Drug-Test Human Guinea Pigs: Men’s Health.com

Others who are healthy just participate in the occasional study for some extra cash. In a Johns Hopkins survey of research volunteers published last spring in Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 10 percent of the sampled group admitted to participating in more than one study at a time – most likely without the knowledge of the researchers. Nancy Kass, Sc.D., the lead author of the Johns Hopkins study, agrees. As a result, there’s little chance of catching volunteers who skirt the rules, and that includes people who keep quiet about past or current physical conditions that have the potential to skew study results. While confidentiality rules give guinea pigs the cover they need to straddle multiple studies, those guinea pigs also benefit from a testing system that increasingly overlooks-and sometimes even encourages – abuse.

Struggling immigrants, the chronically unemployed, cash-strapped college students – anyone who’s financially needy is fodder for a CRO-run study and more likely to be a professional guinea pig. Within a year, he’d moved to Austin – lab rats consider it the mecca for clinical trials in the United States – and has been supporting himself with research studies ever since. Doubling up on studies or skirting the guidelines is tough for them, because the institutions where they’re tested keep good records and share detailed information about study participants. The government is not much better at monitoring its own studies. Still, in theory, any problems missed by the OHRP or the FDA would be caught by an institutional review board, or IRB.

Before any clinical trial can proceed, an IRB evaluates the study plan to make sure the testing is ethical and that participants’ rights are protected. Formation of these oversight committees was mandated in 1974 after details came to light about the Tuskegee Institute study that left black men untreated for syphilis for four decades. Today many IRBs are run for profit, creating an incentive to rule favorably on studies so that CROs won’t take their business elsewhere.

Adult Guinea Pig Food

Five days ago I started him on your Recovery food and pellets, I have hope he will get better. I recently switched my two female guinea pigs over to sherwood pellets. After learning about Sherwood Pellets from another Pig owner. My girls eat less of the pellets than they did of the previous brand, they do like the pellets, and the switch over has been pretty easy. Simple wholesome ingredients fortified with the essential Vitamin C that guinea pigs need in their diet, the pellets are dark green and smells wonderfully FRESH!

Just looking at the pellets alone is a sell – most pellets look tan or brown and are actually pretty big. I decided to switch the brand of emergency food and pellets to Sherwood and start using Sherwood cranberry tabs to hopefully avoid another stone because I knew he would not survive another operation. It’s been a couple weeks now that I’ve started mixing the Sherwood pellets with my guinea pig’s usual pellets and my guinea pig still won’t eat the Sherwood pellets…she has tried it but will still always go for her usual pellets. The Sherwood pellets stay in her food bowl and lose their shape…looks like it expands a bit and becomes crummy looking. Since we bought the Sherwood pellets, our Guinea Pigs won’t touch any other pellets.

With such great results, I could not wait to get my hands on a bag of Sherwood Forest Adult Guinea Pig Food. While most hesitate to feed a pellet with Alfalfa to a sludge-prone pig, I already knew that it wasn’t the calcium or Alfalfa causing her problems; It was all the junk, unbalanced formulas, and artificial vitamins.

Farmers can raise guinea pigs for health, wealth

Today, guinea pig farming business is gaining popularity throughout the world. Farmers should try raising guinea pigs for health and wealth as the demand is becoming huge both at the local and the export market. Guinea pig, small livestock with big potential, can be raised to improve the nutrition and livelihoods of farmers by providing food and additional income. Guinea pig farming business is a more profitable source of food and income than many traditional stock animals as they require much less room than traditional livestock and they reproduce extremely quickly. Guinea pig meat is white, lean, tasty and healthy for consumption, in addition to being wholesome and delicious.

In the farming families, children benefit most from the increased availability of fresh and nutritious meat from home-produced guinea pigs. Daily Sun learnt that guinea pig is a specie of rodents. They are not pigs nor do they come from Guinea or Guinea-Bissau. Guinea pigs are cavy type rodents, they are warm blooded mammals. Like most cavies, guinea pig has short legs, a short neck, a big head and no tail.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Jovana Integrated Farms, Prince Arinze Onebunne, said the demand for quality guinea pig meat has been increasing yearly because of the growing awareness of their nutritional benefits, especially among health-conscious people. He added that the production of guinea pigs gives small farmers a chance to increase their income and health, and offers an alternative means of livelihood to urban and rural farmers.

The Guinea Pig: Healing, Food, and Ritual in the Andes: Edmundo Morales: 9780816515585: Amazon.com: Books

This odd but enticing book presents fascinating information unlikely to be found in any other one place. The guinea pig, called cuy in Spanish, ubiquitous in the Andean regions of South America, is an appreciated food source that also plays a role in folk medicine and religious practices. The book’s abundant illustrations greatly contribute to points made in the text as Morales, born in Peru and now a university sociology teacher, explains in detail the natural history of the cuy, the methods of raising the animal, which ranges in venue from households to large farms, and the importance of cuy husbandry on local economies. To top it off, Morales also surveys cuy dishes. This visitation to Andean culture is as accessible to general readers as it is to students of Latin American civilization.

Guinea pigs are quite stoical animals, so it’s often a little difficult to tell when they’re unwell. This section contains advice on lots of different aspects of guinea pig health and hygiene, from grooming your pets to checking them over for certain health problems. In general, many experts recommend giving your pets a health check once a week, and giving them an anti-mange bath every month or two. It’s also important to be on the lookout for changes in both your guinea pigs bodies and their behaviour, as departures from normal are an important indicator of a health problem. This section includes information on both grooming and general healthcare.

Whether your guinea pig has short or long hair, is young or old, male or female, we hope this section has the advice you need to keep your pet in top condition.

The Global Voice of the U.S. Pork Industry

Pork exports add significantly to the bottom line of each U.S. pork producer, so opening new and expanding existing markets for U.S. pork exports through free trade agreements are vital to the continued success of the U.S. pork industry. U.S.

exports of pork have increased by 1,550 percent in value and nearly 1,300 percent in volume since 1989, the year the United States implemented the FTA with Canada and started opening international markets for value-added agriculture products. The importance of trade deals is evident given that the United States now exports more pork to the 20 countries with which it has FTAs than to all other nations combined. FTAs can be bilateral – between two countries – or regional – among three or more. The U.S. pork industry works to reduce or eliminate tariff and non-tariff barriers to U.S.

Pasture Raised Organic Pork, All Natural Pork

Our organic pasture-raised pork is quickly becoming a favorite of our customers. Our pigs live out on pasture for their entire stay here. They are moved to fresh pasture regularly so they stay clean and healthy. Their feed is free of antibiotics and they are not crowded in small pens. The pigs receive no antibiotics, hormones, or artificial supplements over their lifetime.

A pastured pig is always on fresh grass doing what God intended them to do; root, dig, and run. This definitely improves the quality of the meat and the quality of the animal’s life. In a barn, pigs must be fed all their vitamin’s and minerals. A pasture raised hog can root and dig to find its own minerals. On Good Earth Farms we don’t raise ordinary pigs, we raise Happy Pigs.

Nutritional Information for Pork:.In order to assist retail stores that sell meat and poultry products to post point-of-purchase nutrition information, FSIS has created downloadable charts for printing. These charts show nutrition information for the major cuts of meat and poultry.

Guinea Pigs and Cold Weather

This brings new challenges as the owner of a guinea pig. One of my concerns is how guinea pigs feel the cold. Its good to be aware of this so I know when to bring my guinea pig inside as the hutch is currently sitting out in the garden. So as guinea pig’s owners, its important we keep track of the conditions our guinea pig’s are living in. Guinea pigs and cold weather don’t go well together.

If you are too cold to be outside, then your guinea pig is probably too cold. If you are fine being outside without a jacket, then its a good sign that your guinea pig is fine being outside as well. I feel pretty comfortable about leaving my guinea pig outside as I like being outside and we are averaging temperatures above 23 degrees Celsius. Some owners feel that outbuildings are sufficient for a guinea pig in winter with some extra insulation being put on the hutch to help keep out the cold. Others disagree, and recommend bringing the guinea pigs inside the home.

Some owners always keep their guinea pig in outbuildings and have got on fine with this situation. This is why its good to keep an eye on the weather temperature to make sure a guinea pig isn’t suffering in silence!

Essential Tips To Remember

Pigs aren’t really high maintenance animals so it’s easy how to care for pigs. Whether you’re keeping a pot bellied pig as a pet or you’re running a pig farm, their healthy must be your number one priority. Like all animals, providing adequate living quarters, the proper nutrition, sanitation and health care is how to care for pigs. When building a house for your pig, remember that pigs are sensitive to heat and cold. If you keep pigs as a pet, you can just take them to the nearest clinic.

If you own a pig farm it would be better to get a specialized vet to make a house call so all your pigs can be checked out. Pigs have an impressive vitality and won’t get sick easily, but you should watch out for swine diseases. If you’re keeping pigs as a pet, you should have them neutered as early as possible. Spraying female pigs to make their lives longer is how to care for pigs. If you have a pet pig, keep them away from your neighbor dogs as much as possible.

On the farm, pigs are safe when mixed with cows and goats but keep them away from horses. Your pigs may startle the horses when they’re grazing which could result to the horse killing the pig.

How to Do a Health Check on a Guinea Pig: 10 Steps

If the lighter was hot, take your guinea pig to the vet immediately, they could be suffering from a burn. If the lighter was still cold and it gently hit your pig in the head, simply make sure they’re not in too much pain and carry on with what you were doing if they are clearly fine. My Guinea pig is 6 and has become slower over the last two weeks and within the last week has slowed his eating down virtually to nothing. He’s probably nearing the end of his life if he’s already six human years old. He’s lived a good long life, and there’s nothing you did to make that stop.

Stroke him softly, coo his name, and keep loud noises away. Give him guinea pig comfort food, like a tomato or watermelon piece. It’s not usually necessary to take a guinea pig’s temperature. If you think your guinea pig is sick, it’s safest to take it to a vet so a proper check can take place. To do it on your own, you’d have to use a pet rectal thermometer.

Guinea pigs have very small anuses, so you’d need to exercise extreme care, use lubrication, and ideally have had proper technique demonstrated by your vet.

The Humane Society of the United States

When you first bring your new guinea pig home, she’s likely to feel stressed by the transition to an unfamiliar environment. She may be away from her littermates for the first time and will be inundated with strange sounds and smells. When you’re setting up your guinea pig’s watering hole, keep in mind that a water bottle is better than a dish. If you had to eat oatmeal every day, three times a day, you’d get sick of it in no time. Your guinea pig’s basic diet is made up of commercial pellets, but keep him coming back for more with a rotating mix of fruits and vegetables.

It can be tempting to acquire a guinea pig on impulse. These little guys have a lot of appealing qualities; they’re small, gentle and personable, just to name a few. Here are important questions to consider before you dive headlong into a relationship. Most cages marketed for guinea pigs are way too small. Learn how to provide your pig with appropriate room to roam.

Guinea pigs don’t usually overeat, but it’s important to provide the proper balance of pellets, hay and fresh vegetables.

Colds, Pneumonia, and Respiratory Infections

If at any time your guinea pig’s condition appears to worsen, consult a veterinarian. Give Albon liquid, 240 milligrams per teaspoon, 5 milliliter per pound of weight, twice daily. If your guinea pig is shivering or seems cold, heat half of the cage with a lightbulb or put half of the cage on a heating pad set to low. Force fluids by mouth with eyedropper or syringe without needle every half hour. Continue until guinea pig is able to eat on its own.

Give as much as you can get the animal to take by eyedropper or syringe without needle. A mixture of 1 part vegetable juice drink, 1 part water, 1 part light corn syrup. Unused fluids should be discarded every 24 hours and made up fresh as needed. Mix together 1 jar carrot baby food, 2 jars vegetable-chicken or vegetable-turket combination of baby foods, 2 tablespoons light corn syrup, 3 tablespoons high-protein baby cereal, 1 jar baby orange juice, and 1 capsule acidophilus. Or mix together 1 part kitten milk replacement, 2 parts water, and 1 part vegetable-chicken or vegetable-turkey baby foods combination.

Add enough water so mixture can be given with an eyedropper or siringe without needle. Feed as much as you can get the animal to take each hour.

Basic Pig Care

A bag of Mauri Mini Pig feed should last you around 3 months. If you notice that your pig is getting overweight, cut back a little. Don’t snack or eat in front of a pig unless you are willing to share or give it something else to eat. Kids should be careful not to eat candy when they are loving on their pig. If your pig lives indoors, you want to keep Baby Oil on it to control flaking and keep their skin from being so dry.

If your pig lives outdoors and you want to control flaking, something with sun block is better. Have cotton balls readily available to stuff in your own ears! A pig can squeal louder than a jet engine at takeoff. Under normal circumstances, you can’t just stick your hand in a crate and grab a pig. Let your pig sleep with that for a while so that it can adjust a little easier.

The standard Pot Belly pig breeder does not want miniatures to exist because it hinders their ability to sell their pigs. Many people have been told that their pig was a miniature only to find out that miniature was a relative term. Just smile at them and nod your head. Three years from now, when your pig reaches it’s maturity, they will see…. Know How big I will get.

What Can Guinea Pigs Eat

Guinea pigs eat primarily hay, leafy green vegetables, and pellets specifically produced for them. Guinea pigs require plenty of vitamin C in their diets, as they are unable to produce their own. Guinea pigs eat anything put in front of them, but many foods will make them sick; so, the cavy must be fed a carefully curated diet. Pet guinea pigs vastly prefer the fresher hay, as it more closely replicates their natural diet and is nutritionally superior. Vegetables are an important source of nutrition and calories for guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs require a very specific balance of vitamins and minerals, which in turn requires specific vegetables in specific quantities. Guinea pigs eat numerous leafy greens, such as dandelion greens, kale, and arugula. Pet guinea pigs will happily consume many different types of fruit, but too much will cause them to gain weight. While any pet guinea pig would happily eat entire fruits, portions should be limited to two or three slices at a time. Guinea pigs under ten months old should be eating alfalfa-based pellets.

Guinea pigs need to be fed pellets made specifically for them. They should only be fed things that guinea pigs eat naturally, as well as pellets.

Horrors! You Have A Sick Pig

You live with the pig, you see the pigs normal actions on a daily basis. A sick pig looks sick! Pigs that do not feel well have a tendency to show it in their coat first. A pig that is not interested wholeheartedly and one hundred percent in his food is a pig that is not well. A pig that is not ready to eat is a pig that is not feeling well or is in extreme pain.

A pig standing with his back hunched and his hind legs far under the body is a sick pig. You might ask your vet to dose at the high end of the scale as it appears that a pig takes a good does to get through to the problem. A pig with pneumonia will run a temperature so first order is to get a temp. The pig does not usually run a temperature with a constipation problem. DO NOT give an enema or laxatives to a pig that is not passing anything as this could cost the pig it’s life.

A pig with a blockage will not necessarily run a temperature until the problem has become very serious. The new study that was done on potbellied pigs will tell you that the normal temperature for your pig is indeed lower than the commercial farm hogs. If your pig’s temperature is 102 then your pig is running a fever and you and your pig need help.

Guinea Pig Health Check: Daily and Weekly Routine

Guinea country profile

Guinea’s mineral wealth makes it potentially one of Africa’s richest countries, but its people are among the poorest in West Africa. Experiments with socialism and a two-year rule by junta have taken a toll on the people of Guinea. The 2010 election ushered in civilian rule but led to violent ethnic clashes, as well. Hundreds of thousands of refugees from Liberia and Sierra Leone have strained Guinea’s struggling economy. It was Guinea’s first democratic election since gaining independence from France in 1958.

The vote kindled ethnic tensions, as Mr Conde hails from the Malinke ethnic group, which makes up 35% of the population. The defeated, Cellou Dalein Diallo, is a member of the Peul ethnic group, to which 40% of Guineans belong. 1891 – France declares Guinea to be a colony, separate from Senegal. 1958 – Guinea becomes independent, with Ahmed Sekou Toure as president. 2000 – Start of incursions by rebels in Guinea’s border regions with Liberia and Sierra Leone which eventually claim more than 1,000 lives and cause massive population displacement. The government accuses Liberia, the Sierra Leonean United Revolutionary Front rebel group, Burkina Faso and former Guinean army mutineers of trying to destabilise Guinea. 2014 – Outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in southern Guinea.

KuneKune Pigs: A Hardy Homestead Breed

Kathy Petersen – KuneKune pigs are making their way into small scale farming operations across the country. If you’re looking to start free range pig farming, look no further than KuneKune pigs. From bacon to BBQ, feeding your family from the KuneKune pigs that you raise yourself gives you a great sense of pride. Children can learn so much about life from interactions with KuneKune pigs and you don’t have to worry about them being chased through the pastures. KuneKune pigs are very easy going and social creatures.

KuneKune pigs are very hardy little pigs and fair quite well in most climates. KuneKune pigs are a mid-size pig weighing 200-400 pounds and 24-36 inches tall. If you do fodder for other livestock, the KuneKune pigs will also enjoy a nice daily feeding of that. The main thing with KuneKune pigs is having a warm hay or straw bedded house in the winter months that is draft-free. KuneKune pigs come in a variety of colors; ginger/black, black/ginger, ginger, cream, black/white, brown/white, and more.

We have shipped KuneKune pigs across the U.S. using Delta and United Airlines. Having been one of the four original founders of the American KuneKune Pig Society, our pigs are registered with AKKPS, microchipped, vaccinated, and dewormed.

Hairless Guinea Pig Sales

They are completely hairless, except for a small amount of fuzz on their nose and paws. A skinny pig gene carrier is a haired guinea pig that carriers the skinny pig gene, and can be bred to a skinny pig to produce a litter of piggies, some of which are usually hairless. Skinny pigs provided an answer to prayer – we have never had any issues with allergies around them. Haired skinny pig gene carriers may have fewer allergens than normal guinea pigs, but we cannot guarantee that they are hypoallergenic, since they do have hair. It is highly recommended that you have two or more guinea pigs placed together.

Most of the cages you find at pet stores will not be large enough. Guinea pigs need room to have a protective house as well as room to run and play in their cage. Next, fill it with guinea pig litter, which can be found at a pet store or even places like Walmart. Now comes the fun part! Find, buy, or make an enclosure for the guinea pigs to hide and sleep in.

Add a food dish and water bottle and you’re all set! If you would like more creative ideas for cages, toys, and creating your guinea pig habitat. Every 2 to 4 weeks, you should bathe your hairless skinny pig. Hairless piggies may get dry skin or dry spots if they are not lotioned frequently enough.

Skinny Pig: The Hairless Guinea Pig

Since their initial domestication around five millennia BC, several guinea pig breeds have been developed. While not nearly as diverse as dogs or cats, there are at least eighteen recognized breeds of guinea pigs. Here I’ll be talking about a very peculiar one: The Skinny Pig. One thing that makes this hairless guinea pig breed peculiar is that they do not look anything like their wild counterparts. If you have never seen a skinny before, you might think it was another animal.

Skinny pigs were created in laboratories in 1978, as a result of crossing haired guinea pigs with a hairless lab strain. If you have both regular pigs and a skinny, you might notice that your skinny feels much warmer than your regular guinea pig. While caring for a skinny is not very different from regular guinea pig care, their lack of hair give Skinnies a number of special needs that their owners need to take care of. During winter, a Skinny pig’s skin tends to get dry and chapped. Finally, like regular guinea pigs, they need to be provided with fresh water and unlimited hay, as well as Vitamin C fortified pellets and fresh vegetables daily.

Summary Skinny pigs were created partly by accident in a lab. They are mostly hairless, unlike regular guinea pigs.

Guinea Pig Aggression

Aggression can be defined as a bite or any threat of a bite. A frightened guinea pig may act aggressive towards a perceived threat, especially if there is no opportunity for escape. If your guinea pig is showing fear aggression towards you or anyone else, stop trying to handle your guinea pig, instead start over by offering treats and petting your guinea pig softly. Work up to handling your guinea pig after petting is enthusiastically accepted. Be sure you are securely holding your guinea pig when you pick her up and keep sessions short.

Avoid scenarios which can cause your guinea pig to regress due to fright. You place your hand into your guinea pigs home to pick up a food dish or refill the water and you are rewarded with an angry guinea pig and a bite on the hand. To stop your guinea pig from acting aggressive towards intruders, begin by sitting next to the pen and reading a book out loud. Treats provide a distraction but also show them you are a friend who provides good things when around and not someone to be driven away. Using positive reinforcement methods will help your Pet learn to trust and accept you.

In addition to learning trust and acceptance, your guinea pig will gain self-confidence as they learn you are the source of all good things. A confident guinea pig will be better able to adjust to new people and new situations.

Clinical severity can vary from mild to severe and the disease can present as different syndromes attributable to immunosuppression by the field virus. Weak newborn piglets are better for virus isolation than mummified or aborted foetuses. To find this virus the Polymerase Chain Reaction or virus isolation can be used. If needed vaccine virus can be differentiated from field viruses by sequencing the ORF segments. Another practical method to separate field virus from Porcilis PRRS vaccine virus is by the type of cell’s where they grow on.

Field virus grows only on Porcine Alveolar Macrophages where European-strain live PRRS vaccine virus grows only on so called MARC cells. It is an easy technique as compared to VI but it detects any genetic part including that of dead virus. PCR tests are very sensitive detecting also very low quantities of virus. Both for VI and PCR the demonstration of the virus alone is not very meaningful. Most animals harbour the virus without clinical consequences so finding the virus must be associated with clinical signs to assert the diagnosis.

Antibody levels in sows, that repeatedly came in contact with the field or vaccine virus, will gradually become low in titre or even negative. So an individual pig that is seronegative can still be persistently infected with virus.

Guide On Raising And Keeping Pigs Healthy

The first thing that you have to keep in mind when you think about what do pigs eat is that these animals are omnivores. They can eat just about anything because they eat both plants and animals. They can also delve on worms, dead insects, garbage, trees or dead pigs, especially if they are left in the wild and they have no other choice but to hunt for their own food to survive. So you now have an idea about what do pigs eat and it is very easy to answer because they can eat almost anything if you venture into pig farming. To grow a kilo, a pig needs to consume 2.5 kilos of feed.

Pig antibiotics

Antibiotics are used to help treat many different bacterial diseases of pigs, and can be given as injections, in the feed or as a spray. Please contact your veterinary surgeon if you are concerned with the health or welfare of any animal under your care. When used correctly, antibiotics have an important role in improving health and welfare of pigs. There are concerns that resistance or resistant bacteria could be transferred from animal to human health, and vice versa, and reduce the effectiveness of some antibiotic treatments. It is vital that antibiotics are used in the correct and appropriate manner to minimise this possibility.

MSD Animal Health supports the responsible use of antibiotics. Many farm assurance schemes also produce similar guidelines to support best practice. Amfipen LA® 100 mg/ml Suspension for injectionAmoxypen® Injection 150 mg/ml Suspension for injectionAmoxypen LA® 150 mg/ml Suspension for injectionDepocillin® 300 mg/ml Suspension for injectionEngemycin® 10 % Solution for injectionEngemycin® 10 % Farm Pack Solution for injectionEngemycin LA® 200 mg/ml Solution for injectionEngemycin Spray® 25 mg/ml cutaneous spray, suspension for cattle, sheep and pigsNeopen® Suspension for injectionNuflor® 40 mg/g Premix for Medicated Feeding Stuff for Swine.

Guinea Pig Illness Symptoms + What They Might Mean

writing about eating: How to eat a pig’s head

The Boy and I headed over for dinner with Tim and Peter. Mine was a light, refreshing sidecar; Tim and The Boy went for absinthe. While I’d discovered plenty of advice on how to. Said object, there was precious little information on how to eat a pig’s head. And now here one was, eyeing me expectantly.

We started by tearing off the ears; the skin was fantastic, salty and crunchy, but not worthy of too much attention when the rest of the head was sitting there, full of secrets. Then The Boy flipped Babe on his head and started in on the sweetbreads. At least, we assume they were sweetbreads: they were where we expected sweetbreads to be. Everything that came off that piggy’s head was fabulous: rich and sweet, salty and fatty, warm and melty. Our waiter had compared the head to pork shoulder, but it was much more than that.

Of course they were as roasted as the rest of the head, and were basically delicate lumps of fat, not even as chewy as snails. We worked over the head a little longer, occasionally uncovering pockets of sweet, fatty treasure, finding cavities still sealed, the meat hot to the touch even after we’d been eating for an hour. We enjoyed a long, langorous, relaxed, four-hour dinner, at least half of which was focused on how to eat a pig’s head. It wsn’t just food consumed in the presence of friends; it was meat shared, a communal feast, an act of celebratory participation.

Pig Industry Fund

All pig owners must contribute $0.20 per head to the Pig Industry Fund when pigs are sold for $20 or more per head. Contributions must be made for sales within and outside South Australia. The Minister for Agriculture, Food, and Fisheries acts as the administrator of the Pig Industry Fund. Pork SA makes recommendations to the minister on spending priorities for the Fund.Contributing to the fund. The pig vendor is responsible for contributing to the fund unless a collection agent is involved.

Collection agents are responsible for contributing to the fund when they are involved in a sale. Pig vendors must confirm that the collection agent has made a contribution as they may become ineligible to take part in programs sponsored by the Pig Industry Fund if the contribution has not been forwarded. Collection agents must complete and return the contribution form and payment 14 days after the end of each month. Support the operation of Pork SA.How to access the fund. Pork SA will invite applications for projects seeking support from the Pig Industry Fund in early 2017 for the 2017-18 year.

The invitation will identify the areas that the industry considers to be priorities for project work in 2017-18. The invitation will be published in the Stock Journal and on the PIRSA PorkPage. Refunds can only be requested from the preceding financial year.

How To Take Care of A Very Young Baby Pig

Many times I have had inquiries on what to do with a baby pig that is for one reason or another without a real Mom. It is possible to do it even on new born’s, but the odds are fifty-fifty with those very young babies. We do not bottle feed here as for one thing there is not that time available and two, we want to know exactly what goes in and a baby that eats on his own from a flat pan will not aspirate the food into his lungs as easily. The most important thing to remember is that these babies need to be warm, very warm. Baby pigs cannot produce their own heat when they are born so by keeping them warm we are saving the energy that they would have to use for this purpose.

We have taught even 12 hour old babies how to eat out of a dish this way. A baby pig won’t take much at one time so they need to be fed often when very young. We start adding Gerber’s rice baby cereal at about three days, making it very liquid at first then gradually increasing the cereal as we go along. Nothing will kill a baby pig any quicker than bad diarrhea. Baby pigs born outside don’t need iron as they get it from the dirt as they go along.

The less you put into this baby that isn’t necessary the better off he will be. All babies will try you at some point in their life and to think that a hand raised baby will be worse than a sow fed baby is just not been proved to our satisfaction.

Have Fun at the Fair, But Don’t Pet the Pigs

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 23, 2017 – You go to the fair for corn dogs and cotton candy, not an infectious swine flu. Researchers are warning that flu can spread among pigs at agricultural fairs and then make the leap to humans, which could potentially lead to a swine flu epidemic. The good news is that people can take steps to protect themselves by doing simple things, including keeping as much distance from the pigs as possible. The new study looked at 18 cases of H3N2 swine flu in people in Ohio and Michigan in 2016. All were linked to agricultural fairs and exposure to pigs infected with flu.

Most of the flu cases were mild, the study authors said in a university news release. The threat remains that a pig-to-people transfer of a flu virus could spark a worldwide crisis, the researchers said. Use signs to warn people against eating and drinking near the exhibits, and provide instructions about proper handwashing. Encourage those at higher risk of flu – such as young kids, people over 65 and those with weakened immune systems – to stay away from animal exhibits. The new study stemmed from a previous one led by Ohio State researchers, too.

Nearly 80 percent of them were harboring the flu virus, although many didn’t appear to be sick. For more about swine flu, visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Meet My Vet: Guinea Pig Health Check Appointment

Guinea Pig Welfare » Afterbirth

Twenty four hours can bring about a lot of changes after the birth of a litter of guinea pig pups. Pups may be born too quickly and the sow may not get the sacks off in time. The sack should be broken and and the pup rubbed in a towel or similar, sometimes these pups are dead on arrival, other times they die shortly after, or they may survive with a little help. Straining for too long could mean the sow is giving birth to a pup in the breech position, she should be helped to litter or it is likely both will die. Never pull the pup straight down, gently but firmly, twist the body until the pup is born.

Placentas may be born up to an hour after the birth, at random during the birth or after each pup is born. These pups should not be handled and handling of the sow should be kept to a minimum in order for her to bond with her pups. Lots of births are not witnessed and on finding the pups more questions about what is ‘normal’ arise. Ideally pups will be ‘ready to run’ soon after the birth, but sometimes there is a weaker pup or two that is more ‘wobbly’ than the others. Immediately after the birth sows will often look after their own needs first before gathering the pups around them to drink.

Sows are usually very hungry after giving birth and will settle down to eat after cleaning themselves and then will eventually get round to gathering the pups up. Supplementing pups should be done with caution and only in extreme cases where mum is feeding the other pups and perhaps leaving one out.

OSU Extension Service: KBREC

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus is a relatively new swine virus, and has, until recently, been seen mostly east of us. It’s rapidly coming our way – diagnosed most recently in California. The State Veterinarian, the OSU Swine Specialist and OSU Veterinarians are working on the release of a fact sheet for our region; it should be out soon. In the immediate there are a few things you need to know. I have taken precautionary steps in regards to the importation of swine into the state.

Effective Monday February 10, the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection required for animals entering Oregon must contain the following statement from the issuing out-of-state veterinarian,. Here are some links to the California Pork Councils Fact Sheets to answer some basic questions about the virus. If you have questions, feel free to contact OSU Swine Specialist direct, his number is: 503-623-8395 or Email: gene. You must submit a completed Klamath County 4-H Swine Division Bill of Sale for your animal to the Extension Office no later than NOON May 30. Out-of-state pigs must a completed Certificate of Veterinary Inspection from the state of origin with your animal at spring weigh-in.

The Youth Market Livestock Loan was established to promote youth livestock projects that may otherwise be financially restrictive. The purpose is to provide an interest-free loan to be used towards purchasing a market quality animal to raise as a project.

Most Common Health Problems in Pet Guinea Pigs

Diarrhea in guinea pigs is caused mainly due to excess feeding of fruits and green vegetables, infections, and other intestinal complications. If the diarrhea is extremely watery, then take your guinea pig to the vet as soon as possible. These problems can culminate in to a fatal form of pneumonia it is advised not to house guinea pigs, rabbits, and dogs together. If you think that your pet guinea pig is suffering from respiratory infections, consult a vet immediately. Guinea pigs are susceptible to excess heat, and keeping them in an overly-heated room can prove to be fatal.

If your guinea pig is often exhibiting shallow and rapid breathing and a lack of energy, then wrap the animal in a cool towel and spray cool water on it at regular intervals. Generally, a female guinea pig breeds for the first time before she turns 8 months of age. If you are breeding guinea pigs, then make sure that you are not leaving it till too late; it can prove to be fatal to the guinea pig. Mange mites commonly lead to hair loss and persistent scratching in the pigs. Guinea pigs are strictly vegetarians, and vitamin C is an important constituent of their diet.

If the vitamin C intake subsides, the guinea pig will start suffering from weight loss, dehydration, diarrhea, difficulty in walking, nasal and eye discharge, and loss of energy. Thus, conduct a thorough research before you decide on adopting or buying a guinea pig as a pet.
