source of Vitamin C or they will become sick and die of Vitamin C deficiency. Guinea pigs obtain most of their water through leafy greens so you may notice that your guinea pig does not drink very much. The guinea pig scratches itself and large scabs form.

The broken skin can become infected with bacteria and make the guinea pig very sick. If your guinea pig is itchy then it should bought into the clinic for an examination and treatment. If your guinea pig is showing these symptoms it should be bought into the clinic for examination.
