Egypt orders slaughter of all pigs over swine flu

Egypt began slaughtering the roughly 300,000 pigs in the country Wednesday as a precaution against swine flu even though no cases have been reported here, infuriating farmers who resisted the move and demanded compensation. Egypt responded similarly in recent years to an outbreak of bird flu, which is endemic to the country and has killed two dozen people. At one large pig farming center just north of Cairo, farmers refused to cooperate with Health Ministry workers who came to slaughter the animals and the workers left without carrying out the government order. Most in the Muslim world consider pigs unclean animals and do not eat pork because of religious restrictions. In other parts of the Muslim world, pigs are often raised by religious minorities who can eat pork.

In Jordan, the government decided Wednesday to shut down the country’s five pig farms, involving 800 animals, for violating public health safety regulations. Half the pigs will be killed and the rest will be relocated to areas away from the population, officials said. In Egypt, pigs are raised and consumed mainly by the Christian minority, which some estimates put at 10 percent of the population. Health Ministry spokesman Abdel-Rahman Shaheen estimated there are between 300,000-350,000 pigs in Egypt. Hard hit by bird flu Egypt was among the countries hardest hit by bird flu.

In the northern suburbs of Cairo Wednesday, health authorities killed 250 pigs and buried them. Angry farmers demanded compensation and provincial governors paid them around 1,000 Egyptian pounds per head. The farmers asked for an official government decision to set a price for each pig slaughtered.

China to kill 1,332 pigs over swine fever outbreak

Authorities in China’s Zhejiang province said it will cull 1,332 hogs after an African swine fever outbreak was reported in the city of Yueqing, the city government said in a post on its official Weibo account on Thursday. Authorities have sealed off an area within 3 km from the pig farming community where the deadly disease was found, according to the statement. The local government has also banned the movement of animals that can be easily infected inside and outside the affected area, and closed some live hog trading markets and slaughterhouses following the outbreak, the statement said. China is home to the world’s largest pig herd and the case in Yueqing, a city under the jurisdiction of the nearby city of Wenzhou, was the first confirmed outbreak in the eastern province of Zhejiang and the country’s fourth in a month. The latest cull will bring the total number of pigs deliberately killed to prevent African swine fever to over 25,000 in an effort to control the spread of the highly contagious disease, which was first reported in the city of Shenyang in the northeastern province of Liaoning just three weeks ago.

Two other cases have been reported in Henan in central China and Jiangsu province to the north of Zhejiang. The virus which causes African swine fever is hardy and has been shown to remain infectious for at least 30 days in uninhabited pig pens, over four months in pork products, including salted dried hams, and indefinitely in frozen pig carcasses, it said.

DC Used to Feed Its Trash to Pigs. Why’d We Stop?

The Residence Act of 1790 moved the seat of US government from Philadelphia to what would become DC. With that small detail taken care of, the city we know today would grow around the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. The real challenge for a new city in the 19th century was how to deal with all the garbage. They often decided to go out of sight and out of mind, taking trash to pig farms outside city limits. By 1943, the public opinion of the practice had soured.

A report from the National Institutes of Health described how feeding uncooked garbage to swine was a major cause of human trichinosis, which at the time was more common in the US than anywhere else in the world-mostly thanks to parasite-ridden pigs. The NIH notes that if table scraps were thoroughly cooked and the resulting pork was prepared correctly, the disease transmission would drop dramatically, and it would again be a profitable, useful way to get rid of garbage. It turns out the NIH was right: if properly boiled for 30 minutes before feeding, the USDA allows pigs to eat garbage, and the guidelines were last updated in 2009. It’s hard to make a food pyramid out of table scraps. We throw away more and more inedible, inorganic wastes, so it’s hard to feed pigs a balanced diet on trash alone.

Plus, studies and anecdotal evidence have found that it creates lower-quality meat that spoils sooner. If you take care of the hygiene issues, feeding pigs trash is still a viable option-they don’t mind.

Avian Flu Diary: California: San Luis Obispo Public Health Investigating Suspected Swine Variant Flu Cases

Like we saw in Michigan last week, and in Indiana in early July, pigs carrying swine flu are suspected of infecting fairgoers at the California Mid-State fair. The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department is investigating several cases of influenza in the community to determine whether they are linked to a case of influenza in a pig at the California Mid-State Fair. At this time, the Public Health Department does not have any laboratory confirmation that the cases are linked to pigs. A number of cases of pigs transmitting influenza to humans at agricultural fairs have occurred in other states in recent years. If you seek medical attention for the flu and have had extended contact with pigs, tell your health care provider about that contact.

Swine flu outbreaks linked to county fairs and agricultural exhibits present a particularly sticky problem for both fair organizers, and public health officials. As we saw a year ago in EID Journal: Transmission Of Swine H3N2 To Humans At Agricultural Exhibits – Michigan & Ohio 2016, these venues are particularly good at disseminating novel flu viruses to the public. Variant influenza infections in humans continue to occur through contact with exhibition swine; often, the cases are in swine exhibitors with close and prolonged swine exposure. Of note, while widespread illness in pigs was only rarely reported, surveillance revealed an average prevalence of influenza A in fair pigs of 77.5%. This study cautions that this suggests `that subclinical influenza A infections in pigs remain a threat to public health.

This from the CDC. CDC Recommendations For People At High Risk:If you are at high risk of serious flu complications and are going to a fair where pigs will be present, avoid pigs and swine barns at the fair. Take protective measures if you must come in contact with pigs that are known or suspected to be sick. To further reduce the risk of infection, minimize contact with pigs in the pig barn and arenas.

China to launch emergency inspections on farms after swine …

BEIJING, Aug 6 – China’s Liaoning province will increase inspections at pig farms and markets and strengthen the monitoring of hog transportation, after the nation’s first African swine fever case was reported there, local media Liaoning Daily reported on Monday. The African swine fever outbreak poses a major threat to the hog farming industry in the province and the whole country, and must be eradicated thoroughly, an official from Liaoning Provincial Bureau of Animal Health and Production said, according to Liaoning Daily. The provincial government has asked local authorities to launch emergency inspections at all pig farms, hog markets, slaughterhouses and harmless treatment sites in the province, and report any cases of pig deaths due to unknown reasons, slaughtered pigs found with splenomegaly or splenic hemorrhage, and immune failure among pigs after receiving swine fever vaccines, the paper reported, citing the animal health bureau. Liaoning also ordered the temporary closure of all live hog markets and slaughterhouses in Shenbei district, where the outbreak was discovered, the paper reported. China culled some 913 hogs near Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning, and banned transportation of hogs from the affected areas, following the outbreak.

Hogs and products in Shenyang can only be distributed within the city, while those transported from outside must go through strict quarantine, the animal health bureau official said. The case in Liaoning, the first in East Asia, has stoked concern about its spread in China, which has the world’s largest pig herd, and possibly to neighbouring countries in Asia. Japan has suspended imports of heat-treated Chinese pork and tightened quarantine operations at airport and seaports, following the outbreak. Local authorities in Liaoning must put affected pigs under strict quarantine and monitoring once suspected cases were discovered. The movement of susceptible animals, and their products must also be restricted, the report said.

High fat diets and pathology in the guinea pig. Atherosclerosis or liver damage?

Animal models have been widely used to investigate the relationship between diet and atherosclerosis and also to study disease etiology and possible interventions. Few published studies actually reported observations of characteristic atherosclerotic lesions and even fewer of advanced lesions. Studies, by our group, of guinea pigs fed on a high-fat diet revealed similar observations, with indications primarily of fatty streaks but little evidence of atherosclerotic plaques. This review discusses the feasibility of the guinea pig as a model for dietary-induced atherosclerosis. As it stands, current evidence raises doubt as to whether guinea pigs could serve as a realistic model for atherosclerosis.

Our own data and the literature suggest that they could be useful models for studying lipoprotein metabolism, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and dietary interventions which may help regulate these conditions. Substance High fat diets and pathology in the guinea pig.

Romania reports 500 outbreaks of African swine fever in pigs

BUCHAREST, Romania – Romanian authorities have reported more than 500 separate outbreaks of African swine fever in pigs, mainly in the Danube Delta and near the Hungarian border. In the eastern county of Tulcea, the region worst hit by the disease, an official told The Associated Press on Monday that a state of emergency had been proclaimed. Mihai Pagal, a spokesman for the Tulcea prefect’s office, said 48,000 pigs had been culled since June after they came down with the disease. He said two large commercial farms had been badly hit, as well as many smaller farms. Tulcea alone has seen 471 outbreaks of swine fever, according to Romanian veterinary authorities.

They said nationwide, 500 farmers will receive compensation for dead livestock. The World Organization for Animal Health says African swine fever doesn’t affect humans.

Culling Pigs in Flu Fight, Egypt Angers Herders and Dismays U.N.

As a result, Egyptian pig farmers are overwhelmingly Christian. Although some of the country’s Christians are middle class or wealthy, the Christian farmers are generally poor. On Thursday, several urban pig farmers in Cairo said they see the government’s decision as just another expression of Egyptian Muslims’ resentment against Christians. The Egyptian government denied the incidents had sectarian overtones, saying they were each part of other disputes, including a fight over land. Barsoum Girgis, a 26-year-old pig farmer, lives in a poor neighborhood, Manshiet Nasser, built along the Mukatam cliffs on the eastern end of the city where most of the ramshackle, red-brick buildings were built illegally.

Mr. Girgis makes his living through a combination of raising pigs and collecting garbage – two professions that are often tied together in a city where garbage collection can be an informal affair and where poor farmers rely on food scraps to feed their livestock. When he gets back to Manshiet Nasser, at around 9 a.m., he sorts the trash, putting aside what can be sold at the city’s booming scrap markets and what he can use as pig feed. Many of Cairo’s pig farmers live in similar conditions, sharing their small spaces in the teeming city with their animals. It remains unclear if the government will compensate the farmers for their losses.

The Health Ministry originally said the farmers would be paid, but after many in Parliament disagreed, the ministry appeared to back down. Anxious over the reports of swine flu agree, with the government’s move. Many pig farmers say they do a valuable service for the rest of Cairo that will be recognized only if they stop picking up the trash.

Swine Challenges & EW Nutrition Solutions

Health and performance in pigs are closely connected to their gastro-intestinal tract. Immediately after birth is especially challenging for piglets, which are still physiologically immature and possess virtually no immune protection against the pathogens present in the new environment. The time around weaning will greatly influence the lifetime performance of the piglets. The negative impact comes from several stress factors combined with a fragile enzymatic system, unstable intestinal microflora, and an under-developed immune system. Intestinal disorders are likely to occur during both phases.

To fight the pathogens causing diarrhoea, antibiotics are commonly used. These drugs are harmful to the gut microbiota as they do not differentiate between the good and the bad microbiota. This can create an imbalance in the intestinal microflora aggravating overall piglet performance. Antibiotics are also still commonly used during the later phases like the fattening period. An effective feed formulation – together with good production management – supports the immunity and the gut health of piglets, being essential to decrease pathogenic pressure and prevent outbreaks of diseases.

EW Nutrition’s Antibiotic Reduction Program was designed to compensate for immunity gaps and to increase feed intake to stabilize the gut flora and maximize a piglet’s welfare and productivity.

Pigs are single-stomach animals and require two or three meals a day. Divide the food into two portions, feed the pigs half in the morning and the rest in the evening. It is important that small or weak pigs should be fed separately from the bigger ones, because these stronger pigs will eat all the food. If you have more than four adult pigs, then food should be divided into two containers, so that every animal can have a share. It is important that the floor of the pen should slope so that excess water can run off allowing the pen to stay dry.

If water does collect in the pen, it is important to dig a drainage furrow or ditch, leading out of the pen. Make sure that this mess is cleaned out at least twice a week, to lessen the risk of disease. Food and water containers must be cleaned thoroughly at least twice a week. Pigs are pregnant for about four months and can have as many as 10 young at a time. If big and small pigs share a pen or sty there will be fighting and the smaller or weaker ones will be bullied.

This will help keep the piglets warm and close to their mother. A sow with piglets must have clean water all the time and plenty of good, fresh food twice a day.

4H225/4H225: 4H Project Guide: Swine Nutrition

Swine rations, whether bought or mixed on the farm, usually contain a ground cereal grain, a protein source, salt, a calcium source, a phosphorus source, and a vitamin-trace mineral premix. Medications, such as antibiotics, may also be added to swine rations. About 50 to 85% of the ingredients in swine rations are cereal grains. They are the main way of providing energy in swine rations. Wheat is an excellent swine feed, with an energy value of about 98 to 100% of corn.

Some pork producers prefer to feed a mixture of wheat and corn or grain sorghum because they feel performance is better with a combination of grain sources. The basic ones are bred sow, nursing sow, starter rations, growing rations, and finishing rations. Some producers may use the same ration for bred sows and nursing sows. Table 1 gives example swine rations that may be mixed on the farm if a pork producer has a feed mill. Producers can often get a custom mix of a complete ration made at a feed mill.

Each base mix is then mixed with soybean meal and ground grain to produce the ration. See your 4-H leader, county extension agent, feed dealer, or veterinarian on choice of antibiotics to use in a ration.

Thought pigs are filthy? You should think again :: Kenya

Please fill me in on the best practices for a pig farmer. The abuse comes in many forms starting with housing; where farmers are tempted to keep many pigs in a small house. It is common to see many pigs in overcrowded stall on concrete floors without straw for bedding or rooting. As a sign of stress such pigs will fight and bite each other. For pigs kept indoors, at least there should be provisions for them to express normal behaviour.

This isn’t true, pigs are among few animals that don’t mix their food with waste. Given enough room, pigs will defecate at the furthest corner from where their feed is served. This false belief is a creation of farmers who keep pigs in squalid conditions and later blame it on the pigs. A good house should protect the pig from extreme weather conditions. Transportation causes a lot of stress to pigs; unlike other animals pigs don’t have sweat glands when transported on a hot day; this causes heat stress which can be fatal.

To minimise this stress, pigs should be preferably be transported on a slightly cooler day – early in the morning or late afternoon. Taking care of your pigs is the first obligation you should take up as a farmer.

American Anti-Vivisection Society

The USDA’s 2015 annual report on animal use at research facilities shows a continued decreasing trend in the number of animals used in U.S. laboratories. The report revealed that 904,147 animals covered by the Animal Welfare Act were held in labs last year, and that 767,622 were used in research, a drop of over eight percent from 2014.Hamsters are among the most used animals in labs, but their numbers decreased by almost 20 percent in 2015. Over half of the hamsters were used in experiments involving pain. There were increases in the number of other animals used in experiments.

While much of this data is welcome news, it’s important to note that only animals covered by the AWA are included in this report. Since rats, mice, birds, and fish do not fall under the umbrella of the AWA, labs are not required to count them, yet AAVS estimates that they comprise 95 percent of all animals in labs. Unlike the U.S., the European Union and Canada provide regulatory and legal protection for these animals. Please visit USDA’s website for more specific information about animal use.

Guinea pig health: Scurvy

Drug-Test Human Guinea Pigs: Men’s Health.com

Others who are healthy just participate in the occasional study for some extra cash. In a Johns Hopkins survey of research volunteers published last spring in Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 10 percent of the sampled group admitted to participating in more than one study at a time – most likely without the knowledge of the researchers. Nancy Kass, Sc.D., the lead author of the Johns Hopkins study, agrees. As a result, there’s little chance of catching volunteers who skirt the rules, and that includes people who keep quiet about past or current physical conditions that have the potential to skew study results. While confidentiality rules give guinea pigs the cover they need to straddle multiple studies, those guinea pigs also benefit from a testing system that increasingly overlooks-and sometimes even encourages – abuse.

Struggling immigrants, the chronically unemployed, cash-strapped college students – anyone who’s financially needy is fodder for a CRO-run study and more likely to be a professional guinea pig. Within a year, he’d moved to Austin – lab rats consider it the mecca for clinical trials in the United States – and has been supporting himself with research studies ever since. Doubling up on studies or skirting the guidelines is tough for them, because the institutions where they’re tested keep good records and share detailed information about study participants. The government is not much better at monitoring its own studies. Still, in theory, any problems missed by the OHRP or the FDA would be caught by an institutional review board, or IRB.

Before any clinical trial can proceed, an IRB evaluates the study plan to make sure the testing is ethical and that participants’ rights are protected. Formation of these oversight committees was mandated in 1974 after details came to light about the Tuskegee Institute study that left black men untreated for syphilis for four decades. Today many IRBs are run for profit, creating an incentive to rule favorably on studies so that CROs won’t take their business elsewhere.

Adult Guinea Pig Food

Five days ago I started him on your Recovery food and pellets, I have hope he will get better. I recently switched my two female guinea pigs over to sherwood pellets. After learning about Sherwood Pellets from another Pig owner. My girls eat less of the pellets than they did of the previous brand, they do like the pellets, and the switch over has been pretty easy. Simple wholesome ingredients fortified with the essential Vitamin C that guinea pigs need in their diet, the pellets are dark green and smells wonderfully FRESH!

Just looking at the pellets alone is a sell – most pellets look tan or brown and are actually pretty big. I decided to switch the brand of emergency food and pellets to Sherwood and start using Sherwood cranberry tabs to hopefully avoid another stone because I knew he would not survive another operation. It’s been a couple weeks now that I’ve started mixing the Sherwood pellets with my guinea pig’s usual pellets and my guinea pig still won’t eat the Sherwood pellets…she has tried it but will still always go for her usual pellets. The Sherwood pellets stay in her food bowl and lose their shape…looks like it expands a bit and becomes crummy looking. Since we bought the Sherwood pellets, our Guinea Pigs won’t touch any other pellets.

With such great results, I could not wait to get my hands on a bag of Sherwood Forest Adult Guinea Pig Food. While most hesitate to feed a pellet with Alfalfa to a sludge-prone pig, I already knew that it wasn’t the calcium or Alfalfa causing her problems; It was all the junk, unbalanced formulas, and artificial vitamins.

Farmers can raise guinea pigs for health, wealth

Today, guinea pig farming business is gaining popularity throughout the world. Farmers should try raising guinea pigs for health and wealth as the demand is becoming huge both at the local and the export market. Guinea pig, small livestock with big potential, can be raised to improve the nutrition and livelihoods of farmers by providing food and additional income. Guinea pig farming business is a more profitable source of food and income than many traditional stock animals as they require much less room than traditional livestock and they reproduce extremely quickly. Guinea pig meat is white, lean, tasty and healthy for consumption, in addition to being wholesome and delicious.

In the farming families, children benefit most from the increased availability of fresh and nutritious meat from home-produced guinea pigs. Daily Sun learnt that guinea pig is a specie of rodents. They are not pigs nor do they come from Guinea or Guinea-Bissau. Guinea pigs are cavy type rodents, they are warm blooded mammals. Like most cavies, guinea pig has short legs, a short neck, a big head and no tail.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Jovana Integrated Farms, Prince Arinze Onebunne, said the demand for quality guinea pig meat has been increasing yearly because of the growing awareness of their nutritional benefits, especially among health-conscious people. He added that the production of guinea pigs gives small farmers a chance to increase their income and health, and offers an alternative means of livelihood to urban and rural farmers.

Pigs Health, Diseases & Symptoms

Pigs often suffer from internal parasites and skin diseases. Contemporary deworm medication is very safe for pigs and for humans. We must also regularly check for the wellbeing of our pigs. We should get suspicious of our pig’s health if we observe one of the followings: The pig is not interested in eating or drinking water for a couple of hours. The pig separates from the herd and keeps itself constantly isolated.

The pig does not move and rather prefers to sleep most of the time. For farmers that have housed different animals in their farms, erysipelas can be a major problem. Salmonellosis is also a major problem for pig farmers, because if it goes unnoticed and the infected pigs are finally slaughtered, consumers are in great danger of food poisoning. Most common symptoms of salmonellosis are again depression, diarrhea, loss of appetite and less often the tails of the pig turn blue. Coccidiosis, mastitis, swine dysentery and gastric ulcers are also common diseases.

You can enrich this article by leaving a comment or photo of your pig’s symptoms disease. Once approved, it will be added to Wikifarmer.com and it will influence positively thousands of new and experienced farmers across the world.

Chinchilla, rabbit, guinea pig urine discoloration-red, orange, white

Usually chinchilla, rabbit, guinea pig urine is pale yellow or yellow. Most common cause of cloudy urine is calciuria, see white urine for more info. When you notice reddish urine for the first time, it’s logical to assume that there is blood in the urine. Often blood in the urine is not visible to the naked eye and if you do not see any other symptoms, including loss of appetite, straining, frequent urination, weakness, it can be just the excretion of plant pigments or other reasons listed below. Orange/red urine is produced when porphyrins are excreted in the urine.

Normal urine may appear darker if chinchilla, rabbit, guinea pig, degu or other herbivores is dehydrated. Excessive amount of iron or B vitamins passed in the urine can cause an orange, reddish – brown discoloration of the urine. Herbivores’ urine is usually yeallow if they are on a natural diet. Some antibiotics may increase the levels of pigments in the urine. When urine dries, you may see white, chalky residue.

Generally, some white urine residue is not a problem; it usually means that excess calcium is being excreted. If you notice that urine is white, then calcium intake should be significantly reduced.

Enhances herbivores’ immune system Especially beneficial for animals who suffer from eye infections, URI, and other health problems. Promotes better circulation to help immune cells move more freely. Immune system ability to set barriers and recognize millions of pathogens makes all the difference between a sick and a healthy pet. Mental stress and isolation suppresses the immune system. Because of the stress the connection between nervous, hormonal and immune system breaks.

Immune system is a complex mix of cells and molecules that defend the body against bacteria, microbes, parasites and the grows of tumor cells. Disease causing microbes are constantly trying to invent new ways to outwit the immune system. They need a chance to reproduce inside or outside of the cells, before components of the immune system detect and kill them. If they manage to snick in, immune system can use 2 types of defense: innate and adaptive. Actually, almost every organ tries to help the immune system.

Lung cells produce an antiseptic layer; the liver manufactures immune proteins. If innate immune system needs help, it makes changes of the phagocyte surface to activate adaptive immune system.

In white skin-colored pigs the skin may become reddish. There are more than 30 types affecting the intestines of pigs. Pork measles is caused by tapeworms which live in the muscles of pigs. Nowadays sarcoptic mange in pigs has been reported in all major swine producing countries and is prevalent in Brazilian swine herds. Wash all pigs at the beginning of fattening if mange is already a problem.

The pigs show annoyance and try to find a shabby place. The deworming schedule should include prebreeding for all breeding stock and prefarrowing for gilts and sows, prevention of Strongyloides and roundworms in baby pigs, and one or more dewormings in weanling and growing pigs. Keep pig pens clean, dry and free of sharp objects, clip milk teeth of baby pigs. Transmissible gastroenteritis is a common viral disease of the small intestine that causes vomiting and profuse diarrhea in pigs of all ages. In chronic cases, pigs have greyish or brownish faeces, rough hair coat and low growth rate.

Avoid fighting among pigs by mixing pigs from different pens. Foot-and-mouth disease is an acute, highly contagious, viral of animals with hooves, such as cattle, water buffalo, goats and pigs.

How To Choose a Healthy Guinea Pig!

guinea pigs weight at birth

Among the many misconceptions I run in to, one of the most frustrating is the assumption that an adult guinea pig will remain the approximate size of a hamster. For the sake of the animals, let’s keep in mind that guinea pigs aren’t especially similar to hamsters, gerbils, or any other small rodent friend. Let’s say you have recently acquired, or plan to acquire, a new baby guinea pig. Your average baby guinea pig will weight somewhere in the range of 95-105 grams at birth. Guinea pigs are best weaned when their weight has tripled, usually within three to five weeks of delivery.

The pups are quick to learn to take care of themselves, but weaning guinea pigs early is not encouraged. Much of their energy at this point in time is dedicated to weight gain Your junior cavy is likely a bit pudgy, and may look a bit like a cartoonish version of an adult guinea pig. This is usually the age where most guinea pigs enter the pet market. An intermediate guinea pigs weighs between 23 and 32 ounces, and is about four to six months old. The fat it stored up as a junior will go to building the cavy’s adult frame, and as such, your guinea pig will grow longer, rather than wider, as an intermediate.

Guinea pigs begin filling out and reaching their adult weight somewhere between six and eight months of age. When finished growing, it’s important to note that an adult guinea pig can weight as much as three pounds or more – ergo, by the time they’re six months old, guinea pigs are far too large for smaller rodent enclosures designed for hamsters or mice.

Guinea Pig Neutering, How to Neuter your Guinea Pigs

The only valid, non-medical reason to neuter your male guinea pig is because you have a female you want him to room with. Cat & Dog vs. Exotic VetsPlease do not assume that any vet can do a guinea pig neuter. Most cat and dog vets should NOT do a guinea pig neuter. You need to find a vet who has done quite a few guinea pig neuters AND has a high success rate doing them.

When you are looking at comparing the cost of a neuter for your guinea pig, please be very careful about choosing a shelter to do this for you. Almost every vet will insist that you bring the guinea pig in for a first-time health check visit, and rightly so. Most breeders do NOT neuter their guinea pigs! Vets who work with breeders and 4-H clubs often tend to approach guinea pigs as stock animals rather than as beloved companions. Call some of the non-exotic vets and ask them who they think the top 3 guinea pig vets are in the area.

Keep in mind that a vet who advertises as a small animal or exotic vet isn’t necessarily an expert or even competent with guinea pigs. Healthy!Your guinea pig should have already been seen by the vet prior to his castration appointment. If you have to take the guinea pig back to the vet to have stitches or staples removed, continue the post-op care and monitoring until you are certain there is no possible infection at the suture site. The downside risk of prescribing antibiotics after a neutering procedure on a guinea pig is insignificant compared to the much higher risk of infection after a cavy neuter.
