Federal inspectors fault National Jewish Health for treatment of guinea pigs during smoking study

When the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a routine inspection of the lab at National Jewish Health in Denver earlier this year, it discovered research that had gone off the rails. One group of guinea pigs had been exposed to more smoke – five hours a day for six days – than the study’s approved guidelines called for. Two guinea pigs were described in research records that an inspector reviewed as having bloody discharge from the nose. On Monday, the animal-rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a complaint with officials at the National Institutes of Health, seeking more information about the study.

Alka Chandna, a PETA vice president who specializes in laboratory oversight, said people don’t need to care about the suffering of guinea pigs to find the inspection report troubling. The departures from previously approved study protocols also places the research’s validity into question. In an email, a National Jewish spokesman said that the institution had made fixes as a result of the report. National Jewish Health is a 119-year-old health center focused on respiratory diseases. It also is a thriving research center, and Dormuth said National Jewish sometimes uses animals in its research.

There are about 20 research facilities in Colorado registered with the USDA to conduct studies on animals. Critical violations – which indicate that an animal died or was seriously harmed as the result of the violation – are uncommon. The USDA hit the University of Colorado with a critical violation in 2016 after two research rabbits escaped from an enclosure.

Common Guinea Pig Health Problems

Flystrike is a potentially fatal condition which occurs when flies lay their eggs around a guinea pig’s anus. Symptoms to look out for include eggs and maggots around a guinea pig’s anus, wounds and skin loss. Pets suffering from obesity, dental problems, diarrhoea, arthritis and skin wounds are at high risk of flystrike as flies are attracted to guinea pigs suffering from dirty bottoms or wet fur. Guinea pigs living in dirty hutches are also susceptible, as flies like damp and smelly conditions. Guinea pigs with flystrike are often given antibiotics to help prevent infection and some vets also use anti-parasitic products to try and penetrate the skin and kill any remaining maggots.

There are several different species of mites, however the most common one to affect guinea pigs is Trixacarus caviae, which causes mange. A variety of treatments are available to help treat guinea pigs infested with mites. Guinea pigs with ringworm will have circular, hairless, sore spots. You may notice your guinea pig scratching excessively, biting, suffering hair loss, and in a worse case scenario, suffering seizures. If you think your guinea pig is suffering from mange, take him to the vet immediately.

Guinea pigs are unique in that they can’t produce Vitamin C themselves and are reliant on Vitamin C in their diet. To help prevent Vitamin C deficiency always feed your pet a complete food for guinea pigs.

10 Reasons Why Guinea Pigs Make Great Pets

Guinea pigs have always been one of the exotic pets I recommend most, especially for families considering a pet for the first time. Since guinea pigs are from cool climates, they don’t do well in hot, humid conditions. Just remember, unless you want to end up with several little additional guinea pigs, you’ll need to separate males from females even before they are a month old! Not as fragile as rabbits and generally less skittish than smaller rodents like hamsters and gerbils, guinea pigs are wonderful pets for elementary-school-age kids and older. Younger children should always be supervised around guinea pigs, just as with any other pet.

While most hamsters, gerbils and rats live only two to three years, on average, most guinea pigs live five to seven years and some have even lived into their teens. Many people don’t realize this, but guinea pigs have a lot of personality. Some guinea pigs are shy; others are bold and dominant. Just because two guinea pigs look the same doesn’t mean they’ll act the same. Guinea pigs purr!

Just like cats, guinea pigs make a quiet yet audible vibrating sound when they are happy, often when they are petted gently. Some guinea pigs run forward and backward quickly, while others alternately kick out their front and back legs. Popcorning is unique to guinea pigs and is a fun behavior to watch.

Guinea pig health tips

If you don’t have guinea pigs already, buy at least two animals. Guinea pigs need the company of their own kind as they are socially gregarious creatures. Other pets such as rabbits, or people themselves, are no substitute for a guinea pig partner. Bear in mind that male guinea pigs will only tolerate each other when they can’t see, hear or smell a female. Avoid stress with guinea pigs – symptoms include a tendency to flee, frequent stiffening, aggression or fur or weight loss.

Guinea pigs must eat incessantly – otherwise they can’t utilise and move the nutrition in the gastrointestinal tract. One teaspoonful per animal per day is an ample sufficiency. Clarify whether the vet also treats and knows about guinea pigs. It’s precisely when you’re keeping several guinea pigs that it’s hard to take stock of whether each animal’s eating enough or which one has diarrhoea. That’s why you should scrutinise each animal regularly.

Weigh each animal and note it down to be able to ascertain any changes. Rub the fur dry as best you can! You mustn’t ever bath a guinea pig completely, that would be too stressful for the creature and could make them very ill due to chilling!

Best liquid Vitamin C for guinea pigs?

It sure sounds like you take very good care of your piggies! I have found that the Vit.C drops you get at the pet store are a little less than useless. Not only do the pigs HATE the taste of it, but once the drops hit the water, the chlorine neutralizes it anyway. They are chock full of nasty chemicals and preservatives. I use non-chlorinated water and mix Puritan’s Pride Vit.C crystals in a one-gallon container every morning.

The pigs cannot taste it and this is human grade Vit.C. You can buy it over the internet only. Since you are already feeding Oxbow pellets, I’m sure you know that they already contain stabilized Vit.C in them. Whatever is lost by the pellets due to age or light exposure, will be made up by the daily Vit.C crystals in the water. Lastly, try to feed them veggies that contain lots of Vit.C like bell peppers, strawberries, etc.

Keep trying that orange!! Sometimes, it takes awhile. Experiment with different types of oranges or try breaking off little tiny bits out of the center of the orange slice and put it to his lips to get him to taste it. I’m sure your piggies are thankful they have such a wonderful, responsible owner.

Gorgeous Guineas Piggy Problems

Skin problems are one of the most common reasons that guinea pigs require Veterinary treatment. Often guineas present with both fungal and parasitic problems at the same time and need treating for both. As soon as you see any signs of skin problems, don’t hang about – get a diagnosis from your Vet and get them treated as soon as possible. Guinea pigs have very sensitive skin and are prone to fungal and parasitic problems. Fungal skin problems are particularly common here in the UK.

Guinea pigs are originally from Peru where the climate is warm and dry. Here, there is always moisture in the air – cold and damp in the winter, and hot and humid in the summer. Skin problems frequently occur where a guinea is stressed, ill, or has a depressed immune system. Sometimes skin problems in guineas are mis-diagnosed by Vets. Fungal skin conditions are often treated as if they were caused by Mites, despite the skin condition being presented.

Guineas are then put through the pain of two or three Ivermectin injections, the problem isn’t cured and your guinea is still in a lot of pain and discomfort. Check out our Photo Gallery and see what some of the most common skin problems look like.

Concern over Ebola virus in pigs

A form of Ebola virus has been detected in pigs for the first time, raising concerns it could mutate and pose a new risk to humans. Ebola-Reston virus has only previously been seen in monkeys and humans – and has not caused illness. Researchers are concerned that pigs might provide a melting pot where the virus could mutate into something more menacing for humans. The researchers, from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stress that the virus at present appears to pose no risk to humans. It has been detected in farm workers who tend the infected pigs, and they have shown no signs of illness.

REBOV belongs to the family of filoviruses which usually target primates. These viruses cause viral haemorrhagic fevers, which cause extensive internal bleeding, and can be fatal. The latest study examined tissue samples taken from pigs from different parts of the Philippines suffering from unusually severe respiratory infections. Analysis showed that the animals were infected with widely varying strains of the virus, suggesting it may have circulated widely in pigs even before it was first discovered in monkeys exported to the US from the Philippines in 1989. The researchers said it was possible that REBOV originally emerged in another, as yet unidentified, host.

Pigs are known to provide an ideal host for viruses to mutate. Experts say the potential risk is magnified because they are an essential part of the human food chain, and come into close contact with people.

The wild guinea pig lives on a diet of grasses and leaves and has developed a specialized gut which is adapted for this high fibre and coarse diet. The guinea pig passes the fibre through the gut twice to make sure all the nutrients are absorbed. Vitamin C. Guinea pigs are unique amongst our small pets, as like us, they cannot make their own vitamin C and must get it in their diet. We recommend 50 mg per adult guinea pig per day if there are no vegetables in thier diet, and 25 mg/day for those receiving good amounts of vegetables. 3) It is difficult to know how much Vitamin C the guinea pig has had in a day.

Orchard grass, botanical & mountain hay are also good choices as they are high fibre, low protein hays. Your guinea pig must have 24 hour access to loose hay. Young, pregnant, sick or old guinea pigs should be given more pellets. These are an important source of vitamins, and most pigs love them. Sticking with one or two vegetables may lead to dietary imbalances or problems, even if these are your guinea pig’s favourites.

Do not give larger amounts in an attempt to supply vitamin C. Guinea pig snacks and sweeties, seeds, nuts and biscuits are very unhealthy and should not be given. Upsetting the gut causes bacterial imbalances and may kill your guinea pig.

Bill Gates’ Philanthropy: 30,000 Indian girls used as guinea pigs to test cancer vaccine

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is praised for its philanthropy around the world, but much of the foundation’s good deeds are merely no-consent vaccine experiments carried out on the poor. Under the pretense of providing healthcare to third world countries, the Gates Foundation instead coerces tens of thousands of children to test out various vaccines for pharmaceutical companies. Bill Gate’s massive wealth from selling computers is being redistributed to pharmaceutical research, as human rights-violating corporations such as Merck and GlaxoSmithKline test out new vaccines on multiple thousands of unsuspecting victims. The resulting health problems have been noticeable and devastating, raising questions about the sinister motives behind the Gates Foundation and their extraordinary vaccine push. Young girls’ health rapidly deteriorated following Gates vaccine push.

The shot these young girls received was an HPV vaccine manufactured by Merck and administered by the state’s health department. This time the Gates Foundation carried out their humanitarian healthcare mission by providing the HPV vaccine called Cervarix, made by Glaxo SmithKline. Having no idea that they were being signed up for vaccine trials, thousands of young girls were injected with these experimental vaccines purported to prevent cervical cancer. The same problem broke out among girls in Colombia, where the same vaccine had been doled out to the young girls there. NGO activists speak out about young girls being used as guinea pigs for vaccine experiments.

The group coordinated with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to test the cervical cancer vaccines on thousands of young females across India and Africa. Whistleblowers from another NGO, Sama, witnessed the horror and spoke out about what was really going on, revealing how the young girls were being used as guinea pigs for vaccine trials all under the guise of receiving healthcare.

Aromatherapy Skin Care For Guinea Pigs

Chrissie is the founder and owner of Gorgeous Guineas, the world’s first company to create aromatherapy products specifically developed for guinea pigs. Since March is Adopt a Guinea Pig month, I thought it would be an extra appropriate time to learn a bit more about Chrissie and Gorgeous Guineas. She adopted a guinea pig from Reading Guinea Pig Rescue and became friends with Karen who headed up the rescue. At that time I had no idea that you could adopt guinea pigs, but in 2002, there was an article in the paper and Reading Guinea Pig Rescue were looking for an experienced home for a feisty long-haired sow called Florence. My twin passions in life are aromatherapy and guinea pigs and these two worlds collided at the end of 2002.

Shortly after I adopted Florence, 17 guineas with bad fungal skin problems landed at Reading Guinea Pig Rescue. The guineas soon started improving with some nice gentle oils and shampoos – their crusty skin started to heal, leaving nice healthy skin behind. The great thing about working with guinea pig rescues is that they usually have guineas coming in with skin problems, so there are always plenty of opportunities to see how effective the products were. There are also my contacts around the world that run guinea pig rescues / blogs / guinea pig forums where they are happy to recommend Gorgeous Guineas products. The Lice ‘n’ Easy Shampoo was requested to wash away lice and other external parasites that are commonly found on guinea pigs.

Please always think about adopting wherever possible and find a reputable guinea pig rescue where they will match pigs to people and offer sensible advice about how to care for guineas to give them a good life. Pimples on Mr Melt’s skin were evidence that burrowing Mange Mites were present, causing much discomfort for the guinea pig and resulting in scratching.

Researchers are keeping pig brains alive outside the body

In a step that could change the definition of death, researchers have restored circulation to the brains of decapitated pigs and kept the reanimated organs alive for as long as 36 hours. The feat offers scientists a new way to study intact brains in the lab in stunning detail. It also inaugurates a bizarre new possibility in life extension, should human brains ever be kept on life support outside the body. During the event, Yale University neuroscientist Nenad Sestan disclosed that a team he leads had experimented on between 100 and 200 pig brains obtained from a slaughterhouse, restoring their circulation using a system of pumps, heaters, and bags of artificial blood warmed to body temperature. There was no evidence that the disembodied pig brains regained consciousness.

The Yale system, called BrainEx, involves connecting a brain to a closed loop of tubes and reservoirs that circulate a red perfusion fluid, which is able to carry oxygen to the brain stem, the cerebellar artery, and areas deep in the center of the brain. It’s well known that a comatose brain can be kept alive for at least decades. Less well explored are artificial means of maintaining a brain wholly separated from its body. To answer that question, the scientists checked for signs of complex activity in the pig brains using a version of EEG, or electrodes placed on the brain’s surface. The pigs’ brains were attached to the BrainEx device roughly four hours after the animals were decapitated.

Sestan told the NIH it is conceivable that the brains could be kept alive indefinitely and that steps could be attempted to restore awareness. Consciousness isn’t necessary for the type of experiments on brain connections that scientists hope to carry out on living ex vivo brains.

Guinea Pig Vet Exam

Safari Veterinary Care Centers in League City, TX

The guinea pig or cavy, Cavia porcellus, is the domesticated form of a rodent found in the wild in South America. Diet: Guinea pigs have an absolute dietary requirement for vitamin C, without it they may become very ill. A pelleted diet formulated specifically for guinea pigs should comprise the primary diet. New foods should be introduced gradually, one at a time, to make sure your guinea pig does not develop diarrhea. Do everything you can to avoid such an accident in the first place i.e.

keep her away from male GPs. The gestation period for guinea pigs is approximately 60-70 days. Guinea pigs do not normally require assistance in giving birth. Guinea pigs become sexually mature as early as four weeks of age so it is important to separate the different sexes by then. Use of medications without veterinary supervision may result in the death of your pig as many medications used in other animals can be deadly to GPs.

Blood in urine: Bloody urine may appear red or brown. Diarrhea: Diarrhea can result from feeding your guinea pig a new type of vegetable, or an unusually large quantity of fresh vegetables. Your guinea pig may have skin mites, fleas, a bacterial infection or a fungus, such as ringworm. Lameness due to Vitamin C deficiency may be seen after only 2 weeks on a deficient diet with fast growing young and pregnant pigs being affected first. Loss of appetite: Being small animals, guinea pigs usually eat constantly and metabolize food very fast, so if an illness or other condition is preventing them from eating they rapidly loose weight and become seriously debilitated in a short time.

Most miniature pigs seen in the United States are descendants of the feral pigs from Southeast Asia, the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and Africa. The pigs most frequently seen as pets are descendants of the Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pigs, introduced into the United States in 1985. These pigs have a sway back, short wrinkled faces, pot bellies, small ears, straight tails and black coloring with occasional white markings or they may have white skin and range in color from red to white to black and white. Behavior: Pigs have a difficult time handling excess heat and cold. Pigs often choose to urinate and defecate in one place they are easily housebroken.

Play time activities are important to keep your pig from becoming bored and diverting the rooting to items easily damaged such as carpet, flooring and furniture. Remember pigs can root under fences and destroy well-manicured lawns and flower gardens. Adult pigs are most comfortable at temperatures between 60-70°F while those without hair are more comfortable at 65-75°F. Extreme cold is not tolerated and outdoor pigs must be provided with shelter and supplemental heat in the winter. The smaller the pig, the more sensitive to cold it is.

Diet: Pig feeds are targeted to certain life stages i.e. starter, grower, maintenance and breeder. Pigs 4-8 weeks of age should be fed 0.6-1.4 lbs. Once weaned, pigs can be started on second stage nursery diets.

Guinea Pig Breeds, Behavior and Breeders

Choosing a guinea pig is a hard process because there is a huge variety of guinea pig breeds. Guinea pigs of different breeds can have completely opposite personalities. A particular guinea pig breed requires a special care. The basic classification can be made according to the hair type: short haired guinea pig or long haired guinea pig. If you saw a guinea pig with a crest on the forehead of the same color as a fur, you just identified a second type of Crested guinea pig – English Crested.

Just like any other breed, Himalayan guinea pig was domesticated in South America. Out of all guinea pig breeds Silkie is the most gentle. In contrast to Silkie, Coronet has a large rosette in a middle of its forehead. This striking feature is a result of crossbreeding of Silkie with Crested guinea pig in the 18th century in England. The hair can cover piggy’s head.

Angora Guinea Pig. It is very common in European countries, especially Germany, so many guinea pig owners around the world are not familiar with this breed. Merino guinea pig is a relatively recent addition to guinea pig’s world. It is a curly and long-haired version of Coronet guinea pig.

It’s almost impossible to gauge the age of an adult guinea pig after they are full grown. Just like us, guinea pigs age differently and at different rates. Signs of aging appear earlier in some guinea pigs, and later in others. A senior guinea pig may lose muscle tone and weight. Senior guinea pigs spend more time sleeping and less time exploring, so it’s important to make their environment a cozy one.

Senior guinea pigs tend to stay in one spot longer, so be sure to spot clean daily and change the bedding more frequently, if needed. One of the easiest ways to pick up on a health issue early is to weigh weekly, and more frequently in aging or ill guinea pigs. Older guinea pigs can suffer from heart failure, kidney trouble, and overgrown molars, among other ailments – all that begin with vague symptoms. Female guinea pigs are prone to ovarian cysts as they age. Male guinea pigs come with their own problems later in life.

Senior guinea pigs can be allowed some extra treat foods like raw oats and corn on the cob. Senior guinea pigs can still enjoy satisfying lives and even stronger bonds with you.

3 Ways to Care for an Elderly Guinea Pig

Nizoral shampoo is ideal, leave it on the pig for 3 minutes to let it soak into the skin. Don’t be surprised if more hair is lost during the shampooing session. You must shampoo the whole pig, just be careful around the eyes and mouth, it doesn’t taste very nice! Polytar is also good for removing flaky skin. He tends to gorge on water and get very bloated and his poop becomes impacted.

Reduce his water intake by getting a water bowl and only filling it halfway. Distilled water should be avoided because it can leach nutrients from the body. Your best bet would be to run tap water through an activated charcoal filter. I have a 5-year-old male guinea pig who gets constipated sometimes. Every now and then he will be making hurt, squeaking sounds in his cage because he is having a hard time pooping.

If you are feeding him a brand that might be hard for him to eat, consider changing the food brand. If that doesn’t work, put a floor heater to where he usually eats. It will help him digest better, and it might even help with other things, too!

If the guinea pig get snack at the exit of the maze, then this guinea pig will be more active and. Pig blood components are extensively used, and isolated organ preparations such as guinea pig lung and intestine are widely used in research to develop new medicines. The study of Guinea pig diet are really useful for nutrition studies because they require. One of the hardest one is how to teach the guinea pig to run the maze and are there any specific behaviour that can affect them. Let’s the guinea pigs explore the maze for a while to make them use to it.

Placing the snack in the exit of the maze for the first guinea pig. Remove the snack and let the second guinea pig run the maze. The maze exit to get the attention from the guinea pig. Guinea pig needs a huge space to live, at least 2 meters square per one of the guinea pig. Guinea pigs would be provided toys and hides to reduce guinea pigs’ stress.

For the guinea pig would not be too big or too small for guinea pigs. The maze’s lane would not be too small to make guinea pigs to.

Could New Pig Virus Pose Threat to People?

WEDNESDAY, May 16, 2018 – A new virus found in pigs may pose a threat to people, new research suggests. Researchers found the virus was able to infect cultured human cells and cells of other species in a lab. The pig virus, known as Porcine deltacoronavirus, was first identified in China in 2012. Two years later, it was discovered in the United States during an outbreak of diarrhea among pigs in Ohio. Young pigs infected with the virus develop severe diarrhea and vomiting that can be deadly.

The ability of a virus to jump between species depends on its ability to find receptors on the cells of people or animals, explained the study’s lead researcher, Scott Kenney. He’s an assistant professor of veterinary preventive medicine at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. To investigate the pig virus’ potential to jump to other species, researchers at Ohio State and Utrecht University in the Netherlands honed in on a particular cellular receptor called aminopeptidase N. The study, published online this week in the journal PNAS, showed the virus could bind to the receptor in human cells, and to cells from cats and chickens. These were cells cultured in a lab setting.

The researchers added that their findings don’t prove that the pig virus can cause disease in other species. The team plans to continue its investigation, looking for antibodies in human blood that would indicate that the pig virus may have already infected people. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides more information on how diseases spread between animals and people.

Guinea Pigs Harbor a Hidden Health Hazard

The bacteria, Chlamydia caviae, normally causes pink eye in guinea pigs. Three adults in the Netherlands wound up hospitalized for pneumonia after contact with guinea pigs resulted in their infection with C. caviae. Dr. Steven Gordon, chair of infectious disease at the Cleveland Clinic, said the cases are a reminder to practice good hygiene around pets.

The two people who landed in the ICU had guinea pigs as pets, and those pets had been sick with respiratory symptoms. The man had two guinea pigs, while one of the women had 25, researchers said. The other woman worked in a veterinary clinic, where she cared for guinea pigs suffering from pink eye and nasal inflammation. Doctors detected Chlamydia bacteria in samples drawn from the patients and figured it was Chlamydia psittaci, a bacteria carried by birds that’s known to cause a form of pneumonia called psittacosis, Ramakers said. The analysis also matched the DNA of C.

caviae in one of the patients’ guinea pigs to the bacteria that had infected its owner. Not all guinea pigs carry C. caviae, but many likely do, Ramakers said. An earlier study found the bacteria’s DNA in 59 out of 123 guinea pigs with eye disease. Don’t give away your favorite pet guinea pig just yet, though.

People who want to protect themselves should get their guinea pigs treated by a vet if their pet appears ill, especially if it is suffering from pink eye or respiratory illness, Gordon said.

Pigs for small farms: Journey to Forever

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Japan says 65% of pigs sent to abattoirs are sick. The farmer chased the pigs out of the house onto the field. Several pigs began digging in the soil with their noses. Pigs had cleared the trees and grass, eaten it all, and quickly turned poor red mountain soil into fertile black soil rich in microorganisms, and the microorganisms then became good food for pigs. He told me that costs are low farming pigs this way, and the pigs grow happily and healthily with plenty of exercise and lots of sunshine.

Pigs bred in modern housing are very prone to white scour – prolonged diarrhoea. Pastured Pigs – Greg Gunthorp of Indiana is a fourth-generation pasture pork producer. Email mailing list for the exchange of ideas about raising pigs on pasture. This is what pigs were made for, not to have rings in their noses. Htm The Kunekune is a cute and friendly little pig from New Zealand, smaller than other pigs and with one other big difference – they’re grass eaters.

Pigs are found everywhere, often kept by peasants, but methods and function differ widely. Also covers scavenging pigs and tethered pigs, and uses of liquid manure and dung.

How To Choose a Healthy Guinea Pig

Determining the optimal dietary lysine:energy ratios for health challenged grow-finish pigs

When pigs become health challenged with a virus like Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, production efficiency and pig wellbeing is reduced that can have a larger economic burden on the U.S. swine industry. How to best feed and manage these health challenged pig flows is poorly understood. Interestingly, the optimum dietary requirements for energy and protein as well as amino acids have not been determined for such health challenged pigs. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of increasing SID Lys:ME on growth performance during a PRRSV challenge.

After the 35 to 49-d growth study, all pigs were fed a common diet until they reached a target market weight of ~127 kg. There were no difference in PRRS serology due to altered Lys:ME diets. Breakpoint analysis showed that the optimal Lys:ME for ADG and G:F was increased up to 136% and 130%, respectively, in PRRSV infected 50 kg BW pigs compared to healthy controls depending on the breakpoint model used. In 25 kg BW pigs the optimal Lys:ME for ADG increased up to 107% as determined by breakpoint analysis; however, optimal Lys:ME for G:F was decreased up to 25% in PRRSV infected pigs. In the 50 kg pigs, the predicted requirement for ADG and G:F in PRRSV pigs using a quadratic model were above the highest Lys:ME diet.

This was similar for G:F in control pigs in the 25 kg BW pigs. Further studies should be conducted to more accurately determine the Lys:ME requirement. Overall, increasing Lys:ME 110-130% above the NRC requirement increased growth performance and feed efficiency in PRRSV infected pigs, and the response was similar between natural and experimental PRRSV infection.

Peter Gurney: Educator of Guinea Pig Lovers

Peter Gurney came to appreciate guinea pigs rather late in life-he was 48 years old when he owned his first cavy. He spent the last 20 years of his life learning everything he could about them, and the best part is that he worked tirelessly to pass his knowledge on to other guinea pig lovers. In trying to take care of his pets, he realised that most veterinarians have a dearth of knowledge about guinea pigs. With her worthy assistance he was able to put together several books about the care and health of guinea pigs-and he educated quite a few small animal veterinarians as well as pet owners. As people like Mrs.

Stanley and Gurney gained knowledge about the best care for guinea pigs and then took the next step of sharing that information, many RCVS vets protested. Gurney participated in a roiling controversy about whether to anaesthetise guinea pigs for dental work. His best accomplishments were the books he put out for every guinea pig owner to own in order to provide the best possible care for pets. This second book is a veritable wealth of information for guinea pig owners, and its infinite supply of information is well illustrated with over 200 photos that make the author’s point easy to understand for people of all ages. In 2006, after successful years advocating for the health and care of guinea pigs-and all animals-Gurney lost his battle with cancer.

Gurney’s website still provides a wealth of information for guinea pig lovers. Every year on the 9th March, which was his birthday, guinea pig lovers all over the world light a candle. If you’d like to do this next March, you can email the Guinea Pigs Daily Digest with your location, and the website will display a map pinpointing all the locations-all over the world-where people still remember Peter Gurney.

Soybean Meal and PRRS in Pigs

The March Soybean Meal INFOsource Newsletter is going to look a little different. This quarter we are not going to discuss current soybean and soybean meal supply and demand data, while these are updated monthly, U.S. farmers are still in the process of determining the number of soybean acres for the coming production season. Soybean Meal and PRRS in PigsThe objective of this swine study was to evaluate whether high levels of soybean meal could modulate the pig’s response to a respiratory disease challenge by reducing systemic viral replication and modulating the immune system. A total of 2,112 pigs weighing about 6 kg were placed into two nursery rooms of 48 pens each under commercial conditions to evaluate the potential of SBM levels in combination with phytase to improve growth and health of weaned pigs originating from a porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome affected sow farm.

The percentage of pigs pulled for medical treatment declined linearly with increasing SBM levels. Soybean meal levels did not affect viral load of PRRS when determined on day 20 or day 42. The researchers concluded that increased levels of SBM may be beneficial in health challenged pigs by reducing labor and cost associated with treatment for disease without impacting performance or viral load of PRRS. The tendency for high levels of SBM to cause stool looseness can be countered with a high phytase level. High levels of soybean meal reduces medical treatment in nursery pigs affected by PRRS.

J. Animal Sci. The researchers cited recent studies that implied that increasing soybean meal content of diets can be beneficial in pathogen-challenged pigs, while other reports suggest similar benefits by increasing the use of synthetic amino acids, specifically tryptophan. The objective of their study was to determine if increased synthetic Trp replacing a portion of soybean meal would impact performance of late finishing pigs dual-challenged with PRRSV and MHP. Ninety-six mixed sex pigs weighing about 120 kg were selected and randomly assigned to a high SBM or synthetic Trp diet.

After 96 day on test diets, all pigs were inoculated intratracheally with MHP and intramuscularly with a field strain of PRRSV. Growth performance and feed efficiency were determined until pigs reached market weight after which, carcass were assessed. The SYN pigs had an increase in carcass fat depth compared to the SBM treatment.
