Egypt orders slaughter of all pigs over swine flu

Egypt began slaughtering the roughly 300,000 pigs in the country Wednesday as a precaution against swine flu even though no cases have been reported here, infuriating farmers who resisted the move and demanded compensation. Egypt responded similarly in recent years to an outbreak of bird flu, which is endemic to the country and has killed two dozen people. At one large pig farming center just north of Cairo, farmers refused to cooperate with Health Ministry workers who came to slaughter the animals and the workers left without carrying out the government order. Most in the Muslim world consider pigs unclean animals and do not eat pork because of religious restrictions. In other parts of the Muslim world, pigs are often raised by religious minorities who can eat pork.

In Jordan, the government decided Wednesday to shut down the country’s five pig farms, involving 800 animals, for violating public health safety regulations. Half the pigs will be killed and the rest will be relocated to areas away from the population, officials said. In Egypt, pigs are raised and consumed mainly by the Christian minority, which some estimates put at 10 percent of the population. Health Ministry spokesman Abdel-Rahman Shaheen estimated there are between 300,000-350,000 pigs in Egypt. Hard hit by bird flu Egypt was among the countries hardest hit by bird flu.

In the northern suburbs of Cairo Wednesday, health authorities killed 250 pigs and buried them. Angry farmers demanded compensation and provincial governors paid them around 1,000 Egyptian pounds per head. The farmers asked for an official government decision to set a price for each pig slaughtered.

China to kill 1,332 pigs over swine fever outbreak

Authorities in China’s Zhejiang province said it will cull 1,332 hogs after an African swine fever outbreak was reported in the city of Yueqing, the city government said in a post on its official Weibo account on Thursday. Authorities have sealed off an area within 3 km from the pig farming community where the deadly disease was found, according to the statement. The local government has also banned the movement of animals that can be easily infected inside and outside the affected area, and closed some live hog trading markets and slaughterhouses following the outbreak, the statement said. China is home to the world’s largest pig herd and the case in Yueqing, a city under the jurisdiction of the nearby city of Wenzhou, was the first confirmed outbreak in the eastern province of Zhejiang and the country’s fourth in a month. The latest cull will bring the total number of pigs deliberately killed to prevent African swine fever to over 25,000 in an effort to control the spread of the highly contagious disease, which was first reported in the city of Shenyang in the northeastern province of Liaoning just three weeks ago.

Two other cases have been reported in Henan in central China and Jiangsu province to the north of Zhejiang. The virus which causes African swine fever is hardy and has been shown to remain infectious for at least 30 days in uninhabited pig pens, over four months in pork products, including salted dried hams, and indefinitely in frozen pig carcasses, it said.

DC Used to Feed Its Trash to Pigs. Why’d We Stop?

The Residence Act of 1790 moved the seat of US government from Philadelphia to what would become DC. With that small detail taken care of, the city we know today would grow around the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. The real challenge for a new city in the 19th century was how to deal with all the garbage. They often decided to go out of sight and out of mind, taking trash to pig farms outside city limits. By 1943, the public opinion of the practice had soured.

A report from the National Institutes of Health described how feeding uncooked garbage to swine was a major cause of human trichinosis, which at the time was more common in the US than anywhere else in the world-mostly thanks to parasite-ridden pigs. The NIH notes that if table scraps were thoroughly cooked and the resulting pork was prepared correctly, the disease transmission would drop dramatically, and it would again be a profitable, useful way to get rid of garbage. It turns out the NIH was right: if properly boiled for 30 minutes before feeding, the USDA allows pigs to eat garbage, and the guidelines were last updated in 2009. It’s hard to make a food pyramid out of table scraps. We throw away more and more inedible, inorganic wastes, so it’s hard to feed pigs a balanced diet on trash alone.

Plus, studies and anecdotal evidence have found that it creates lower-quality meat that spoils sooner. If you take care of the hygiene issues, feeding pigs trash is still a viable option-they don’t mind.

The Effects of Diet on Anatomy, Physiology and Health in the Guinea Pig

With guinea pig numbers increasing in many countries and owners seeking husbandry and veterinary advice and interventions it is imperative that we understand guinea pig health and welfare issues. Following its domestication in 500-1000 AD, the guinea pig has been kept as an important source of food and is still eaten in many parts of South America today [2,3]. Since being introduced to Europe by Spanish colonialists in the 16th century, they have been commonly kept as pets, as well as used extensively in medical research with the first documented experiments performed on guinea pigs dating back to 1780 [1,4]. Since that time guinea pigs have played a pivotal role in epidemiological study and pharmaceutical development. Their use in research has been declining rapidly since its peak in the 1960s, from around 2.5 million annually in the USA, to just over 200,000 in 2010 [5,6].

As the population of guinea pigs used in research declined, the popularity of the guinea pig as a pet has soared. In 2012 around 13,000 guinea pigs were being used in UK laboratories, yet approximately 1 million were being kept as pets in UK households, an equal number to that of rabbits [7,8]. Indeed the Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association have reported the guinea pig as the UK’s 7th most popular pet, kept in more households than any other pet rodent. Due to the highly sociable nature of guinea pigs, most literature aimed at pet owners advises keeping guinea pigs in groups of at least two. Traditionally guinea pigs and rabbits have been housed together, and up to even the late 1980s owners were advised that cohabiting guinea pigs and rabbits did not pose a problem.

Unsurprisingly it has been demonstrated that guinea pigs actively seek out fellow guinea pig company in preference to that of rabbits. More recently the question of UVB light requirement in the guinea pig has been studied in order to ascertain whether there are any clinical or physiological complications linked to this practice or whether it can improve their health. The guinea pig gastrointestinal tract is dominated by a large caecum which breaks down the cellulose content of the diet. Exclusively feeding a pelleted rat diet to a guinea pig can result in death due to vitamin C deficiency within 14 days. In the UK cohort there was a smaller proportion of owners that fed commercial guinea pig dry food, just 73.5% compared to 83% of Polish owners, with 3% of British owners feeding rabbit food and a further 3% feeding rodent muesli, neither of which meet the guinea pig’s unique dietary requirements.

Of the 264 UK guinea pigs that were fed fruit, eight had been diagnosed with cataracts, whereas only one guinea pig out of the 133 not fed fruit had cataracts.

Sick Guinea Pigs Rescued from PetSmart, Duke and Bogart

As pets go, guinea pigs aren’t super demanding. All day long, Duke and Bogart suffered; both were sickly and stuck in tiny tanks 24/7. Duke had a persistent, crusty yellow eye infection, while Bogart had an abscess on his back and required hospitalization. The three managers of this particular PetSmart location refused to get the animals the proper veterinary care they so badly needed. PETA had eyewitnesses investigating this PetSmart location, as well as others across the country.

Duke and Bogart were rescued by the group and given the medical attention they deserved. Duke and Bogart are now best friends, living with their new mom, Michelle Kretzer, in Clearwater, Florida, eating fresh leafy greens and going on picnics in the park and to movie nights on the couch with their favorite veggie snacks. One of Duke’s new hobbies is eating fresh produce from the garden. It’s a far cry from his daily imprisonment in a tiny store tank. PETA’s investigation of Duke and Bogart’s former residence in the Nashville-area PetSmart prompted officials to rescue other sick animals on the premises.

On June 26, 2018, all three store managers pleaded guilty. PETA’s investigation included stores in Brandon, Florida, and Peoria, Arizona, and uncovered evidence that PetSmart had animals in stock that carried diseases transmissible to humans. The stores did not include care plans for their animals, including very sick ones, on holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Caring for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Ferrets

Rabbits are vaccinated against Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus from 4 weeks of age and then every 6 months to maintain immunity throughout life. Whilst there are no vaccines available to prevent myxomatosis, rabbits should be vaccinated against Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus. Rabbits can be infected with either fur mites or ear mites. Rabbits with ear mites frequently scratch at their ears and earwax may be visible. Rabbits and guinea pigs aren’t susceptible to heartworm disease, however ferrets are!

Prevention is by far the best approach and thankfully relatively simple. Rabbits and guinea pigs have teeth that continually grow hence overgrown incisors and molars can occur. We often see rabbits with overgrown teeth due to poor diet or hereditary factors. Rabbits groom themselves like cats and therefore develop hairballs – a healthy diet prevents hairballs becoming a problem. Male rabbits are usually desexed from 4-6 months of age.

Female rabbits should also be desexed between 4-6 months of age. The main reason for desexing female rabbits is the prevention of uterine cancer. Guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets all have continuously growing nails that need to be trimmed regularly.

You can feed us beets 1-2 times per week, and beet greens only 1-2 times per month since they’re high in calcium, A, and oxalates. They can stain human hands pink if they don’t wear gloves when cutting them, so if your human has pink-stained hands and hasn’t given you beets, they’ve been holding out on you. It’s no big deal, but try to reassure your human that you are not peeing blood, or they probably will never give you beets again! It’s too bad you can only feed us beets occasionally since they’re so good! 5/5 stars!

Why is my guinea pig wet?

OK, when you house 2 pigs together male / female , male / male they create close bonds to each other, regardless of weather neutered or not. When 1 of your males is frisky he will sort of purr, shake his booty and spray urine over the object of his desire, Namely your other piggie. Or your amorous piggie has tried mating with the wet one and that is why he’s wet. Or it could have sat under the water bottle and been dripped on. I shouldn’t worry too much, just keep an eye on them to see if he’s laying under the water bottle.

Czech, 49, 2004: 389-399 Review Article Kaolin, bentonite, and zeolites as feed supplements for animals: health advantages and risks M. T, L. M, L. D, I. P Veterinary Research Institute, Brno, Czech Republic ABSTRACT: Feeding kaolin as a supplement to pigs for prevention of diarrheal diseases has been introduced into some farms in the Czech Republic.

Another risk factor is a potential contamination of originally sterile kaolin with conditionally pathogenic mycobacteria from surface water, dust, soil, and other constituents of the environment in the mines during kaolin extraction, processing and storage. Mining of kaolin deposits in southern Moravia, Czech Republic, has prompted some Czech farmers to experiment with kaolin. As kaolin feeding showed to be effective in some farms, the abundance and efficacy of kaolin may provide a suitable material to protect livestock from diarrheal diseases. Kaolin deposits in the Czech Republic Kaolin is formed under acidic conditions through weathering or hydrothermal changes of feldspars, and – to a lower extent – also other aluminosilicates. Kaolin deposits in the area of Karlovy Vary are primary, i.e.

kaolin remained in the place of its formation. Aer kaolin washing, classification and separation steps according to the particle size, kaolin sedimentation, addition of colloid agent, and kaolin drying in wire baskets, the product was finished and could be dispatched to customers. Kaolin structure Kaolin is a plastic raw material, particularly consisting of the clay mineral kaolinite. Decontaminating properties of kaolin Due to its adsorbent capability and lack of primary toxicity, kaolin is considered a simple and effective means to prevent or ameliorate the adverse effects exerted by many toxic agents, not only those from the environment, but also those from the living organisms. Toxicological impact of kaolin Aer oral or intradermal administration of kaolin, no toxic effects were observed in the organisms.

The risk of kaolin contamination with dioxins Contamination of kaolin with dioxins represents a potential risk. The risk of kaolin contamination with mycobacteria Several risk factors which may cause kaolin contamination, particularly with conditionally pathogenic mycobacteria, during its production must be considered.

Pork and Organ Meat Health Benefits

Meat contains the B vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin; and a few minerals, such as calcium, potassium, and iron. A recent 10-year study, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, found that people red meat a week are more likely to develop colon cancer than people who don’t. Pork has a higher proportion of unsaturated fats than other meats; its cholesterol content is also high: 80mg in a 3-ounce pork chop and 100mg in 3 ounces of spare ribs. Many of us overlooked at the importance of organ meats in our diet. Compared to regular cuts of muscle meat, organ meats are more densely packed with just about every nutrient, including heavy doses of B vitamins such as: B1, B2, B6, folic acid and vitamin B12.

Organ meats are also loaded with minerals like phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium and iodine, and provide the important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Brains are higher in cholesterol than any other food; a 4-ounce serving of beef brains has more than 2,000 mg, and pork brains contain an even larger amount. On the plus side, they are an excellent source of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 helps alleviate fatigue, increase mental ability, beneficial in nerve’s health, and depression, as well as helps prevent anemia. A 4-ounce serving of beef liver provides more than 10 times the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A.

Good source of vitamin B12. Liver contains 35 to 50 times the RDA of vitamin B12. Iron and zinc. Heart provides high-quality protein and less fat and cholesterol than other organ meats. Heart is high in vitamin B12, iron, and potassium; in addition, also contains Selenium, Phosphorus & Zinc, along with essential amino acids that help build muscle, store energy and boost stamina and endurance.

Tongue contains useful amounts of most of the B vitamins, especially B12. Tripe provides high-quality protein, a fair amount of potassium, and small amounts of minerals. Cooking Tip: Heart muscle meat is a bit tougher than other meats, but marinating the meat in an acidic-based marinade helps to tenderize it and add delicious flavor as well. Excessive liver consumption can cause a buildup of vitamin A. Add liver in your regular diet at least once a week if possible for maximum benefit of its high levels of nutrients.

If you are showing your pig in a breeding gilt show, you will likely be required to show the registration papers for the animal that come from the breed association. If you are able to wait until the pig is closer to 70 pounds before purchasing it, you will have a better chance of predicting how the animal will turn out. Selecting a good animal It is extremely helpful to know and understand the rules of the show in which your pig will be exhibited before you purchase your animal. At a pig sale you can compare pigs from different breeders and save time driving from farm to farm comparing animals. Rump Ham Side Belly or underline Sheath Hock Rear flank Foot or toe Stifle Dew claw Tail As with other animals, pigs don’t begin to fatten much until the end of their growing period, so the feeder pigs from which you will select your project animal will not and should not have much noticeable fat.

The pigs should be weighed at the same time of day and on the same day of the week, since a pig’s weight will change throughout the day, depending on the amount of feed or water it has had. Weighing at the same time of day keeps you from recording large variations in weight that may be due only to water intake. With show pigs you try to have the pig reach the point when it looks its very best on the day of the show. 7 If pigs are shown several times during a season, they should be isolated after each return to the farm so that other swine on the farm won’t be exposed to the many disease-causing organisms animals can pick up at a show or exhibition. If you purchase show pigs directly from several farms, it is best to keep the pigs from each farm isolated in separate pens and away from fenceline contact with other pigs for 60 days. If show pigs are bought at a sale, or if pigs from more than one source are mixed while being transported, they may be exposed to disease.

If the judge really likes the pig, he or she will point to the pig and ask that it be penned. Once the judge pens the pigs he or she likes best, the other pigs will be excused from the show ring and the penned pigs released into the show ring for a more detailed evaluation.

What should I feed my guinea pig?

Guinea pigs are herbivores that would usually spend many hours a day foraging and grazing on grass in small herds. Their teeth grow continuously throughout life, so they need a diet high in roughage to encourage chewing. Chewing helps to wear down their teeth and prevent serious dental problems. Providing sufficient fibre in their diet is also very important for both their gastrointestinal system and general health. Guinea pigs should not be fed Lucerne or Clover hays as they are too high in protein and calcium.

Providing grass/grass hay is paramount in providing the ‘complete’ diet and encourages ‘chewing’ for long periods of time. A dietary source of Vitamin C because, guinea pigs cannot synthesise Vitamin C from other food substances. This is usually supplied sufficiently by the fresh leafy green veggies, but it is safer to supplement this with small quantities of vitamin C rich foods such as citrus or kiwi fruit. High quality commercial ‘Guinea Pig’ pellets may be offered in small quantities, but these should not form the main part of the diet. If you need to change your guinea pig’s diet, please make sure you introduce any changes gradually over a few weeks.

What are the health benefits of eating pigs kidneys

A USDA study found that artichokes have more antioxidants than any other vegetable, including quercertin, rutin, anthocyanins, cynarin, luteolin, and silymarin. Artichoke leaf extract kills cancer cells and reduces their proliferation in many different forms of cancer, including prostate cancer, leukemia, and breast cancer. The flavanoids present in artichokes reduce the risk of breast cancer. The pulp of artichoke leaves contains a polyphenol antioxidant called cynarin which increases bile flow. Cynarin and another antioxidant, silymarin, may even regenerate liver tissue.

Artichokes are a natural diuretic, they aid digestion, and improve gallbladder function. Many people swear by artichokes as a hangover treatment. Ingredients in artichoke leaves reduce cholesterol by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase. They raise good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol. One large artichoke contains a quarter of the recommended daily intake of fiber, and a medium artichoke has more fiber than a cup of prunes.

Best liquid Vitamin C for guinea pigs?

It sure sounds like you take very good care of your piggies! I have found that the Vit.C drops you get at the pet store are a little less than useless. Not only do the pigs HATE the taste of it, but once the drops hit the water, the chlorine neutralizes it anyway. They are chock full of nasty chemicals and preservatives. I use non-chlorinated water and mix Puritan’s Pride Vit.C crystals in a one-gallon container every morning.

The pigs cannot taste it and this is human grade Vit.C. You can buy it over the internet only. Since you are already feeding Oxbow pellets, I’m sure you know that they already contain stabilized Vit.C in them. Whatever is lost by the pellets due to age or light exposure, will be made up by the daily Vit.C crystals in the water. Lastly, try to feed them veggies that contain lots of Vit.C like bell peppers, strawberries, etc.

Keep trying that orange!! Sometimes, it takes awhile. Experiment with different types of oranges or try breaking off little tiny bits out of the center of the orange slice and put it to his lips to get him to taste it. I’m sure your piggies are thankful they have such a wonderful, responsible owner.

Gorgeous Guineas Piggy Problems

Skin problems are one of the most common reasons that guinea pigs require Veterinary treatment. Often guineas present with both fungal and parasitic problems at the same time and need treating for both. As soon as you see any signs of skin problems, don’t hang about – get a diagnosis from your Vet and get them treated as soon as possible. Guinea pigs have very sensitive skin and are prone to fungal and parasitic problems. Fungal skin problems are particularly common here in the UK.

Guinea pigs are originally from Peru where the climate is warm and dry. Here, there is always moisture in the air – cold and damp in the winter, and hot and humid in the summer. Skin problems frequently occur where a guinea is stressed, ill, or has a depressed immune system. Sometimes skin problems in guineas are mis-diagnosed by Vets. Fungal skin conditions are often treated as if they were caused by Mites, despite the skin condition being presented.

Guineas are then put through the pain of two or three Ivermectin injections, the problem isn’t cured and your guinea is still in a lot of pain and discomfort. Check out our Photo Gallery and see what some of the most common skin problems look like.

Characterization of Antimicrobial Resistance Determinants and Class 1 and Class 2 Integrons in Salmonella enterica spp., Multidrug-Resistant Isolates from Pigs

The present study characterizes the AMR determinants of 62 multi-drug resistant Salmonella enterica spp. Isolates from swine, which were obtained between 2004-2006, a major source of human salmonellosis. The AMR determinants were investigated by PCR, checking the presence of class 1 and class 2 integrons and 29 resistance genes. Genes sul1, blaTEM1-like, aadA2, tet(A), and dfrA12 were more prevalent and blaOXA-like/aadA1 were the most common. Four isolates, including S.

Typhimurium, Salmonella Bredeney, and Salmonella Kapemba harboured a class 2 integron 2300 bp estX-sat2-aadA1. Results from the study highlight the importance of class 1 integrons and certain genes in MDR swine Salmonella isolates. The information is of relevance for monitoring in the forthcoming scope of reduction of antibiotic usage in swine production. View Full-Text This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.

Guinea Pig Time – 6 week Shred

I am committing the next 6 weeks to demonstrate the simple effects of diet and exercise on body composition. Some of this is good advice, the majority however is rubbish. I am also scared at the continually growing rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, stroke and cancer in this country. I am hoping to show the 62+ % of Australians who are overweight or worse obese, that weight loss is achievable and a worthy cause. I will be recording my initial BMI, body composition.

Diet: I will follow a low carb diet, eating 3 meals per day – no quantity restrictions. Exercise: I will follow my own High intensity Training workout plan, which will be between 40-45 mins max, no more than 4 times per week. I took the photo at the commencement of my 6 week adventure no turning back now ????. Related.

The guinea pig or cavy, Cavia porcellus, is the domesticated form of a rodent found in the wild in South America. Diet: Guinea pigs have an absolute dietary requirement for vitamin C, without it they may become very ill. A pelleted diet formulated specifically for guinea pigs should comprise the primary diet. New foods should be introduced gradually, one at a time, to make sure your guinea pig does not develop diarrhea. Do everything you can to avoid such an accident in the first place i.e.

keep her away from male GPs. The gestation period for guinea pigs is approximately 60-70 days. Guinea pigs do not normally require assistance in giving birth. Guinea pigs become sexually mature as early as four weeks of age so it is important to separate the different sexes by then. Use of medications without veterinary supervision may result in the death of your pig as many medications used in other animals can be deadly to GPs.

Blood in urine: Bloody urine may appear red or brown. Diarrhea: Diarrhea can result from feeding your guinea pig a new type of vegetable, or an unusually large quantity of fresh vegetables. Your guinea pig may have skin mites, fleas, a bacterial infection or a fungus, such as ringworm. Lameness due to Vitamin C deficiency may be seen after only 2 weeks on a deficient diet with fast growing young and pregnant pigs being affected first. Loss of appetite: Being small animals, guinea pigs usually eat constantly and metabolize food very fast, so if an illness or other condition is preventing them from eating they rapidly loose weight and become seriously debilitated in a short time.

Most miniature pigs seen in the United States are descendants of the feral pigs from Southeast Asia, the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and Africa. The pigs most frequently seen as pets are descendants of the Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pigs, introduced into the United States in 1985. These pigs have a sway back, short wrinkled faces, pot bellies, small ears, straight tails and black coloring with occasional white markings or they may have white skin and range in color from red to white to black and white. Behavior: Pigs have a difficult time handling excess heat and cold. Pigs often choose to urinate and defecate in one place they are easily housebroken.

Play time activities are important to keep your pig from becoming bored and diverting the rooting to items easily damaged such as carpet, flooring and furniture. Remember pigs can root under fences and destroy well-manicured lawns and flower gardens. Adult pigs are most comfortable at temperatures between 60-70°F while those without hair are more comfortable at 65-75°F. Extreme cold is not tolerated and outdoor pigs must be provided with shelter and supplemental heat in the winter. The smaller the pig, the more sensitive to cold it is.

Diet: Pig feeds are targeted to certain life stages i.e. starter, grower, maintenance and breeder. Pigs 4-8 weeks of age should be fed 0.6-1.4 lbs. Once weaned, pigs can be started on second stage nursery diets.

Guinea Pig Breeds, Behavior and Breeders

Choosing a guinea pig is a hard process because there is a huge variety of guinea pig breeds. Guinea pigs of different breeds can have completely opposite personalities. A particular guinea pig breed requires a special care. The basic classification can be made according to the hair type: short haired guinea pig or long haired guinea pig. If you saw a guinea pig with a crest on the forehead of the same color as a fur, you just identified a second type of Crested guinea pig – English Crested.

Just like any other breed, Himalayan guinea pig was domesticated in South America. Out of all guinea pig breeds Silkie is the most gentle. In contrast to Silkie, Coronet has a large rosette in a middle of its forehead. This striking feature is a result of crossbreeding of Silkie with Crested guinea pig in the 18th century in England. The hair can cover piggy’s head.

Angora Guinea Pig. It is very common in European countries, especially Germany, so many guinea pig owners around the world are not familiar with this breed. Merino guinea pig is a relatively recent addition to guinea pig’s world. It is a curly and long-haired version of Coronet guinea pig.

BUNS Newsletter

It’s almost impossible to gauge the age of an adult guinea pig after they are full grown. Just like us, guinea pigs age differently and at different rates. Signs of aging appear earlier in some guinea pigs, and later in others. A senior guinea pig may lose muscle tone and weight. Senior guinea pigs spend more time sleeping and less time exploring, so it’s important to make their environment a cozy one.

Senior guinea pigs tend to stay in one spot longer, so be sure to spot clean daily and change the bedding more frequently, if needed. One of the easiest ways to pick up on a health issue early is to weigh weekly, and more frequently in aging or ill guinea pigs. Older guinea pigs can suffer from heart failure, kidney trouble, and overgrown molars, among other ailments – all that begin with vague symptoms. Female guinea pigs are prone to ovarian cysts as they age. Male guinea pigs come with their own problems later in life.

Senior guinea pigs can be allowed some extra treat foods like raw oats and corn on the cob. Senior guinea pigs can still enjoy satisfying lives and even stronger bonds with you.

How To Choose a Healthy Guinea Pig

Determining the optimal dietary lysine:energy ratios for health challenged grow-finish pigs

When pigs become health challenged with a virus like Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, production efficiency and pig wellbeing is reduced that can have a larger economic burden on the U.S. swine industry. How to best feed and manage these health challenged pig flows is poorly understood. Interestingly, the optimum dietary requirements for energy and protein as well as amino acids have not been determined for such health challenged pigs. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of increasing SID Lys:ME on growth performance during a PRRSV challenge.

After the 35 to 49-d growth study, all pigs were fed a common diet until they reached a target market weight of ~127 kg. There were no difference in PRRS serology due to altered Lys:ME diets. Breakpoint analysis showed that the optimal Lys:ME for ADG and G:F was increased up to 136% and 130%, respectively, in PRRSV infected 50 kg BW pigs compared to healthy controls depending on the breakpoint model used. In 25 kg BW pigs the optimal Lys:ME for ADG increased up to 107% as determined by breakpoint analysis; however, optimal Lys:ME for G:F was decreased up to 25% in PRRSV infected pigs. In the 50 kg pigs, the predicted requirement for ADG and G:F in PRRSV pigs using a quadratic model were above the highest Lys:ME diet.

This was similar for G:F in control pigs in the 25 kg BW pigs. Further studies should be conducted to more accurately determine the Lys:ME requirement. Overall, increasing Lys:ME 110-130% above the NRC requirement increased growth performance and feed efficiency in PRRSV infected pigs, and the response was similar between natural and experimental PRRSV infection.

Guinea Pig Health Checks

Gastrointestinal health and function in weaned pigs: a review of feeding strategies to control post‐weaning diarrhoea without using in‐feed antimicrobial compounds

While approximately 50% of weaned pigs consume their first feed within 24‐h post‐weaning, in approximately 10% weaning anorexia persists for up to 48 h. Antibiotics and minerals, especially ZnO and CuSO4, are often included in the diets for weaned pigs to control post‐weaning diarrhoea and optimise growth performance. Reported decreased pepsin activity in the stomach mucosa at weaning without altering lipase activity while other studies reported increased pepsin and lipase activities in the stomach mucosa after weaning. Compared with sow‐reared pigs, weaned pigs have higher gastric pH value and this may be partly due to a lower acid secretion capacity of the stomach at weaning along with reduction in lactic acid production from lactose. Reporting a reduction in stomach emptying rate in pigs on 3 day and 14 days after weaning compared with the suckling pigs.

Gastric stasis has been documented in early‐weaned pigs as a contributing factor for PWD. In addition, it has been reported that a stress gene, corticotrophin‐releasing factor receptor 2, whose activation has been implicated in the inhibition of gastric motility, is up‐regulated in the jejunum of weaned pigs. Morphological changes in the small intestine of pigs around weaning Weaning Results Intestinal section References 29 days Decreased VH 3 days PW Increased CD 3 days PW Small intestine van Beers‐Schreurs et al. Post‐weaning diarrhoea is a condition in weaned pigs characterised by frequent discharge of watery faeces during the first 2 weeks after weaning and represents one of the major economic problems for the pig industry. The pH values of weaned pigs at different segments Weaning age Sites Range References 10 days Stomach 2.6-4.2 Owusu‐Asiedu et al.

A recent study investigated the effect of dietary protein level, ETEC infection and time of feeding after weaning on the microbial profiles in the GIT of weaned pigs. Generally, animal protein sources appear to have a superior feeding value than plant protein sources when fed to weaned pigs partly due to the fact that proteins of plant origin are less digestible than animal proteins. There is evidence that feeding a high protein diet immediately after weaning could cause protein maldigestion as the digestive system of weaner pigs is insufficiently developed to fully digest and absorb dietary proteins. These findings indicate that feeding a lower‐protein diet may not hinder the growth of pigs after weaning if they receive similar digestible energy contents and adequate levels of essential AA including valine and isoleucine.

Eat Wild

Since the late 1990s, a growing number of ranchers have stopped sending their animals to the feedlots to be fattened on grain, soy and other supplements. For these reasons and more, grass-fed animals live low-stress lives and are so healthy there is no reason to treat them with antibiotics or other drugs. A major benefit of raising animals on pasture is that their products are healthier for you. Raising animals on pasture requires more knowledge and skill than sending them to a feedlot. Raising animals on pasture is dramatically different from the status quo.

Although the food is cheap and convenient, there is growing recognition that factory farming creates a host of problems, including: Animal stress and abuse Air, land, and water pollution The unnecessary use of hormones, antibiotics, and other drugs Low-paid, stressful farm work The loss of small family farms Food with less nutritional value. Animals raised in factory farms are given diets designed to boost their productivity and lower costs. A high-grain diet can cause physical problems for ruminants-cud-chewing animals such as cattle, dairy cows, goats, bison, and sheep. To prevent more serious and sometimes fatal reactions, the animals are given chemical additives along with a constant, low-level dose of antibiotics. Meat and eggs from these animals are lower in a number of key vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids.

When animals are raised in feedlots or cages, they deposit large amounts of manure in a small amount of space. When you choose to eat meat, eggs, and dairy products from animals raised on pasture, you are improving the welfare of the animals, helping to put an end to environmental degradation, helping small-scale ranchers and farmers make a living from the land, helping to sustain rural communities, and giving your family the healthiest possible food.

ASMR – Vet Check-Up on Guinea Pig Roleplay!

We Pigs News for 05-05-2018

MRSA in the Norwegian pig population was first investigated in an European Union baseline study in 2008, which did not detect LA-MRSA. In 2011 and 2012, anonymized prevalence studies demonstrated MRSA CC398 in a few samples from a single slaughterhouse and a pig herd [13, 14]. In early 2013, two independent identifiable findings of MRSA CC398 in the Norwegian pig population initiated a public health risk assessment concerning the possible impacts of an increasing prevalence of LA-MRSA in pigs. The first traceable finding of LA-MRSA in pigs occurred in February 2013, and by the end of 2014, outbreak investigations and surveillance had identified MRSA CC398 in 26 pig farms, 2 slaughterhouses and 36 humans. The trade of pigs was identified as the main route of MRSA CC398 transmission from the 3 primary case farms.

A livestock transport vehicle had twice transported pigs from a MRSA CC398-positive finishing farm to a slaughterhouse without subsequent disinfection shortly before transporting pigs to the farm involved and was considered the most likely transmission route. Based on other studies, the trade of pigs has been shown to be the predominant route of transmission of MRSA CC398 among pigs [15, 16], including transboundary transmission. Domestic trade in pigs was found to be the main route of interfarm transmission of MRSA after primary introductions, indicating that limiting the number of farms connected through trade is important in preventing MRSA transmission. In conclusion, this study confirms that the trade of pigs and occupational exposure are the major risk factors for transmission of MRSA CC398 between humans and pigs. The surveillance programme for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in pigs in Norway 2014.

The growth performance criteria were not significantly influenced by inclusion of dried cassava peels in the diet of wearner pigs up to 50% levels in the control diet. These workers carried out a preliminary trial on the value of dried cassava peels, in which 13% moist cassava peels at 40-50% levels of diet were fed to pigs and discovered no statistical differences in the live weight gain and feed conversion efficiency between low and high cassava diets. The significant differences observed in the body weight development also agreed with Stanogias and Pearce who replaced maize with moist cassava peel meal and discovered that pigs on diets containing cassava peel meal grew slightly but not significantly faster and were slightly more efficient in feed conversion than pigs on diets with maize. CONCLUSION. The results of this study is a serious pointer that feeding dried cassava peels solely up to fifty percent can achieve equal or more positive effects than using high level of maize in diet of wearner pigs.

Staying Safe Around Animals

If you have a pet, you know how much fun it can be: watching little fish swim in a tank, seeing a dog catch a ball in its mouth, petting the pebbly, cold surface of a lizard’s back, or designing a fancy maze for a hamster. Animals can be great fun, but it’s important to know how to be safe when you’re with them. Both indoor animals and outdoor animals need to be treated kindly all the time. With a wild animal, being kind may mean staying far away so the animal doesn’t feel threatened and so you stay safe. Stepping outside can mean a world full of great animals to see – from squirrels in trees to birds in flight.

Although some of these animals may look cool or even cute, leave them alone. Don’t take a toy or bone away from a cat or dog or hold it out of reach of the animal. Kids often get scared of a dog they don’t know, especially if that dog is loud and doesn’t have an owner nearby. Running away can make the dog want to chase after you – even if it doesn’t want to hurt you, its instincts will tell it to chase. Don’t wave your arms around or make a lot of noise because these actions will only excite the dog.

If you are very afraid of a strange dog or a strange dog tries to bite or attack you, tell an adult as soon as possible. A final word on felines, also known as cats: Although most kids aren’t as scared of strange cats as they are of strange dogs, it’s still a good idea to stay away from cats you don’t know.
