BACKGROUND: Delaying pigs from advancing through the production stages could have a negative impact on their health and performance. The objective of this study was to investigate the possible implications of delaying pigs from the normal production flow on pig health and performance in a farrow-to-finish commercial farm with a self-declared All-In/All-Out management. RESULTS: Three flows of pigs were defined, flow 1, flow 2 and flow 3. Flow 3 included higher proportions of pigs from first parity sows and of lighter birth weights. When the 3 flows were matched by parity and birth weight, pigs in flow 2 were 3.8 times more likely to be lame prior to slaughter compared with pigs in flow 1.

Pigs in flow 3 were more likely to be lame prior to slaughter, 4.5 times more likely to present pleurisy, 3.3 times more like to present pericarditis and 4.3 times more likely to have their heart condemned at slaughter compared with pigs in flow 1. Carcasses from pigs in flow 3 were 10 kg lighter compared with carcasses from pigs in flow 1. CONCLUSION: Delayed pigs were more affected by disease and were lighter at slaughter. Besides animal welfare issues, these findings could represent considerable economic loses for pig producers. In practice, delaying pigs from the normal production flow translates into higher feeding costs, increase number of days to slaughter and increased labour requirements reducing production efficiency for the pig operation.

In farrow-to-finish farms an ‘all-forward’ policy might be more easily adhered to.

What Doctors Want You to Know

That sounds like a lymph node, which could enlarge in response to an ear or sinus infection. If it eventually goes away completely, say in two to four weeks, then there’s no cause for concern, especially if you have symptoms of said infections. If it does not go away, you may want to have it looked at – sometimes we need to take these out for definitive diagnosis if they linger.

Genuine Micro Mini Teacup Pet Pigs!

VaccinationsProtecting your pigs from disease and critters is important, but can be very confusing. There is a lot of contradictory information found online and many vets are not used to caring for mini pigs. That is why we have put together this info to help you on your pig journey. There are times when your pig, no matter the size, can have a reaction to their vaccinations. To prevent a raised temperature, we give our pigs children’s liquid Ibuprofen.

You should worm your pig approximately every three months. There are a few products that you can use that are made specifically for pigs. They can also just be carriers on your pig and have any effect until your animal is stressed. The best way to administer Ivermectin is through a shot. Since most people are not comfortable administering Ivermectin this way, you can give it to your pig orally.

To administer Ivermectin orally, you must measure it based on weight. You will need to give Ivermectin twice, 10 days apart, to kill the mite life-cycle.

American Guinea Pig: The Vioxx/FDA Failure

The Vioxx story is one of the most widely publicized stories about the failure of the FDA to do its job. Back in May 1999, Vioxx was introduced into the market for the purpose of treating people with arthritis for their pain without the side-effect of other drugs which caused bleeding. The problem was that it had an increased ability to cause clotting which, in turn, caused heart attacks. The problem was further compounded by the fact that there was a study shortly after it went on the market that showed that, when comparing Vioxx with another drug that was used for the same type of treatment, Naproxen, that there was four times the incidence of heart attacks with Vioxx versus Naproxen. The problem was that the authors of the publication who were funded by Merck, the drug company, said that the difference was because Naproxen had a protective effect, the drug Vioxx was not actually causing those heart attacks.

You May Soon Be Eating These Gene-Edited Pigs

Mention Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome to a pig farmer, and they will surely shudder. The virus isn’t that damaging to the grown pigs, but it can completely devastate a herd’s reproductive success. It costs the pig industry in Europe and the United States about $2.5 billion a year. Now scientists have managed to produce pigs that can resist the virus. The virus infects pigs’ cells through a specific receptor on the cells’ surface called CD163.

So scientists at the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute and Genus PLC, an animal genetics company, clipped that small section out of the CD163 gene. When they exposed these gene-edited pigs to PRRS, the virus didn’t take. The pigs didn’t get sick and their blood tests showed no signs of infection. Genetic modifications involve inserting other species’ genes into an animal or a plant to give them certain characteristics they naturally don’t have. Such genetically modified animals are banned from the food chain in Europe.

It’s not yet clear what regulations may apply to such animals. With such a compelling business case for allowing these PRRS-resistant animals into the food chain, the policy and approval deliberations will follow very soon.

Hair and Beauty Evolution

Fatty acids are needed to grow hair and nails, as well as helping other processes in our body to function properly. The downside is that your dog might eat or swallow these parasites after licking, since a flea dip stays on the dog’s hair coat. The protein in flea saliva can cause an allergic reaction and severe dermatitis, resulting in permanent hair loss skin problems. Hair fall is also caused when the hair is dry and damaged and too weak to sustain itself. In such a case, you may use a hair pack for dry hair.

Simply apply honey on all of your hair, and ensure that each hair strand is well coated. Cover your hair with a shower cap and allow your hair to absorb the mixture for about fifteen minutes. Rinse your hair off with warm water thereafter, and find your hair smoother and easier to manage. Just getting your hair to a manageable state will reduce your hair fall drastically. We lose 20 and 100 hair each day without noticing it.

Proper hair care can give you fabulous, shining, thick, beautiful, gorgeous, and dandruff free hair. Home made beauty recipes like hair care, dandruff care and hair loss based on herbs and natural ingredients help improve the hair.

If the cow dies while on fire, steak will be dropped instead of beef. A cow can be milked by right clicking it with an empty bucket selected. Due to the fact that cows can be bred an unlimited number of times using renewable wheat, all of the cow’s products are renewable. In order to breed cows, one must give each of them a portion of wheat. Like adult cows, these calves can be milked, despite their immaturity.

Cows in the PC Gamer demo of Minecraft are branded with a ‘PCG’ logo on their side. In Survival Multiplayer, clicking anywhere on the cow with a bucket selected will fill it with milk, but only at the maximum distance at which players can use the bucket. As of Beta 1.3 01, the pink of the cow’s ear may also be milked. In 1.8, cows seem to be less common than other passive mobs. In 1.4, the cow’s sounds were changed slightly, such as new step sounds and idle sounds.

In Minecraft, all cows are female since female cows can be milked; however, all cows can still breed and have offspring. All the cows in Minecraft resemble Norwegian Red cattle.

Can Guinea Pigs eat Apples?

Having a lot of them in the house, it would be good to know whether I can give them to my guinea pig or not. There are all kinds of varieties of apples that they could possibly eat and so if they could eat them then that would be quite useful to know. Here were a few things I learnt about giving guinea pig’s apples. 5 considerations to make before giving a guinea pig apples. Give a couple of times a week if your guinea pig likes it. Apples are a treat more than anything, and shouldn’t be treated as part of a guinea pig’s staple diet.

Too much will also upset the guinea pig’s intestines. Apple went down very well with my guinea pig, but this is definitely going to be a treat food to be given every so often, nothing more than that. Anything that we find not good to eat the guinea pig won’t probably like. Its not a good idea to give un-ripened apples to your guinea pig, because they have particularly sour. My guinea pig had a nibble at one, and backed away from it immediately.

I wouldn’t risk it at all as my guinea pig may choke on it.

Best Friends Animal Society

As with other animals, potbellied pigs can’t tell us when they’re sick, so it’s best to try and be aware of signs of pain or illness. As you get to know your pigs, you’ll learn to recognize when they’re feeling good and when they are feeling under the weather. Pigs can have a variety of health issues, ranging from simple ear infections to a complicated disease like cancer. The most common health problems in potbellied pigs are respiratory troubles and constipation. Arthritis is one of the most common ailments in potbellied pigs.

In pigs, arthritis can be caused by past or present weight issues or lack of exercise, but it can also be the result of the pig’s breeding, age or previous diet. To ease arthritis, keeping your pigs healthy and active is essential, as is consulting with your veterinarian about possible treatments. Speaking of vet care, you’ll want to find a veterinarian who’s experienced with potbellied pigs. Before you adopt a pig, it’s a good idea to research vets in your area and select one whom you feel you can trust. There are routine vaccinations for potbellied pigs; your vet will know which ones your pigs require.

Before you actually have to take your pig to the vet, get your pig familiar with being in a dog crate and in a vehicle. Be sure to place a rubber-backed mat or rug on the bottom of the crate so that your pig will have good footing.

How to Tell If a Guinea Pig Is Pregnant

Since it is a very social animal and thrives in areas where other guinea pigs reside, the chances of it getting pregnant are also high. Most people don’t really know how to tell if their guinea pig is pregnant. The signs of whether she is pregnant may not become obvious at first; unless of course you know your guinea pigs as well as you know yourself. If your guinea pig starts gaining weight in an orderly fashion that is a definite indication that she is pregnant. When you suspect that she is pregnant start weighing her every week.

If her weight keeps increasing steadily and surely, chances are she is pregnant. If she is pregnant, your guinea pig will eat and drink more than usual. Like with humans, this is an obvious and clear indication that she may be pregnant. If you still haven’t figured out that your sow is pregnant and she gets to a point where she moves more slowly than usual, she is pregnant. If even after taking measures to see if the guinea pig is pregnant you are still unsatisfied, visit your local veterinarian.

A veterinarian will be able to take proper tests and determine whether your guinea pig is pregnant or not. After finding out if your guinea pig is pregnant, it is important to take certain measures to ensure that she has a safe and smooth pregnancy.

Indeed apart from some exceptions all pigs are to be raised in groups and must be provided with permanent access to drinking water and food of appropriate quality at regular intervals. They must also have permanent access to a sufficient quantity of enrichment materials that does not compromise their health and enables them to carry out proper investigation and manipulation activities and fulfil their behavioural needs. Please refer to the EFSA page for their scientific opinions on the welfare aspects of pig farming. Routine tail docking is forbidden, the Commission has developed several activities to prevent routine tail docking. Surgical castration, practiced for centuries to remove an unpleasant odour from pork known as ‘boar taint’ and prevent undesirable sexual and aggressive behaviour in pigs, has become a significant animal welfare concern in recent years.

Research has proven that this surgical procedure inflicts pain, even on very young pigs.

Signs of a guinea pig dying

Well i knew my guinea pig was’nt ok because is had sunken eyes and very thin -a common thing was that her teeth were too long for a long time and was’nt drinking or eating- i gave her norer stiks and things like that but she had’nt been to the vets before so she didnt get cheked up and by just not being normal. Ellie x When my guinea pig died last night, She was breathing really hard and was lying on her left side. She was always trying to snuggle up to the other guinea pig. Once I had held one last time, I put her back into her cage next to lucky. Anna When my Guinea pig was dieing she did not move at all except for a little twitching every once and a wile.

She would lay on her left side and when I held her she would not want to snuggle like she always does she just sat there. When I tried to feed her she would not eat or drink her eyes were wide open and she would not blink and she would pee a lot. When your pet is on the last chapter of their life, there are some tell-tale signs that may help you deal with the pain of loosing them. Some obvious changes with their eatting and drinking habbits will start to show, and they may start to get bald patches and be slugish when walking around their cage. Theirs not much you can do for them except let them know they were a great pet, and keep encouraging them to eat.

You know when your guinea pig is dieing when it is not eating or walking slowly and just laying down a lot.

Pigs in a Blanket Recipe

If you, or anyone in your family, has the internal fortitude to turn up a nose at a platter of darling little hot dogs snuggled into their flaky little dough pashminas, then you are more evolved than anyone in my family. If like most every other mortal on this earth, your heart beats a little faster when you get a glimpse of these happy little morsels, and you lose your ability to concentrate onoh, look, there’s a butterfly. Men, in particular, get a euphoric glazed look when pigs in a blanket make an appearance. Making pigs in a blanket is not rocket science, nor innovative cuisine, nor health food. If you want to gild the lily a bit, shove a few slivers of cheese into a slit made down the middle of each hot dog before rolling them up in the puff pastry.

Lightly flour the work surface and place the thawed puff pastry on the flour. Using a rolling pin, roll each piece of pastry until it is a little thinner, trying to maintain the squared off lines of the rectangle. Cut each piece of puff pastry into strips about 1 inch by 3 inches. Place a wee hot dog or sausage on the narrow end of 1 puff pastry strip. Place the pig in a blanket on the prepared baking sheet, seam-side down.

Repeat with the remaining hot dogs and puff pastry strips, arranging the pigs in blankets on the baking sheet at least 1 inch apart. Bake the pigs in blankets until they’re puffed and golden brown, about 20 minutes.

The Guinea Pig course is suitable for anyone working and volunteering with guinea pigs in an animal shelter or veterinary surgery. Module 1 examines the routine health checks required for Guinea Pigs. Learn about the nutritional requirements of Guinea Pigs and how to ensure an adequate diet that also incorporates aspects of environmental enrichment. As well as guinea pigs they include mara, capybara and several species of cavy, such as the yellow-toothed cavy. Veterinarian in ALLENTOWN, PA.

Guinea Pig Health and Wellness – Guinea Pigs are large rodents weighing about two pounds with a lifespan of five to seven years. Guinea pigs are easy to handle, docile creatures sturdy enough for even small children to handle. Guinea pigs are very conscientious about grooming themselves, but brushing them on a regular basis will help keep their coat clean and remove any loose hairs. Long-haired guinea pigs should be brushed daily in order to prevent tangles and knots from forming. Housing – Guinea pigs are social animals preferring to live in small groups.

The ASPCA recommends offering small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables to your guinea pigs every day. Greens are especially important for guinea pigs as they supply them with Vitamin C. Guinea pigs must have a dietary source of Vitamin C or they will become sick and die of Vitamin C deficiency. Guinea pigs obtain most of their water through leafy greens so you may notice that your guinea pig does not drink very much.

3473 Old Norcross Rd, Duluth, GA

There will be lots of good smelling smoke so don’t wear your Gucci to this place unless you like to have your clothes become one with beef short rib and other smells of delicious seared meat. Recently, the establishment seems to be overshadowed by the many newer bbq joints popping up all over the place. In comparison to the ‘better’ places Honey Pig falls a bit short. WOW ! I’m so glad Honey Pig was the place that ended such a horrible streak of not have Korean BBQ in my life!

I didn’t know what to expect. My friend recommended this place so we came here for lunch to try it out. My friends from Augusta also said it was really good and this place gives you a lot of meat. There was more chicken, more beef & more of everything we wanted! He is a superb server with a wicked sense of humour to-boot!

If you’re in need of KB then this is THE place to go when in Duluth. Must try! This place is one of the top Korean BBQ in duluth. I’ve been to a few different kbbq places for lunch specials, but none of them beats Honey Pig. Great service as well, Christine was amazing!

One of the greatest Korean bbq places I’ve been to! Honey Pig is my go to place for KBBQ. It was the first one I ever went to and has been the gold standard for me ever since. The beef brisket was placed into the more expensive option, which kind of I feel like leaves you no choice but to pay the extra $5. Would have been five stars if not for that!

I always enjoy eating here and highly recommend.

Guardian Pigs are aggressive Pigs that spawn from Pig Torches. If a Guardian Pig is dead, it will respawn at its Pig Torch after 3 days. In world 4 of Adventure Mode, you can find 4 Pig Torches surrounding the Pig King instead of Obelisks. Sometimes the Guardian pigs will be protecting a Maxwell Statue, instead. Below is the number of hits it takes with each weapon to kill Pigs and their offspring when playing with characters with a default damage modifier.

Guardian Pigs take 2 blasts from the Ice Staff to be frozen and 3 Sleep Darts to be put to sleep. Guardian Pigs seem to have a certain degree of discipline, as they do not eat any food on the ground and stay near the Pig Torch to keep it lit. Guardian Pigs’ behavior changes according to the location of their Pig Torch. If the torch is beside a Pig King, the guardians will reluctantly allow the player to stay and trade with their king. If the torch guards a fortress or is far from the king, the Guardian Pigs will pursue the player until they’ve run a certain distance from their torch.

Clicking on a Pig with a headgear item selected will equip it on the Pig. Usually, the only way to get hats back from Pigs without killing them is to replace it with another hat, as fighting the Pig will break it before the Pig dies. The Pigs can also wear the Miner Hat; while wearing it, they will provide light and not panic during dusk or in a Cave, while also preventing nearby Pigs from panicking.

Pig to human transplants

The five cloned piglets – Noel, Angel, Star, Joy and Mary – have been genetically modified so humans will not reject their internal organs. This opens up the possibility of pig to human transplants, which may save the lives of many seriously ill people. A 75kg pig has the same-sized heart as a 75kg human, with the same pumping capacity. In theory it should be possible to farm pigs for their organs, much as we now farm them for bacon. Many human to human transplants are only possible with powerful drugs that suppress the immune system and prevent it from treating the new organ or tissue as a huge infection and rejecting it.

Doctors try to match donors to recipients to keep rejection to a minimum, but the problems are greater with pigs. If an unmodified pig heart were given to a human, the reaction would be so violent that the heart would turn black in 15 minutes and be virtually destroyed in 30. It will take until at least 2005 to figure out how to deal with adverse immune reactions and conduct trials with primates before human clinical trials can begin. There will also be a need to ensure that pig diseases do not cross to humans, and to establish whether a heart that will serve a pig for its 30-year life span will last longer in humans. Efforts are being made to increase the donation of human organs – the supply is still not high enough, though some argue that pig to human transplants would be unnecessary if the taking of healthy organs from the dead was mandatory.

There may be a degree of revulsion at killing an animal to save a human, but some could feel happier carrying the organ of a dead pig than a dead human. Pigs are already bred and killed for food, but some vegetarians and vegans might feel uneasy about making such use of an animal.

The New Zealand Kunekune Association – Dedicated to the preservation of Kunekune pigs in New Zealand and beyond

The name Kunekune means ‘fat and round’ in Maori, a rather apt description for this unusual looking pig. The Kunekune is smaller that other breeds of pigs in New Zealand, although a very overweight Kunekune can still be a somewhat large pig. The characteristic Kunekune shape is a short-legged, short-snouted pig with a high fat depth giving very rounded body contours. A Kunekune pig in ‘show’ condition looks very different in body shape to the equivalent commercial pig, and the shortened nose and head give the Kunekune an almost comical appearance. Not all Kunekunes have tassels, as although it is a dominant gene the population contains a proportion of pigs without tassels.

Occasionally piglets may be born with only one tassel, or sometimes they are not well attached and can be lost through injury. Breeders usually prefer to use only tasselled pigs for breeding, as breeding non-tasselled pigs increases the percentage of offspring without tassels. When a tasselled Kunekune is crossed with another breed, the offspring will be tasselled – so not all pigs with tassels are pure Kunekune. The coat colour and texture of the Kunekune can vary considerably. The coat texture can range from short silky hair giving a sleek appearance, to long coarse curls that give a more unkempt look.

The typical Kunekune nature is of a sociable placid pig that likes close human contact. Although boars can be aggressive to each other or if a sow is in season, Kunekunes are usually very trustworthy, easy to handle, and safe to have children around.

Decoding Nipah Virus

The virus is part of the family Paramyxoviridae and was first identified in 1999. Off late, around the beginning of 2018, there have been cases of the Nipah virus happening several times in India as well. Nipah virus is transferred to humans after direct contact with infected bats, pigs, and other NiV-affected individuals. Person-to-person transmission of the virus occurred in India and Bangladesh and had often been occurring ever since. It occurs commonly in the family as well as caregivers of those affected by the virus.

Nipah virus infection is directly associated with the encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain. A general health checkup can help in identifying the presence of the virus in a person’s system. A general health checkup might not bring up the signs, but other tests that can determine whether the Nipah virus is in the body include real-time polymerase chain reactions from both nasal and throat swabs, urine, cerebrospinal fluid and blood tests undertaken in the early stages of the disease. If the case is fatal, immunohistochemistry done on tissues collected during the autopsy period is another way to confirm the presence of the virus. A preventive health care checkup could help identify the virus in the early stages of its presence.

The virus can be prevented by ensuring there is no exposure to sick pigs as well as bats in some of the endemic areas. There is still a lot of research that needs to be done to understand bat ecology as well as the Nipah virus.

McDonalds Is The Only Fast Food I Recommend….For Pigs ! –

McDonalds is not really good enough to feed to pigs because at the end of the day, humans will eat the pigs so it is not a safe thing to do. I would not even feed it to animals that are not in the human food chain because McDonalds is just not healthy. McDonalds is a worldwide exporter of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Hamburger chef Jamie Oliver has won his long-fought battle against one of the largest fast food chains in the world – McDonalds. After Oliver showed how McDonalds hamburgers are made, the franchise finally announced that it will change its recipe, and yet there was barely a peep about this in the mainstream, corporate media.

McDonalds is without any morals, money is ruler and king, the be all and the end all. In reply to all of the bad press this process has received from Oliver, the company Arcos Dorados, the franchise manager for McDonalds in Latin America, said such a procedure is not practiced in their region. McDonalds is lucky that someone does not force their top management to eat their own muck day in and day out for every meal. On the official website of McDonalds, the company claims that their meat is cheap because, while serving many people every day, they are able to buy from their suppliers at a lower price, and offer the best quality products. On the site, McDonalds has admitted that they have abandoned the beef filler from its burger patties.

McDonald’s use 19 ingredients in their french fries alone but that is after they have been grown with very strong pesticides, including probable carcinogens like chlorothalonil and pendimethalin, chlorpyrifos, PCNB and 2,4‐D. Pesticide drift is a major problem, negatively impacting public health and the environment killing livestock of the neighboring farmers. If you still prefer to eat at McDonald’s good luck to you.

Cattle feeding

Different cattle feeding production systems have separate advantages and disadvantages. Some corn-fed cattle are fattened in concentrated animal feeding operations known as feed lots. Because much of the land is better suited for cattle grazing than crop growing, it raises 40 percent of the cattle in Canada – about five million head. The other three western provinces are also well endowed with grazing land, so nearly 90 percent of Canadian beef cattle are raised in Alberta and the other western provinces. According to the United States Department of Agriculture there are 25-33 million head of feed cattle moving through custom and commercial cattle feedyards annually.

The feed cattle enterprise is an industry where millions of dollars move through these custom and private cattle feeding facilities every year. The business of feeding cattle is based on a commodity market mechanism. Cattle production worldwide is differentiated by animal genetics and feeding methods, resulting in differing quality types. Grain-fed cattle have more internal fat which results in a more tender meat than forage-fed cattle of a similar age. Another effect of feeding flax in cattle ration is an observed increase in the daily dry matter intake.

Although the direct beneficial effects of feeding omega-3 fatty acids remain uncertain, the preventative effect from feeding omega-3s to stressed cattle have shown great promise. In 1997, regulations prohibited the feeding of mammalian byproducts to ruminants such as cattle and goats. Campylobacter, a bacterium that can cause another foodborne illness resulting in nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle pain was found by Australian researchers to be carried by 58% of cattle raised in feed lots versus only 2% of pasture raised and finished cattle.

Eye Problems in Guinea Pigs

Healthy guinea pigs secrete a white fluid from near the eye which they then groom over their faces with their forepaws several times a day. A healthy guinea pig has large, open eyes which are very bright and moist. Despite their bright appearance guinea pigs have amongst the worst sight in caged pets and rely on movement and smell to make their way around. This is partly the reason for their very vocal personalities; they are relying on the noise to tell other guinea pigs where they are, what they are doing and how they are feeling; it is unlikely they would ever find each other in the wild otherwise! Guinea pigs can go blind for various reasons to do with eye health, but this is not the disaster it would be for many other pets; they can hardly see their paws in front of their faces at the best of times!

Because guinea pigs like to forage about and snuffle in their bedding, they sometimes get injuries to the eye. If this happens the eye will develop an opaque covering, which is to protect the eye while it heals. Eye ointments available over the counter are useful to have handy if your guinea pig suffers from pea eye or has a foreign body which has been flushed out naturally by tears. An eye problem in a guinea pig is not in itself serious, but may lead to depression and lack of appetite. Guinea pigs can quickly become quite ill with gut problems if they are not eating the correct diet and so it is important to keep them free of other problems so as to prevent this.

There is no real way of preventing eye problems in guinea pigs as most are caused by congenital problems, such as entropion (in-turned eyelashes), accident or old age. It is important to check with the vet if the pig has trouble with its eyes and it is likely that it will become possible, with a little training, to cope with minor problems such as foreign bodies or inflamed pea eye at home without another visit. With guinea pigs it is always a matter of weighing up the pros and cons as to whether a visit to the vet will do more harm than good.

Scientists create glow-in-the-dark PIGS after injecting them with jellyfish DNA

Scientists create the world’s first glow-in-the-dark PIGS after injecting them with jellyfish DNA Scientists at South China Agricultural University in Guangdong Province say that the 10 piglets could help them develop cheaper drugs for humans. Chinese scientists have created the world’s first glow-in-the-dark pigs that emit a fluorescent green light. The piglets acquired their bizarre ability to glow under ‘black’ or UVA light after their embryos were injected with DNA from a jellyfish. GREEN RABBITS AND OTHER GLOW-IN-THE-DARK ANIMALS. Researchers in Hawaii and Turkey successfully created a litter of eight rabbits, including two kits that glow green when the lights are out, in August of this year.

The experiment, which used fluorescent protein from jellyfish, furthers the research started in the 1980s when glow in the dark mice were created. While most glow green in the dark, in 2007 South Korean scientists managed to develop cats that glowed red under ultraviolet light. The same method was used to create the world’s first glow-in-the-dark rabbits in Turkey earlier this year, where they are currently working to create a glowing sheep. Dr Zhenfang Wu and Dr Zicong Li of the South China Agricultural University have detailed the research that produced the pigs in a study that will be published the journal Biology of Reproduction. In a video accompanying the research, the pigs grunt when the lights are turned off and after a short while begin to squeal, perhaps hinting that they are a little scared of the dark.

Dr Moisyadi said the animals are not affected by the fluorescent protein and will have the same life span as other pigs. The ultimate goal of the research is to introduce beneficial genes into larger animals to create less costly and more efficient medicines. The Institute for Biogenesis Research at the John A. Burns School of Medicine focuses on reproductive research.

Prevalence and characteristics of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in finishing pigs: Implications on public health

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli are important food-borne pathogens, which can cause serious illnesses, including hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. To study the epidemiology of STEC in finishing pigs and examine the potential risks they pose for human STEC infections, we conducted a longitudinal cohort study in three finishing sites. Six cohorts of pigs were randomly selected, and fecal samples were collected every two weeks through their finishing period. Eighty-two pigs shed STEC at least once, and the proportion of STEC-positive pigs varied across sites and cohorts. Clinically important serotypes, O157:H7 and O26:H11, were recovered from two pigs at sites C and A, respectively.

The most common serotype isolated was O59:H21, which was particularly prevalent in site B as it was recovered from all STEC positive pigs. Each cohort showed different patterns of STEC shedding, which were associated with the prevalent serotype. The median shedding duration of STEC in pigs was 28 days, consistent with our prior study. Among pigs shedding O59:H21 at least once, pigs in cohort B2 had a significantly longer shedding duration of 42 days compared to other cohorts. Stx2e was the most commonly observed stx variant in finishing pigs, in accordance with the previous studies.

Stx2e has been reported to be significantly associated with edema disease in pigs the pathogenicity in humans warrants further investigations. Our findings affirm that pigs are an important reservoir for human STEC infections, and that the circulating serotypes in a cohort and site management factors may significantly affect the prevalence of STEC. Molecular characterization of STEC isolates and epidemiological studies to identify risk factors for shedding in pigs are strongly warranted to further address the significance to public health and to develop mitigation strategies.
