L.A. Guinea Pig Rescue Pit Crew

Inside Lab100, Mount Sinai’s health clinic of the future

10 minute Read. I’m walking through Mount Sinai Health System’s library on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, surrounded by medical students studying and furiously clacking on their keyboards. The corner of a medical school library is a rather unlikely place to put the clinic of the future, but for now, it’s the staging area for Lab100-an experimental clinic that provides patients with one of the most complete health assessments currently available, from cognition and balance to body composition and dexterity. Lab100’s creators have big ambitions: to redesign health care by focusing on healthy people. This is where Lab100 is focusing-connecting everyday behaviors with conventional medicine, shifting health care’s emphasis on treating disease toward preventing disease in the first place.

The first step of the assessment was to pose for a photo that would be attached to the rest of the health data the team would collect on me that morning. The entire experience was unlike any interaction with a doctor I’d ever had-and I’d never seen the current state of my health laid out in such a visual, easy-to-understand manner. Bringing a small scale prototype like Lab100 to a larger audience is a daunting task, especially within the existing health care system. To find out, Dudley is working to prepare a pilot study at Mount Sinai, which, like other companies that insure their employees, has a great incentive to reduce its overall health insurance costs. The hospital system already encourages employees to complete a standard health and wellness test in exchange for reduced insurance premiums.

If Dudley gets his way, a sample of 1,000 people at Mount Sinai will do this standard test, and another 1,000 will do Lab100. Because doctors are trained to perform a test only if they have a suspicion that there’s something wrong, most electronic health records are almost completely empty-which makes it hard for technologists to train machine learning algorithms and make health care more predictive. It’s a service model that’s virtually nonexistent elsewhere in the health care system-one that’s based on UX, data, visualizations, storytelling, and most crucially, user-centered design and consent.

Guinea Pig Care

Native to grasslands, forests, swamps, and mountains of South America. Average litter size: 3 to 4 offspring; born fully furred with eyes open. Unable to naturally produce vitamin C in their bodies and must receive it through diet or supplements. Easily stressed: when frightened, will run around at high speed. Large quantity of grass hay, such as timothy, brome, and Bermuda grass.

Fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C. Pelleted guinea pig diet containing vitamin C, approximately 1/8 cup per day Alfalfa-based pellets for reproducing sows and juveniles up to 6 months of age. No diet mixes containing dried fruit, vegetables, grain, or seeds. Well-ventilated cage made of plastic, metal, or wire, with a solid cage floor to prevent injuries to the legs and feet Place the cage in a quiet location, away from direct sunlight, and maintain a temperature of 65°F to 75°F. To prevent heat stress, avoid high humidity and temperatures above 80°F.

Thick layer of fiber bedding such as aspen shavings or recycled newspaper litter. Avoid cedar or pine shavings, which can irritate the respiratory tract. Complete physical examination every 6 to 12 months Consult a veterinarian with experience treating exotic companion mammals if you have any questions or concerns about your guinea pig’s health. Regular toenail trimming, if necessary, and combing/brushing of longhaired breeds. Hair loss or itching due to mites, lice, fungal infections, or hormonal problems.

Vet Tips Caring for your Guinea Pig

Despite their common name, these animals are not pigs, nor do they come from Guinea. Guinea pigs are large rodents, weighing between 700 and 1200g, and measuring between 20 and 25 cm in length. According to the 2006 Guinness Book of Records the longest living guinea pig survived 14 years, 10.5 months. The guinea pig is able to breed all year-round, with birth peaks usually coming in the spring; as many as five litters can be produced per year. Do NOT fast your Guinea Pig before you bring her to the hospital.

Your Guinea Pig will get an intramuscular sedation that will make her fall asleep in 5 to 10 minutes. The sutures are hidden underneath the skin so your Guinea Pig won’t be able to pull them out. Do NOT fast your Guinea Pig before you bring him to the hospital. Your Guinea Pig will get an intramuscular sedation that will make him fall asleep in 5 to 10 minutes. Most grass-eating mammals are quite large and have a long digestive tract; while guinea pigs have much longer colons than most rodents, they must also supplement their diet by coprophagy, the eating of their own faces.

The cecotropes are eaten directly from the anus, unless the guinea pig is pregnant or obese. The Kitten or Puppy advantage is the correct size for a fully grown Guinea Pig and is safe to use.

Is Armour Thyroid Medication GMO Free and Safe Since It’s From Pigs? « Thyroid U

Armour Thyroid, is the natural desiccated thyroid product derived from the thyroid glands of pigs manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals. Only animals that are approved to go into the meat supply end up in the Armour product. That would indicate that they are most likely fed GMO grains, corn, etc. Otherwise there would be a big push to say they are organically fed. If you are terribly concerned about this, you can switch to a man-made synthetic THR medication which work well for most people.

European Commission

Increasing the living space available for sows and gilts. Introducing higher level of training and competence on welfare issues for personnel. Setting requirements for light and maximum noise levels. Providing permanent access to fresh water and to materials for rooting and playing. In particular with effect from 1st January 2013, pregnant sows must be kept in groups instead of individual stalls during part of their pregnancy – a major improvement for the welfare of sows in the EU.

Indeed apart from some exceptions all pigs are to be raised in groups and must be provided with permanent access to drinking water and food of appropriate quality at regular intervals. They must also have permanent access to a sufficient quantity of enrichment materials that does not compromise their health and enables them to carry out proper investigation and manipulation activities and fulfil their behavioural needs. Please refer to the EFSA page for their scientific opinions on the welfare aspects of pig farming. Routine tail docking is forbidden, the Commission has developed several activities to prevent routine tail docking. Surgical castration, practiced for centuries to remove an unpleasant odour from pork known as ‘boar taint’ and prevent undesirable sexual and aggressive behaviour in pigs, has become a significant animal welfare concern in recent years.

Research has proven that this surgical procedure inflicts pain, even on very young pigs.

Signs of a guinea pig dying

Well i knew my guinea pig was’nt ok because is had sunken eyes and very thin -a common thing was that her teeth were too long for a long time and was’nt drinking or eating- i gave her norer stiks and things like that but she had’nt been to the vets before so she didnt get cheked up and by just not being normal. Ellie x When my guinea pig died last night, She was breathing really hard and was lying on her left side. She was always trying to snuggle up to the other guinea pig. Once I had held one last time, I put her back into her cage next to lucky. Anna When my Guinea pig was dieing she did not move at all except for a little twitching every once and a wile.

She would lay on her left side and when I held her she would not want to snuggle like she always does she just sat there. When I tried to feed her she would not eat or drink her eyes were wide open and she would not blink and she would pee a lot. When your pet is on the last chapter of their life, there are some tell-tale signs that may help you deal with the pain of loosing them. Some obvious changes with their eatting and drinking habbits will start to show, and they may start to get bald patches and be slugish when walking around their cage. Theirs not much you can do for them except let them know they were a great pet, and keep encouraging them to eat.

You know when your guinea pig is dieing when it is not eating or walking slowly and just laying down a lot.

Pigs in a Blanket Recipe

If you, or anyone in your family, has the internal fortitude to turn up a nose at a platter of darling little hot dogs snuggled into their flaky little dough pashminas, then you are more evolved than anyone in my family. If like most every other mortal on this earth, your heart beats a little faster when you get a glimpse of these happy little morsels, and you lose your ability to concentrate onoh, look, there’s a butterfly. Men, in particular, get a euphoric glazed look when pigs in a blanket make an appearance. Making pigs in a blanket is not rocket science, nor innovative cuisine, nor health food. If you want to gild the lily a bit, shove a few slivers of cheese into a slit made down the middle of each hot dog before rolling them up in the puff pastry.

Lightly flour the work surface and place the thawed puff pastry on the flour. Using a rolling pin, roll each piece of pastry until it is a little thinner, trying to maintain the squared off lines of the rectangle. Cut each piece of puff pastry into strips about 1 inch by 3 inches. Place a wee hot dog or sausage on the narrow end of 1 puff pastry strip. Place the pig in a blanket on the prepared baking sheet, seam-side down.

Repeat with the remaining hot dogs and puff pastry strips, arranging the pigs in blankets on the baking sheet at least 1 inch apart. Bake the pigs in blankets until they’re puffed and golden brown, about 20 minutes.

Basic Micro Pig Diet

A basic diet for a pet pig should contain several basic elements. Whenever possible, provide your pig with unlimited grazing on chemical-free grass. Fifty percent of the balance of the diet should be a good-quality commercial pig food. There are pelleted foods on the market specifically for miniature pigs. Feed pig starter to pigs under two months, and adult food to all others.

Since you are not planning to send your pig to market, do not use pig grower or finisher. Much research has gone into developing these foods that are designed to put on weight and bulk, neither of which is desirable for a pet pig. If your pig is a gilt or sow that is pregnant or lactating, there is a commercially available ration specifically for her. Pelleted pig food is partly made up of byproducts from the manufacture of food and drink for humans and other animals. Twenty-five percent of the pig’s diet can consist of fruits and vegetables.

To provide bulk, up to 25 percent of the pig’s diet can be bran. Never give bran when the pig is under oral medication, because the medication will pass through the pig’s system too rapidly.

Guinea Pigs

The anatomy of the guinea pig is a complex system of bones, organs and many other needed body structures. The guinea is a vertebrate, meaning is has a backbone as well as a skull and rib bones. Guinea pigs have 20 teeth however you only see the first four. Their teeth serve a huge purpose for both guinea pigs in the wild as well as pets. The upper incisor is much like a beaver’s in that it continues to grow throughout the guinea’s life time.

This is why a guinea pig shaves down their teeth by chewing on blocks of wood or the cage rails. A guinea pig’s eye is much like that of a pig because theirs contains three eyelids in the front left corner of the eye. Like humans, guinea pigs also have an iris and a pupil which adjusts to the amount of light it allows in.

How to Care for Guinea Pigs

The average life expectancy for a guinea pig is around four to eight years. To help your guinea pig live a long and healthy life make sure he gets plenty of good-quality hay for all that excellent calcium and to keep those teeth trimmed down. Good question! To turn it on its head, female guinea pigs very easily get pregnant and can do so from as young as four to six weeks of age, and remain reproductively active their whole life. Guinea pigs are strict herbivores and should never be given meat.

Do not give a guinea pig human foods such as chocolate and biscuits. Always act quiet around the guinea pig, avoid sudden movements, and always speak in a reassuring voice. Avoid carrying your guinea pig in your arms as they dislike being off the ground. You will need a safe, spacious area for the guinea pig to live. Guinea pigs develop a dewlap as they age: soft, loose skin under the chin.

Guinea pigs are happiest when they have at least one other guinea pig to socialize with. Exercise wheels and balls shouldn’t be bought, as they aren’t designed for guinea pigs and can hurt their backs. Don’t use any wooden toys that splinter, remove all labels and tags from the new toy, and ensure it is safe to chew on, as guinea pigs tend to chew on just about anything!

How to Clean your Guinea Pig Cage

One of the nice things about the Cubes and Coroplast cage is the ease of cleaning. Or, you could give them floor time during cage cleaning time. Or, you could remove them to a temporary bin during cage cleaning time. Or you could give them to another household member for lap-time during cage cleaning time. Toss the bedding in the garbage, or your compost heap if you are using appropriate bedding, or spread on your garden, or put in your green recycle bin.

If you use bleach, use only a maximum of 10% bleach and 90% water and rinse VERY WELL. If you are using the proper amount of bedding in your cage and changing it often enough, you should rarely have even damp spots on the bottom of your cage. If you do, you need to clean or spot clean more frequently or add more bedding or change the type of bedding you are using. Generally, the dirtiest part of the cage should be on the sides. Ideally, you should give the pigs floor time while you are cleaning their cage.

We must present a model of cavy care and our home must never ever smell like a cage or a barn. Some people use towels in a portion of a large Cubes and Coroplast cage and regular bedding on one end. Please see the Bedding page for more bedding ideas and suggestions.

The Lowdown on Guinea Pig Poop

If you’re thinking of getting a guinea pig for the first time, you probably want to know how much poop a guinea pig makes in a day. If you already own a guinea pig, you might want to know more about this coprophagia behavior you might have observed your guinea pig doing. For those who are curious, I’ve had both guinea pigs and rabbits, and I don’t think guinea pigs produce nearly as much poop as rabbits do. Some people clean a cage once a week for a single guinea pig, but that’s too much poop for me, so I prefer every 3-4 days. If a guinea pig has impacted stool, he needs a vet to manually get up in there and extract the poop.

Guinea pigs are vulnerable to stress, and changes in environment are a stressor to some guinea pigs. As a general rule, guinea pig poop is safe to be around. Some people have successfully trained their guinea pig to poop in a litter box, although it’s often not a 100%-of-the-time behavior. Guinea pig poop makes a great fertilizer and can be used in compost bins and piles, as well. You can also use guinea pig poop to make a liquid fertilizer.

Put your guinea pig poop in a bucket or can, then add water in a 2:1 ratio. There’s a town in Peru called Pachacama where they use guinea pig poop to make energy.

When The Pig Stops Eating

Several times a week we get a call or an E-Mail talking about the pig that has quit eating. A healthy pig loves to eat! That is the rule they live by. Sometimes it’s a big problem, sometimes a small one, but it is the first indication to you that all is not right with that pig. Pneumonia: The most common problem we have seen is pneumonia: Pig will stop eating and will run a fever usually in the 102 range at the beginning and can increase quickly if untreated.

Common pig pneumonia usually shows no symptoms other than the pig refusing to eat and running a fever. Giving a pig with a blockage a laxative can cause major damage to the pig. Pain: A pig that is in extreme pain from an injury or illness will not eat. The pig shows no symptoms at all until they quit eating. There is no fever and no symptoms beyond the pig refusing to eat.

The problem we seem to be seeing with these last two major problems is reluctance by some vets to open the pig up. It is not normal for a pig to go without eating for long periods of time!! Our thinking on this subject is if nothing stands out on any tests and this pig is still not eating than its time to take it to the next step and find out why.

Pasta promotes weight loss when pigs fly

Yes, that’s a real headline about an actual study. The researchers behind this review set out to study pasta’s effects on body fat. They couldn’t find a single randomized, controlled trial over three weeks long that was able to put those effects under the microscope. Which consisted of 32 trials that looked at pasta’s influence on global body fat measures – like weight, BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and belly fat. Pooling these results showed that eating pasta in a low-glycemic index setting was able to reduce subjects’ body weight by one pound.

There wasn’t any observable effect from pasta-eating with respect to waist size, waist-to-hip ration, or belly fat – at least, not compared to higher GI diets. Which really tells you nothing, except that it’s better to eat spaghetti than it is to eat spaghetti and donuts. Especially over the fact that subjects were able to maintain their meager, single-pound weight loss over six months. The study authors were even so bold to say that this proves eating pasta can deliver sustained weight loss. No matter how anyone tries to spin it, the fact is, pasta – a simple, refined carbohydrate – is not a weight loss food.

In chapter 11 of my A-List Diet Book, you’ll find countless recipes that will allow you to eat the foods you enjoy – without the refined carbohydrates. Recipes include stuffed chicken with squash ribbons and vegetable lasagna.

The Perfect Home for a Guinea Pig

Proper nutrition is very important to your guinea pig. Contrary to popular belief, guinea pig food rarely provides all the vitamin C that your pig requires. Though not necessarily high in vitamin C, other good treats to offer your guinea pig are coarse cut oatmeal, bananas, apples, carrots, papaya, mango, kiwi fruit, pineapple, and 1/2 an orange with most of the pulp scooped out. Hay is a very important part of the guinea pig diet. Guinea pigs cannot keep their nails trimmed either, and if they grow too long the nails will curl and your pig will have a hard time walking.

Choosing an appropriate home for your guinea pig is very important. Your guinea pig will get most of her exercise in her cage, so you should provide a large, spacious cage for her home. The cage should also have a few things for the guinea pig to climb on and hide in. NEVER use cedar shavings in your guinea pigs cage, as they can cause liver disease and respiratory problems in guinea pigs. If your guinea pig lets out a high-pitched squeal when it is being held, that means that your pig is feeling uncomfortable being held that way.

In order to insure the guinea pig’s safety, it is best to have your child sitting down with the pig in his lap, rather than walking around with the pig in his hands. Your guinea pig needs exercise time outside her cage every day.

Are guinea pigs allowed to go outside

If they’re living indoors, only put them in they’re run outside for an excercise in warm weather. If they’re living outdoors, only put them in they’re run outside for an excercise in reasonably warm weather. Don’t put them outside if it’s too hot -You should also put out a little hiding spot for your guinea pig to run into if he feels scared. Only put out a guinea pigs if it’s 65-80F degrees out, or else they freeze/overheat. Whats cute is they eat the grass but dont get excited and do it because they can get ticks.

What the Three Little Pigs Can Teach Us About the Secrets to Health and Healing

To understand the secrets to health and healing, I had to revisit a conference I attended in Las Vegas, where I heard a talk from Dr. James Chestnut. His paradigm of health is very congruent with most of what I try to live and share with others. Several key points that he made during that talk have stuck with me as I try to understand why some of my patients are ill and how I can guide them towards better health. We have historically believed that the reason we became ill was due to bad genes, bad germs or bad luck.

We are starting to understand that our environment can express certain aspects of our genes. The short version is this: epigenetics is the science of how our genes get expressed and are affected by environment and lifestyle. Our genes are the equivalent of the blueprints of your house. The food you eat, your quality and duration of sleep, your ability to manage stress, and your activity level will affect the way your genes are expressed. People need to understand how to control their own health.

If you believe that you just ‘catch illness’ or by treating only your symptom you have solved ‘the problem’, then you lose self-control over your health. Trying to treat your body for adapting to the environment will never correct the problem. Lowering your blood sugar with medication will never correct the problem which is completely preventable.

What Not to Feed Pigs

By Mel Dickinson – As important as it is to know what to feed pigs, it is just as important to know what not to feed pigs. This gives homesteaders and farmers a lot of freedom in what they feed their pigs. This can be done by using commercial feed, working with an animal nutritionist, or using a feed ration guide to help make sure all dietary requires are met for the optimal well-being of your pigs. Rules vary from state to state and some states prohibit supplemental feeding to those pigs being sold as pork. What not to feed pigs is anything moldy, slimy, or rotten.

Feeding raw meat to pigs can transfer diseases such as foot and mouth disease. Eating raw eggs can interfere with the biotin absorption of pigs. Free-range pig farming allows pigs to eat fresh grass, bugs, and roots. What not to feed pigs from the garden are unripened tomatoes, raw potatoes, raw sweet potatoes, parsnips, celery, celery root, parsley, onions, avocados, and rhubarb. Another thing to keep in mind when deciding what can pigs eat out of your garden is to make sure they eat a variety of produce.

We have had pigs that wouldn’t eat raw zucchini, which of course is a big summer produce item from our garden and markets. Whether you are new to raising pigs or have been doing it for years, it is always helpful to have a written list of what not to feed pigs on hand.

Understanding Your Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs are very friendly creatures, with a lot to say for themselves. They will make this noise to greet you, and to welcome the food you are bringing them. This is made when they meet a new guinea pig for the first time, especially in a boy meets girl situation. If there is any bickering between guinea pigs then this throaty rumble may be accompanied by some teeth chattering. Then there is the background of chat as they communicate with each other as they feed, made up of little squeaks and chirps, no doubt talking about food!

When behaviour goes wrongGuinea pigs are social creatures, and will rarely fight with each other. If there is not enough food around one dominant female may start to bully the others. If there is disagreement within a group of females it is important to provide several food bowls, and tubes to hide in. It is also worth considering introducing a neutered male who will take control of law and order. If there is a lack of food, particularly a lack of hay, then dominant guinea pigs may start chewing the coats of the others.

This is known as barbering, and the culprit will be the only one left with flowing locks! Barbering can also occur if the guinea pigs are bored. So provide them with plenty of hay and let them take lots of exercise and they are unlikely to start chewing each other.

My Guinea pig is laying on it’s side and is barely breathing, is she going to die?

With the symptoms you described they do seem serious and I would say she is near death. Seven years is a long time for a Guinea Pig – so her body is probably just giving up on her. I would always absolutely recommend taking her to the vet, if there is nothing they can do for her they at the least can euthanize her so she doesn’t have to suffer any more than she has to. If you choose not to take her to the vet, warmth is always the best thing you can offer an ill animal. Keeping her warm will relax her tense muscles and allow any of her energy that would have been used keeping her body warm to be used on other things.

If she is not able to move at all, you may want to attempt to get water in her through your finger or a dripper. If you are going to do this – make sure not to give her too much otherwise she may not be able to swallow and she will suffocate. If she seems to visibly take down the water well you can then give her a little more. There isn’t anything you can do otherwise – just keep her as comfortable as possible. You seemed to take care of her very well if she has lived this long.

Pigs as universal flu vaccine models

Researchers from The Pirbright Institute collaborated with the University of Oxford and the National Institutes of Health, USA, to show that S-FLU, a universal flu vaccine candidate, induces different immune responses in pigs compared to ferrets, raising the possibility that the ferrets may not give the whole picture and that pigs may more faithfully represent human influenza disease. The team also identified a type of T cell in pigs for the first time, which are able to rapidly help fight respiratory infections. The S-FLU aerosol vaccine, developed by Alain Townsend at Oxford, is a weakened strain of flu virus which is designed to trigger a response from T cells that are able to react to multiple strains of flu. This differs from conventional flu vaccines which activate antibodies that only respond to the strain contained in the vaccine. The research, published in theJournal of Immunology, demonstrated that when pigs received the S-FLU aerosol vaccine, the newly identified T cells were activated when challenged with a flu virus of a different strain.

Disease severity was also reduced, but the amount of virus remained the same. When S-FLU was administered to ferrets, the viral replication was reduced, as was the amount of virus that was transmitted to other animals. This striking difference in response to the exact same vaccine raises the question whether the ferret, an animal model that is considered gold standard for influenza research, provides results which are transferrable to humans. Pigs provide a model that is more similar in size, naturally infected by influenza viruses and with a very similar respiratory system to humans. The group’s discovery of tissue-resident memory T cell activation in pigs also brings them closer to understanding how influenza is combatted in the lung.

The results also show that targeting the lower respiratory tract with aerosol vaccination in pigs may be more effective than other routes of immunization in preventing severe disease, which provides promising evidence that this method of vaccination could be successful in humans too.

Do pigs eat meat?-About Food & Health

They eat pretty much everything, and anything they can. WHATEVER gets in their way… They will but don’t let a pig get the taste of blood into it’s mouth. It can have damaging affects to the pigs personality as in….once they taste blood they want it again and can actually become very aggressive.

We Pigs News for 05-29-2018

The types of antibiotics used by 110 pig farms in the Ashanti region and the handling practices of the farmers during disease management were assessed. Misdiagnosis and inadequate protection during antibiotic handling in the farms increased the risk of antibiotic resistance development and spread. The factors affecting antibiotic resistance development and spread are rife in pig farms in Ashanti region and appropriate education and veterinary interventions are needed to prevent resistant bacteria from becoming endemic in pork and pig farm communities. The use of antimicrobials in livestock and the husbandry practices of the farmers have been implicated as a cause of antibiotic resistance [2, 3]. Pig farmers use antibiotics for treatment, metaphylaxis, prophylaxis, and growth promotion in their farm animals [1, 2, 4].

The relatively larger farm animal populations consume more than half the antibiotics produced globally [4-6]. Diseases among pigs tend to reduce productivity by reducing feed conversion efficiency, slowing growth rate, and increasing mortalities. Because of the central role of antibiotics in disease management, a study of prevalent diseases and their management practices will aid in informing practical interventions that will aim at reducing the development and spread of antibiotic resistance as a result of antibiotic use in disease management. The absence of data on the type of antibiotics used and their handling practices on pig farms, especially in Ghana and Africa, is detrimental to our understanding of the factors leading to antibiotic resistance. As a step to encourage surveillance studies that shall help researchers track the factors influencing bacterial resistance, this study assessed the antibiotic types and their handling practices among pig farmers in disease management, allowing for recommendations to contain and prevent the development and spread of resistant bacteria through the food chain.

Table 1: Types of antibiotics used by pig farmers in selected districts in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The types and handling practices of antibiotics used in both clinical and veterinary medicine have been implicated in the development and spread of resistant bacterial phenotypes that is affecting the therapeutic efficacy of current antibiotics and food security [1, 2, 7]. This study aimed at assessing the practices and types of antibiotics prevalent on Ghanaian pig farms, using the Ashanti region as a case study. The use of antibiotics intended for clinical use is advised against as a cause of the spread of antibiotic resistance from farms to communities and treatment centres [3, 7]. Hence, the use of mainly veterinary antibiotics for basically therapeutic purposes among the farms reduces the risks of antibiotics resistance development and spread.

Nevertheless, the farms mainly depended on the tetracyclines, sulphadimidine, dihydrostreptomycin, and benzylpenicillin for the management of most diseases. The farmers depended more on fellow farmers than veterinarians for antibiotic knowledge, which resulted in the use of the same antibiotics and similar handling practices among farms in close proximity or within the same district. Errors in antibiotic handling and administration were common among the farms. Inadequate knowledge about antibiotics and their effect on the environment and public health among pig farmers made them use and dispose of antibiotics imprudently, increasing the risk of antibiotic resistance development and spread. Education on the importance of pro- and prebiotics, improved farm hygienic practices, strict laws regarding the sales, and use of antibiotics and increased veterinarian interventions on the farms are important to limit the occurrence of diseases and subsequent use of antibiotics.

Percy Pigs could be BANNED by health secretary Jeremy Hunt

Percy Pigs could be banned as part of a new policy to tackle childhood obesity. There are calls to ban cartoon characters like Percy advertising unhealthy food. Percy Pigs could be banned as part of a new bid to tackle childhood obesity, it has been reported. The popular Marks & Spencer sweets could reportedly be targeted as part of a proposed ban on cartoon characters being used to promote unhealthy foods. Percy Pigs could be banned as part of a proposal that would bar cartoon characters advertising unhealthy foods.

Guinea pig with large lump under chin |

Difficult situation but yes, a trip to the vet to find out what it is. If it’s a fatty lump then it will probably not inconvenience his day to day life if he can still eat. He’s given up some things but there’s plenty other things he can eat. My old sows had large fibrous smooth lumps in their saggy chin skin. Not attatched the deeper tissues, you could move them but no pain ).

If it’s a dental abscess then it will stop him eating and the infection would be potentially fatal if it spread. He’d need it draining, antibiotics and his teeth looked at. If it is malignant- then you’d have to decide with your vet what the next step is. Would you want to subject your middleaged pig to surgery. What’s the risks involved with surgery and recovery. At least if you have a consultation, you’ll know what’s the way forward.

The not eating is IMO a sign that a pig isn’t well.

Three of the more commonly transmitted diseases have reached record levels in the U.S. Nationwide, there were 1.6 million cases of chlamydia in 2016, 470,000 cases of gonorrhea and 28,000 new cases of syphilis. Mutations of the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria that causes gonorrheal infections have led to a high incidence of antibiotic resistance, making it extremely difficult to treat. Research looking at syphilis samples from the U.S., South America, Europe, Africa and Australasia found both of the two main strains of syphilis have developed antibiotic resistance.
