Guinea Pigs Pet Resource Center

Guinea pigs have adapted well to our average domestic room temperatures. The guinea pigs found today in the wilds of Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Paraguay are very similar to our domesticated guinea pigs, but not exactly the same. Guinea pigs have been and still are used for food in South America. Guinea pigs make an excellent pet for a responsible child. Children must always be taught how to hold a guinea pig correctly and should never be left unsupervised with a pet. Vegetarians / Grain eaters Commercially prepared timothy hay based guinea pig diets are available at all pet stores. Just like humans, guinea pigs are incapable of manufacturing vitamin C in their own bodies. Guinea pigs should also receive a guinea pig vitamin C supplement daily. Guinea pigs are very picky, and changes in food and water tastes are not often welcomed or well tolerated. A vitamin C supplement manufactured for guinea pigs is a must as a daily supplement. “A wire-sided cage measuring at least 40L” x 20W” x 20H” is a good size cage for one or two guinea pigs. GLASS ENCLOSURES SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR GUINEA PIGS; they are highly susceptible to heat stroke and glass cages hold in too much heat and humidity for a guinea pig. Guinea pigs are very shy creatures with a strong flight instinct. Healthy guinea pigs have a rounded, full body and smooth, even fur with no bald patches.

Small Pet Profile: Guinea Pigs

Characteristics: Naturally social and living in large groups in the wild, guinea pigs need involved owners who provide them with a variety of toys and exercise opportunities. Cavies would prefer a companion, though most will do well alone if kept active. The average adult female grows to 1-1/2 to 2 lbs, while the average male grows to 2 to 2-1/2 lbs. Like other rodents, their teeth grow throughout their lifetime, which averages anywhere between 4 to 8 years. Appearance: There are 13 recognized breeds of cavies with varying fur coat lengths in a variety of solid, mixed, and banded colors. Most of these 13 breeds are variations of each other – Abyssinian, American, Peruvian, Silkie, and Teddy each have a Satin variety, which means the two breeds look similar though a Satin has a more glossy sheen and softer coat. 1 Preventable Health Problem: Prevent Vitamin C deficiency with a specially formulated pellet diet that includes a daily, fresh supply of grass hay and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Housing: Some recommend that one cavy needs at least 3 square feet of cage space, but bigger is always better. Furnish a hiding place and toys for your guinea pig’s health and happiness. Guinea pigs also need a lot of chewable, hard substances to keep their teeth worn down. A solid base in the cage along with suitable nontoxic bedding are also a must to protect both your cavy and her tender feet.

Google calls for guinea pigs for ambitious ‘Baseline’ health study

Google’s latest project from its Google X “Moonshot” division is every bit as ambitious as some of its robotics and communications projects like Glass. Google wants to map how the human body behaves when it’s healthy, which could dramatically improve modern medicine. Google’s study will initially take 175 volunteers from various groups of ethnicity, habit and area and conduct testing of methods and practices to inform a much larger study later on. The study is currently limited to the US, but Google will not say where for fear of biassing the study. By keeping the location a secret the study can screen out bias of people specifically seeking out Google’s study, which could skew the results. The man in control of the study is Dr. Andrew Conrad of Google X, but Google is not conducting the experiment alone: Duke University and Stanford University medical schools are working closely with the search giant to design the experiments and study the data. The actual study of participants will be conducted by a clinical partner, which is standard practice for human studies. The study will be run by a doctor at a medical clinic who will be acting as the principle investigator – similar to the professors and doctors that oversee scientific and medical projects in academic labs that employ PhD students – despite Conrad leading the project from Google’s end. Google is providing money to get the project off the ground, in a similar way to other scientific funding bodies. Eventually, Google will also design and develop new wearable technology to monitor the health of participants in the study, providing more data on things like heart rate, blood pressure and possibly going as far as body chemistry as they go about their daily lives – the ultimate quantified self. Google’s vast computing power, used to run its search engine and various other services, also make a big contribution to how effective the study can be. Baseline is being funded by Google X, which was set up to “Focus on problems that affect millions of people in their daily lives and try to tackle them from a completely new perspective”. Google Glass and the company’s self-driving cars are also products of Google X. Google states that the “Research is intended as a contribution to science; it’s not intended to generate a new product at Google.” That sounds altruistic, and it could be, but it could also give Google a route into a lucrative health market much further down the line, not directly from this study or the experiments and data from within it, but from spin-off ideas.

The Guinea Pig State

No one who’s watched developments over that quarter-century should be surprised that, once again, Oregon’s attempt to provide health care coverage to everyone in the state has culminated in a nationally embarrassing failure. In response to Howard’s death, the Oregon legislature embarked on an ambitious attempt to fix the state health care system. The earliest incarnation of the Oregon Health Plan was proposed in 1989, though it went through several iterations before becoming law in 1993.The principal author of the plan was John Kitzhaber, then president of the state senate. In the state legislature, he had opposed funding transplants for Medicaid patients, arguing the money would be better spent on other health care priorities. When given a chance to reform the state’s health care system, Kitzhaber doubled down on his belief that the amount of health care paid for by the state should be limited. Summarizing the Oregon Health Plan, the British Medical Journal explained, “States tend to favour two approaches to control costs in Medicaid: they either pay providers less or reduce the number of people eligible. Oregon rejected both methods and instead opted for a new, bold approach: it would ration the benefits covered under Medicaid.” Kitzhaber believed that rationing health care would be the best of both worlds-it would allow the state to expand Medicaid services to more people and control costs at the same time. The waiver had a patina of bipartisanship-both of Oregon’s moderate Republican senators, Mark Hatfield and Bob Packwood, were enthusiastic supporters of the Oregon Health Plan. One key component of the plan never received a federal waiver: the requirement that employers provide health insurance to all employees. “The state never seriously attempted to get the necessary federal waiver to create the employer mandate portion of the program. Thus, from the start, the OHP became a Medicaid experiment rather than a serious attempt to achieve universal health care coverage.” Clearly, the state was having second thoughts about whether forcing small businesses to provide health insurance would generate inordinate political fallout. Even with rationing, the state sought to further reduce costs and to oversee implementation by herding Medicaid patients into tightly regulated health maintenance organizations contracted by the state. The Oregon Health Plan’s mental health and dental benefits were actually superior to those offered under commercial insurance in the state. ODS Health Plan stopped offering the state plan in three rural counties because of nearly $1 million in losses. “Its budget swelled from $1.33 billion in 1993-1995 to $2.36 billion in 1999-2001,” according to Willamette Week, which also noted that the Oregon Health Plan had prompted “a surge of public hostility toward HMOs.” As if that weren’t enough, Oregon endured arguably the worst state economy in the country during the recession of the early 2000s. According to a 2009 state workforce survey, “Two-thirds of physicians report only sometimes or never being able to find inpatient mental health services for Medicaid patients. That increases to three-quarters for outpatient mental health services.” If serious mental illness is the one area of slight improvement in outcomes, it’s in spite of the fact that those in the Oregon Health Plan have a very hard time getting treatment for mental problems. Meet the new Oregon Health Plan, same as the old failed Oregon Health Plan.

Want to become a human guinea pig?

People who volunteer for these trials can be anyone from a healthy student who needs to make a little extra cash to a desperate cancer patient hoping an experimental drug really can help. Who really volunteers to become a proverbial human guinea pig? And exactly how safe are these trials? A trained professional walks the volunteer through instructions page by page and a volunteer signs off on each one. Gortler is grateful for the volunteers, but he said he personally wouldn’t volunteer, particularly in an early-stage trial. While the drug trial Steve Reszka was a part of didn’t work out, he said he still left the experience feeling good about what he did and he’d volunteer again.

GROOMING RAISING A HEALTHY CAVY BATHING: Long haired cavies are more likely to need the occasional bath than short haired ones. A pair of same sex cavies will be brighter, happier animals than a single cavy. Handle the newcomer after caring for any resident cavy, washing hands and arms well and changing your shirt following any physical contact to help ensure infection is not passed from one cavy to the other. Although new cavies may not like to be picked up and will race around the cage to avoid it, bribery with enticing veggies will help win them over and with patience most cavies will become loving pets who enjoy being cuddled. Alfalfa hay is fine for pregnant, nursing, and young cavies or malnourished adults, but because of high calcium content it should be reserved as a treat for the average adult cavy.

Agriculture Victoria

Guinea pigs require a hutch to live in that is safe from predators such as dogs and cats, has an area that protects them from the weather and provides enough space for exercise. Vitamin C rich foods such as citrus or kiwi fruit are a necessary supplement as, like humans, guinea pigs do not synthesise their own vitamin C. Avoid feeding guinea pigs potatoes, onions, rhubarb leaves and oxalis clover as these species are poisonous. Depending on the breed, guinea pigs can have short, rosette or long hair. If your guinea pig is long haired then regular grooming is necessary for good coat condition. Guinea pigs make great pets but purchasing a guinea pig should be a long term decision as they can live up to seven years.

Why You Should Avoid Eating Pork

The Bible refers to pigs as “Unclean,” while those of Jewish and Muslim faith are known to avoid eating pork entirely. Pork in Your Digestive System Even if, for the sake of an argument, pigs are raised in a completely sanitary environment, eat only the proper food that pigs are meant to eat, do not have to cool themselves from the heat by wallowing in mud, and are, in addition, generally thoroughly supervised and inspected during the entirety of its life, one can still not avoid the fact that the pork that pigs provide is still teaming with numerous unhealthy and toxic substances that will negatively affect your body if consumed. One of the main components used in processing pork is sodium nitrate which, among other things, is used to give pork that deep red color, making the pork look fresher than it actually is. With all of the evidence pointing to the fact that processed pork is bad for your body, a person who still insists on eating pork would think that fresh pork should be the way to go. Pork lovers aren’t going to catch a break with this one either, because even fresh pork has been documented to be just as unhealthy, and sometimes even worse, than processed pork.

Right Pet for You?

Granted, pigs are not as agile as the traditional dog or cat pet. If a pet pig is allowed to exercise regularly, is not overfed, and is examined and vaccinated annually by a veterinarian, she should live to a ripe old age. You need to totally acquaint yourself with the nature of the pig and your responsibilities as a pet pig owner. You can ask a friend or acquaintance who owns a potbellied pig, is happy with her pet, and has a good relationship with her breeder for a referral. A kennel-savvy pig makes a lot of sense for future fun outings or trips to the vet, so you might as well get started on the right foot with crate-training.

NIH study: Glutamine suppresses herpes in mice and guinea pigs

Glutamine supplements can suppress reactivation of herpes simplex virus in mice and guinea pigs, according to findings recently published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Results showed that mice that received glutamine were less likely to have HSV-1 reactivation than those that did not, and similarly, guinea pigs that received glutamine were less likely to have recurrent outbreaks of HSV-2 than those that did not receive the supplement. Evaluation of host cellular gene expression in mice treated with glutamine showed that several genes inducible by interferon gamma had an increased response. Mice treated with glutamine also had high numbers of virus-specific T cells in infected nerve tissues. Glutamine supplementation suppresses herpes simplex virus reactivation.

Invokana Maker Turned Health Care Consumers into Guinea Pigs

This is the cause of action in the growing number of lawsuits against drug companies, such as those naming Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Mitsubishi Tanabe, the makers and sellers of the diabetic drug Invokana. The specific side effect that was the subject of the warning – ketoacidosis – had started showing up in FDA reports only a few weeks after approval. Scientists expressed concern about Invokana and possible links to more harmful side effects that include kidney failure, pancreatitis, heart disease and osteoporosis. This, in essence, turned health care consumers into experimental guinea pigs. Invokana is part of a new class of drugs, known as SGLT-2 inhibitors.

A Vet’s Guide To Life: Guinea Pig Skin Issues

Looked like a typical mite infestation; skin flakes coming off, some scabby bits where she had scratched/bitten and made it bleed. In my experience the huge majority of skin issues in guinea pigs falls into two categories: mites and fungal. It’s uncommon for me to see flaking skin and hair loss without it being one of these disorders. Skin mites in these pets will always cause itching, sometimes severe enough to lead to seizures. Though guinea pig skin cases are usually pretty straight-forward, you can get cases that stump even the best general practitioner.
