Pigs will follow any player who is carrying a carrot, carrot on a stick, potato, or beetroot, and will stop following if the player moves over approximately 8 blocks away from the pig. Icon Achievement In-game description Actual requirements Availability Xbox points earned Trophy type Xbox PS Bedrock Nintendo When Pigs Fly Fly a pig off a cliff Be riding a pig when it hits the ground with a fall distance greater than 5. 12w07a Pigs now have new AI. 1.2.4 No longer possible to ride baby pigs with saddles. Saddled pigs in minecarts behave strangely: If the player mounts the pig and uses the opposite controls for direction, the speed of the minecart will be boosted to the same speed as a minecart travelling on powered rails. Transport losses include animals that are dead on arrival at the plant, pigs that are injured, and pigs which are not obviously injured but unwilling or unable to walk. The objective of this research was to assess the health of non-ambulatory, non-injured pigs relative to control pigs at the processing plant by looking at a range of measures, including complete blood chemistry, anatomy, and pathology to determine potential factors associated with pigs going down.

Data were collected from NANI and control pigs at five plants in the midwest USA. Feet and legs and internal organs were inspected and the severity of the pathology scored. Hoof and pad problems did not differ overall between control and NANI pigs, however the percentage of severe foot problems was greater in NANI compared with control pigs at plants A and E. The percentage of total ulcers, rhinitis, and empty stomachs differed between control and NANI pigs at individual plants, but not overall. Titers to swine influenza virus H1N1 and H3N2 and porcine circovirus were lower among NANI compared with control pigs.

More NANI pigs were positive for SIV H1N1 and H3N2 compared with control pigs. Blood hematology, chemistry, and pathology indicate a large difference between NANI and controls pigs. No single health problem was higher among NANI pigs compared to plant-matched control pigs.

Expert tips on how to apply for a farm tenancy

Creating a new farm tenancy agreement is a major decision for both potential tenants and landlords, and the application process takes up a lot of time, effort and energy. To be successful, applicants must be prepared to showcase their skills, practical farming ability, business experience, financial sustainability and sound judgement. Any new tenancy offered by a landlord will be a Farm Business Tenancy governed by the Agricultural Tenancies Act 1995. See also: The benefits of becoming a council farm tenant. Finding a tenancy When looking for farms it is important to have an open mind and not be limited to one area; be prepared to move.

The farming press, either local or national, is the best place to look for farm tenancy opportunities. The Tenant Farmers Association advertises known tenancy opportunities on its website for members to access. Viewing the farm Make the most of the viewing day for the farm by assessing the land and buildings and getting a good feel for the place. Go back for a second viewing, think about which farming system you will adopt and what suits the farm, and ask yourself what improvements you will need to make and how much they might cost. You will need to decide on an appropriate business proposition that will succeed and suit the farm and is permitted within the terms of the tenancy agreement you will draw up with the landlord.

You should always prepare a budget, cash flow and balance sheet to demonstrate the viability of the business and show your current assets, how you would finance taking over the farm and any desirable improvements you intend to make. Q. A lot of people admire how we farm but do not believe we can take it to the next level.

Bloat In Guinea Pigs Is Deadly

All animals have needs which, as an owner, you have a legal duty to meet under the Animal Welfare Act* and guinea pigs are no exception. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 in England and Wales and the Animal Health and WelfareAct 2006 2 Your guide to keeping guinea pigs healthy and happy Environment - the need for somewhere suitable to live This may sound obvious but it is simply not enough to have a small hutch at the end of the garden with your guinea pigs crammed in like battery hens. 4 Your guide to keeping guinea pigs healthy and happy Diet - the need for a good diet and fresh water Guinea pigs’ wild relatives spend much of their time above ground eating grass and similar foods. Guinea pigs often pick out the bits they like and leave the rest, leading to an unbalanced diet and some guinea pigs may eat too much and become overweight. Friends Guinea pigs need the company of other guinea pigs and shouldn’t be kept alone. 7 Caring for guinea pigs Companionship - the need for social contact with the right animals Guinea pigs are very social animals which means they need contact with their own kind. These are very different animals and rabbits can seriously injure guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs are also prey animals which means they will be fearful of many other animals like cats, dogs, foxes and birds of prey. You need to make sure that your guinea pigs can hide from and avoid such animals and be totally secure when they do tuck themselves out of sight. 8 Your guide to keeping guinea pigs healthy and happy Health - protection from illness and injury and providing treatment when needed On the whole guinea pigs are very healthy pets when cared for correctly. 9 Caring for guinea pigs Parasites Guinea pigs can pick up parasites. 10 Your guide to keeping guinea pigs healthy and happy Grooming Long-haired guinea pigs should be gently groomed every day to prevent matted fur.

Health Facts About Guinea Pigs

By Kevin Wright, DVM, DABVP. Guinea pigs do not need vaccinations but they do need a preventive health program from an experienced veterinarian. A daily dose of at least 90 mg of vitamin C and an appropriate diet is an essential part of the guinea pig’s health program. I recommend that a guinea pig’s feces be tested for internal parasites before he is handled a lot or introduced to other guinea pigs. Guinea pigs may secrete a white fluid from their eyes that gets rubbed into the fur as part of grooming, and this may be hard to distinguish from an actual infection of the eye.

Guinea pig medicine is still developing, and sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose and treat what is wrong with an ill guinea pig. Veterinary care costs about the same as a cat or dog for some procedures, but can be a lot more costly for certain surgeries and other treatments due to the specialized equipment and medications that guinea pigs require. Some guinea pigs may need filings every four to six weeks or other procedures, such as tooth extraction, in order to do well. Many guinea pigs develop a swollen lump on their skin that may sometimes rupture and ooze gray to white granular material. Male and female guinea pigs develop mammary tumors, which are growths between their hind legs, usually involving the nipple.

Guinea pigs frequently get bladder infections, particularly if their litter boxes are not cleaned daily or if they are overweight. Guinea pigs can become overweight with unlimited pellets and little room to roam and play. Spend at least 30 minutes daily encouraging an obese guinea pig to walk and explore a guinea pig-proofed room.

Guinea Pigs can start breeding at 6-8 weeks of age and may be desexed at 5-6mths of age. A female guinea pig should have her first litter before 6 months of age. Guinea Pigs have continuously growing nails that need to be trimmed regularly. There are a variety of hutches and cages available to house Guinea Pigs. Generally Guinea Pigs should be kept indoors as warmer weather can cause heat stroke.

Indoor cages should allow at least 0.5 square metres of floor space per guinea pig. Staff at Littlefriend’s Farm in Pontypridd, South Wales, have now secured Sooty’s pen – and begun looking for new homes for his guinea pigs.

Guinea Pig Size Guide

Guinea pigs are somewhat unusual among pet rodents because they grow much bigger than their furry cousins such as mice, rats, and hamsters. At birth, a guinea pig will generally measure around 8-10 cm. You should expect some natural variation in size between the animals in a litter, with some bigger than others. A baby guinea pig measures just 8-10 cm and easily fits into the palm of your hand. Guinea pigs grow very rapidly, and will double in size to around 15-20 cm after just 8 weeks.

To measure the size of your guinea pig, place it on a flat surface and place a ruler or tape measure next to it, running parallel to its body. If you buy your guinea pigs from a pet store, it isn’t uncommon for them to be a little unsure about the age of the animals they stock. In these cases, it is extremely helpful to be able to use your knowledge of guinea pig sizes to estimate their true age. Guinea pigs’ relatively large size makes them great pets for children, as they are much less likely to drop them than they might with smaller animals. Another benefit of their size is that they are less likely to crawl into small, hard-to-reach spaces – something that rodents are renowned for!

If your guinea pig’s size is slightly above or below the numbers given here then you shouldn’t worry, as all cavies will vary somewhat from the average. If your pet is significantly bigger or smaller than these sizes, you should take it for a checkup at your local vet, as it may be a sign of a physical problem.

Genetically Modified Pigs Resistant to PRRS

Imagine how much producers could save if they had swine that were resistant to one of the most costly porcine diseases. Laboratory Equipment just shared amazing news that is sure to change the swine production industry forever. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute have produced pigs that are resistant to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome. Otherwise known as PRRS, this disease is considered one of the most costly animal diseases. This condition costs the swine industry in the U.S.

and Europe about $2.5 billion annually in lost revenue. This virus affects pigs by using a receptor called CD163, which is found on their cells’ surface. The researchers removed a small section of the CD163 gene using gene-altering techniques. They focused on the section of the receptor to which the virus attaches. This was a collaborative effort with Genus PLC, a global leader in animal genetics.

Tests done with the PRRS virus show that the genetically-altered pigs do not become infected. Visit our company website for swine industry jobs in your state, industry news, and other animal nutrition updates. Follow #ContinentalSearch on Facebook and LinkedIn for swine jobs in your area and other opportunities in the animal nutrition industry.

I got a wee baby guinea pig from the pet store, and I was told he had

I got a wee baby guinea pig from the pet store, and I was told he had deformities. I’ve never known a guinea pig to do that, I know it’s a bad sign for a rabbit. I’m going to get a vet at my work to take a look at him if I can this Sunday. I’ll also find out how old he needs to be to get him neutered at the same time… cos I’ve never had a guinea pig neutered, but I know you can do it.

I’ve only ever had females, so this is new to me! :-). I’ve taken a video of him walking, but it was on a couch chair so it’s a bit slanted anyway, he doesn’t appear to be in any pain. I just think the sound of ‘fused hips’ sounds awfully painful to me.

Spain has more pigs than people

The succulent meat features on many a dinner table and tapas spread, and the cured hams are renowned worldwide. Even as far back as Roman times, Spain’s hams were spoken of highly, and when the Romans lost control of the region, the Goths who followed gave pigs special protection. Now the relationship between Spaniards and their pigs is more tense than usual. The number of pigs in Spain has surpassed that of human citizens – 50 million animals compared to 46.5 million people. The sheer volume of waste is why animal agriculture is the fourth leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions in Spain, following transportation, electricity generation, and industry.

As ham production becomes more industrialized throughout Spain, standards have fallen, raising questions about food safety. The authenticity of production methods has been challenged as well, particularly that of the famous jamón ibérico de bellota, which retails for hundreds of Euros per kilogram and is made by letting blackfoot pigs roam in a oak forest for their final few months of life, foraging for acorns. Formal oversight is lacking, which has allowed producers to cut corners, supplementing the acorn diet with animal feed and shortening the mandatory three-year curing period. These unfortunate problems are indicative of a broader global crisis when it comes to meat production. The fact is that inhabitants of wealthier developed nations eat far too much meat and are not willing to pay enough money for it, both of which are contributing factors to the over-industrialization of animal agriculture.

Significantly reducing meat consumption levels should be a priority for policy-makers worldwide, as it would resolve a host of issues over time, from cleaner water, lower emissions, and freeing up land, to health concerns about processed meats and the ethical implications of raising animals in unnaturally tight conditions. Spain’s pig problem is one that every other nation will soon face if we keep eating meat the way we do.

Pigs, Hogs, and Drug Testing

At the beginning, a group of healthcare providers start utilizing a new or newly discovered CPT or HCPCS code for a test, procedure, or product. The enthusiasm of early adopters over a clinically beneficial test gives way to more and more providers pursuing the opportunity, some inevitably driven more by profit opportunity than clinical value. As the volume of claims grow, the insurance companies begin to audit for overutilization, lack of medical necessity, and excessive testing. In addition to the heightened scrutiny of claims, providers also find the reimbursement drops as the volume of the testing exapnds. A subset of providers or marketers try grow their claim volume even more aggressively, trying to cash in on a profit opportunity that they perceive to be time-limited.

As a healthcare lawyer dealing with reimbursement disputes over the past two decades, I could rattle off dozens examples of this phenomenon:diagnostic tests from nerve conduction studies and electromyography to genetic testing. Over the last eight years or so, drug testing through urine toxicology screening has been the most pervasive example of this phenomenon. Beginning around 2007, interest began to grow around the use of urine toxicology screening for injured workers being treated for pain by workers compensation providers. Addiction treatment providers have embraced urine tox screening. In the Sky Labs case, Cigna has alleged that its payments in excess of $32m for UDT were fraudulent because the labs routinely waived co-pay waivers and also because the labs induced kickbacks, by allocating investment opportunities to drug rehabs based on the volume of urine tox samples referred.

Providers would do well to take a cue from the Sky Labs allegations. Labs, addiction treatment providers, and physicians that manage all three are likely to do just fine.

The Woman Who’s Rescued Thousands of Guinea Pigs | CUTE AS FLUFF

Japanese encephalitis is transmitted to pigs as rapidly in Cambodian peri-urban areas as rural areas

Japanese encephalitis virus, which causes acute encephalitis in Eastern and Southern Asia, is traditionally considered a rural disease. Now, researchers reporting in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases have shown that pigs in a peri-urban and a rural farm were infected by the virus at the same rate. Domestic pigs are considered major hosts, although the disease infects a wide range of vertebrates. JE has long been considered a rural disease, with proximity to rice fields and pig farming known to be risk factors of the disease. In their new work, Juliette Di Francesco, of the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge, Cambodia, and colleagues started their work based on a series of previous studies of JE virus by the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development.

Francesco and her colleagues followed 15 pigs in a rural farm and 15 pigs in a peri-urban farm. In both cases, they collected blood samples from the pigs every 8 to 11 days in 2015. Each sample was tested for the presence of JE virus antibodies and JE virus RNA. In both groups, all the pigs tested positive for JE virus antibodies by the age of 6 months. The force of infection was similar in both farms, with a force of 0.61 and 0.69 per day in the peri-urban and the rural farm, respectively.

The researchers detected six different strains of JE virus in the pigs. The pigs became infected later in the rural farm, which may be due to their later loss of maternal antibodies and to the larger amount of pigs in their proximity. Additional larger studies in other urban, peri-urban, and rural settings are needed to confirm these findings.

Mucosal environment of older pigs helps newborn piglets with intestinal injury recover

Researchers from North Carolina State University have found that the intestinal mucosal environment of juvenile pigs can stimulate repair of intestinal injuries in newborn piglets. The findings have implications both for understanding why newborns of many species – including humans – are unable to repair these injuries on their own, as well as for potential future treatments. Intestinal ischemic injury occurs when blood flow to a portion of the intestine is cut off, resulting in the loss of epithelial cells that line intestinal walls. Once this barrier is damaged, intestinal contents can leak into the bloodstream, causing sepsis and often fatal infections. Infants are particularly vulnerable to these injuries; this research shows it may be because they lack the ability to quickly repair the damaged areas.

Ziegler and her team looked at ischemia in 2-week-old and 6-week-old pigs by surgically inducing ischemia in small sections of intestine and then removing the injured tissue for study. They noted that in the juvenile pigs, the uninjured epithelial cells flattened out and resealed the intestinal barrier within a couple of hours. The epithelial cells from the newborn pigs did not flatten or reseal the barrier. The researchers then scraped the mucosal micro-environment – essentially the surface layer – from the 6-week-old intestine and applied it to the newborn intestine, which was then able to repair itself.

Guinea Pig Care –

We usually recommend that male pigs, on the other hand, stay single unless they show distinct signs of loneliness. If you are paying attention, you will most likely know if your pig is lonely. Just as some are distinctly lonely by themselves, some pigs are distinctly happy alone and don’t want a mate. It is better to have a single pig who is happy than two pigs who fight. Usually, it’s one pig doing the fighting and the other getting beat up.

If you already have one pig and want another, the best way to pick the second pig is to let them pick each other. Put your pig and each candidate in a playpen together and see how they interact. Clicking of teeth is a bad sign-if the pigs begin clicking their teeth at each other, the bond will not be a good one. You should give them a good 20 minutes together before taking the second pig home, and you should keep an eye on them the first week or two that they are together. If you are adopting your second pig from us, we do require that you bring your pig with you before we will send them home together.

We routinely separate fighting pigs and match up lonely ones. So while we can’t guarantee a perfect match, we’ve done everything possible to make sure you won’t have problems when your pigs come home.

Guinea Pig Health Ileus In Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs should be eating and defecating regularly. If you noticed that your cavy hasn’t touched his food and there is less fecal material being passed, he may have ileus. The condition is caused by the accumulation of gas in the stomach and intestines due to lack of normal movement of the gastrointestinal tract. With no food coming in and gas building up, the condition can become very life-threatening and your pet needs immediate veterinary attention. Ileus can occur secondary to an underlying health issue or as a result of stress which can cause your pet to stop eating.

Being infested by lice, an upper respiratory tract infection, moving your pet’s cage, or the arrival of a new guinea pig can stress your cavies so much so that they stop eating and suffer from ileus. Any change in your pet’s eating habits should be brought to the attention of your Savannah, GA veterinarian.

China culls thousands of pigs as African swine fever spreads – Archy news nety

More than 14,500 pigs have been culled in an eastern Chinese city, officials said Wednesday, as the world’s largest pork producer scrambles to contain an outbreak of African swine fever. Beijing reported its first case of the disease in early August, and since then the virus has spread to pigs in several cities across China, requiring authorities to destroy large numbers of hogs. African swine fever is not harmful to humans but causes haemorrhagic fever in domesticated pigs and wild boar that almost always ends in death within a few days. There is no antidote or vaccine, and the only known method to prevent the disease from spreading is a mass cull of the infected livestock. The government of the port city of Lianyungang, about 500km north of Shanghai, said it had culled the swine by Monday night in a quarantined area.

Authorities said they had inspected four million other pigs in the city and found no other abnormalities. In a report to the World Organisation for Animal Health, Beijing said an emergency plan had been launched and control measures taken to halt the spread of the disease. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation warned in May of the risk of the spread of African swine fever from Russia. Around half of the world’s pigs are raised in China, and the Chinese are the biggest consumers of pork per capita, according to the FAO. African swine fever is not harmful to humans but causes haemorrhagic fever in domesticated pigs and wild boar.

Bioengineered Lungs Successfully Transplanted Into Pigs

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 1, 2018 – Lab-grown lungs have been successfully transplanted into pigs with no apparent medical complication for months after the procedure, researchers report. This line of research on bioengineered lungs could eventually lead to more options for people who need a lung transplant, according to the team at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The lungs, which were tissue-matched to each individual pig, were grown in the laboratory. Each pig received one bioengineered lung and retained an original lung. As early as two weeks after being transplanted, the bioengineered lungs created a network of blood vessels they needed to survive, according to the study published Aug. 1 in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The researchers assessed the development of lung tissue and integration of the bioengineered lungs at 10 hours, two weeks, one month and two months after the transplants. The study was meant to assess how well the bioengineered lungs adapted and continued to mature within a large, living body. It didn’t evaluate the levels of oxygen the lungs provided to the pigs. Research in animals often doesn’t pan out in humans, so further research is required. The researchers said it may be possible to grow lungs to transplant into people within five to 10 years.

The U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has more on lung transplants.

Natural Pig Farming

Disease is the most obvious sign of poor animal welfare. Controlling disease is high on the agenda in factory farms. This is because the system pigs are raised in creates huge health risks to the pigs being raised. Ammonia pollution and stress reduces the pigs immune system disease resistance capacity. Less efficient excrement cleaning systems leave floor a breeding ground for bacteria.

Lack of pen space leads to pigs lying in their own filth and excrementMakes picking up illness more likely. Causes a higher level of urinary infections than deep bed or free range. Hard and slatted floors make physical injuries and illness more likely – lameness is more frequent due to the hard unyielding surfaces pig are raised on factory farms. Pigs suffer higher levels of psychological problems due to deprivations inherent in factory farm system. As a result factory farms need to have strict bio security measures, must vaccinate their pigs against many known virus’s, and must routinely use antibiotics to try to keep the pigs healthy enough to survive in the high bacteria, high virus environment they are kept in.

Natural pig farming in comparison has none of these problems. With fresh air, healthy deep floor bedding and sensible stocking density we raise stress-free, disease-free pigs.

ovarian cysts and GOOD vets

I just really wanted to stress to everyone how important it is to have a GOOD cavy savvy vet and also for those with female pigs to be aware of the risks of ovarian cysts. Our original vets wanted to spay but we wanted someone more specialised to do it. I got in touch with my local rescue and was recommended a vet that sees all their piggies. Rosie got two hormone injections and her recovery was almost instantaneous, all thanks to this super vet! I dread to think what would have happened had we gone ahead with the spay recommended by the first vets.

We took the 60 mile round trip to see Mr. Good Vet again and this time by physical examination alone he detected a pea sized lump on her left ovary. We scheduled more hormone appointments for her at our closer vets. Three more of our pigs have presented with signs of ovarian cysts. Our Good Vet suggested we stick at it just a little longer, which we did, and we got the result we wanted.

Rosie was 1.5 years old when first diagnosed, it’s not just older ladies, younger girls CAN get ovarian cysts. If your female is grumpy, aggressive, losing hair, has a strange change in weight or has crusty or enlarged nipples get her to the vet! The statistics are not known exactly but vary between 50-90% of all intact female guinea pigs developing ovarian cysts. A good vet is worth his or her weight in GOLD – a good vet can save your piggie’s life!

Fit Guinea Pig

I want to share with you guys something I came across while having a fun day at the beach with my friend. My friend is a gymnastics instructor and for us, going to the beach is an opportunity to be silly and practice poses such as handstands, bridges, tumbles etc. I suggested for us to go to Santa Monica beach because there is this area there called Original Muscle Beach right next to the Santa Monica Pier. Original Muscle Beach is an area filled with bars, metal rings, and ropes where people go practice acrobatics, bodybuilding, or just to goof around and have a good time. We noticed a group of people doing handstands by this grass area so we decided to walk over and see what it was all about.

A group of people were having what they call an Acroyoga Jam. A jam is when a lot of people gather and start practicing among each other, and yes it is free. This group in particular meets every Sunday around noon and they stay until sunset practicing for hours and just having an all around good time. These people started explaining to us how it is yoga combined with acrobatic moves. These people were so welcoming that they started teaching my friend and I some moves.

If you’re not familiar with Acroyoga, I recommend looking up Youtube videos. So to sum it all up, if you want to try something unique and fun while still getting a great workout, I highly recommend Acroyoga.

Oriez is one of thousands of Americans who volunteer their body and time to be a part of a scientific experiment. People who volunteer for these trials can be anyone from a healthy student who needs to make a little extra cash to a desperate cancer patient hoping an experimental drug really can help. While the health ministry is still investigating what happened, five people were hospitalized and one volunteer died. All these volunteers started the study healthy and now some may leave with a permanent disability. That’s good news for people like volunteer Steve Reszka.

The Buffalo, New York, resident has diabetes and high blood pressure and saw an ad asking for diabetes drug trial volunteers a couple of years ago. To be a volunteer, he sat for a couple of hours of preliminary tests. The tests themselves are designed to keep a volunteer informed about the risks. A trained professional walks the volunteer through instructions page by page and a volunteer signs off on each one. Gortler is grateful for the volunteers, but he said he personally wouldn’t volunteer, particularly in an early-stage trial.

The Clinical Center Patients’ Bill of Rights which protects you when you volunteer also explains your rights. While the drug trial Steve Reszka was a part of didn’t work out, he said he still left the experience feeling good about what he did and he’d volunteer again.

Pastured Pigs, Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Sheep, Dogs and Kids in the Mountains of Vermont

On this past Thursday morning, March 15th 2018, Dr. C, the regional head of meat inspection from the USDA came to view our on-farm butcher shop here at Sugar Mountain Farm. We’ve been operating our butcher shop for about two and a half years under state inspection and almost ten years since we first started discussing building the butcher shop. Both the USDA and state recommend starting operations at the state level for several years and then upgrading to USDA once any kinks have been smoothed out in operations. Part of their reasoning is that the Vermont state inspection offices are just down the road from us in Montpelier so we can more easily get help from the local officials as we start up our own nano-scale meat processing facility.

Two of the state inspectors live just a few miles from us here in Orange town which on a per capita basis is a hot bed of avant guard small scale foodie industry tucked away in the mountains and woods. Last August, several months before our two year mark, the local inspectors encouraged us to fill out the paperwork for upgrading from Vermont state inspected to USDA inspected. We met for several hours along with the Vermont head of inspection and our regular in operations inspector – a big crowd in our tiny little butcher shop! I gave them the grand tour – he was very interested and impressed with the design and construction of the building. Dr.

C said that he will recommend to the USDA national head office that we be approved for the upgrade from Vermont state inspection to federal inspection. The next issue is getting all of our labels and formulations approved by FSIS at the USDA. Sometime in April we’ll officially begin operation as a USDA inspect meat processing facility, a.k.a. a butcher shop, and be able to start shipping our products out-of-state. We’ve done it, step-by-step, with the help of a lot of people including Kickstarter backers, CSA Pre-Buyers, friends, family, an Angel and government officials who all made it possible for us to build our own on-farm USDA inspected butcher shop here at Sugar Mountain Farm.

The butcher shop was financed without any bank loans, without government funs, without grants. PS. Once we have the final labels and formulations approved we will be able to start shipping across state lines.

Lab-Grown Lungs? Scientists Transplant Bio-Engineered Organ Into Pigs Successfully – Archy news nety

Four years after developing first-ever lab-engineered lungs, scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch have managed to transplant the organ into pigs, with no complication whatsoever. Researchers now believe further developments in this field could ultimately achieve their main goal – development of lab-grown lungs for human recipients. This prompted the researchers to create a new, home-grown source for lungs. Though the first bioengineered lungs were created in 2014, scientists couldn’t ensure survivability of the subject it was tested on. As the team described, the lung in question was created with the help of a scaffolding, a framework that could allow the pigs’ cells and blood vessels to grow.

They first took lungs of an already dead pig and treated it with a solution of sugar and detergent. This washed off cells and blood vessels from the removed organ, leaving just the scaffolding of tough proteins or the skeleton of the lung behind. After prepping the scaffolding, the researchers treated it with a carefully prepared mixture of growth-bolstering nutrients and lung cells harvested from the recipient pig. Finally, the bioengineered lung was allowed to grow in a bio-reactor for about 30 days. They then transplanted the lungs into four different pigs.

During this period, the team noted the transplanted lungs were accepted by the animals’ body and started growing just as they expected. That said, the team believes further development in the field and ensuing tests on pigs could lead to the development of bio-engineered lungs for human recipients.

Hairless Hilltop Hunks

When first deciding to breed hairless guinea pigs, you must make sure your sow is under 7 months old when first being bred. You want him to be mature and sturdy for his new duties 🙂 My Hairless Guinea Pig Boars sometimes get beaten up by the sows when they are not in season and some even loose a little weight from running around all day chasing them around. Depending on the size of the litter, you might not notice the babies moving or a change in body size until about a month before the birth. You will be able to feel the back bones, and other parts of the babies bodies very clearly. Some immediate signs that she is in labor is a hiccupping motion which is her pushing the babies out.

Other signs of labor is she might roll on her tummy and turn in circles several times looking for her babies. With each contraction she will push the babies out one at a time, with about 5-10 minutes between each baby. I will remove the sack on the babies nose right away and use a baby booger sucker to such out their mouths and noses. It is very hard on sows already to be having babies, and she will need time to rest. CARING FOR NEWBORNS.Skinny pig babies are born fully developed with no furr unlike Baldwins.

From my experience some babies might get the shavings in their eyes and then become irritated so I put a towel down for about a week. I will bottle feed all the babies about 2-4 times a day if it is a litter of 3 or more.
