Cavy Savvy: A Guinea Pig Blog: Can Guinea Pigs Eat Dandelion Greens?

Let’s make one thing absolutely clear up front: Our humans bought us organic dandelion greens from the store. You can pick your own dandelion greens, of course, but you’ve got to be careful; you don’t want to just grab dandelion greens from areas where people might walk dogs or use pesticides. Assuming you have dandelion greens that are safe to feed us, we can have them 2-4 times per week. For this new food tasting, the humans fed all 3 of us together. They said they wanted to try to get us to bond this way before using the dreaded bathing technique. The dandelion greens were great, which was more than I could say for the company. Broccoli kept poking his nose onto my side of the plate, invading my personal space. He even ran around behind me and tried to mount me in the middle of my meal! That’s extremely poor etiquette, and of course I had to lash out to let him know that’s not okay. The humans had to separate us again which makes me think we’re all going to be bathed soon.

Guinea Pigs with Hair Loss

Hair loss in guinea pigs can occur for a variety of reasons. The most common is hair loss as a result of either the guinea pig itself or another guinea pig chewing on the hair over a period of time. Older guinea pigs or guinea pigs that are higher in the pecking order will commonly chew on the hair of younger guinea pigs to the point where the hair will start to fall out. This allows them to assert their force over these younger guinea pigs. Another reason for hair loss in female guinea pigs is repeated breading. The more times they have bred, the more hair they will lose. There is very little that you can do to reduce hair loss besides stopping them from breading. Usually this will cause little harm to the guinea pig although they may be at a higher risk of infection due to the lack of protection that their hair gives them. Some bacterial infections and diseases can cause hair loss in guinea pigs. Hair loss is far more common in older guinea pigs as it is in younger ones. Ringworm and other parasitic infection have been known to cause hair loss. If you have a younger guinea pig and you notice signs of hair loss a trip to the veternarian is probably in order to pin down the root cause of the hair loss before it is too late.

Guinea pig making low grunting noises?

As an guinea pig owner you should have this as a common knowledge. Grunting or rumbling or vibrating is a vocal signal for many emotions. They have grunt when they feel happy and content or when they are feeling curious. They can also grunt when they are complaining as they don’t like it being touched there. Their complaining grunt is more high pitched than the happy grunt. They are also likely tp grunt when you give them food and leave them alone in their nice cage, they are happiest when eating. As for the backwards motion, its important to know that GPs are preyed on animals by instinct and are naturally scared and timid of a lot of loud noises and sudden movements. They could be scared of you doing something loud that triggers their automatic hiding instincts. Try having a towel or cloth around them when you give them lappies so that when they get scared, they can dig their head and bury their eyes in there. When they hop around periodically and vibrate, its likely that they are popcorning or happy and doing and guinea pig dance. Its characterized by a funny shaking of the head and short jumping into the air. As for the foot she may have a sore has she been walking on wires or something be careful!

Guinea Pig Pregnancy Calculator

Uses an average 68 day gestation period for a Guinea Pig. Guinea Pig gestation periods can generally be anywhere from 63-71 days. The Guinea Pig Pregnancy Calculator is a much simpler process to use than the often-used Guinea Pig Gestation Chart. Without a calculator or chart you had to count the days until your Guinea Pig’s due date. GestationCalculator.com is providing this Guinea Pig pregnancy calculator as a service. It’s meant to help visitors answer the question ‘How Long is a Guinea Pig Pregnant?’. It’s important that you enter the 1st day a Guinea Pig is bred for it to work. Some Guinea Pig breeders will find this tool very helpful. The Gestation Period for a Guinea Pig is approximately 63-71 days from the first breeding until the Guinea Pig is born. The Guinea Pig Gestation Period Calculator above attempts to generalize the estimation of the due date without any additional factors using a 68 day gestation period for a guinea pig. Did you know grass is a guinea pigs natural diet? A guinea pig can have up to five litters per year. A female guinea pig can become pregnant within 6-48 hours after giving birth.

Guinea Pig Facts

The most interesting thing I have learned while researching guinea pigs for the past few years is that there are between 9 and 12 different types of breeds. This site provides a great resource for new pig-owners who cannot tell if their guinea pig is excited or scared to death. There’s a variety of noises they make, and not all guinea pigs are the same. Contrary to popular belief, guinea pigs require a lot of space to live in. Since the guinea pig ancestors were foragers, they had lots of room to roam. A lot of resources recommend to give your piggy “Floor time,” meaning time during the day that they can run free in a room in your house. There is a great resource for measuring the required space for your piggies at Guinea Pig Cages Store. This site has really inspired me on building more effective and safe guinea pig cages. Guinea Lynx is a very detailed medical reference guide for guinea pig owners, breeders, and rescue workers. Right now I am the proud mother of two very unique guinea pigs: Sonic and Tails. Throughout the years, I have spoiled him so much that now he and Tails each have 5-8 square feet to live in and “Lap time” daily and “Floor time” weekly. The boys unfortunately did not end up getting along, as Tails was a more dominant personality and constantly acted threatening towards Sonic.

Skinny Pig: The Hairless Guinea Pig

Since their initial domestication around five millennia BC, several guinea pig breeds have been developed. While not nearly as diverse as dogs or cats, there are at least eighteen recognized breeds of guinea pigs. Here I’ll be talking about a very peculiar one: The Skinny Pig. One thing that makes this hairless guinea pig breed peculiar is that they do not look anything like their wild counterparts. If you have never seen a skinny before, you might think it was another animal. Skinny pigs were created in laboratories in 1978, as a result of crossing haired guinea pigs with a hairless lab strain. If you have both regular pigs and a skinny, you might notice that your skinny feels much warmer than your regular guinea pig. While caring for a skinny is not very different from regular guinea pig care, their lack of hair give Skinnies a number of special needs that their owners need to take care of. During winter, a Skinny pig’s skin tends to get dry and chapped. Finally, like regular guinea pigs, they need to be provided with fresh water and unlimited hay, as well as Vitamin C fortified pellets and fresh vegetables daily. Summary Skinny pigs were created partly by accident in a lab. They are mostly hairless, unlike regular guinea pigs.

Hairless Guinea Pig Sales

What is a skinny pig? What is a skinny pig gene carrier? A skinny pig is a type of hairless guinea pig. A skinny pig gene carrier is a haired guinea pig that carriers the skinny pig gene, and can be bred to a skinny pig to produce a litter of piggies, some of which are usually hairless. Why don’t they have any hair? In 1978, a spontaneous genetic mutation in guinea pigs arose in a lab that produced hairless guinea pigs. Haired skinny pig gene carriers may have fewer allergens than normal guinea pigs, but we cannot guarantee that they are hypoallergenic, since they do have hair. How is their demeanor? Guinea pigs are very sociable animals and love attention. Is it okay to only have one guinea pig or will it get lonely? Guinea pigs thrive when they are placed in groups, rather than living alone. How much does it cost to take care of a guinea pig? For two guinea pigs, we spend about $12/month on litter and about $8/month on food. How big should their cage be? One guinea pig needs 7 sq ft, and 2 guinea pigs need 8 sq ft. Guinea pigs need room to have a protective house as well as room to run and play in their cage. Creating your guinea pig habitat is a great experience! One guinea pig needs a “Habitat” or cage that is at least 7 sq ft, and 2 need at least 8 sq ft. Add a food dish and water bottle and you’re all set! If you would like more creative ideas for cages, toys, and creating your guinea pig habitat. Every 2 to 4 weeks, you should bathe your hairless skinny pig.

In Switzerland It Is Illegal To Own Just One Guinea Pig

Guinea pig are tiny sociable rodents that cannot bear being lonely. That is why in Switzerland they have an unusual animal welfare law that prohibits guinea pig owners from keeping the tiny furry rodents on their own. Priska Kung, a swiss animal lover, runs a ‘rent-a-guinea pig’ service to provide companion to lonely guinea pigs that have recently lost their partners. She house around 80 guinea pigs in the village of Hadlikon, 30 kilometers from Zurich. Kung, a teacher by profession, is the founder and the president of IG Meerschweinchen, one of Switzerland’s guinea pig associations. At the age of 2, she got her first guinea pig and she started breeding them when she was 12. “It’s a hobby that costs me more money than I earn from it,” says Kung. Kung claims that filing a guinea pig for rent is not easy. Even though guinea pigs are famous for their friendly characteristics they can be choosy about who they stay with. That is why she ensures both of the guinea pigs match before she rent them out. “It’s important that none of the rental guinea pigs just keep getting passed on,” says Küng. “If an animal has been hired out once, it either stays with me for the rest of its life or it moves somewhere else for good.” Thanks to Kung’s ‘rent-a-guinea pig’ service guinea pig owners doesn’t need to purchase younger guinea pig and get stuck in a never ending circle of purchasing new guinea pig every time the old one dies.

How To Take Care of A Very Young Baby Pig

Many times I have had inquiries on what to do with a baby pig that is for one reason or another without a real Mom. It is possible to do it even on new born’s, but the odds are fifty-fifty with those very young babies. We do not bottle feed here as for one thing there is not that time available and two, we want to know exactly what goes in and a baby that eats on his own from a flat pan will not aspirate the food into his lungs as easily. The most important thing to remember is that these babies need to be warm, very warm. Baby pigs cannot produce their own heat when they are born so by keeping them warm we are saving the energy that they would have to use for this purpose. We have taught even 12 hour old babies how to eat out of a dish this way. A baby pig won’t take much at one time so they need to be fed often when very young. We start adding Gerber’s rice baby cereal at about three days, making it very liquid at first then gradually increasing the cereal as we go along. Nothing will kill a baby pig any quicker than bad diarrhea. Baby pigs born outside don’t need iron as they get it from the dirt as they go along. The less you put into this baby that isn’t necessary the better off he will be. All babies will try you at some point in their life and to think that a hand raised baby will be worse than a sow fed baby is just not been proved to our satisfaction.

Managing Pig Health: A Reference for the Farm

The book is a comprehensive reference guide to managing pig health, with the emphasis on health, on the premise that managing health is the primary way to effectively prevent and tackle disease. The book covers each element of pig health management starting with an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the pig. Managing Pig Health, a reference for the farm – the new, updated edition of the original “Green pig book”, Managing Pig Health and the Treatment of Disease offers a fresh and comprehensive guide to practical veterinary information for pig farmers, veterinarians and technologists around the world. The book is a comprehensive reference guide to managing pig health. The emphasis on health has been reinforced, on the premise that managing health is the primary way to effectively prevent and tackle disease. Managing Pig Health was written with a clear objective – to help the pig producer or advisor understand and manage health on the farm, including identifying health/disease issues that arise. Managing Pig Health aims to provide an understanding of the issues at stake to ensure best practices, best health and welfare and maximise the productivity of pig farms. The book maintains its original 17 chapters covering the various elements of on-farm pig health management starting with an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the pig. The second chapter “Understanding Health and Disease” looks at infectious and non-infections agents and how they impact the health of the pig, both individually and at a farm level. There is a comprehensive section on recognising health problems on the farm, managing the environment, staff training, use of records and planning for efficient production. Managing Pig Health retains its comprehensive coverage of pig health by detailing management practices, diseases, observations and procedures at each stage of the production cycle from reproduction, through gestation to farrowing and on through the weaner, grower and finishing periods. Finally, Managing Pig Health also covers surgical and practical procedures and health and safety issues on the farm.

The Laboratory Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Hamster, and Other Rodents

The risk of acquiring a disease from laboratory animals has decreased since most laboratory animals are now produced with defined microbiologic profiles. On occasion there are situations where wild animals or field-collected animals are required for research. The use of wild rodents or field-collected rodents may expose the research staff to diseases that have been eliminated from research colonies. The occupational health concern of exposure to animal antigens is also discussed. Both prevention and engineering standards are discussed that will lower the exposure to the animal antigens. The risk of acquiring a disease from many types of laboratory animals has decreased because most laboratory animals are now produced with defined microbiologic profiles but there are still instances when wild animals or field-collected animals are required for research. The use of wild rodents or field-collected rodents may expose the research staff to diseases that have been excluded, if not eliminated, from research colonies. For some parasitic diseases, humans can serve as an intermediate host; for others humans are the final host of the parasite. In the latter case, the elimination of the intermediate host should prevent the complete lifecycle and protect the laboratory animal worker. Knowledge about the transmission of the disease plays an important part in effectively reducing the risk of the pathogen. The focus here is to review diseases that might be present in research animals and might be transmitted to immunocompetent research staff during experiments. Finally, allergic reactions to laboratory animals are discussed in the chapter because exposure to animal allergens represents a significant risk to personnel who handle animals.

Are you a guinea pig?

The answer to that question – or at least what should be the answer – is the name of a new campaign launched today by Environmental Defense Fund, in cooperation with the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families coalition and a number of its member organizations. I Am Not a Guinea Pig is a new online campaign that provides tools and information Americans from all walks of life can use to press for fundamental reform of our nation’s toxic chemical law, the Toxic Substances Control Act. I Am Not a Guinea Pig is aimed at helping to ensure that the voices of millions of Americans who are concerned about and affected by exposures to untested and unsafe chemicals are heard as Congress begins the first serious effort to overhaul the 34-year-old TSCA. The campaign will use a variety of social media, including a website, a Facebook page with daily updates, and a #NAGP Twitter hashtag. Our thanks go out to our partners in Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families with whom we’ve worked in our initial effort: Autism Society, Health Care Without Harm, Learning Disabilities Association of America, Moms Rising, Reproductive Health Technologies Project and Teens Turning Green. The campaign initially focuses on three groups at particular risk from toxic chemical exposures: teens, children and health professionals. We’ll be expanding the campaign over time to include others at risk, and we’ll continue until we’ve achieved the campaign’s fundamental aim: a strong new chemicals policy in the United States that protects all Americans from toxic chemicals.

Guinea Pig Family

Rather than kidnap people off the street, or experiment on himself, this one chooses to use his family as guinea pigs. It’s not exactly known if he continues to experiment on her, but Huey does refer to her as a guinea pig on a regular basis. Watabe’s experiments grant her considerable power – at the cost of her powers being uncontrollable while in certain mental states, capable of damaging her own health if she uses them too much, and the sprinklers that went off whenever she lost control during experiments and set the room on fire gave her a crippling fear of rain. Cyborg 009’s Ivan Whiskey was experimented on by his Mad Scientist father Gamo and turned into Cyborg 001, a powerful psychic. It’s unclear as to how much of an experiment it was, but given that he had full access to his and Carla’s adoptive daughter Mikasa but doesn’t seem to have done anything with her, he seems to have decided to keep it in the family. Mimic, an early X-Men villain got his powers either a.) his father experimenting on him to develop superpowers or b.) his father experimenting on him to activate his mutant powers. There was also some overlap with Professor Guinea Pig, as his father had initially been experimenting on himself, and some of the resulting mutations were passed on to Bruce. In The Mortal Instruments, Valentine experimented on his own children in the womb to create better Shadowhunters. Sandpaper Kiss: The press and the narrator keep on speculating why Dr Faulkner would experiment on his own wife and daughter, and the public thinks he’s a monster. Ravenloft: The first human to be subjected to Frantisek Markov’s deranged surgical experiments was his own wife, Ludmilla. Caulder/Stolos’ family in Advance Wars: Days of Ruin were an experiment in human cloning, and his son Cyrus a Guinea Pig for Grand Theft Me on top of it. Whateley Universe: while such experiments are disturbingly common, the most notable example is an inversion: when the Bell Witch dunked an infant Nacht into the Erebos, not only was it a magical experiment rather than a scientific one, Kate wasn’t her child at all; she’d just kidnapped some kid, figuring that dropping her into a place of utter darkness would kill her, but when she not only survived but displayed power over the Erebos, she adopted the child and used her in her schemes.

Guinea Pig FAQ, Version 1.2.2

Archive-name: pets/guinea-pig-faq Posting-Frequency: monthly Version: 1.2.2 This is the seventh posted version of the guinea pig FAQ. A current version of this FAQ can be found: * In the newsgroups rec. Why would I want a guinea pig? As far as small pets go, guinea pigs are among the easiest to care for, and also rate high on the cuddliness scale. Where do I get a guinea pig? There are basically four places to get guinea pigs – from a breeder, from a pet store, from an ordinary guinea-pig owner who has had a litter of small guinea pigs, or from an animal shelter. Do check out your local animal shelter to see if they have guinea pigs – you may be able to find a lovable pet and save a guinea pig at the same time. If you go to pick him up and he shows very little interest in the procedure, there’s something wrong- a healthy guinea pig will usually either run away from your hand or investigate it. What should I feed my guinea pig? A guinea pig’s main diet should consist of dried timothy hay, supplemented by pellets and fresh vegetables. If you don’t have a lot of time to spend with your guinea pig, or are gone for much of the day, your guinea pig may be a lot happier if you get him or her a friend. There are no known health reasons to neuter a male guinea pig, although I hear that it can reduce their sex drive and cause them to stop mounting female guinea pigs, if that is an issue. Is this serious? First of all, if there’s any doubt about the nature of the disease, take your guinea pig to a veterinarian right away! See the previous section for techniques for finding a good guinea pig vet. What can I do? It’s normal for a guinea pig to be afraid of you at first, and some guinea pigs, depending on personality, are always a little shy. Where else can I get information about guinea pigs? If you want more information of a rather technical sort about guinea pig health, you can try Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs by V.C.G. Richardson. In addition to containing some documents with information about guinea pigs, it has an archive of all the guinea pig related posts on rec.
