POORLY GUINEA PIG WAFFLE’S HEALTH UPDATE… (eye, teeth, weight, pts etc.)

Easy checks for a healthy guinea pig

Thankfully, guinea pigs are very hardy creatures, and if kept clean and fed well they rarely become sick. There are some daily checks you should make, to ensure that your guinea pig stays well, it also helps you to notice any change very quickly, and visit your vet at the first sign of illness. EyesThe eyes should be clear and bright, with no sign of cloudiness or discharge. An eye that suddenly goes cloudy may mean that the guinea pig has got an ulcer as a result of a piece of hay in its eye. Any eye problems require urgent veterinary attention.

Guinea pigs do normally secrete a milky discharge from their eyes, which precedes grooming, as they use it on their paws to groom themselves, if you see this you do not need to worry about it. NoseThe nose should be clean, and as with the eyes, shouldn’t be runny. Any discharge or sneezing may suggest that your guinea pig has a cold. Any patches of hair loss or areas where the skin is red and sore may suggest that your guinea pig has mites. Sometimes you may see little tiny nits walking on your guinea pigs fur, these are hay mites, which are harmless and a simple shampoo will get rid of them for you.

Guinea pigs have no fur on the bottom of their feet, so check the bottom of their feet regularly for any sign of soreness. If the guinea pig is wet and smelly between its legs it may have a urine infection.

What’s Good and What’s Not

The Basic Guinea Pig DietThe basic foundation of a Guinea Pig’s diet is simple – water, pellets and grass hay. Pellets, although comprised of mostly hay, offer necessary vitamins and minerals that grass hays simply do not contain. Alfalfa Hay Pellets: Alfalfa based pellets are higher in calcium, fat and sugar; therefore are best suited for young cavies 6 months of age and older, adults, and pregnant and nursing mothers. Timothy Hay Pellets: Guinea pigs can have unlimited timothy hay pellets. Grass hays should make up about 70%-80% of your guinea pig’s diet.

Serve up a heaping bowl of grass hay and make your guinea pigs giddy with glee. Hays mimic the natural environment of guinea pigs in the wild. You can purchase timothy hay as 1st cutting, 2nd cutting, and 3rd cutting. First Cutting: Hay is higher in fiber and full of cavy-lovin’ seed heads, but the texture of the hay itself is a bit coarse for even the most discriminating guinea pig. Second Cutting: Ahhhh, perfect, is what your cavy would say if it could express its LOVE for 2nd cutting hay.

Oat hay is to guinea pigs what warm, delicious oatmeal, oatmeal cookies, and rich, oat bread is to us. Clover and alfalfa hays are also higher in fat and sugar, so a good rule of thumb is to offer it to adult guinea pigs as an occasional treat.

Guinea pigs make lively and inquisitive pets, but they are very different from dogs and cats. Here are a few pointers to make sure your guinea pig stays happy and healthy. Guinea pigs are very social creatures, and are best kept in groups of 2 or more. It is important to handle your guinea pig frequently from the day that you adopt it, so that they get used to human contact. When picking up a guinea pig, ensure the whole body is supported or the pig will struggle.

Guinea pigs are most active at dusk and twilight, and tend to enjoy napping through the middle of the day. Don’t be alarmed if you notice your guinea pig eating his or her own poo – this is a normal behavior to ensure a healthy digestive system! If your guinea pig stops eating even for 24 hours this can be quite serious, and you should contact your vet immediately. A good diet for guinea pigs should be largely made up of hay, grass and small amounts of fruit and vegetables. Guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C themselves, and need it to be supplemented in their diet each day.

Baby guinea pigs are born fully furred with open eyes, and they normally wean at about 3 weeks of age. Many problems with guinea pigs are related to nutrition, digestion, obesity and dental disease.

The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs: Peter Gurney: 9780866221955: Amazon.com: Books

Would recommend this book to anybody who wants Guinea Pig friends. First read this book when I got my Guinea Pigs and as a result I shifted my GP’s into the house with me and gained 3 housemates with incredible personalities. Always thought GP’s were cute, fluffy , dumb little animals who had to live in a cage outside. Have discovered they are cute, fluffy, bossy, interactive, and they live happily inside in a large plastic under-the-bed drawer , about 8 inches high(NOT under the bed!) in the kitchen.

MANAGING BOARS Boars have greater influence than sows on the average size of litters because each boar sires many more pigs than are farrowed by any one sow or gilt to which the boar has been mated. Sure, an animal that spends most of its time rolling in its own feces probably won’t be the next Einstein, but most people don’t realize that pigs are more intelligent than they look. The pigs are showing a theory of mind-that is, the ability to understand what other animals are thinking or desiring, a talent previously observed only in chimpanzees and dogs. Typical costs:There are dozens of miniature pig breeders who advertise pigs with a wide variety of names: miniature, micro, nano, mini or teacup. The pigs advertised from these breeders typically cost $700-$1,500, and most breeders require a $100-$250 deposit on the piglets.

Breeders sell pot-bellied pigs for $600-$800 and will provide registration, vaccination records, and spay or neuter the pig. Neutering or spaying a potbellied pig typically costs $300-$500.What should be included:The potbellied pig should come with registration and vaccination records, Most pigs also are delivered to their owners already spayed or neutered. Healthy Pigs sells a variety of pig feeds made specifically for potbellied pigs. Discounts:The North American Potbellied Pig Association has a voucher program to help pay for spaying and neutering of pet pigs. Guinea Pigs living in the wild quickly learned for survival, not to look sick or vulnerable, as this was sure to mean an early death to them.

For older guinea pigs this does still need to be checked about once a week. Jodi Adams is a pet hobbyist that enjoys writing and sharing information about guinea pigs.

Health & Senior Services

Annually, 7,000 to 8,000 rabid animals are detected in the United States, with more than 90 percent of the cases in wild animals. Although rabies is transmitted to humans almost entirely through bites from rabid animals, contamination of open wounds or mucous membranes with saliva or nervous tissue from a rabid animal could potentially constitute an exposure. Human deaths in the United States have become relatively rare because: effective vaccinations have been available for dogs and cats since the 1950s, public health practices such as animal quarantine and testing are aggressively pursued, and improved anti-rabies shots have been developed for persons exposed to rabies. Rabies in both animals and humans in Missouri is reportable to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services¹. Information pertaining to animal rabies vaccines as well as the prevention and control of rabies in animals is available in the Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control, 2008².

Testing an animal for rabies requires that it be euthanized, since sections of the brain must be examined for the presence of the rabies virus. Domestic animals: Identify and, if possible, confine the biting animal. Wild animals: Identify and, if possible, confine the biting animal for rabies testing. The effectiveness of animal vaccines is the main reason for the nationwide decline in rabies cases among people and domestic animals. Avoid contact with stray pets and wild animals; do not keep wild animals or wild animal crosses as pets.

Report wild animals exhibiting unusual behavior or stray pets to animal control officials. Ask an adult to call an animal control officer or animal rescue group for help with the sick animal.

America’s past of human experiments revealed

U.S. officials also acknowledged there had been dozens of similar experiments in the United States – studies that often involved making healthy people sick. Attitude similar to Nazi experiments Some of these studies, mostly from the 1940s to the ’60s, apparently were never covered by news media. In federally funded studies in the 1940s, noted researcher Dr. W.

Paul Havens Jr. exposed men to hepatitis in a series of experiments, including one using patients from mental institutions in Middletown and Norwich, Conn. Havens, a World Health Organization expert on viral diseases, was one of the first scientists to differentiate types of hepatitis and their causes. A search of various news archives found no mention of the mental patients study, which made eight healthy men ill but broke no new ground in understanding the disease. Researchers in the mid-1940s studied the transmission of a deadly stomach bug by having young men swallow unfiltered stool suspension.

For a study in 1957, when the Asian flu pandemic was spreading, federal researchers sprayed the virus in the noses of 23 inmates at Patuxent prison in Jessup, Md., to compare their reactions to those of 32 virus-exposed inmates who had been given a new vaccine. Studies using prisoners were uncommon in the first few decades of the 20th century, and usually performed by researchers considered eccentric even by the standards of the day. Last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ inspector general reported that between 40 and 65 percent of clinical studies of federally regulated medical products were done in other countries in 2008, and that proportion probably has grown. Syphilis study These issues were still being debated when, last October, the Guatemala study came to light.

In the 1946-48 study, American scientists infected prisoners and patients in a mental hospital in Guatemala with syphilis, apparently to test whether penicillin could prevent some sexually transmitted disease. To focus on federally funded international studies, the commission has formed an international panel of about a dozen experts in ethics, science and clinical research. Some experts say that given such a tight deadline, it would be a surprise if the commission produced substantive new information about past studies.

How dogs could help us explore our own gut health

Scientists are looking to another animal that they argue has an even more similar gut microbiome to that of humans: humans’ best friend, the dog. Luis Pedro Coelho – who currently works in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany – plus colleagues at the EMBL and the Nestlé Purina Research laboratories in St. Louis, MO, hypothesize that dogs may be also be our best friends when it comes to learning more about our own gut health. Their research, the results of which are now published in the journal Microbiome, indicates that dogs’ gut microbiomes overlap a lot more with own than those of mice or pigs. The study – which was co-funded by the Nestlé Purina PetCare Company – was a randomized controlled trial, for which the scientists selected 64 dogs of two breeds: beagle and Labrador retriever.

Over an initial period of 4 weeks, all of these dogs were fed the same commonly available dog food sold on the market. The dogs were randomly divided into two groups: one that was to only receive food that was high in protein content and low in carbs, and another that was fed a low-protein, high-carb diet. This allowed them to assess how similar these microbiomes were to each other in terms of their genetic content, plus how the dogs’ microbiomes were altered by changing diets. The team was surprised to find that the microbiomes of dogs were much more similar to the human gut microbiome than those of mice and pigs. They found a 20 percent overlap between the murine and human gut microbiomes and a 33 percent overlap between our gut microbiomes and those of pigs, but a 63 percent overlap between dogs’ gut microbiomes and our own.

Overweight dogs responded more strongly to a high-protein diet than their slender counterparts, presenting more drastic changes in the composition of their gut microbiomes. Looking at the results of their study, the researchers believe that, in the future, humans’ best friend may be able to help us gain a better understanding of the mechanisms at play in our own health. These findings suggest that dogs could be a better model for nutrition studies than pigs or mice, and we could potentially use data from dogs to study the impact of diet on human gut microbiota.

Polluting Pigs Hit With Big Penalty – Health Advice Guide

In 2014, more than 500 North Carolina residents brought suit against the company, saying the operations and manure lagoons were harming their health and lowering property values. The families owned their properties prior to the farm moving into town, and when operations started in 1995, it was all downhill from there. The creation of new CAFO lagoons and the spray systems were banned in 2007, but older farms were allowed to continue their use. Further, while family and individually owned farms made up 83 percent of pig operations, they accounted for just 41 percent of sales. Corporations, which own just 8 percent of pig farms, accounted for 34 percent of sales.

In North Carolina, an EWG analysis revealed that 160,000 residents live within half a mile of a pig or poultry farm.10 Further, court documents used in the plaintiffs’ case against Smithfield revealed the results of a study that detected the presence of pig-manure DNA on the exterior walls of 14 out of 17 homes near the company’s CAFOs. Someone pays the price of production, and for far too long, that burden has been on the rural communities that are home to North Carolina’s factory farms. The AGA standard allows for greater transparency and conformity15 and is intended to ensure the humane treatment of animals and meet consumer expectations about grass fed meat and dairy, while being feasible for small farmers to achieve. The AGA logo on your meat and dairy ensures the animals were born and raised on American family farms. Whether you do so for ethical, environmental or health reasons – or all of the above – I encourage you to support the small family farms in your area.

If you wouldn’t want to visit the farm personally – or live near it – it’s a major red flag that you shouldn’t get your meat from it either. If you don’t have small farms in your area, you can often find free-ranging, pastured meat, organically fed and locally marketed, at farmers markets and food co-ops.

Raising Pigs For Beginners Guide

A pig farm can be a lucrative business if you know the ins and outs of about how to raise pigs. If you compare that to the country’s population which is more than 315,000,000 as of January of the current year, that’s a possible 105 million pigs needed to feed each American. Another thing you should take care of is where you’ll put your pigs. Pigs in enclosures have more tender meat as compared to grazers which tend to have tougher meat because of the muscles that often develop. If you’re keeping pigs for meat, you’ll need to feed them right for them to become bigger, meatier and more profitable.

You should also be aware of what not to feed your pigs. >> Learn about the guide which help me to raise pigs correctly over the years here <<. One more important tip on how to raise pigs properly is to provide them access to water. Be prepared to clean their water troughs regularly as pigs like to clean themselves in the water. Even if you originally planned on keeping pigs for meat, you can still profit from breeding. These tips on raising pigs is only a guide for you to kick off your business venture.

As you go along, you will harvest enough knowledge on how to raise pigs which you can use for your pig farm to thrive and provide you with more income.

Gestation and Farrowing Crates for Pigs Some pork farms use gestation and farrowing crates or stalls for pregnant sows. Gestation crates are individual housing for sows during the time of pregnancy. Gestation crates are used so that individual sows can be fed relative to their individual needs and to reduce the impact of aggressive behaviors seen in group housing. A farrowing crate is a penning system which has an area for the sow and areas for the pigs. Farrowing crates have been designed to reduce the number of pigs which are accidentally laid or stepped on by the sow.

Farrowing crates provide a cooler area for the sow and warmer areas for the young pigs. The flooring is designed to keep the pigs dry which reduces the spread of enteric diseases. Farrowing crates also allow the pork producer to assist in the birth process of pigs. Research has found that both gestation crates and group housing systems have positive and negative effects on animal well being. In terms of gestation crates, they can reduce aggressive behaviors and allow for more precise individual feeding management of sows.

Farrowing crates reduce preweaning mortality – and provide a warm dry environment for the pigs which improves their health status and well being.

Is guinea pig butt swollen is it constipated

Before I can explain what that means, I need to explain certain anatomy of a guinea pig. It traps the soft poop pellets that a guinea pig needs to eat to regain some of it’s B-vitamins while the harder poop that has no nutritional benefit to the guinea pig are pooped out of the rectum. As a guinea pig ages, the skin of the perineal sac becomes stretched out, making it extremely hard to the guinea pig to expel these droppings. They build up in the perineal sac and can plug up the anus, making digestion difficult and making the guinea pig vitamin B deficient because he can no longer eat these benificial droppings. You will have to clean out the impaction yourself as your cavy cannot do this on his own.

Potbellied Pigs: Are the Lardiest Pets a Health Hazard?

Pigs – even the domesticated potbellied kind – are on a long list of pets that are prohibited from living in New York dwellings. Animal experts say living with any large animal can pose hazards to small children, and parents should exercise caution with a swaggering tub of lard – even a domesticated pig. Pigs can carry ringworm or bacteria that cause intestinal illnesses in humans. Finck, who rallied her town of Bradenton, Fla., to change ordinances, allowing pet owners to keep pigs legally, agrees that pet pigs are not for everyone, and especially not for city dwellers. She owns four potbellied pigs, two of them living indoors.

Potbellied pigs were popular during the 1980s, but then went out of fashion because of the destruction factor. Clooney Mourns Max Actor George Clooney shared his Hollywood home with a 300-pound potbellied pig until Max the star went to hog heaven at the age of 18, after suffering from arthritis and partial blindness. Rivaled in intelligence only by primates, whales and dolphins, pigs learn faster than dogs, and can even be trained to count. Pet pigs are reasonably priced – at less than $500, no more than a purebred dog – although there is the bill for copious amounts of food. Pigs only shed their coats once a year, when they lose their bristles in the spring.

Like other domesticated animals, pigs need all their inoculations and health checks. Still, some pet owners are more realistic about a pig’s ability to love back.

How to Feed Guinea Pigs: Easy-To-Follow Feeding Schedule

Between the fruits and veggies, the hay and pellets, the lettuce and well, anything else they can nibble on guinea pigs are truly big-time eaters. With its low nutritional value and high nitrate content, iceberg can be dangerous for guinea pigs since it often causes diarrhea and leads to dehydration. Like humans, guinea pigs cannot generate Vitamin C. When there’s a lack of this vitamin in their diet, they can contract scurvy, a condition that causes them to become very sick and possibly die. Potatoes and their skins, along with rhubarb leaves, have toxins and are considered hazardous to guinea pigs.

Hen on Sow Over the years I have heard a lot of people say that pigs will kill chickens and they can’t be kept together. We keep our pigs and chickens together, along with ducks and geese and in the past guineas. I think the reason some people have had problems with pigs killing chickens has to do with them keeping the pigs penned up. They have plenty to eat, unlimited free feed of pasture/hay and whey. By penning the pigs people may be creating corners and tight spots where chickens can’t get away from a nosey pig.

Then between the pig being hungry, bored and the chicken not being able to easily get away they get chicken PgNuggets. Since our chickens can easily get away, and they’re highly mobile, the pigs never learn to hunt chickens. The good thing about keeping pigs and chickens together is the chickens clean up after the pigs, break up manure patties and eat flies. This organic pest control works wonderfully and avoids the need to resort to pesticides. Outdoors: 70°F/47°F Partially Sunny, Some Thunder, Light Rain.Tiny Cottage: 71°F/67°F.

Skinny Pig, Guinea Pig Care and Keeping Hairless Guinea Pigs

The Skinny Pig is a very unusual, yet an increasingly popular breed of Guinea Pig. There are actually two types of Hairless Guinea Pig, this one and another called the Baldwin Guinea Pig. Skinny Pigs are as curious and mischievous as any other breed of Guinea pig, but some owners and breeders claim that they are more outgoing. Skinny Pigs do not require the brushing that other Guinea pigs need, but they do have certain special needs. The Skinny Pig has almost no hair on most of its body.

The Skinny pig can display any of the basic colors and patterns of the Guinea pig. Be sure to provide your guinea pig with a good home and a proper diet. Guinea pigs need plenty of exercise and they also love to play. Guinea pigs are social creatures and will like to have a companion. Skinny Pigs are becoming easier to find, but breeders may be hard to come by in some areas.

Guinea Pigs come in many varieties and are readily available at pet stores, shelters, and rescues. A healthy guinea pig will have brilliant eyes, good sound teeth, and a healthy coat.

What is the scientific name for guinea pigs

The name is derived from ‘Cabiai’ in the language of the Galibi tribe of French Guiana. The origin of ‘Guinea’ is hard to explain other than they may have been brought to Europe by way of Guinea. The Guinea Pig does not originate from Guinea but from the Andes where they were domesticated as early as 5000 BC. It may be that the introduction to Europe was by way of the Spanish up to 1532 as well as Dutch and English traders.

Guinea Pig Health Kit Supplies: Part 4 of 6: Skin Issues and Cuts, Scrapes, Bites

Mr. Chairman, Ranking Member Specter, distinguished members of the committee, Vietnam Veterans of America is very pleased to have the opportunity to share our views with you today on a topic that has been at the very core of VVA’s mission from day one: investigating toxic exposures among America’s veterans. If we are to be certain that all data that may effect the health of American veterans is to be available for the veterans and their physicians, the Congress must create such a standing declassification review panel immediately. Such a move would also help to restore trust and confidence among veterans in the federal government and its response to veteran’s health issues. The components of the initiative will be a provider education program leading to certification in veterans’ health; a comprehensive military history that will be coded in a registry and be available for education, outcomes analysis, and research; a database for any veteran to register his military history and to automatically receive updated and relevant information on issues of concern to him/her; and a Web site where any veteran or health care provider can access the latest scientific evidence on the health effects of military service.

The visualized cash awards for clinicians passing competency exams in veteran specific health issues has not materialized. We know from internal VA emails obtained via FOIA that senior officials in Public Health and Environmental Hazards resisted creating a registry for Vietnam era SHAD veterans. Meetings with representatives of 60 national veterans groups were conducted, and congressional interest identified. New objectives featured DoD’s commitment to the health and welfare of Gulf War veterans as well as current and future service members and veterans. Target audiences were expanded to include all active duty, Guard, and Reserve and their family members; health care providers in the DoD; plus veterans and community members living and working near military installations.

These same products are regularly distributed around the nation to base libraries, clinics, and family support centers; VA clinics and hospitals; veterans’ support groups such as VFW chapters; regional veterans’ service centers; and even state libraries. The national organization Vietnam Veterans of America is a non-profit veterans membership organization registered as a 501(c)(19) with the Internal Revenue Service. He has served as Consultant on Legislative Affairs to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, and served at various times on the VA Readadjustment Advisory Committee, the Secretary of Labor’s Advisory Committee on Veterans Employment & Training, the President’s Committee on Employment of Persons with Disabilities – Subcommittee on Disabled Veterans, Advisory Committee on veterans’ entrepreneurship at the Small Business Administration, and numerous other advocacy posts in veteran affairs.

Guinea Pig Health Problems Signs That Your Piggie is Unwell Signs of Guinea Pig IllnessesWhile guinea pigs suffer from very few health issues, the diseases and problems affecting guinea pigs can be surprisingly diverse. If any of these symptoms are experienced then it makes sense to seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible, as most guinea pig illnesses will clear up quite quickly if caught early on. Bladder Stones in Guinea Pigs Generally speaking guinea pigs are very healthy and can go through life with little problems. In guinea pigs and primates, including man, one key essential nutrient is vitamin C. The vast majority of other animals can produce their own vitamin C through their intestinal bacterial flora but guinea pigs and primates are unable to do this.

If your pet guinea pig is suffering from barbering, you will need to separate the fighting animals. Feeding your pet guinea pig a nutritious and well-balanced diet can prevent hair loss due to dietary deficiencies. For true barbering, separating the affected animals, minimizing stress, weaning baby guinea pigs from their mothers early, and feeding guinea pigs long-stemmed hay may prevent barbering behaviors. Guinea pigs very very rarely carry diseases that can pass to humans. The only health issue I would even think about really is allergies, as many people have allergy issues with guinea pig dander, which is not the guinea’s fault nor yours.

Guinea pigs really arn’t health hazards like TV shows and urban legends try to pin on. Guinea pigs are actually very good pets and are very clean as long as you care for the animal properly. The public from eating the carcasses of the dead pigs have failed.

How To Raise A Happy Guinea Pig Essay

Not only are guinea pigs extremely social creatures, they love the company of others. Guinea pigs need attention, and if you have just one, your guinea pig is going to get lonely very fast, and cry for your attention more often. If you’re going to just get a guinea pig, sex doesn’t matter too much. By nature, female guinea pigs are going to be more docile and less active, while their male counterparts are going to have more energy and need more exercise. A common misconception with male guinea pigs is that if you put two in the same cage, they’re going to fight to the death.

Two male guinea pigs will fight if they don’t have enough cage space, but given plenty room, each guinea pig will have his own territory and be content with it. If you have two male guinea pigs, you cannot introduce a female guinea pig to the cage. Two females in the same cage will get along well, but you may find that they will ‘bicker’ a bit over food and water. The female acknowledges that the male is dominant, and the male accepts the female as his, and act peacefully towards her. The female cycle is only 18 days, and the gestation of guinea pigs are only two months – while this is relatively long for rodents, it’s very possible that two lively guinea pigs can give birth to literally dozens of puppies in just a year.

Many pet stores will have at least one cage of guinea pigs, if not two or more. It’s simply that guinea pigs give birth a lot, and there is a demand for the puppies they produce.

A Guide to Guinea Pig Health Issues

This guide lists some of the common problems and symptoms to look for. One of the most common problems that can occur with a guinea pig is scurvy due to a lack of vitamin C. Unlike other pets, they can not synthesize their own vitamin C and must get it from their diet. It’s not always easy to detect if your guinea pig has lost weight. A few ounces of lost weight could lead to a problem.

You should know what the normal weight of your guinea pig is and check it occasionally. Be aware of the natural behaviors your guinea pig exhibits. Be aware that there are two medications that should never be administered to a guinea pig. Never assume that your veterinarian is familiar with treating guinea pigs. Although guinea pigs are delicate creatures from a health stand point it’s very easy to care for a happy healthy guinea pig if you know how.

You can avoid many problems by following a simple guideline for their care. Brian M Parker has raised guinea pigs from his childhood. You can visit his site for a free mini-course on guinea pig information.

Using Pigs to Improve Health of Humans – The Van Trump Report

Regenerative medicine is a broad field that includes tissue engineering but also incorporates research on self-healing – where the body uses its own systems, sometimes with help foreign biological material to recreate cells and rebuild tissues and organs. UVA explains that while there has been a tremendous amount of money and time spent on research and development of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, the ability to manufacture the materials on a large scale does not yet exist. Their hope is that the partnership with Smithfield can change that. Smithfield Bioscience is a business within Smithfield Foods that focuses on biotechnology in areas of human therapeutics, tissue fabrication and regenerative medicine. The Smithfield and UVA research is part of a consortium of around 100 organizations collaborating under the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute which aims to accelerate research and manufacturing innovations in the field.

Nipah Virus Infection

Nipah virus infection is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans. The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus. NiV was first identified during an outbreak of disease that took place in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998. In subsequent NiV outbreaks, there were no intermediate hosts. In Bangladesh in 2004, humans became infected with NiV as a result of consuming date palm sap that had been contaminated by infected fruit bats.

Human-to-human transmission has also been documented, including in a hospital setting in India. NiV infection in humans has a range of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory syndrome and fatal encephalitis. NiV is also capable of causing disease in pigs and other domestic animals. The primary treatment for human cases is intensive supportive care.

Help Shut Down Hog ‘House of Horrors’ Where 3,000 Pigs Are Stabbed and Beaten Regularly!

As an animal lover, it’s hard to express the feelings that emerge when we hear about animal abuse – no matter how many times you’re exposed to it. Sadly, it happens day after day, in every corner of our great big world. The cruelty witnessed and caught on tape was inexcusable and downright heartbreaking. A Care2 Petition is calling on the German government to not only punish the parties involved but to shut down the entire operation. Shutting down Schweinehochhaus may seem extreme but the footage clearly shows horrific abuse throughout the facility.

Workers were seen smacking unwanted piglets against the ground to crack their skulls while mothers were seen with gaping wounds. Pigs were stabbed, beaten, kicked, and even clubbed and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. The pigs are kept in the worst conditions imaginable with quarters so tight a mother that had just given birth nearly crushed her own baby. Three years ago, Schweinehochhaus’ operating company was charged with animal cruelty after an exposé led by Peifer. Enough is enough, and the German government needs to step in and show that profits are not more important than innocent life and that this is not what they want their country to be known for.

Do You Know About Guinea Pig Sounds?

Some people might consider guinea pig speak just random sounds or noises, but people who share their lives with guinea pigs know better. Some people might not know that small mammal pets like guinea pigs also make sounds. No two guinea pigs are alike, so while most guinea pigs make several of the same sounds, nuances can change the total repertoire. One scientific study places the number of guinea pigs sounds at 11. A guinea pig rescue includes 9 guinea pigs sounds on its website.

Observation is key to determining the meaning of guinea pig sounds. Guinea pigs are social animals, and they can be talking to you, other guinea pigs, or both when making noises. As a general guide, start with the following guinea pig basic sound symbolism. If a guinea pig suddenly develops a new sound, it might be cause to consult your veterinarian. The Guinea Lynx forum had a discussion about hooting guinea pigs, which could indicate a heart problem.

Guinea pig savvy means that the veterinarian regularly treats guinea pigs. A guinea pig who is usually vocal but suddenly becomes quiet, or vice versa, might be signaling that there’s a problem.

If you have any reason to suspect she is dehydrated she may need a subcutaneous injection of rehydration fluids as a matterof urgency. Sorry don;t mean to scaremonger – but dehydration is an oft unrecongnised symptom/cause of death in piggies to the uninitiated. As for the reference – here is the guina lynx reference for heart problems with the fortekor/fruseamide dosages and a number of case histories/X rays etc -. The rest – well that is down to me and my specialist exotics vet’s experience with my own pigs… so i will need to give you their phone number for your vet to ring mine – happy to speak to your vet direct and then give them the number.

For your vet’s info – my bone fides are that I have a PhD in microbial pathogenicity , have experience wth small rodents and have a damn good exotics vet who I work [*]WITH…. in a collaborative environment[/*] for the benefit and continuing good health of my piggies. P.S. Your vet should know the difference between pulmonary oedma and pleural efusion – if they don;t then change your vet!

Guinea pig health check ~ 5 simple steps | YasminesCavies

I was an ObamaCare guinea pig

For the past three years, since leaving a job at a non-profit organization and then exhausting my COBRA, I have relied on the individual insurance market to get coverage for myself, my partner and our daughter. Three years ago when I was shopping for insurance, there weren’t that many options to choose from. So I logged onto the New York State health insurance exchange website. Early on the first Saturday morning following the launch of the exchange site – probably because the rest of the state was still asleep – I was able to log-in and complete my registration and check out all my options for insurance. There were literally 50 plans that were better than my current insurance – both with lower premiums, lower out-of-pocket costs and better coverage.

There were ten plans with a higher premium than my current insurance, but with lower deductibles. While the exchange site was user-friendly and explained my options in a clear and simple way, picking an insurance plan isn’t exactly like ordering a hamburger. Plus in the past, I spent several days looking for and comparing insurance options. Counter to wild stories about the government taking over health care, the exchange was simply a public portal to a range of all-private insurance options. One of the most exciting things is the new companies providing private insurance through the exchange; I’ll be watching the reviews over the next year and might change plans when re-enrollment comes around.

As of October 20, the Associated Press reported that 476,000 Americans had filled out insurance applications through the federal and state exchanges. The fact is that ObamaCare has created a private marketplace so that millions of American families like mine can get affordable, quality health insurance while keeping more of our hard-earned money.

Pharmacology US Academic Writers

Students will be provided a copy of the simulation program to work at their own pace for this assignment. The aim of this assignment activity is to provide an opportunity for you to design and perform experiments to investigate the properties of agonist and antagonist drugs using the isolated ileum of the guinea pig, and investigate the pharmacological effect and mechanism of action of given antagonist drugs on the contractility of isolated guinea pig ileum. Experimental Setup: The software simulates an experimental setup on an isolated piece of guinea pig ileum removed from a freshly killed guinea pig and suspended in warmed and aerated physiological solution called Tyrode’s solution. The tissue is carefully suspended in an organ bath with the bottom end of the tissue fixed and the top end attached to a freely moving isotonic lever which is in turn connected to a transducer. The lever responds to the contractions of the longitudinal muscle in the ileum and the resulting movement is converted into an electrical signal by the transducer.

The electrical signals are then sent to a chart recorder which displays the signals as a trace. The organ bath is kept at a constant temperature of 37C by means of a water jacket which circulates water at the required temperature. A variety of drugs are added into the organ bath to observe the effect on.2 intestinal contractility. The set up also allows examining how antagonists can interfere with agonists at tissue level. Experimental Procedure: When performing experiments in which you are.
