What Is Nipah Virus? World Health Organization Ranks It Alongside the Ebola & Zika Virus

Often, such viral agents have only been recently discovered and emerged as an outbreak in a particular region of the world. This is the case for the Nipah virus, which has claimed the lives of at least nine people in India this year. Nipah virus was first discovered in Malaysia in the late 1990s when an outbreak of the virus struck approximately 265 people. The impact of these actions was moderate as it was determined that NiV could not only transmit from pigs to humans, but also that person-to-person transmission was possible. Despite the absence of any medical treatments for the disease, people can survive infection with NiV, though they are often left with neurological disorders marked by aberrations in personality and recurrent seizures.

The number of cases had advanced to 18 of which 16 of the patients had died due to NiV. The two remaining NiV-infected individuals were responding well to treatment with Ribavirin, a potent anti-viral drug. In that instance, the lethality of the virus was less than what was anticipated. In light of the recent NiV outbreak, a virus that the WHO ranks in its top priorities alongside Ebola virus and Zika virus, a global health consortium called the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations awarded 25 million dollars to biotech companies. In the United States that have been leading the charge to develop a NiV vaccine.

There are at least two different experimental NiV vaccines that have shown protective results when tested in animal models. One vaccine candidate involves a recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus decorated with the immunogenic glycoprotein of NiV. VSV is a well-studied virus that has been attenuated in the laboratory setting and has been investigated for its capacity to be genetically altered to have its surface coated with immune system stimulating molecules from a variety of different viruses. The VSV-NiV vaccine offered protection from NiV infection.

Researchers Boar into the Ecology and Health of Wild Pigs

The Eurasian wild boar is native to Europe and Asia; however their range has vastly expanded across the world through human translocation. Wild boars cause significant widespread damage to native ecosystems and to crops through their rooting and digging. Introduced to Canada from Europe in the late 1980s through the 1990s, wild boar were to be raised as meat for national and international consumption. Cross-breeding of wild boar with domestic swine was encouraged in order to increase animal size, and to produce much larger litters. Escaped or released animals from many farms across Canada established free-ranging populations that began to reproduce in the wild.

These cross-bred wild animals, generally called ‘wild pigs’ have since established populations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. The ‘Canadian Wild Pig Project’ led by Dr. Ryan Brook has been working to understand the ecology of wild pigs in Canada for five years. Over the past three years, Dr. Brook and his collaborators have been studying the movements, home ranges, habitat selection, and interactions with domestic hog farms of wild pigs in Saskatchewan by tracking individuals using GPS collars.

Ruth Kost, a Ph.D. student on the project has been collecting observations of wild pigs across Canada to develop the first baseline map of their distribution in Canada. Wild pigs are also being tested for disease in collaboration with Dr. Trent Bollinger and Marnie Zimmer of the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative. Dr.

Bollinger, Marnie, and a 4th year veterinary student will be heading to Melfort and Moose Mountain area to assist with a wild pig cull. Click this link for the supplemental CWHC info sheet on wild pigs: The Wild Boar(Photos provided by Dr. Ryan Brook).

Avian Flu Diary: CDC Infographic On The Spread Of Flu Between Pigs And People

While we await further word on the subtype and number of cases in two suspected transmission events linked to recent county fairs, the CDC has released a new 2-page PDF infographic on how swine variant viruses are transmitted to humans. Transmission of flu viruses between pigs and people is a two way street. People can, and often do, infect pigs with human seasonal virus, and this has led to reassortments of human and swine flu viruses, resulting in the creation of new variants. While most people who contract swine variant influenza will experience only mild to moderate illness, and these viruses haven’t developed the ability to spread in an efficient and sustained manner in the community, the CDC takes these outbreaks very seriously. All influenza viruses have the capacity to change and it’s possible that variant viruses may change such that they infect people easily and spread easily from person-to-person.

CDC Recommendations For People At High Risk:If you are at high risk of serious flu complications and are going to a fair where pigs will be present, avoid pigs and swine barns at the fair. This includes children younger than 5 years, people 65 years and older, pregnant women, and people with certain long-term health conditions. If you are not at high risk, take these precautions:Don’t take food or drink into pig areas; don’t eat, drink or put anything in your mouth in pig areas. Don’t take toys, pacifiers, cups, baby bottles, strollers, or similar items into pig areas. Wash your hands often with soap and running water before and after exposure to pigs.

Take protective measures if you must come in contact with pigs that are known or suspected to be sick. To further reduce the risk of infection, minimize contact with pigs in the pig barn and arenas.

ADD / ADHD Message Board

I’m only 24 yrs old, and my life has spiraled out of control in many ways, but the journey back to health and balance begun a long time ago, once I realized it’s a personal journey for everyone, but the key to healing from this is recognizing you are not your condition nor are you the label the medical community or people at large give you. Once you begin to see your ADHD symptoms as perfectly normal your attitude will slowly change, and you will accept that with this kind of brain chemistry comes immense gifts along with the struggles. Treatment- from a purely scientific standpoint- ADHD symptoms such as being easily distracted, erratic sleeping patterns, unpredictable mood among many others are nothing more than imbalances within your mind/body as a whole. Every thing needs to be addressed , because all it takes is one imbalance within your system to throw everything out of whack because everything else has to overcompensate. I also know a few people who have benefitted immensely from cutting out stimulants like caffeine( bad news for those of us with ADHD), sugar, gluten, too much alcohol etc.

Have begun taking probiotics which help regulate the digestive tract and in the process help regulate mood/ thoughts and emotions- the reason behind this is not supernatural, science has now proven that an enormous amount of our mood directly stems from our digestive tracts which can be responsible for up to 90% of serotonin in our brains! It sounds bizarre but it is very true. This is why people who exercise and eat healthy are generally happier people. Educate yourself on ADHD and it’s masks- take everything with a grain of salt, and realize most people including pharmaceutical companies have a motive- $, sometimes you have to think outside of the box and become your own doctor to fully regulate your life again. Exercise!- Any chance you get exercise- this releases mass amounts of endorphins/dopamine etc.

Feel good chemicals in the brain that help regulate thinking, create a more calm/peaceful approach to life- I could go on forever here of the benefits. The key is those of us with ADHD have mass amounts of energy( though this can fluctuate) we need an outlet for this – exercise is paramount. Clean up your diet- sugar/caffeine/ unnatural artificial stimulatants wreck havoc on our brains- create tensions, jitters, insomnia, digestive issues and many more- I know this one is challenging, but trust me if you were to really cut out these offenders, and transition to a more natural organic diet- you will be shocked out how everything else seems to fall in place.

NIH researchers discover highly infectious vehicle for virus transmission among humans

Previously, it was believed that these viruses only spread through individual virus particles. The discovery of these clusters, the scientists say, marks a turning point in the understanding of how these viruses spread and why they are so infectious. The researchers studied norovirus and rotavirus-hard-to-treat viruses that are the most common cause of stomach illness, or gastroenteritis, and that afflicts millions of people each year. The viruses cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to abdominal pain and can sometimes result in death, particularly among young children and the elderly. The study was supported in part by the Intramural Research programs of the NHLBI and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, both part of the National Institutes of Health.

Until a few years ago, most scientists believed that viruses, particularly those responsible for stomach illnesses, could only behave as independent infectious agents. The scientists compared this new model of viral transmission to a Trojan horse: A group of membrane-bound viruses arrives at a host cell and deposits viruses in the cell while dodging detection by the immune system. The researchers obtained fecal samples of humans and animals and found that the viruses are shed in the stool as virus clusters inside membrane-bound packets. The researchers determined that the high level of infectiousness was likely due to the vesicles delivering many viruses at once to the target tissues; protecting their viral cargo from being destroyed by prolonged exposure to enzymes; and possibly by making their viral cargo invisible to the antibodies that are in the stool or gut of the host. Handwashing with soap and water helps prevent the spread of viruses.

Part of the National Institutes of Health, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute plans, conducts, and supports research related to the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart, blood vessel, lung, and blood diseases; and sleep disorders. NIH is the primary federal agency conducting and supporting basic, clinical, and translational medical research, and is investigating the causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases.

Swine Flu Information

Swine Influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza that regularly cause outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans human infections with swine flu do occur, and cases of human-to-human spread of swine flu viruses has been documented. From December 2005 through February 2009, a total of 12 human infections with swine influenza were reported from 10 states in the United States. Since March 2009, a number of confirmed human cases of a new strain of swine influenza A virus infection in California, Texas, and Mexico have been identified. April 25, 2009 19:30 EDT.

Human cases of swine influenza A virus infection have been identified in the U.S. in San Diego County and Imperial County, California as well as in San Antonio, Texas. Internationally, human cases of swine influenza A virus infection have been identified in Mexico. See: World Health Organization Last Updated: As of April 25th, 2009 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection and whether additional people have been infected with similar swine influenza viruses. CDC is working very closely with state and local officials in California, Texas, as well as with health officials in Mexico, Canada and the World Health Organization. On April 24th, CDC deployed 7 epidemiologists to San Diego County, California and Imperial County, California and 1 senior medical officer to Texas to provide guidance and technical support for the ongoing epidemiologic field investigations. CDC has also deployed to Mexico 1 medical officer and 1 senior expert who are part of a global team that is responding to the outbreak of respiratory illnesses in Mexico. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Guinea pigs for adoption

Animal shelters are full of great pets available for adoption. Most of them are dogs and cats but you can easily find guinea pigs, hamsters, birds and almost any imaginable pet. Unless you are really determined to get a certain dog breed check animals available for adoption. A significant percentage of purebred dogs and cats can be found in animal shelters. I did a quick search when I was writing this page and the first result I pulled up is a list of seven guinea pigs ready to be adopted.

Backyard breeders that breed large numbers of guinea pigs, just let a herd breed on their own. You can find very young guinea pig pups in animal shelters. If you think that animals in shelter are potentially sick, you are most likely mistaking. In serious, animal loving shelters they will give you a healthy pet. Maybe some of them got to know the guinea pig you like and can give you some tips to help you start with it.

If you don’t know anything about guinea pigs but you really fell in love with one, the shelter staff will usually be very helpful. Here is one more very useful tool to help you find a guinea pig for adoption.

Guinea pig cruelty increases

The RSPCA is urging families to think before they buy a guinea pig after a huge increase in neglect and cruelty cases involving the furry animals. Already this year, 250 have been reported as abandoned to the RSPCA with 1,402 reported over the last three years. Other news: Jealous partner jailed for 13 years for Christmas Day stabbing. More information on the needs of guinea pigs can be found on the RSPCA’s website. The RSPCA also rehomes guinea pigs – if you think you can offer a loving forever home you can see all the details on the RSPCA’s Find a Pet page.

They were rescued by the RSPCA in March and cared for by the charity’s Manchester and Salford branch. Three young guinea pigs were also dumped in a box in Manchester and now need a home.

Roy cops help corral pigs who escaped pen

ROY – They helped bring home the bacon and then hammed it up for the cameras. Two Roy police officers got an unusual call Friday morning that resulted in four large pigs being returned to their homes – and a lot of puns. Four pigs somehow managed to get out of their pen Friday near 4450 South and 3100 West in Roy. When officer Stuart Hackworth and his partner arrived, they found two pigs in a neighbor’s yard and two cooling off in a puddle of water in the driveway of a nearby church. The officers kept the pigs contained as they searched for their owners.

Eventually, the owner came out with a bucket of food and was able to lead the pigs back onto their property.

Mini Pig Education Mini Pig Miniature Pig |

The mission and focus of this website is to educate people about mini pigs. Our team is dedicated to protecting pigs, saving pigs, ensuring accurate and credible information is available about pigs and most importantly, helping mini pig parents with the sometimes complicated care of pigs. We have seen dog shaming pictures, cat shaming videos…but I believe Mini Pig Info is the first to collect videos and pictures and attempt to create something like this. Every single person who is even remotely thinking of adding a pig to their family should watch this video before making that HUGE leap into mini pig parenthood. We do appreciate everyone allowing us to use their pictures and videos to create the video and we hope that it is helpful to someone out there who is contemplating whether or not a pig is the right pet for them.

Thank you so much for coming to our website to find more information about mini pigs. If you have multiple pigs, once you answer, the results, up until the time you respond, will show up and if you don’t mind refreshing the page, you can answer multiple times, preferably once for each pig. This is the first in a series of polls we will be creating to try and provide more accurate information that reflects the overall pig community as it is now. I believe some of the numbers in the past that have been quoted have been skewed, inaccurate, exaggerated or possibly even made up, so we decided to collect info from the pig community and put together the results in a format that people can see for themselves. The responses will be from the people in the pig community and this particular survey will give everyone a better idea of the rate at which pigs are actually being rehomed.

Again, we set it so you can vote multiple times since many people have several pigs that ended up in their care because of different circumstances, so please take the poll once for each pig in your care. It only takes a few seconds to sign and because one voice doesn’t affect much change, we know that a lot of voices can, so your signature could be life altering for someone who is fighting to keep their pig.

China to launch emergency inspections on farms after swine …

BEIJING, Aug 6 – China’s Liaoning province will increase inspections at pig farms and markets and strengthen the monitoring of hog transportation, after the nation’s first African swine fever case was reported there, local media Liaoning Daily reported on Monday. The African swine fever outbreak poses a major threat to the hog farming industry in the province and the whole country, and must be eradicated thoroughly, an official from Liaoning Provincial Bureau of Animal Health and Production said, according to Liaoning Daily. The provincial government has asked local authorities to launch emergency inspections at all pig farms, hog markets, slaughterhouses and harmless treatment sites in the province, and report any cases of pig deaths due to unknown reasons, slaughtered pigs found with splenomegaly or splenic hemorrhage, and immune failure among pigs after receiving swine fever vaccines, the paper reported, citing the animal health bureau. Liaoning also ordered the temporary closure of all live hog markets and slaughterhouses in Shenbei district, where the outbreak was discovered, the paper reported. China culled some 913 hogs near Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning, and banned transportation of hogs from the affected areas, following the outbreak.

Hogs and products in Shenyang can only be distributed within the city, while those transported from outside must go through strict quarantine, the animal health bureau official said. The case in Liaoning, the first in East Asia, has stoked concern about its spread in China, which has the world’s largest pig herd, and possibly to neighbouring countries in Asia. Japan has suspended imports of heat-treated Chinese pork and tightened quarantine operations at airport and seaports, following the outbreak. Local authorities in Liaoning must put affected pigs under strict quarantine and monitoring once suspected cases were discovered. The movement of susceptible animals, and their products must also be restricted, the report said.

Avian Flu Diary: California: San Luis Obispo Public Health Investigating Suspected Swine Variant Flu Cases

Like we saw in Michigan last week, and in Indiana in early July, pigs carrying swine flu are suspected of infecting fairgoers at the California Mid-State fair. The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department is investigating several cases of influenza in the community to determine whether they are linked to a case of influenza in a pig at the California Mid-State Fair. At this time, the Public Health Department does not have any laboratory confirmation that the cases are linked to pigs. A number of cases of pigs transmitting influenza to humans at agricultural fairs have occurred in other states in recent years. If you seek medical attention for the flu and have had extended contact with pigs, tell your health care provider about that contact.

Swine flu outbreaks linked to county fairs and agricultural exhibits present a particularly sticky problem for both fair organizers, and public health officials. As we saw a year ago in EID Journal: Transmission Of Swine H3N2 To Humans At Agricultural Exhibits – Michigan & Ohio 2016, these venues are particularly good at disseminating novel flu viruses to the public. Variant influenza infections in humans continue to occur through contact with exhibition swine; often, the cases are in swine exhibitors with close and prolonged swine exposure. Of note, while widespread illness in pigs was only rarely reported, surveillance revealed an average prevalence of influenza A in fair pigs of 77.5%. This study cautions that this suggests `that subclinical influenza A infections in pigs remain a threat to public health.

This from the CDC. CDC Recommendations For People At High Risk:If you are at high risk of serious flu complications and are going to a fair where pigs will be present, avoid pigs and swine barns at the fair. Take protective measures if you must come in contact with pigs that are known or suspected to be sick. To further reduce the risk of infection, minimize contact with pigs in the pig barn and arenas.

High fat diets and pathology in the guinea pig. Atherosclerosis or liver damage?

Animal models have been widely used to investigate the relationship between diet and atherosclerosis and also to study disease etiology and possible interventions. Few published studies actually reported observations of characteristic atherosclerotic lesions and even fewer of advanced lesions. Studies, by our group, of guinea pigs fed on a high-fat diet revealed similar observations, with indications primarily of fatty streaks but little evidence of atherosclerotic plaques. This review discusses the feasibility of the guinea pig as a model for dietary-induced atherosclerosis. As it stands, current evidence raises doubt as to whether guinea pigs could serve as a realistic model for atherosclerosis.

Our own data and the literature suggest that they could be useful models for studying lipoprotein metabolism, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and dietary interventions which may help regulate these conditions. Substance High fat diets and pathology in the guinea pig.

Romania reports 500 outbreaks of African swine fever in pigs

BUCHAREST, Romania – Romanian authorities have reported more than 500 separate outbreaks of African swine fever in pigs, mainly in the Danube Delta and near the Hungarian border. In the eastern county of Tulcea, the region worst hit by the disease, an official told The Associated Press on Monday that a state of emergency had been proclaimed. Mihai Pagal, a spokesman for the Tulcea prefect’s office, said 48,000 pigs had been culled since June after they came down with the disease. He said two large commercial farms had been badly hit, as well as many smaller farms. Tulcea alone has seen 471 outbreaks of swine fever, according to Romanian veterinary authorities.

They said nationwide, 500 farmers will receive compensation for dead livestock. The World Organization for Animal Health says African swine fever doesn’t affect humans.

Scientists Just Transplanted Lab-Grown Lungs into Pigs

Scientists from the University of Texas Medical Branch just successfully transplanted lab-grown lungs into pigs – an exciting development towards being able to bioengineer lungs for humans someday, too. To create these lungs, researchers first made a lung skeleton. They used sugar and detergent to remove the cells and blood from pig lungs, leaving them with a protein structure. Next, scientists added cells from the recipient pig lungs to each scaffold, and let them grow over 30 days. When the lungs were ready, they made the transplant into four recipient pigs.

Within two weeks, the transplanted lugs began to develop the blood vessel networks they need to survive. The animals seemed to take their lab-grown lungs well, showing no signs of rejecting the foreign organs. Researchers will continue to study the effects of the transplanted organs long term. If their work is successful, it could change organ transplation in the future. Currently, there’s over 1,400 people in the U.S.

awaiting lung transplants. Researchers believe they could be five to ten years away from being able to transplant lab-grown lungs to patients in compassionate use circumstances. Bioengineered organs could be an improvement from human donated organs: lungs grow from the recipient’s own cells are less likely to get rejected by the body, and being able to grow new lungs in a lab could put an end to organ shortages.

Genetically modified pigs able to resist costly disease – Scientific Inquirer

Scientists have produced pigs that can resist one of the world’s most costly animal diseases, by changing their genetic code. Tests with the virus – called Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, or PRRS – found the pigs do not become infected at all. The animals show no signs that the change in their DNA has had any other impact on their health or wellbeing. The disease causes breathing problems and deaths in young animals and if pregnant sows become infected, it can cause them to lose their litter. The virus infects pigs using a receptor on their cells’ surface called CD163.

The team collaborated with Genus PLC, a leading global animal genetics company, to produce pigs with the specific DNA change. Previous studies had shown that cells from these animals were resistant to the virus in lab tests. This is the first time researchers have exposed these pigs to the virus to see if they become infected. Other groups have used gene editing to create PRRS-resistant pigs by removing the whole CD163 receptor. Genetically modified animals are banned from the food chain in Europe.

It is not clear what regulations would apply to gene-edited animals as the approach is different. GM techniques have been controversial because they can involve introducing genes of other species into an animal.

Tea cup pigs? Here’s the truth from Pete the Vet on TV3’s Ireland AM

A baby pig pet sounds so charming, and the idea of a pig that never gets much bigger than a small dog sounds interesting. Pigs are at least as intelligent as dogs, and they often have huge personalities. The truth is that there’s no such things as pigs which stay the size of a teacup. A large, boisterous animal like this is a complex creature to have living living in. For this reason, many people get cute piglets only to discover that it’s impossible to keep them as they grow older and bigger, and they have to rehome them.

Pigs are social, playful, protective animals who love the company of their own species, and they love to be outside, playing, rooting around in woodland, engaging with their environment. You also need to consider legal aspects: as farm animals, pigs are tightly regulated, including travel, living conditions and other issues. You may also struggle to find a vet who is experienced in treating pigs as pets.

WACO, Texas – A dog’s touching farewell to his best friend is breaking hearts on social media. According to multiple reports, Joseph Scaramucci posted several pictures on Facebook of his pup Mattis, who was clearly heartbroken over the death of the family’s guinea pig. Otis the guinea pig reportedly died on July 28 after the family returned from vacation. Brittany Scaramucci told local reporters Mattis refused to leave his best friend’s side until his passed over the weekend. The Scaramuccis report that Mattis is still mourning the loss of his friend of four years.

The depressed canine probably shouldn’t surprise anyone. A 2014 study found that dogs pick up on emotions the same way humans do, so Mattis’ touching display for his dying friend was more natural than some might think.

Care of Guinea Pigs Introduction Guinea pig is the common name for a cavy. The guinea pig neither comes from Guinea, nor is it a pig. Wild herds of guinea pigs maintain a strict dominance ranking; a single, dominant male serves as the head of a harem of females. If you are planning to buy two or more guinea pigs so that they might keep each other company, remember that two adult males will not tolerate each other’s company and housing them together can lead to fighting, resource hoarding and eventually death for the submissive, weaker guinea pig. Remember, guinea pigs are quite precocious and can start breeding as young as 4-6 weeks of age unless you want lots of guinea pigs, it is best to get either the male or female or both guinea pigs neutered if you are housing a male and a female together.

Bedding in guinea pig cages serves three purposes: it is the litter box, it serves as a substrate in which the guinea pig may nest and burrow, and it provides a soft surface on which to walk. Guinea pig pellets are also an important part of your guinea pig’s diet. Supplementing your guinea pig’s diet with fresh vegetables and fruits will help prevent boredom, as well as make sure that your guinea pig ‘s diet is optimum. Upper respiratory infections can quickly lead to pneumonia in a guinea pig and guinea pigs with these signs should be seen by a veterinarian. Never house Guinea pigs and rabbits in the same hutch, and limit dog/guinea pig interactions.

Reproduction Most people who buy guinea pigs for pets aren’t buying them to breed guinea pigs unfortunately, sometimes the pet stores unknowingly sell pregnant females. Any person considering a guinea pig as a pet should spend some time around guinea pigs before adopting them.

Understanding Animal Research

Guinea pigs are used to test the vaccine against anthrax. Guinea pigs are used in the testing of vaccines against anthrax, currently an important area of biodefence research. The guinea pig is also widely used to provide tissues and organs for research. Guinea pig blood components are widely used, and isolated organ preparations such as guinea pig lung and intestine are extensively used in research to develop new medicines. Guinea pig intestines have been used to study the ‘gut-brain’ which contains as many nerve cells as the spinal cord.

Guinea pig intestine has also been extensively used to study the ‘little brain’ in the gut, which contains as many nerve cells as the spinal cord. Guinea pigs’ airways are sensitive to allergens, so it has been widely used in asthma studies. Vitamin C was discovered through research on guinea pigs. Vitamin C was discovered through research on guinea pigs, and they have since been important in nutritional research. Guinea pigs are ideal animal models to study auditory systems.

Guinea pigs are therefore a preferred animal model for studying auditory systems, and in 1961 Georg von Békésy was awarded a Nobel Prize for describing the mechanical mechanisms of the cochlea in guinea pigs. In 1919 research showed that inoculation of guinea pigs with a small amount of blood from Yellow Fever patients produced a mild reaction in the animals.

Guinea Pig Preventive Care

The guinea pig is a rodent that derives from South America. On average, the life span of a guinea pig is 7 years. Commercial chows are best, but avoid using other rodent or rabbit chows, as these are not properly balanced for guinea pigs. Guinea pigs have a dietary requirement for Vitamin C and this may be provided in the water or in cabbage or oranges as well as crushing vitamin C tablets into fresh water daily. Guinea pigs may be housed together and males and females often form permanent couples.

Never leave your guinea pig alone with dogs or cats! You may scoop up and cup guinea pigs with the palms of your hands but support their bodies close to yours. In spite of good nutrition and sanitary housing, guinea pigs can develop various ailments. Lameness may be present and painful, lame guinea pigs are not likely to eat very well. If parasites are present then all who came in contact with guinea pigs should be treated with an appropriate medication.

Please provide the best diet and care possible so that your guinea pig may enjoy a longer, healthier life. We recommend that you purchase a good reference book for guinea pig care.

Harringtons for Healthy Pets

Rabbits and guinea pigs need access to fresh hay and water at all times. Hay is essential to help them maintain a healthy digestion. They enjoy variety and appreciate the addition of fresh food in their diet several times each week. It is unkind to overfeed your pet, so adjust the amount you feed to keep them at their ideal weight. Chewing small twigs from trees such as apple and hazel helps to keep their teeth strong and healthy.

When changing food, do so gradually over a 7 to 10 day period.

Pigs At Fowlerville Fair Test Positive For Swine Flu

The Livingston County Health Department reports the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development identified pigs at the Fowlerville Fair that tested positive for swine flu, or influenza A. The Fowlerville Fair Board has taken steps to isolate infected pigs to prevent additional exposure. Infected pigs began showing symptoms Thursday evening and laboratory results were confirmed late Friday afternoon. At this time, there are no reported human illnesses. The Health Department and Fowlerville Fair Board are reaching out to swine exhibitors, their families, and anyone who visited the swine barn at the fair to notify them of possible exposure to infected pigs.

The Health Department is also instructing healthcare providers in the area to watch for patients with respiratory symptoms who report exposure to swine or who visited the fair. Swine flu can spread quickly between pigs and while rare, can pass to humans through droplets in the air when sick pigs cough or sneeze. Human symptoms are similar to those of seasonal flu and can include fever, cough, runny nose, and sometimes body aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Symptoms usually appear within three days of exposure but can occur up to 10 days. Currently there is no vaccine for swine flu, nor will the seasonal flu vaccine protect against swine flu; however, antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu and Relenza, are said to be an effective form of treatment.

The Health Department’s full release can be viewed at the attachment below.

Scientists Successfully Transplant Lab-Grown Lungs Into Pigs

Thanks to medical technology that has helped lead to the development of organ transplants, this has resulted in many lives being saved, where organs such as hearts, lungs, livers, and kidneys have over the years been successfully transplanted from one person to the other. The problem with transplants is that you need to find a donor that matches you. Given that some organs cannot be transplanted from a living person to another, this narrows down the availability options even more, which is one of the reasons why the black market on organs is thriving. There is a glimmer of hope on that horizon, thanks to scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch where they have successfully managed to transplant lab-grown lungs into a pig. Of course this is a long way off from creating lungs that can be transplanted into humans, but the fact that it was successfully transplanted into a pig who survived is a huge step.

Like we said, there is still a long way to go before this tech can be applied to humans, if at all. This is because there needs to be studies done to see how long/durable these lab-made lungs hold up over the years, and if there might be any negative side-effects.

Scientists Created Lab-Grown Lungs And Transplanted Them Into Pigs

Lab-grown lungs were successfully transplanted into pigs for the first time. Scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch are celebrating a breakthrough as they successfully transplanted lab-grown lungs into pigs. This took 30 days inside a bioreactor tank, where the lungs were pumped with nutrients. During the experiment, the pigs’ left lungs were transplanted alongside a bioengineered lung. While the lungs functioned during the study, they weren’t connected to pulmonary arteries.

The transplanted lungs developed blood vessels and connected to the rest of the pigs’ vascular system, according to Popular Science. Back in 2014, Joan Nichols and her team bioengineered a human lung. Engineered pig lung transplant ‘a success’ https://t. The researchers hope that the technology could one day be used for human lung transplants. Great!

U.S. researchers transplant bioengineered lungs into pigs without complication. All of pigs that received a bioengineered lung stayed healthy https://t. It looks like the road is still long before human bioengineered lung transplants could take place.

Housing and Feeding Your Guinea Pig

Dr. Kenneth Welle, an exotic pet veterinarian at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, has advice on housing and feeding your guinea pig. A guinea pig cage should have a solid floor covered in bedding rather than a wire-bottom cage, which can cause problems if the guinea pig catches its toes on the wire. If you use a cage with a wire floor, be sure to provide another surface where the guinea pig can relieve its feet. Cleanliness is very important for good guinea pig health.

Legume hays may be appropriate for growing guinea pigs or pregnant ones, but not for adult guinea pigs. Dr. Welle recommended limiting pellets by weight: 1 tablespoon pellets per pound of guinea pig. Young, growing guinea pigs can have unlimited access to pelleted guinea pig food. Dr.

Welle says that salt licks are not necessary for guinea pigs unless they are somehow eating mineral-deficient hay. If you do want to get your guinea pig a salt lick, the colored salt-and-mineral ones are better than the plain white ones, which have no added minerals. Salt licks can also help with getting your guinea pig to drink more water, if that is a concern. Guinea pig digestive systems are designed for grass diets, which are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates. If your guinea pig has been on such a diet, switch to a plain pellet and hay diet gradually.

Guinea Lynx :: What’s Normal?

If you suspect your guinea pig has mites, be sure to treat them as soon as possible! Aromatic greenish droppings may be caecal pellets, which the guinea pig re-ingests. Very young guinea pigs often have an orange or brown tint to their urine. BOAR GLUE. Yes, male guinea pig ejaculate is normal!

Ejaculate is generally white in color and appears rubbery. Be sure to check out your guinea pig if he is in discomfort or has difficulty urinating. To help monitor health, weigh your guinea pig weekly! Use the weight/health record pages provided in GL’s handy Cavy Health Record Book, a loose-leaf notebook, or a calendar, but be sure to record your guinea pig’s weight on a regular basis. If your guinea pig has lost four or more ounces, see a vet immediately.

WATER CONSUMPTION. Water consumption is different for each guinea pig. Make sure your guinea pig is not just playing with the water bottle if you suspect your pet is drinking too much. If your guinea pig is not eating favorite foods or is hiding it its house, something is wrong. See a vet promptly if you suspect your guinea pig is sick.

So if you decide to adopt, make sure you are there for the long haul! While rare, some guinea pigs have even lived over 10 years.

My Guinea pigs are biting each other?

I would give them at the very least 1 square foot of floor space each. I also think they do better in cages with plastic bottoms. The open caged sides allow more fresh air into the area. Make sure they have places to play in their cage…tubes, boxes. A box or two would also give the small one a rest place from getting chased and bit.

Mine enjoyed playing in, sleeping in and chewing kleenex boxes. They also like climbing on top of things like a wood block or sturdier box. They will chew everything to keep their teeth in good shape. Fruit tree branches work good for chewing, only untreated branches. On another note, I found out the hard way, that you SHOULD NOT feed pigs alfalfa hay.

Give them good quality pellets and timothy hay only. Hsus.org/pets/pet care/rabbit…..
