Culling Pigs in Flu Fight, Egypt Angers Herders and Dismays U.N.

As a result, Egyptian pig farmers are overwhelmingly Christian. Although some of the country’s Christians are middle class or wealthy, the Christian farmers are generally poor. On Thursday, several urban pig farmers in Cairo said they see the government’s decision as just another expression of Egyptian Muslims’ resentment against Christians. The Egyptian government denied the incidents had sectarian overtones, saying they were each part of other disputes, including a fight over land. Barsoum Girgis, a 26-year-old pig farmer, lives in a poor neighborhood, Manshiet Nasser, built along the Mukatam cliffs on the eastern end of the city where most of the ramshackle, red-brick buildings were built illegally. 

Mr. Girgis makes his living through a combination of raising pigs and collecting garbage – two professions that are often tied together in a city where garbage collection can be an informal affair and where poor farmers rely on food scraps to feed their livestock. When he gets back to Manshiet Nasser, at around 9 a.m., he sorts the trash, putting aside what can be sold at the city’s booming scrap markets and what he can use as pig feed. Many of Cairo’s pig farmers live in similar conditions, sharing their small spaces in the teeming city with their animals. It remains unclear if the government will compensate the farmers for their losses. 

The Health Ministry originally said the farmers would be paid, but after many in Parliament disagreed, the ministry appeared to back down. Anxious over the reports of swine flu agree, with the government’s move. Many pig farmers say they do a valuable service for the rest of Cairo that will be recognized only if they stop picking up the trash.

The major way in which certain antibiotics cause reactions is by altering the normal microbial balance within the gastrointestinal tract Once the normal intestinal microfloral balance has been upset, certain bacteria multiply to abnormally large numbers. Certain antibiotics are directly toxic and do not alter the microbial balance within the gastrointestinal tract. These antibiotics should never be used in guinea pigs. Though injectable antibiotics can cause the problems described above, oral antibiotics are more often associated with them. Antibiotics should never be given to guinea pigs unless they are prescribed by a veterinarian. 

If oral or injectable antibiotics are prescribed, 2 1/2 cc of plain, white yogurt should be given orally to the treated animal morning and evening for the duration of the antibiotic therapy and for an additional 5-7 days afterward. Yogurt helps replace those beneficial intestinal bacteria that often perish during antibiotic treatment.

NiV is additionally equipped for causing illness in pigs and other household Aminals. There is no vaccine for humans or animals NiV infected. Laboratory diagnosis of a patient with a clinical history of NiV and Combination of tests. NiV can be prevented to avoid exposure to sick bats, pigs in endemic areas and stop drinking/ consuming palm sap of raw date. Fumigation play is most important role from prevention the NiV. 

Air treatment should be performed after handling the NiV infected patient.

Why Pigs Love Mud

Since few farmers provide their swine with mud pits, wallowing may be an animal welfare issue, researcher Marc Bracke of Wageningen University and Research Center wrote online in April in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science. Bracke reviewed 66 research papers on wallowing behavior in pigs, wild boar and other wallowing species. Many of the papers explored theories of why animals wallow, from sun protection to parasite removal to temperature regulation. The strongest motivation for wallowing seems to be temperature regulation, Bracke found. Pigs have few sweat glands, high body fat and a barrel-shaped torso that stores heat. 

Wallowing can lower a pig’s temperature by 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, making it more efficient than sweating would be even if pigs had lots of sweat glands. A mud bath is more cooling than a dip in cold water, Bracke wrote, because the water in mud evaporates off the pig’s coated body more slowly, allowing the animal to reap the cooling benefits of evaporation for longer. Even in cool weather, pigs still wallow, suggesting that the magic of mud doesn’t just lie in thermal regulation, Bracke wrote. Some wild pigs seem to use mud baths to scrape off parasites such as ticks and lice; they may also rub their scent glands around wallowing areas, possibly as a way of territory marking. Bracke warned, farmers shouldn’t think that they can replace wallowing with air-conditioned barns and anti-parasite medicines.

In addition to this, the feed has antibiotics and hormones routinely added to it to increase the size of the pigs and the amount of pigs that can be sold as meat. The incorrect feeding of pigs actually increases their need for antibiotics due to the health issues that arise. Legally the pig’s feed can contain the hair, skin, blood, intestines and hooves of other dead animals. Pigs are often still fed dead pig carcasses and even dead cow carcasses. Free range pigs which are fed their natural diet may grow a bit slower and be leaner than factory farmed pigs, but at the end of the day this is actually a benefit to the consumer who will be eating meat of a better fat and protein composition. 

Constant antibiotic use in factory-farmed pigs leads to antibiotic-resistant ‘super bugs’. Antibiotics in factory-farming are also used to increase the growth of the pigs. Factory-farmed pigs are routinely given antibiotics to increase their weight and so the meat is not contaminated with any pathogens. Despite the use of antibiotics, factory-farmed pigs are actually incubators for pathogens. One study found that about half of Dutch pig farmers, and 39% of Dutch factory-farmed pigs, were carriers of MRSA. 

In 2005 there were an estimated 20 incidents of MRSA per month in South African hospitals. Studies have suggested that grass-fed animals have higher levels of nutrients like vitamin A, D, E and K. More studies have been done on cattle than on pigs, but one can conclude that similar effects would occur on any farmed animal should it be allowed to live a healthy active life while eating its natural food source. Studies measuring the fatty acid content in the fat of wild pigs have shown that they tend to be higher in omega 6 fatty acids, perhaps due to their natural food source which sometimes contains nuts and acorns.

About 150 pigs, finished from 73kg liveweight on a low lysine:energy ration, have been monitored and feed use, weight gain and efficiency recorded. These results are being compared to 150 pigs finished on a commercial grower/finisher ration. MLC Stotfold figures suggest that pigs fed a low lysine ration should achieve daily liveweight gains of about 850g/day between 70 and 90kg, and 900g/day between 90 and 100kg. Easton Lodge results show tremendous variations in weight gain for individual pigs of between 83 and 1.15kg a pig a day for the low lysine ration. This compares to between 125g and 1.08kg a pig a day for the commercial grower/finisher ration. 

Overall, average weight gains for boars fed the low lysine ration appear to be lower than those for the commercial grower/finisher ration at 740g/day versus 777g/day. Whereas MLC had two pigs of equal weight in a pen, under commercial conditions the average weight variation has been about 15kg a pig in pen groups of 19. The culmination of these factors may account for the wide variation in daily lw gains of individual pigs, believes Mr Renolds. They couldnt check whether a dominant pig was restricting access to the feed bin – that could also have been a factor. The units nutritionist, Caroline Bevan, has been discussing ration formulation with MLC pig scientist, Pinder Gill.

The History of Guinea Pigs

In the beginning…. The common guinea pig was first domesticated as early as 5000 BC for food by tribes in the Andes region of South America,some thousands of years after the domestication of the South American camelids. 500 BC to 500 AD that depict guinea pigs have been unearthed in archaeological. People of ancient Peru worshipped animals and often depicted the guinea pig in their art. In 1532, selective breeding resulted in many varieties of domestic guinea pigs, which form the basis for some of the modern domestic breeds. Traditions involving guinea pigs are numerous; they are exchanged as gifts, used in customary social and religious ceremonies, and frequently referenced in spoken metaphors. 

Black guinea pigs are considered especially useful for diagnoses. Among the upper classes and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth I. The earliest known written account of the guinea pig dates from 1547, in a description of the animal from Santo Domingo. The guinea pig was first described in the West in 1554 by the Swiss. Imagine 16th century explorers arriving in south america and coming across Guinea Pigs, i am sure they would have been fascinated by their vocal language.

The types of antibiotics used by 110 pig farms in the Ashanti region and the handling practices of the farmers during disease management were assessed. Misdiagnosis and inadequate protection during antibiotic handling in the farms increased the risk of antibiotic resistance development and spread. The factors affecting antibiotic resistance development and spread are rife in pig farms in Ashanti region and appropriate education and veterinary interventions are needed to prevent resistant bacteria from becoming endemic in pork and pig farm communities. The use of antimicrobials in livestock and the husbandry practices of the farmers have been implicated as a cause of antibiotic resistance [2, 3]. Pig farmers use antibiotics for treatment, metaphylaxis, prophylaxis, and growth promotion in their farm animals [1, 2, 4]. 

The relatively larger farm animal populations consume more than half the antibiotics produced globally [4-6]. Diseases among pigs tend to reduce productivity by reducing feed conversion efficiency, slowing growth rate, and increasing mortalities. Because of the central role of antibiotics in disease management, a study of prevalent diseases and their management practices will aid in informing practical interventions that will aim at reducing the development and spread of antibiotic resistance as a result of antibiotic use in disease management. The absence of data on the type of antibiotics used and their handling practices on pig farms, especially in Ghana and Africa, is detrimental to our understanding of the factors leading to antibiotic resistance. As a step to encourage surveillance studies that shall help researchers track the factors influencing bacterial resistance, this study assessed the antibiotic types and their handling practices among pig farmers in disease management, allowing for recommendations to contain and prevent the development and spread of resistant bacteria through the food chain. 

Table 1: Types of antibiotics used by pig farmers in selected districts in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The types and handling practices of antibiotics used in both clinical and veterinary medicine have been implicated in the development and spread of resistant bacterial phenotypes that is affecting the therapeutic efficacy of current antibiotics and food security [1, 2, 7]. This study aimed at assessing the practices and types of antibiotics prevalent on Ghanaian pig farms, using the Ashanti region as a case study. The use of antibiotics intended for clinical use is advised against as a cause of the spread of antibiotic resistance from farms to communities and treatment centres [3, 7]. Hence, the use of mainly veterinary antibiotics for basically therapeutic purposes among the farms reduces the risks of antibiotics resistance development and spread. 

Nevertheless, the farms mainly depended on the tetracyclines, sulphadimidine, dihydrostreptomycin, and benzylpenicillin for the management of most diseases. The farmers depended more on fellow farmers than veterinarians for antibiotic knowledge, which resulted in the use of the same antibiotics and similar handling practices among farms in close proximity or within the same district. Errors in antibiotic handling and administration were common among the farms. Inadequate knowledge about antibiotics and their effect on the environment and public health among pig farmers made them use and dispose of antibiotics imprudently, increasing the risk of antibiotic resistance development and spread. Education on the importance of pro- and prebiotics, improved farm hygienic practices, strict laws regarding the sales, and use of antibiotics and increased veterinarian interventions on the farms are important to limit the occurrence of diseases and subsequent use of antibiotics.

Percy Pigs were first introduced in 1992 and come in several flavours, including a vegetarian option with green ears. A leaked government note suggested that Health Minister Jeremy Hunt is leading a review into sugary sweets and drinks. Unlimited refills of sugary drinks such as those sold at Nando’s could also be banned under the measure. Plans to prevent ‘licenced characters, cartoon characters and celebrities’ promoting junk food are being examined. This could include Percy Pig and Tony the Tiger, as well as characters like the Milky Bar Kid.

Compelling and I haven’t been able to eat pork since. Reading the book because I didn’t want to find myself giving up any. I think my oldest sister won’t eat pork, not sure if she read the. Since many of the glandular-type supplements are derived from pigs, I. haven’t used them. 

So I’m. mostly still just using vegetarian products for digestion and adrenal. I have used two adrenal cortex products, and they are both bovine. You’re getting too philosophical for me, sorry! If something helps me, I’ll take it. 

Once I’m mentally convinced that a. thing is unhealthy to eat, I become physically ill if I try to eat it,. It gives me just enough improvement to convince me I. need adrenal support, but not enough to actually feel any better. It should be easy to find ginseng products to replace.

The types of antibiotics used by 110 pig farms in the Ashanti region and the handling practices of the farmers during disease management were assessed. Misdiagnosis and inadequate protection during antibiotic handling in the farms increased the risk of antibiotic resistance development and spread. The factors affecting antibiotic resistance development and spread are rife in pig farms in Ashanti region and appropriate education and veterinary interventions are needed to prevent resistant bacteria from becoming endemic in pork and pig farm communities. The use of antimicrobials in livestock and the husbandry practices of the farmers have been implicated as a cause of antibiotic resistance [2, 3]. Pig farmers use antibiotics for treatment, metaphylaxis, prophylaxis, and growth promotion in their farm animals [1, 2, 4]. 

The relatively larger farm animal populations consume more than half the antibiotics produced globally [4-6]. Diseases among pigs tend to reduce productivity by reducing feed conversion efficiency, slowing growth rate, and increasing mortalities. Because of the central role of antibiotics in disease management, a study of prevalent diseases and their management practices will aid in informing practical interventions that will aim at reducing the development and spread of antibiotic resistance as a result of antibiotic use in disease management. The absence of data on the type of antibiotics used and their handling practices on pig farms, especially in Ghana and Africa, is detrimental to our understanding of the factors leading to antibiotic resistance. As a step to encourage surveillance studies that shall help researchers track the factors influencing bacterial resistance, this study assessed the antibiotic types and their handling practices among pig farmers in disease management, allowing for recommendations to contain and prevent the development and spread of resistant bacteria through the food chain.

Nevertheless, the farms mainly depended on the tetracyclines, sulphadimidine, dihydrostreptomycin, and benzylpenicillin for the management of most diseases. The farmers depended more on fellow farmers than veterinarians for antibiotic knowledge, which resulted in the use of the same antibiotics and similar handling practices among farms in close proximity or within the same district. Errors in antibiotic handling and administration were common among the farms. Inadequate knowledge about antibiotics and their effect on the environment and public health among pig farmers made them use and dispose of antibiotics imprudently, increasing the risk of antibiotic resistance development and spread. Education on the importance of pro- and prebiotics, improved farm hygienic practices, strict laws regarding the sales, and use of antibiotics and increased veterinarian interventions on the farms are important to limit the occurrence of diseases and subsequent use of antibiotics.

Chefs fight for the right to serve their pork pink

The Chartered Institute for Environmental Health, which represents food inspectors, highlights a recent report for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs which revealed that the number of human hepatitis E cases increased by 39% between 2011 and 2012. Critics insist that pink pork tastes better and is not a health risk, providing certain guidelines are followed. Over the summer a pop-up restaurant run by the Ginger Pig company, the upmarket chain of butchers in London, served more than 2,000 people a ribeye cut of pork shoulder taken off the bone and served pink without incident. Swift said there was a noticeable trend for restaurants to serve their pork on the pink side. She pointed to the increasing number of Spanish-influenced restaurants, such as the José tapas bar and its sister restaurant Pizarro, both in Bermondsey, London, which have won rapturous reviews for serving a speciality, Ibérico pork, presented extremely rare. 

José Pizarro, whose restaurant was voted best last year at both the Food and Travel Magazine Awards and the World Food Awards, said that when he first started out working in restaurants in London 14 years ago his employers thought he was mad for serving rare pork. Concerns about undercooked pork stretch back to the foot and mouth crisis of 2001 which was triggered by pigs being fed on scraps containing animal products, including that from their own species. Feeding pigs on scraps was banned in the UK as a result of the crisis. Morris said the reputation of the supplier was still no guarantee that the meat was not carrying hepatitis E. An investigation by the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency found hepatitis E in 49% of pigs in Scotland. 

The trend for pork to be be served pink intensified in 2011 when the US Department of Agriculture lowered the recommended minimum cooking temperature of pork by 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Chefs and food critics complain that inspectors have been over-zealous in applying the rules governing the cooking of meat. Morris defended the right of food inspectors to intervene in the debate.

The African Swine Fever Virus is a devastating pathogen that leads to fatal disease in domesticated swine. Scientists at the Roslin Institute led by Prof. Bruce Whitelaw have made an important advance for domestic pig health and welfare. Wild African pigs like warthogs do not get the disease. Researchers at Roslin have studied the genes associated with viral infection, and found what is likely a critical difference between the wild and domestic pigs. 

Using new gene editing technology, the change in wild pigs has been created in domestic pigs, and they will be tested for resistance to the virus this year. This example is one of may that is coming in animal, plant, and fungal genetic improvement through gene editing.

Best liquid Vitamin C for guinea pigs?

It sure sounds like you take very good care of your piggies! I have found that the Vit.C drops you get at the pet store are a little less than useless. Not only do the pigs HATE the taste of it, but once the drops hit the water, the chlorine neutralizes it anyway. They are chock full of nasty chemicals and preservatives. I use non-chlorinated water and mix Puritan’s Pride Vit.C crystals in a one-gallon container every morning. 

The pigs cannot taste it and this is human grade Vit.C. You can buy it over the internet only. Since you are already feeding Oxbow pellets, I’m sure you know that they already contain stabilized Vit.C in them. Whatever is lost by the pellets due to age or light exposure, will be made up by the daily Vit.C crystals in the water. Lastly, try to feed them veggies that contain lots of Vit.C like bell peppers, strawberries, etc. 

Keep trying that orange!! Sometimes, it takes awhile. Experiment with different types of oranges or try breaking off little tiny bits out of the center of the orange slice and put it to his lips to get him to taste it. I’m sure your piggies are thankful they have such a wonderful, responsible owner.

Gorgeous Guineas Piggy Problems

Skin problems are one of the most common reasons that guinea pigs require Veterinary treatment. Often guineas present with both fungal and parasitic problems at the same time and need treating for both. As soon as you see any signs of skin problems, don’t hang about – get a diagnosis from your Vet and get them treated as soon as possible. Guinea pigs have very sensitive skin and are prone to fungal and parasitic problems. Fungal skin problems are particularly common here in the UK. 

Guinea pigs are originally from Peru where the climate is warm and dry. Here, there is always moisture in the air – cold and damp in the winter, and hot and humid in the summer. Skin problems frequently occur where a guinea is stressed, ill, or has a depressed immune system. Sometimes skin problems in guineas are mis-diagnosed by Vets. Fungal skin conditions are often treated as if they were caused by Mites, despite the skin condition being presented. 

Guineas are then put through the pain of two or three Ivermectin injections, the problem isn’t cured and your guinea is still in a lot of pain and discomfort. Check out our Photo Gallery and see what some of the most common skin problems look like.

Characterization of Antimicrobial Resistance Determinants and Class 1 and Class 2 Integrons in Salmonella enterica spp., Multidrug-Resistant Isolates from Pigs

The present study characterizes the AMR determinants of 62 multi-drug resistant Salmonella enterica spp. Isolates from swine, which were obtained between 2004-2006, a major source of human salmonellosis. The AMR determinants were investigated by PCR, checking the presence of class 1 and class 2 integrons and 29 resistance genes. Genes sul1, blaTEM1-like, aadA2, tet(A), and dfrA12 were more prevalent and blaOXA-like/aadA1 were the most common. Four isolates, including S.

Guinea Pig Time – 6 week Shred

I am committing the next 6 weeks to demonstrate the simple effects of diet and exercise on body composition. Some of this is good advice, the majority however is rubbish. I am also scared at the continually growing rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, stroke and cancer in this country. I am hoping to show the 62+ % of Australians who are overweight or worse obese, that weight loss is achievable and a worthy cause. I will be recording my initial BMI, body composition. 

Diet: I will follow a low carb diet, eating 3 meals per day – no quantity restrictions. Exercise: I will follow my own High intensity Training workout plan, which will be between 40-45 mins max, no more than 4 times per week. I took the photo at the commencement of my 6 week adventure no turning back now ????. Related.

Antibiotics are used to help treat many different bacterial diseases of pigs, and can be given as injections, in the feed or as a spray. Please contact your veterinary surgeon if you are concerned with the health or welfare of any animal under your care. When used correctly, antibiotics have an important role in improving health and welfare of pigs. There are concerns that resistance or resistant bacteria could be transferred from animal to human health, and vice versa, and reduce the effectiveness of some antibiotic treatments. It is vital that antibiotics are used in the correct and appropriate manner to minimise this possibility.
