FDA Petitioned to Lower Ractopamine Limits for Meat, Review Health Impacts

Animal rights and food safety groups are petitioning the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to immediately lower the allowed residue limits for ractopamine – a controversial drug used to boost growth and leanness in meat production – and to study the drug’s effects on human health and animal welfare. The petition comes just days after the drug escalated trade tensions between the United States and Russia, which recently adopted a zero tolerance policy for ractopamine in imported meat, jeopardizing around $500 million in U.S. exports to the country. The petition contends that the FDA needs to do a more thorough job of assessing the potential harmful effects of ractopamine, a beta-agonist that mimics stress hormones and increases the rate at which animals convert feed into muscle.

The drug is fed to animals in the last few weeks, right up until slaughter. There is no mandatory withdrawal period for ractopamine, but when FDA approved the drug, it set safe maximum residue limits for ractopamine in meat products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service does very limited testing for the drug, but the agency has never found levels that violate the established MRLs, according to the data posted online. A recent test conducted by Consumer Reports of 240 pork samples found that about one in five were positive for very low levels of the drug – under 5 parts per billion, which is well under the FDA’s established MRL of 50 ppb for pork.

Though ractopamine is approved as safe in more than two dozen countries, including Canada and Brazil, there is still sharp disagreement over the safety of the drug. The European Food Safety Authority has determined the science backing ractopamine is insufficient to determine what amount, if any, of the drug is safe for human consumption. China, Russia, and others have expressed similar worries and ban the drug from being used by their own meat producers. While it was approved as safe by the FDA more than a decade ago, the petition claims the agency did not thoroughly review all of the potentially negative consequences of the drug. Animal welfare advocates are particularly concerned about the number of pigs that have reportedly had adverse reactions to the drug.

OUTBREAK: Chinese Pigs Infected With Swine Flu

Last week, China reported its first ever outbreak of African swine fever at a farm in Shenyang. Chinese pig-related stocks then slumped after the world’s biggest pork producer and consumer reported its first ever case of highly contagious hemorrhagic fever. In Hong Kong, WH Group Ltd., the world’s largest pork company, retreated 2.1 percent. Muyuan Foodstuff Co. dropped 8.7 percent, Guangdong Wens Foodstuffs Group Co.

fell 6.3 percent and Tangrenshen Group Co. declined 4 percent in the aftermath of the announcement of the outbreak, according to Bloomberg. The outbreak of the African swine fever is spurring a cull, a ban on transportation, and a quarantine for the neighboring areas. The hemorrhagic disease is highly contagious and mortality rates can be as high as 100 percent, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health. China had more than 433 million pigs at the start of the year, more than half of the world’s total food/pork pigs.

The first case of African Swine Fever virus in China was reported on Friday, August 3, according to the Swine Health Information Center. The outbreak was located in the northeast part of the country, in the city Shenyang, district of Shenbei New, in the province Liaoning, SHIC said in a news release. This is a swine dense area of 130 miles along the North Korean border. According to Pork Business, The Global Agricultural Information Network reports that pork producers and animal quarantine officials in Bulgaria are currently monitoring for African swine fever, as recent outbreaks of the virus have occurred just over the border with Romania, and elsewhere in the region. Pork remains the most widely produced and consumed meat in Bulgaria.

Guinea Pig Sounds And The Meanings Behind Them

Guinea pigs express their feelings and thoughts not only with their behavior and body language but also by making different sounds. The most common situations are when your are stroking your pet or it is groomed by another guinea pig. If your guinea pig is cooing, then it is a sign of being content. Naturally, cooing is a sound that mother guinea pig does to her babies. Rumble is a high-pitched vibration sound that male guinea pig produces in attempts to woo a female.

Rumbling is usually accompanied with the male guinea pig wiggling his hips around the female. If you hear that a guinea pig is making a high-pinched noise, then it is feeling frightened or is in pain. Usually you can hear a squeak when a young guinea pig is taken away from a mother. Guinea pigs can start to chatter to communicate to other guinea pigs or people to stay away. Guinea pig who is chirping is associated with being stressed.

The noise resembles a bird chirp and is most commonly heard when a baby guinea pig communicates to the mother that it is hungry or wants to suckle from her. If you hear your guinea pig growling, the best way to cam it down is to pet it and to speak in a soft manner.

Health Facts About Guinea Pigs

By Kevin Wright, DVM, DABVP. Guinea pigs do not need vaccinations but they do need a preventive health program from an experienced veterinarian. A daily dose of at least 90 mg of vitamin C and an appropriate diet is an essential part of the guinea pig’s health program. I recommend that a guinea pig’s feces be tested for internal parasites before he is handled a lot or introduced to other guinea pigs. Guinea pigs may secrete a white fluid from their eyes that gets rubbed into the fur as part of grooming, and this may be hard to distinguish from an actual infection of the eye.

Guinea pig medicine is still developing, and sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose and treat what is wrong with an ill guinea pig. Veterinary care costs about the same as a cat or dog for some procedures, but can be a lot more costly for certain surgeries and other treatments due to the specialized equipment and medications that guinea pigs require. Some guinea pigs may need filings every four to six weeks or other procedures, such as tooth extraction, in order to do well. Many guinea pigs develop a swollen lump on their skin that may sometimes rupture and ooze gray to white granular material. Male and female guinea pigs develop mammary tumors, which are growths between their hind legs, usually involving the nipple.

Guinea pigs frequently get bladder infections, particularly if their litter boxes are not cleaned daily or if they are overweight. Guinea pigs can become overweight with unlimited pellets and little room to roam and play. Spend at least 30 minutes daily encouraging an obese guinea pig to walk and explore a guinea pig-proofed room.

Guinea Pigs make fantastic pets for those people limited by space, and those that love an affectionate and social companion. Regular health check-ups are the cornerstone of a preventative health program for your Guinea Pig. A regular visit to the vet will help detect illness early and you can find out about the latest options in Guinea Pig medicine. Parasite control Parasites can be a problem in many pets but generally Guinea Pigs are lucky when it comes to creepy crawlies. Guinea pigs have teeth that continually grow hence overgrown incisors and molars can occur.

Guinea Pigs can start breeding at 6-8 weeks of age and may be desexed at 5-6mths of age. A female guinea pig should have her first litter before 6 months of age. Guinea Pigs have continuously growing nails that need to be trimmed regularly. There are a variety of hutches and cages available to house Guinea Pigs. Generally Guinea Pigs should be kept indoors as warmer weather can cause heat stroke.

Indoor cages should allow at least 0.5 square metres of floor space per guinea pig. Staff at Littlefriend’s Farm in Pontypridd, South Wales, have now secured Sooty’s pen – and begun looking for new homes for his guinea pigs.

Guinea Pig Size Guide

Guinea pigs are somewhat unusual among pet rodents because they grow much bigger than their furry cousins such as mice, rats, and hamsters. At birth, a guinea pig will generally measure around 8-10 cm. You should expect some natural variation in size between the animals in a litter, with some bigger than others. A baby guinea pig measures just 8-10 cm and easily fits into the palm of your hand. Guinea pigs grow very rapidly, and will double in size to around 15-20 cm after just 8 weeks.

To measure the size of your guinea pig, place it on a flat surface and place a ruler or tape measure next to it, running parallel to its body. If you buy your guinea pigs from a pet store, it isn’t uncommon for them to be a little unsure about the age of the animals they stock. In these cases, it is extremely helpful to be able to use your knowledge of guinea pig sizes to estimate their true age. Guinea pigs’ relatively large size makes them great pets for children, as they are much less likely to drop them than they might with smaller animals. Another benefit of their size is that they are less likely to crawl into small, hard-to-reach spaces – something that rodents are renowned for!

If your guinea pig’s size is slightly above or below the numbers given here then you shouldn’t worry, as all cavies will vary somewhat from the average. If your pet is significantly bigger or smaller than these sizes, you should take it for a checkup at your local vet, as it may be a sign of a physical problem.

Genetically Modified Pigs Resistant to PRRS

Imagine how much producers could save if they had swine that were resistant to one of the most costly porcine diseases. Laboratory Equipment just shared amazing news that is sure to change the swine production industry forever. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute have produced pigs that are resistant to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome. Otherwise known as PRRS, this disease is considered one of the most costly animal diseases. This condition costs the swine industry in the U.S.

and Europe about $2.5 billion annually in lost revenue. This virus affects pigs by using a receptor called CD163, which is found on their cells’ surface. The researchers removed a small section of the CD163 gene using gene-altering techniques. They focused on the section of the receptor to which the virus attaches. This was a collaborative effort with Genus PLC, a global leader in animal genetics.

Tests done with the PRRS virus show that the genetically-altered pigs do not become infected. Visit our company website for swine industry jobs in your state, industry news, and other animal nutrition updates. Follow #ContinentalSearch on Facebook and LinkedIn for swine jobs in your area and other opportunities in the animal nutrition industry.

I got a wee baby guinea pig from the pet store, and I was told he had

I got a wee baby guinea pig from the pet store, and I was told he had deformities. I’ve never known a guinea pig to do that, I know it’s a bad sign for a rabbit. I’m going to get a vet at my work to take a look at him if I can this Sunday. I’ll also find out how old he needs to be to get him neutered at the same time… cos I’ve never had a guinea pig neutered, but I know you can do it.

I’ve only ever had females, so this is new to me! :-). I’ve taken a video of him walking, but it was on a couch chair so it’s a bit slanted anyway, he doesn’t appear to be in any pain. I just think the sound of ‘fused hips’ sounds awfully painful to me.

Spain has more pigs than people

The succulent meat features on many a dinner table and tapas spread, and the cured hams are renowned worldwide. Even as far back as Roman times, Spain’s hams were spoken of highly, and when the Romans lost control of the region, the Goths who followed gave pigs special protection. Now the relationship between Spaniards and their pigs is more tense than usual. The number of pigs in Spain has surpassed that of human citizens – 50 million animals compared to 46.5 million people. The sheer volume of waste is why animal agriculture is the fourth leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions in Spain, following transportation, electricity generation, and industry.

As ham production becomes more industrialized throughout Spain, standards have fallen, raising questions about food safety. The authenticity of production methods has been challenged as well, particularly that of the famous jamón ibérico de bellota, which retails for hundreds of Euros per kilogram and is made by letting blackfoot pigs roam in a oak forest for their final few months of life, foraging for acorns. Formal oversight is lacking, which has allowed producers to cut corners, supplementing the acorn diet with animal feed and shortening the mandatory three-year curing period. These unfortunate problems are indicative of a broader global crisis when it comes to meat production. The fact is that inhabitants of wealthier developed nations eat far too much meat and are not willing to pay enough money for it, both of which are contributing factors to the over-industrialization of animal agriculture.

Significantly reducing meat consumption levels should be a priority for policy-makers worldwide, as it would resolve a host of issues over time, from cleaner water, lower emissions, and freeing up land, to health concerns about processed meats and the ethical implications of raising animals in unnaturally tight conditions. Spain’s pig problem is one that every other nation will soon face if we keep eating meat the way we do.

Pigs, Hogs, and Drug Testing

At the beginning, a group of healthcare providers start utilizing a new or newly discovered CPT or HCPCS code for a test, procedure, or product. The enthusiasm of early adopters over a clinically beneficial test gives way to more and more providers pursuing the opportunity, some inevitably driven more by profit opportunity than clinical value. As the volume of claims grow, the insurance companies begin to audit for overutilization, lack of medical necessity, and excessive testing. In addition to the heightened scrutiny of claims, providers also find the reimbursement drops as the volume of the testing exapnds. A subset of providers or marketers try grow their claim volume even more aggressively, trying to cash in on a profit opportunity that they perceive to be time-limited.

As a healthcare lawyer dealing with reimbursement disputes over the past two decades, I could rattle off dozens examples of this phenomenon:diagnostic tests from nerve conduction studies and electromyography to genetic testing. Over the last eight years or so, drug testing through urine toxicology screening has been the most pervasive example of this phenomenon. Beginning around 2007, interest began to grow around the use of urine toxicology screening for injured workers being treated for pain by workers compensation providers. Addiction treatment providers have embraced urine tox screening. In the Sky Labs case, Cigna has alleged that its payments in excess of $32m for UDT were fraudulent because the labs routinely waived co-pay waivers and also because the labs induced kickbacks, by allocating investment opportunities to drug rehabs based on the volume of urine tox samples referred.

Providers would do well to take a cue from the Sky Labs allegations. Labs, addiction treatment providers, and physicians that manage all three are likely to do just fine.

Guinea Pig Facts

We’re guinea pigs in global microplastic experiment

One of the main problems with plastics is that although we may only need them fleetingly – seconds in the case of microbeads in personal care products, or minutes as in plastic grocery bags – they stick around for hundreds of years. We’ve all seen the gruesome images of a sea turtle killed by a plastic bag, or the array of bottle caps, toothbrush fragments, and other plastic items found in the stomach of an albatross carcass. Much of the hundreds of millions of tons of plastic waste in our oceans is made up of microplastics. I’m an environmental epidemiologist with a research group that studies exposure to chemicals commonly found in consumer products, including plastics, and how they affect human reproduction and development. There are plastics and then the chemicals that are added to them.

There are numerous types of commonly used plastics with differing structures, properties, and chemical additives to make them stronger, more flexible, more rigid, more resilient to UV, or to prevent microbial growth or the spread of fire. Over the past couple of decades concern has grown over the potential danger to human health posed by unavoidable exposures to plastic additives. Certain chemicals – phthalates, bisphenol A, flame retardants – added to plastics to provide beneficial qualities may in turn disrupt hormones or other important functions following exposure. To date, most of the concerns for human health has focused on these additives in the plastics but not the plastics themselves. These factors include size, shape, type of plastic, surface properties, biopersistence, and the presence of chemical additives or other toxic agents the microplastics may have picked up the environment.

We can also reduce single-use plastics, introduce effective recycling programs on a global scale, and implement policies at the national level, like phasing out microbeads or banning certain additives, or locally at the city, county, or state level. There is no question that synthetic plastics have made our lives safer and more convenient over the past half-century or so – keeping foods fresh, providing crucial parts for cars and aircraft, preventing electronics from starting or spreading fires, contributing to medical treatment and care, and helping deliver clean water to parts of the world that would not otherwise have access.

From Pigs to Peacocks, What’s Up With Those ‘Emotional-Support Animals’?

Concern is mounting over people’s asserted need for emotional support animals, as more seek accommodations for their pets and livestock in places not designed for bird or beast, said Phyllis Erdman, chair of the American Psychological Association’s section on human-animal interaction. Still, there’s anecdotal evidence, experts say, that some of the animals provide comfort to some people. More and more people are taking emotional support animals into places not meant for pets. It’s incredibly easy to have any critter classified as an emotional support animal, said Erdman, who led a symposium on the topic last week at the American Psychological Association’s annual meeting, in San Francisco. Mood disorders like depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are usually the reasons cited for assigning someone an emotional support animal, Erdman said.

The animals don’t have to be certified or trained, and there are no federal restrictions on the species, size or weight of an animal in an emotional support role, she added. Emotional support animals are allowed under federal housing law as a reasonable accommodation for a disabled person, she noted. These are working animals certified to pull wheelchairs, lead the blind, detect low blood sugar in diabetics, or remind people with bipolar disorder to take their medication. Some websites now act as letter mills for people who want their pet named as an emotional support animal, according to Erdman. Ochoa added, anecdotal reports have shown that the animals can provide benefit to some people.

To maintain the legitimacy of emotional support animals, Ochoa urges patients to know their animals well and consider how they will respond to other people in spaces that are usually off-limits to animals. The American Kennel Club has more about emotional support animals.

The project began with the research team attempting to prove that it could grow one animal’s organ cells within a different species of animal. Then they inserted rat stem cells that contained a gene for the pancreas into these mutant embryos. Once implanted, the stem cells developed into a rat pancreas within a mouse embryo that ultimately grew into a healthy mouse with a normal lifespan. Unexpectedly to the researchers, the mice delivered bonus organs after the injection of rat stem cells: gallbladders, which are present in mice but not in rats. After the rat-mice experiments, the team turned its focus to human stem cells.

They began by generating different types of human induced pluripotent stem cells – when adult cells are turned back into stem cells – and inserting them into pig embryos. Human cells within some of the embryos had begun to specialize and turn into tissue precursors, they discovered. The success rate and level of human stem cell contributions in pigs was much lower than with the rat-mouse chimeras. Though the experiment with human stem cells was interrupted at 28 days, it remains the first reported case in which human stem cells have begun to grow within another species. Hyun, who worked on developing international guidelines for the International Society for Stem Cell Research, said the Salk Institute researchers appear to be staying within international ethical boundaries.

The chimeras used in biomedical research have been created, typically, by putting the human cells in at a later stage of development: at the fetal stage or even after birth. In these new experiments, human cells are being introduced at a much earlier stage of development, when the cells are still sorting themselves out within the embryo.

In pigs infected with HRV at PTD10, there was a uniform decrease in the function and/or frequencies of natural killer cells, plasmacytoid dendritic cells, and CD103+ and apoptotic mononuclear cells and altered gene expression profiles of intestinal epithelial cells. In pilot experiments, to evaluate the effects of protein malnutrition on immune function and enteric infection, we infected pigs with HRV at 3 and 10 days after HIFM transplantation to evaluate protein malnutrition/HRV infection effects in the context of developing and established intestinal microbiomes, respectively. The neonatal pigs infected with HRV at 3 days after HIFM transplantation had poor health, high mortality rates, and enhanced HRV shedding/diarrhea, unlike pigs infected at 10 days after HIFM transplantation or germfree pigs. The GF pigs on the protein-deficient diet became stunted compared to their sufficient-diet counterparts; however, stunting and edema were less evident in GF pigs than in HIFM-transplanted protein-deficient pigs. Protein deficiency differentially affects SOX9, CgA, MUC2, villin, and PCNA gene mRNA levels of IECs.SOX9, MUC2, villin, PCNA, and CgA gene mRNA levels were lower in jejunal IECs of protein-deficient pigs than in those of sufficient HIFM/HRV-infected pigs, as demonstrated by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR.

However, only MUC2 and villin mRNA levels were lower in protein-deficient pigs than in protein-sufficient non-HRV-inoculated pigs, while CgA, PCNA, and SOX9 mRNA levels were higher. Protein deficiency decreased the frequencies of natural killer cells among intestinal and splenic mononuclear cells and significantly decreased the NK function of splenic MNCs. Similarly, frequencies of intestinal plasmacytoid dendritic cells and CD103+ MNCs were significantly lower in protein-deficient pigs than in protein-sufficient pigs. Stunting of the pigs on the deficient diet that were transplanted with sHIFM or dHIFM was indistinguishable from that of pigs transplanted with dHIFM. Likewise sHIFM failed to rescue pigs on a deficient diet from stunting.

Because protein-deficient HIFM-transplanted pigs with or without HRV were more stunted than protein-deficient GF pigs infected with HRV, we conclude that the altered microbiota and not HRV infection alone plays a major role in the development of stunting in protein deficiency. Finally, our observations suggest that the intestinal microbiota enhances epithelial proliferation and IEC barrier function, which is evident from the higher PCNA and villin mRNA levels in HIFM-transplanted pigs than in GF pigs. In the early 1990s there were just 198 Mangalica pigs left and a Hungarian animal geneticist became alarmed. There are even a few specialized farmers raising Mangalica pigs in the United States today. Eating MangalicaThe Mangalica is one of the fattiest pigs in the world; on average 65-70% of the carcass is fat, and lean meat is only 30 – 35% of the carcass, compared to over 50% in modern breeds.

Which Is The Best Pet For You?

What really does work well is to take a look at the temperament, housing, space, climate, food and socialization needs of a chinchilla and guinea pig each in turn. Unlike guinea pigs, they don’t usually vocalize, which some pet owners prefer. Chinchillas do best with a diet of chinchilla pellets with the very occasional treat of raisins, which they absolutely love. In captivity, the best strategy is to house a single breeding pair of guinea pigs together. As with chinchillas, the first guinea pigs may have initially showed up in captivity for their nutritional or medicinal value, but like with chinchillas, guinea pigs are also very cute.

Owners also say pet pigs often develop very unique personalities just like cats and dogs! Escaped pet guinea pigs can be very tough to recapture! As with chinchillas, guinea pigs have teeth that grow continuously. As you read through all of the information here, it is easy to see why the guinea pig or chinchilla better pet debate is a still unresolved! It is a very tough call to make!

Needs near-constant companionship, so it is best to get two pigs. A guinea pig is generally considered to be a better pet choice for families with younger kids. Once you do make your decision, we would love to hear about it! Please post in the comments section here to tell us whether you chose a guinea pig or chinchilla or another type of pet, and why, so we can all celebrate your new addition with you!

Questions and Answers on African Swine Fever

African swine fever is a severe viral infection which exclusively affects pigs and is fatal to them. No. The African swine fever virus only infects pigs. Clinical signs differ a great deal! In domestic pigs and European feral pigs, the infection leads to severe but unspecific general symptoms such as fever, weakness, loss of appetite, impaired coordination and breathing problems.

The Ordinance on the Protection against Swine Fever and African Swine Fever sets the legal framework on controlling the disease. In case of an outbreak among domestic pig herds, all pigs of the affected herd would have to be culled and safely disposed of. Both domestic and feral pig herds would be tested in great detail in these zones. It would then be prohibited to move domestic pigs into and out of this area. Further hygiene measures for disease control would be applied to get diagnostic clarification on general fever infections, abortions or an increased number of fallen animals in pig holdings.

Cooperation of pig farmers is vital to a functioning early-warning system. Fresh, frozen, salted meat, smoked meat and sausage products can be infectious for domestic and feral pigs for a long time. In order to prevent the incursion of animal diseases, it is prohibited to bring back meat, meat products and milk from non-EU countries. Revision of Council Directive 2008/120/EG laying down minimum standards for the protection of pigs.

Health 2

If he is eating and is passing urine at least in a decent dribble and is not obviously in pain, I call the vet and usually we talk about the surrounding health signs and most often put him on Ammonil, a urine acidifier, which dissolves the calculi quickly and in a few days the urine stream is usually strong and the pig back to normal. If these conditions exist and he does not seem sick in any acute manner, we usually start by discussing the pig and his history with the vet and if he agrees, we start treating him for ulcers immediately. With an arthritic pig, often the first medication a vet will suggest is for pain relief. NOT SO. Never give any drug without the vets OK.

Many common human drugs are unsafe for pigs. Not the local sanctuary or the man who wrote a book on breeding and selling pigs, nor the lady in Montana who posted a sick pig to the chat list last week…CALL The VET. If he is not available, explain that you have an emergency and ask for a call back. If its urgent load the pig and drive to the vet and wait for him to see you. People constantly say, oh you know way more than my vet about sick pigs.

Before moving any of these pigs consult the vet and describe carefully the symptoms and ask how to safely get him in or get medication to him. I cant get the pig to the vet, can’t get the pig to eat, can’t get the pills into the pig Start with I must instead of I can’t and the way to do it will come much faster and the help you need will be easier to find. Pigs are subtle in their communications but a pig who dies without warning is a rarity. Start developing the vet relationship while the pig is young. So if you find a vet who has the willingness to see your pig, appreciate him.

Feeding Small Grains to Pigs

Since Darrell raises and feeds his own hogs he could grow a small grain like barley and feed that to his pigs allowing him to plant a diverse cover crop mix following July harvest. Since Darrell also raises hogs, he began to think of how he would not only use is barley as a cover crop, but also as a grain crop to feed his hogs. Small grains, like the barley Darrell is growing, are planted in rotation with corn and soybean, which keep a continuous living cover to help protect soil and water quality. Along with environmental benefits, small grains included in corn/soybean rotations are found to reduce costs, improving yields of corn and soybeans which provide a better cash flow. Pigs have been primarily fed corn-soybean grain-based diets, but producers more and more are seeking alternative grains that can also meet all the nutrient requirements for their pigs.

Swine diets vary for different stages of development from gestating sows to finisher pigs. Small grains are cereal grains such as barley, oats, rye, triticale, and wheat. Small grains, depending on the grain, are higher in crude protein, digestible phosphorus, and lysine than corn, but are lower in energy content. Small grains are feed alternatives to corn and soybeans that have been useful feedstuffs for pigs. When well balanced small grains are able to take the place of corn and soybeans in swine diets, they provide an opportunity to reduce diet costs farmers face.

As the new Swine and Poultry Coordinator at PFI, I hope to work with farmers on the idea of incorporating small grains in the diet rations of their pigs. Farmers have expressed their interest in incorporating small grains in their pig rations, but lack information on how much to include.

Esther the Wonder Pig diagnosed with cancer

Esther the Wonder Pig may be responsible for saving the lives of other large animals, but now she is facing her own medical battle. Famed for inspiring the Esther Scanner Fundraiser, the 295-kg social media starlet will undergo surgery within a week following the discovery a suspicious mass on her belly. Launched in April, the Esther Scanner Fundraiser was supposed to raise C$650,000 for a Pegaso CT scanner, the first of its kind in Canada. Thanks to Esther, it surpassed its target by more than C$25,000 by July 1. Veterinarians at the Ontario Veterinary College recommended a CT scan to better diagnose the pig’s condition, but told them a scanner able to accommodate an animal of her size was not available in Canada.

Further, transporting Esther to the United States would require a three-week quarantine upon her return. Esther-who turned six in July-recovered on her own and was able to forgo the scan. Her owners decided to launch the fundraiser to save other large animal owners future distress. They appealed to Esther’s 1.5 million social media followers to do it. The new machine-which would allow for diagnostic imaging for pigs, standing horses, and other large animals-will have a permanent home at OVC in September and is expected to fill a gap in large animal care across Canada.

According to the Toronto Star, the machine was temporarily installed this month to allow Esther to be scanned. Reactions to Esther’s medical update on Facebook and Twitter were filled with supportive comments and heartwarming words from fans and cancer survivors around the world.

Do Guinea Pigs Need to be Spayed/Neutered?

Surgery of any kind in guinea pigs is still considered fairly risky. It’s important for us, as owners, to address every surgery with consideration of dangers and benefits when spaying or neutering your guinea pig. Guinea pigs don’t need to be routinely spayed and neutered unless there is an underlying reason – the most obvious being to prevent pregnancy. While de-sexing other animals usually has a positive effect on behavior, guinea pigs are the exception. Spaying a female guinea pig is usually considered more risky than neutering a male because it is more invasive.

Guinea pigs that develop problems with the reproductive organs may need to be spayed regardless. Guinea pigs are more susceptible to anesthesia reactions, stress, and infections. A pig in pain may not show interest in guinea pig food or grass hay, which is essential for digestion, making it even more challenging to prevent GI stasis. Guinea pigs cannot maintain their core body temperature well during surgery; the large surface area to volume ratio of small rodents increases this risk. An experienced exotic vet should monitor a guinea pig’s temperature, along with other vitals, during and after surgery.

An exotic vet is absolutely essential when it comes to spaying or neutering your guinea pig. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to spaying or neutering your guinea pig.

Local Farming and The Fight for Quality Food

In most cities, it’s possible to meet local farmers at farmers markets and obtain naturally raised meat and vegetables. We’ve been meaning to learn more about local farms and their food production methods. On Saturday, we joined the Livin’ Paleo in Boston group on a visit to Green Meadows Farm in Hamilton, Massachusetts. Green Meadows Farm was founded by General George S. Patton and is still owned by one of his heirs.

We were delighted to meet Diana at the Ancestral Health Symposium, and have looked forward to visiting her farm. The farm is actually an organic vegetable farm, and the animals are used to clear and fertilize vegetable plots. Currently only 20 acres of the 230 acre farm are in cultivation. The rest has been occupied by forest, or is too wet to farm. Joel Salatin is a hugely entertaining family farmer in Virginia who has deservedly become famous.

The regulatory and legal climate is actively hostile to local farms. Shou-Ching and I strongly support the liberation of food production and consumption from repressive regulations, and recommend checking out your local farms. I know we have a number of farmers among our readers; please, let us know if there is anything we can do to promote your businesses.

Mange mites can live off the host only a day or two because they are susceptible to environmental Moderate ambient temper conditions. Life Cycle The life cycle of the mite takes approximately 10 to 14 days to complete. The female mites burrow into the outer layer of skin using mechanical destruction and salivary secretions. After developing through a larval and two nymphal stages, the mites will reach adulthood in 6 to 9 days. Edu Mites are primarily spread through direct animal contact.

Species of mites affect a Different of livestock hosts. Pigs can respond to a mite infestation one of two ways, the hypersensitive form or the hyperkeratotic form. Mites are usually present in very large numbers in these areas. Figure 3 Regardless of the form of mange, mites can be diagnosed by scraping the periphery of the affected area and viewing the scrapings under oil immersion through a microscope. The label recommended dosage for these products will kill 100 percent of adult mites and immature forms.

Suis.1 Twentytwo pigs that had naturally occurring mange mite infestations were used in the trial. All pigs proved negative for mites in the 7 to 28day posttreatment period.
