2 Month Update: Sherwood Pet Health Pellets/Products

E-CIGARETTES May 2018 JUUL & THE GUINEA PIG GENERATION Public Health Concerns about Use by Young People JUUL. The recent rapid rise in popularity of this flavored, potent, nicotinebased e-cigarette product, particularly among youth and young adults, as well as the apparent ease of access, use, and ability to open and custom‑fill its supposedly closed-system cartridges, has alarmed the public health community. 2 JUUL has surpassed all of its competitors in the e-cigarette market, including products marketed by U.S. tobacco industry giants – RJ Reynolds’ Vuse, Altria’s Mark Ten, and Imperial’s Blu and its new variant, myblu. 5 According to JUUL Labs, inhaling aerosol from the proprietary heated e-liquids in JUUL devices mimics the way that nicotine is absorbed in the bloodstream from combusted cigarettes, such that use of a JUUL device, as intended, can achieve a similar rate of absorption in the bloodstream and deliver nicotine to the brain similarly to conventional cigarettes. Seven in 10 teens are exposed to e-cigarette ads.9 E-cigarette advertisements, including those from JUUL, have a strong presence not only on the internet but also on television and radio, in film and print advertisements, and at retail points of sale. 23 Public health leaders are very concerned about youth’s attraction to JUUL and similar e-cigarette and e-liquid products based on industry marketing of flavors. Emerging survey research suggests, for example, that young people may be drawn to the fruit and candy-like flavors offered by JUUL without being aware that JUUL is a potent nicotine-based product to which they can become easily addicted.

Overall, one-quarter of respondents reported recognition of JUUL devices, 10 percent reported both recognition and use, and 8 percent reported using a JUUL device within the past 30 days. Of particular note, only 25 percent of all who recognized the product and 37 percent of those who had used a JUUL device during the past 30 days knew that JUUL devices always contain nicotine. 36 An additional concern is that in conducting an internet search, one can easily find multiple sites other than JUUL Labs where JUUL or copy-cat www. Among the actions they requested was the removal of any JUUL flavors introduced after August 8, 2016 without first receiving the required FDA authorization, and the suspension of internet sales of JUUL until adequate rules are established to prevent sales to underage persons. The agency sent a letter to JUUL Labs, asking it to submit documents relating to its marketing practices and research on marketing, effects of product design, public health impact, and adverse experience and complaints regarding JUUL products. The groups, which included the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association, and American Lung Association, also asked the FDA to remove similar new products that are alleged to perform like JUUL and have been introduced without first receiving FDA approval; to reverse its unlawful 2017 decision allowing e-cigarettes on the market as of August 8, 2016, to stay on the market until at least 2022 without filing marketing applications and receiving marketing authorization from the FDA; and to apply federal rules, prohibiting cigarette brand names from being used on other products, to JUUL and other e-cigarette brand names, e.g., decorative wraps or skins, t-shirts, sweatshirts.

Senior Pig Moment: How to Care for the Unique Needs of Your Old Guinea Pig

Like humans, old age in guinea pigs comes with its own set of unique challenges and realities. From mellower personalities to changing nutritional needs, there can be some important differences between the day-to-day needs of older guinea pigs and young guinea pigs. Guinea pigs will start to develop these old-age related challenges in the later years of its life, and older guinea pigs don’t recover from illness as quickly as young guinea pigs. Don’t Forget Vitamin C. Guinea pigs, like humans, are not able to create vitamin C.

Guinea pigs need a daily vitamin C supplement, not in the form of a fruit or veggie snack. The best indicator of good guinea pig health is how much your cavy eats and drinks. In addition to the mobility issues guinea pigs can experience as they get older, it can be difficult for old guinea pigs to get around on loose, paper bedding. If you notice your older guinea pig isn’t moving around much, consider switching to fleece cage bedding, and be sure to limit the number of toys and playthings in your guinea pig’s cage so it can easily move around. At least once a day, sit with your senior guinea pig and gently feel around its body for growths.

Watching your guinea pig’s stool production and quality is absolutely vital to ensure your guinea pig is staying healthy. Be sure to always have a supply of Critical Care, probiotic, and plastic syringes on hand in case you need to hand-feed your guinea pig or your guinea pig experiences a gut upset. Learning how your guinea pig behaves normally will give you a good baseline on which to judge future changes. Plus, when your beloved old cavy eventually crosses the rainbow bridge, you’ll know that you did everything you could to give your guinea pig a happy and healthy life.

Angus Meets Autumn For The 1st Time: Guinea Pig Intro

Short Term Health Plans Republicans were able to fight off Democratic efforts to roll back a Trump regulation that would expand the number of health insurance plans that don’t have to meet Obamacare’s benefit rules, Alex Ruoff reports. Trump’s Health Team President Trump took a lap in the winner’s circle this week when he signed two bills into law that end pharmacy gag clauses. Pharmacists couldn’t tell a customer if their drugs would be cheaper if they paid without insurance unless the customer explicitly asked. Trump said he expects an immediate impact and that drug costs at the pharmacy counter will go down. Experimental Bundles Over 1,500 hospitals and physician practices are going to be guinea pigs for a new Medicare payment model, James Swann writes.

The Little Guy CVS Health Corp.’s $68 billion merger with Aetna Inc. spells trouble for any other pharmacy benefit service looking to set up shop, Eleanor Tyler reports. Small insurers will also be strained because of the deal because CVS will likely pass on its savings to the insurer and charge full freight for its pharmacy benefit manager work to other carriers. Six Former Pharmacy Employees You might remember when 753 people got sick and 64 died from a contaminated drug that was created in a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy in 2012. Six people involved in that bad batch of medicine will head to court soon, and prosecutors are trying to prove they knowingly marketed non-sterile drugs, Adrianne Appel reports.

Compounded drugs are personalized formulas mixed in-house and sold in very small batches. They’re in a regulatory gray area, which creates concern among some FDA officials that they’re more likely to be tainted than other drugs. The pharmacy, New England Compounding Center, folded long ago, and some people involved in the outbreak have already gone to jail.

Guinea pig models for translation of the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis into the clinic.

Guinea pig models for translation of the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis into the clinic. Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA. Over 30 years ago Professor David Barker first proposed the theory that events in early life could explain an individual’s risk of non-communicable disease in later life: the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis. During the 1990s the validity of the DOHaD hypothesis was extensively tested in a number of human populations and the mechanisms underpinning it characterised in a range of experimental animal models. Over the past decade, researchers have sought to use this mechanistic understanding of DOHaD to develop therapeutic interventions during pregnancy and early life to improve adult health.

A variety of animal models have been used to develop and evaluate interventions, each with strengths and limitations. It is becoming apparent that effective translational research requires that the animal paradigm selected mirrors the tempo of human fetal growth and development as closely as possible so that the effect of a perinatal insult and/or therapeutic intervention can be fully assessed. The guinea pig is one such animal model that over the past two decades has demonstrated itself to be a very useful platform for these important reproductive studies. This review highlights similarities in the in utero development between humans and guinea pigs, the strengths and limitations of the guinea pig as an experimental model of DOHaD and the guinea pig’s potential to enhance clinical therapeutic innovation to improve human health.

Guinea Pigs Love a Routine

Guinea pigs soon get used to a routine, and will reward you with welcoming squeaks as soon as they hear you open your back door. It is important to check on your guinea pigs at least twice a day, in the morning and evening. Guinea pigs love human company and the more time you can spend with them the happier they are. FeedingGuinea pigs are never happier then when they are eating, and feed time will be rewarded with the loudest squeaks of all. In the morning they should be given a bowl of dry mix, and a variety of fresh food.

During the day if they are in their Eglu they will graze grass, and then in the evening they can be given some fresh hay for overnight. Fresh waterWater is extremely important, and the bottle should be refilled daily. If the weather is cold, be aware that their water could freeze, and may need to be thawed and refilled more frequently. Keep their home clean and tidyHousekeeping is very important, and their bedding should be changed regularly. Unlike rabbits, guinea pigs cannot be trained to use a litter tray, they will toilet anywhere, but the eglu is quick and easy to clean.

The ideal home for your guinea pig

Guinea pigs are very active animals and you’ll need to provide them with lots of toys and objects to keep them active. They’ll need a lot of space to be happy and healthy. A large hutch and a big, grassy exercise area provide them with the ideal living area. They can live indoors or outdoors, so long as they have enough space and are kept comfortable in summer heat or bad winter weather. You can even keep your guinea pigs in a heated outhouse in a cavvycage.

If your guinea pigs live outdoors, don’t let them exercise in bad weather. Consider keeping them in a warm shed or outbuilding where they can exercise indoors during winter. The RSPCA recommends an absolute minimum size of 4ft by 2ft but the bigger the better. Make sure it’s weatherproof and raised off the ground. Guinea pigs don’t sleep much but take naps throughout the day and night.

They’ll need to be able to choose when to go to bed and when to be active. Plenty of toys and activities to keep them entertained.

Morning Routine For 9 Guinea Pigs

Within the last few months, nicotine vaping products became legal in Canada. As e-cigarettes and the promotion of vaping products become more prevalent, health professionals are warning they are not as safe as many believe. Within the last few months, nicotine vaping products became legal in Canada and last week, the provincial government released proposed changes to legislation on vaping products in convenience stores, which would allow companies to display and advertise their products – something that’s banned in seven other provinces. E-cigarette and other vaping devices heat liquid into an inhalable vapor that often contains nicotine. Still, many experts believe vaping is less harmful than cigarettes, but there are some significant health concerns they believe consumers should be aware of.

Abou-Jaoude said his e-juices are generally made of vegetable glycerin, artificial flavours, nicotine and propylene glycol, a common food additive and flavouring. Nicotine in many e-cigarettes creates many of the same oral health problems as regular cigarettes, according to Glogauer. The amount of nicotine in a particular e-juice can vary, but Glogauer said there are also harmful chemicals in e-juice smoke not present in cigarette smoke. Health Canada said it is reviewing data and testing vaping liquids. Still, many experts believe those who cannot quit smoking should use vaping as an alternative.

Health Canada agrees vaping is a less harmful source of nicotine than smoking. Abou-Jaoude says he’s using vaping as a way to curb his smoking habit and believes consumers should educate themselves about vaping products and use them when needed.

Guinea pigs make excellent pets for adults and children. There are three breeds of guinea pigs that are normally kept as pets. Younger guinea pigs are easy to train and take a little less time to acclimatize, while older ones may take a little longer to get used to a new surrounding, but may already be socialized. Guinea pigs do not require yearly vaccinations, but they should have annual check-ups for illnesses or diseases. These little critters can also be trained to use a litter box inside the cage by placing it in the guinea pig’s selected washroom area.

Cavies do not require a huge cage, but the larger the cage, the less cleaning, and more exercise and entertainment for the guinea pig. Standard size cages are available from pet stores, but most of these are suitable for only one guinea pig. Corn cob bedding can be used, but is not ideal, as some guinea pigs will eat the bedding, and the corn cob pellets mold very quickly. Make sure the cage is placed in a bright, draft free room, at room temperature, 18-23 degrees C. Also, the cage should not be placed in direct sunlight, or too close to a radiator, where the guinea pig may develop heat exhaustion.

Pelleted food is available and the cavy should be given 1/8 cup per day for a 2lb. guinea pig. Rabbit pellets should not be used, because they do not contain vitamin C and they may contain excessive amounts of vitamin D, which is toxic to guinea pigs. During the bath, support the guinea pig gently with one hand to prevent the cavy from jumping out of the bowl or slipping and injuring itself.

What are the common health problems in pet guinea pigs?

Many of the common health problems seen in pet guinea pigs are often preventable by good husbandry and good feeding practices. Vitamin C deficiencyLike humans, guinea pigs cannot synthesise vitamin C from other food substances so they require a direct dietary source of vitamin C. This is usually supplied sufficiently by feeding fresh leafy green vegetables. Affected guinea pigs may be anorexic, lethargic, weak; move with difficulty and appear painful when moving. Vitamin C deficiency causes the guinea pig severe pain and discomfort and is a preventable condition.

Ulcerative pododermatitisIn the wild, guinea pigs generally live on grassed areas or other types of natural material which provide some measure of cushioning for their feet. Swollen and ulcerated footpads are a common problem when guinea pigs are kept on hard surfaces and/or uncovered wire mesh floors. Domesticated guinea pigs should be kept on soft floor material and soft bedding material to help prevent ulcerative pododermatitis. Dental problemsGuinea pigs fed an inappropriate diet are highly susceptible to dental problems. Dental disease causes severe pain and discomfort to the guinea pig and is best prevented by feeding an appropriate diet.

Guinea pigs have evolved over thousands of years to eat a high fibre diet. In their natural environment wild guinea pigs eat predominantly grass throughout the day. If you suspect your guinea pig is suffering from any of the above mentioned diseases and/or you notice any other abnormalities or problems please consult your vet immediately.

Billy Connolly health: Comedian volunteers to be a “guinea pig” for Parkinsons disease

The 75-year-old comedian was hit with a double blow after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and prostate cancer in the same week five years ago. The actor also revealed the disease now dominates his life. The comic added Parkinson’s disease is the first thing he thinks about everyday. Sir Billy had successful surgery to remove his prostate following the cancer diagnosis. The actor and comedian is gearing up to star in two new television documentaries and also plans to have his book released later this year.

He will appear in a new BBC series called Coming Home in which he returns to his roots in Scotland and does a tour around the country. The theme of the show centres around the comedian’s memories, with his travels being sparked by different parts of his life such as the Hank Williams album and a bottle of air recreating the smell of the old Glasgow Docks. Billy will also appear in a new ITV documentary called Billy Connolly’s Ultimate World Tour which sees him reflect on 25 years of travelling the world. The knighted star will take camera crews around his home in Florida after he was advised by doctors to move to a warmer climate. Earlier this year, Sir Billy and his wife hit back at claims by Sir Michael Parkinson that he was unable to recognise the presenter due to his health battle.

Sir Billy was a regular guest on Sir Michael’s self-titled show which ran from 1971 to 2007..

L.A. Guinea Pig Rescue Pit Crew

Inside Lab100, Mount Sinai’s health clinic of the future

10 minute Read. I’m walking through Mount Sinai Health System’s library on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, surrounded by medical students studying and furiously clacking on their keyboards. The corner of a medical school library is a rather unlikely place to put the clinic of the future, but for now, it’s the staging area for Lab100-an experimental clinic that provides patients with one of the most complete health assessments currently available, from cognition and balance to body composition and dexterity. Lab100’s creators have big ambitions: to redesign health care by focusing on healthy people. This is where Lab100 is focusing-connecting everyday behaviors with conventional medicine, shifting health care’s emphasis on treating disease toward preventing disease in the first place.

The first step of the assessment was to pose for a photo that would be attached to the rest of the health data the team would collect on me that morning. The entire experience was unlike any interaction with a doctor I’d ever had-and I’d never seen the current state of my health laid out in such a visual, easy-to-understand manner. Bringing a small scale prototype like Lab100 to a larger audience is a daunting task, especially within the existing health care system. To find out, Dudley is working to prepare a pilot study at Mount Sinai, which, like other companies that insure their employees, has a great incentive to reduce its overall health insurance costs. The hospital system already encourages employees to complete a standard health and wellness test in exchange for reduced insurance premiums.

If Dudley gets his way, a sample of 1,000 people at Mount Sinai will do this standard test, and another 1,000 will do Lab100. Because doctors are trained to perform a test only if they have a suspicion that there’s something wrong, most electronic health records are almost completely empty-which makes it hard for technologists to train machine learning algorithms and make health care more predictive. It’s a service model that’s virtually nonexistent elsewhere in the health care system-one that’s based on UX, data, visualizations, storytelling, and most crucially, user-centered design and consent.

Guinea Pig Care

Native to grasslands, forests, swamps, and mountains of South America. Average litter size: 3 to 4 offspring; born fully furred with eyes open. Unable to naturally produce vitamin C in their bodies and must receive it through diet or supplements. Easily stressed: when frightened, will run around at high speed. Large quantity of grass hay, such as timothy, brome, and Bermuda grass.

Fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C. Pelleted guinea pig diet containing vitamin C, approximately 1/8 cup per day Alfalfa-based pellets for reproducing sows and juveniles up to 6 months of age. No diet mixes containing dried fruit, vegetables, grain, or seeds. Well-ventilated cage made of plastic, metal, or wire, with a solid cage floor to prevent injuries to the legs and feet Place the cage in a quiet location, away from direct sunlight, and maintain a temperature of 65°F to 75°F. To prevent heat stress, avoid high humidity and temperatures above 80°F.

Thick layer of fiber bedding such as aspen shavings or recycled newspaper litter. Avoid cedar or pine shavings, which can irritate the respiratory tract. Complete physical examination every 6 to 12 months Consult a veterinarian with experience treating exotic companion mammals if you have any questions or concerns about your guinea pig’s health. Regular toenail trimming, if necessary, and combing/brushing of longhaired breeds. Hair loss or itching due to mites, lice, fungal infections, or hormonal problems.

Vet Tips Caring for your Guinea Pig

Despite their common name, these animals are not pigs, nor do they come from Guinea. Guinea pigs are large rodents, weighing between 700 and 1200g, and measuring between 20 and 25 cm in length. According to the 2006 Guinness Book of Records the longest living guinea pig survived 14 years, 10.5 months. The guinea pig is able to breed all year-round, with birth peaks usually coming in the spring; as many as five litters can be produced per year. Do NOT fast your Guinea Pig before you bring her to the hospital.

Your Guinea Pig will get an intramuscular sedation that will make her fall asleep in 5 to 10 minutes. The sutures are hidden underneath the skin so your Guinea Pig won’t be able to pull them out. Do NOT fast your Guinea Pig before you bring him to the hospital. Your Guinea Pig will get an intramuscular sedation that will make him fall asleep in 5 to 10 minutes. Most grass-eating mammals are quite large and have a long digestive tract; while guinea pigs have much longer colons than most rodents, they must also supplement their diet by coprophagy, the eating of their own faces.

The cecotropes are eaten directly from the anus, unless the guinea pig is pregnant or obese. The Kitten or Puppy advantage is the correct size for a fully grown Guinea Pig and is safe to use.
