Small Pet Profile: Guinea Pigs

Characteristics: Naturally social and living in large groups in the wild, guinea pigs need involved owners who provide them with a variety of toys and exercise opportunities. Cavies would prefer a companion, though most will do well alone if kept active. The average adult female grows to 1-1/2 to 2 lbs, while the average male grows to 2 to 2-1/2 lbs. Like other rodents, their teeth grow throughout their lifetime, which averages anywhere between 4 to 8 years. Appearance: There are 13 recognized breeds of cavies with varying fur coat lengths in a variety of solid, mixed, and banded colors. Most of these 13 breeds are variations of each other – Abyssinian, American, Peruvian, Silkie, and Teddy each have a Satin variety, which means the two breeds look similar though a Satin has a more glossy sheen and softer coat. 1 Preventable Health Problem: Prevent Vitamin C deficiency with a specially formulated pellet diet that includes a daily, fresh supply of grass hay and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Housing: Some recommend that one cavy needs at least 3 square feet of cage space, but bigger is always better. Furnish a hiding place and toys for your guinea pig’s health and happiness. Guinea pigs also need a lot of chewable, hard substances to keep their teeth worn down. A solid base in the cage along with suitable nontoxic bedding are also a must to protect both your cavy and her tender feet.

Common Guinea Pig Health Problems

Flystrike is a potentially fatal condition which occurs when flies lay their eggs around a guinea pig’s anus. In the summer, this whole process can take as little as a few hours, so it’s advisable that guinea pigs are checked at least twice a day. Symptoms to look out for include eggs and maggots around a guinea pig’s anus, wounds and skin loss. Pets suffering from obesity, dental problems, diarrhoea, arthritis and skin wounds are at high risk of flystrike as flies are attracted to guinea pigs suffering from dirty bottoms or wet fur. Guinea pigs living in dirty hutches are also susceptible, as flies like damp and smelly conditions. Guinea pigs with flystrike are often given antibiotics to help prevent infection and some vets also use anti-parasitic products to try and penetrate the skin and kill any remaining maggots. There are several different species of mites, however the most common one to affect guinea pigs is Trixacarus caviae, which causes mange. Fur mites are also common and the rabbit ear mite, Psoroptes cuniculi, causes a condition known as canker. A variety of treatments are available to help treat guinea pigs infested with mites. Guinea pigs with ringworm will have circular, hairless, sore spots. You may notice your guinea pig scratching excessively, biting, suffering hair loss, and in a worse case scenario, suffering seizures. If you think your guinea pig is suffering from mange, take him to the vet immediately. Guinea pigs are unique in that they can’t produce Vitamin C themselves and are reliant on Vitamin C in their diet. To help prevent Vitamin C deficiency always feed your pet a complete food for guinea pigs.

An HSI Factsheet The Environmental, Public Health, and Social Impacts of Pig Factory Farming Since the mid-20th century, small, extensive farms have given way to massive, commercial pig production facilities. 3 Large industrial farm animal production facilities, or factory farms, that often confine thousands of pigs indoors,4 are becoming more widespread throughout the world, particularly in developing countries. 6 A significant implication of the shift toward factory farms has been the “Movement of large numbers of animals from pastures and open-air lots into confined spaces with no grass or vegetation for grazing.”7 Factory farms may have particularly severe implications for animal welfare, including the intensive confinement of farm animals in enclosures that prevent them from moving comfortably or expressing most basic natural behaviors. 22 Pigs produce four times more waste than human beings23 and “One animal facility with a large population of animals can easily equal a small city in terms of waste production.”24 While traditional farming systems combine animal agriculture with crop agriculture, thereby balancing the number of animals with the crops’ ability to absorb the animals’ manure, at industrial farm animal production facilities, the amount of manure typically exceeds the ability of the surrounding land to absorb it. 29 In their 2006 visit to Perote Valley, home to the highest concentration of pig factory farms in the country,30 the Mexican Congress Commission on the Environment and Natural Resources also observed that “[a]reas for disposal of waste and pig manure [were] not far enough from water sources” at visited pig factory farms. 36 The growth in farm animal production is projected to increase strain on water resources, particularly due to the high water demand involved in growing animal feed.37 Farm animals also require water for hydration, and at industrial operations-to clean enclosures and sheds, to dispose of waste, and to cool the animals. 41 Numerous studies have shown adverse physical and mental health effects from ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and nuisance odors originating from industrial pig factory farms, on both factory farm workers as well as people in neighboring communities. To accelerate weight gain and prevent disease in the stressful and unhygienic conditions characteristic of these industrial settings, many factory farms feed farm animals classes of antibiotics critical to human medicine. 55 The use of antibiotics in farm animal production contributes to antibiotic resistance in humans,56 and a study of airborne concentrations of resistant bacterial forms at pig factory farm operations found that bacteria were recovered inside and outside the facilities at concentrations that could cause a potential human health hazard. 58 Social Costs A 2010 report on the economic impacts of industrialized pig production estimated that if industrialized pig production facilities replaced independent farms producing the same amount of animals, approximately two pig farmers would be left without a job for each new job created. In the Philippines, for example, although the number of commercial pig farms and pigs per farm increased between 1991 and 2002 , the number of pig producers decreased. 66 Many of the pig factory farms in Mexico are now vertically integrated and “Owned by firms involved in every stage of the production process, from hog-raising to the packaging, sale and distribution of pork products.”71 Unable to compete with large factory farms, many small-scale producers have had to exit the industry. In rural communities where fewer, larger farms have replaced smaller, locally owned farms, residents have experienced lower family income, higher poverty rates, lower retail sales, reduced housing quality, and persistent low wages for farm workers. In addition to impairing water and air quality in surrounding areas, factory farms threaten public health, jeopardize the ability of independent family farms to stay in business, and diminish quality of life in rural communities.

Some scientists have been their own guinea pigs in the lab

In 1929, he tried it on himself, thereby joining an age-old club: scientists who use themselves as guinea pigs. When researchers are willing to use themselves as guinea pigs, that “Should be reassuring” to people who eventually receive those treatments, says Altman, a global fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a medical columnist for the New York Times. “The researcher is willing to take the risk before asking anyone else to take the risk.” Scientists experiment on themselves for all kinds of reasons. Or as with Wendy Suzuki, a neuroscientist who made a mid-career detour a decade ago to study the effects of exercise on her own brain, they may use personal experiments with lower stakes to find new avenues for research. Yoon’s research has shed light on drug resistance in lice and how they transmit disease. A researcher’s confidence based on self-experimentation should have no effect on whether others receive a treatment, Annas warns. In any experiment, the researcher must abide by consent laws and reasonably protect a patient’s safety. Annas points out ethical conundrums for researchers who make themselves part of the experiment. “The research is just too biased,” he says, noting that people who experiment on themselves may ignore the risks of a procedure. Although a probe against Zagury was eventually dropped, questions remain about his research practices, and the National Institutes of Health restricted collaborations with him. Researchers no longer need to infect themselves with cholera – as Max von Pettenkofer did in 1892 to test how the disease spreads – or place themselves in a cyanide-filled chamber to show the effects of poisonous gases on pulmonary function – as Joseph Barcroft did in 1917. Because there is no central database of self-experimentation, Altman says, there’s no way to know how many scientists may be testing new therapies or ideas on themselves. Given the endless curiosity of researchers the temptation to become a human guinea pig is unlikely to die anytime soon.

Care of Guinea Pigs Introduction Guinea pig is the common name for a cavy. The guinea pig neither comes from Guinea, nor is it a pig. If you are planning to buy two or more guinea pigs so that they might keep each other company, remember that two adult males will not tolerate each other’s company and housing them together can lead to fighting, resource hoarding and eventually death for the submissive, weaker guinea pig. Remember, guinea pigs are quite precocious and can start breeding as young as 4-6 weeks of age unless you want lots of guinea pigs, it is best to get either the male or female or both guinea pigs neutered if you are housing a male and a female together. Bedding in guinea pig cages serves three purposes: it is the litter box, it serves as a substrate in which the guinea pig may nest and burrow, and it provides a soft surface on which to walk. Guinea pig pellets are also an important part of your guinea pig’s diet. Small amounts, about 1-2 ounces per adult guinea pig, should be fed in addition to hay and raw vegetables and fruit. Supplementing your guinea pig’s diet with fresh vegetables and fruits will help prevent boredom, as well as make sure that your guinea pig ‘s diet is optimum. Things to consider when feeding your guinea pig fresh foods are: 1. As mentioned above, the water should preferably be provided to your guinea pig through a water bottle. Respiratory infections can quickly lead to pneumonia in a guinea pig and guinea pigs with these signs should be seen by a veterinarian. Never house Guinea pigs and rabbits in the same hutch, and limit dog/guinea pig interactions. Reproduction Most people who buy guinea pigs for pets aren’t buying them to breed guinea pigs unfortunately, sometimes the pet stores unknowingly sell pregnant females. Any person considering a guinea pig as a pet should spend some time around guinea pigs before adopting them.

The Bankrupt PIGS of Europe

What brought the PIGS to the edge of the abyss? All are neo-socialist states that provide welfare for poor people, generous unemployment, universal health care, early retirement and comfortable pensions. For 30 years, the fertility rate of Europe has been below the 2.1 children per woman necessary to replace a population. In Western Europe, the passing of the native-born goes on quietly, as Third World peoples come to fill the empty spaces left by the aborted and unconceived. As the number of young entering the European labor forces shrinks, the number of seniors and aged grows. In Europe, wages and taxes are high, regulations heavy, unions strong, and lawyers ubiquitous. Greece is the first European nation to hit the wall. As an EU member state, she is obligated to keep her deficit to 3 percent of GDP. But this year’s is 12.7 percent, and Athens needs to issue $75 billion in bonds alone to finance the deficit and roll over debt. To borrow, Athens must pay more than twice the interest rate Germany pays. As Portugal, Ireland and Spain gaze on, Greece approaches a moment of truth. Should she default, their bonds, too, will plunge in value out of fear of a copycat default, and the interest rate they pay would also rise. One option is for the EU to bail out Greece with a huge loan. If Greece cannot meet her debt obligations now, how could she pay back the loan? And if the EU cannot compel Greece to make deep budget cuts today, what leverage would the EU have after bailing out Athens and removing today’s pressure on the government? Why should America bail out Greece, when the EU is larger and richer and did not help bail out California in 2009? The stimulus bill did that in 2009, to which Europe contributed nothing. Where Greece is at today we shall all arrive tomorrow.

“Pig Island” Pigs Returned!

The pigs from Pig Island will not be going home with a group of animal rights activists. On Tuesday, New York based Animal rights activist group Farm Sanctuary, removed a half dozen pigs from a private island on the San Joaquin River. On Friday, San Joaquin Sheriffs office ordered the hogs be returned to their owner Roger Stevenson. Farm Sanctuary Volunteer Suzie Costin said this the day after the pigs were removed. “These pig were sort of an attraction. They were being fed beer and people were riding them,” she said. Activists say they got permission from the owner of the island to remove the pigs but, the owner of the island and the owner of the pigs are two different people. “If he [the owner]wanted them off the island all he had to do was call me up and tell me,” said Stevenson. Stevenson says the owner of the island allowed him to put the pig on the land four years ago. The pigs ate overgrown vegetation and weeds, and it’s unclear why the owner of the island may have wanted the pigs removed. Stevenson has not been able to contact the owner of the island and neither could ABC10. UC Davis Animal Clinic examined the pigs after they were removed from the island and Farm Sanctuary is the only one who has access to the medical records. Stevenson says he got confirmation that the mother pig is pregnant and the other hogs are in good health. “I hope to take them back to the island if I can get permission from the owner.” he said. For the time being the pigs have been moved to Calaveras County and are eating overgrown vegetation at a golf course in Arnold.

Hog Wild in Florida! Feral Pigs a Problem

Downloadable pdf Florida’s population boom now includes some 500,000 wild hogs whose piggish habits are causing problems for farmers, residents and health officials as well as native flora and fauna. Wild or feral hogs can now be found in every Florida county and in at least 35 states – including 1 to 2 million hogs in the Southeast. In Florida, some of the highest densities of feral hogs can be found north and west of Lake Okeechobee where large forested tracts, dense vegetation, abundant water and limited public access provide an ideal environment for the pigs. Giuliano, who conducts research on the animals with George Tanner, a professor in the UF wildlife ecology and conservation department, said hogs can also host many diseases and parasites, including hog cholera, psuedorabies, brucellosis, tuberculosis, salmonellosis, anthrax, ticks, fleas, lice and various flukes and worms. “With their fine sense of smell, wild hogs can find and consume young domestic livestock, including poultry, lambs and goats. Millions of dollars are spent each year to prevent damage from hogs.”
