Rabies

Rabies is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies. Treatment after rabies exposure consists of a dose of human rabies immune globulin administered as soon as possible after exposure, plus 4 doses of rabies vaccine given over two weeks. A person who has already been vaccinated for rabies and is exposed to rabies must receive two booster vaccine doses three days apart immediately after exposure. If treatment is initiated promptly following a rabies exposure, rabies can be prevented. If a rabies exposure is not treated and a person develops clinical signs of rabies, the disease almost always results in death.

Pfizer: One of the world’s premier biopharmaceutical companies

Vaccines have significantly reduced the threat of diseases that were once widespread and oftentimes fatal. Today, more people benefit from safe and efficacious vaccines than ever before – and the list of diseases that vaccines can help prevent continues to grow. Vaccines prevent infections from serious, life-threatening diseases and they can also help reduce health care costs to both patients and the broader health care system by reducing the incidence of vaccine-preventable illness. The development of vaccines to prevent serious disease is an extraordinary story of medical achievement – one in which Pfizer and its ‘legacy’ companies have played a critical role for more than a century. Today, Pfizer is helping to usher in a new era of vaccine innovation – both to prevent and treat disease.

The Truth about Pet Pigs

What is the truth about the new craze of “Teacup,” “Micro-mini” and other super-small pigs such as the “Royal Dandy.” They are just so cute and many movie stars are buying them up. Back in the mid 1980’s when the Viet Nam pigs were brought over to Canada and then down into the United States, people thought they would stay small because they were being bred young and sold young. The good thing that did happen to the potbellied pigs was when they did get them smaller, the veterinarians would give an average range of 80 to 140 pounds as being normal. Today we have over three hundred pig sanctuaries and rescues across the USA. Most are 501(c)(3) non-profits and all are now bulging at the seams and over-flowing with unwanted pigs that don’t stay forty pounds. Many backyard breeders are now breeding them with other type of pigs, and of course they get a lot larger.

Functional Amino Acids in Growth, Reproduction, and Health

The classic concept of “Ideal protein” must be modified to include all NEAA. Regulatory role for AA in gene expression and protein turnover Regulatory effects of certain AA on gene expression may be mediated by transcription factors, specific regulatory sequences in the promoter, and various cis elements distinct from AA response elements or nutrient sensing response elements. Dietary arginine supplementation reduced mRNA levels for fatty acid binding protein 1, glycogenin, protein phosphotase 1B, caspases 1 and 2, and hepatic lipase, but increased expression of PPAR-γ, heme oxygenase 3, glutathione synthetase, insulin-like growth factor II, sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor, AMP-activated protein kinase, and stress-induced protein in white adipose tissue of diet-induced obese rats. The mammalian target of rapamycin, a highly conserved serine/threonine protein kinase, is the master regulator of mRNA translation; mTOR is also known as FK506 binding protein 12-rapamycin associated protein 1. The potential for FAA to stimulate protein synthesis indicates that these nutrients play important regulatory roles beyond serving as building blocks of proteins. Maximum deposition of dietary AA as body proteins should be achieved for children who experience growth retardation due to inadequate intake of protein or disease.

Levamisole stimulates proliferation of circulating and intestinal immune cell subsets, gut health and performance in weaned pigs

Novel strategies to prevent/control such diseases include numerous biologic and synthetic preparations, which are capable of reducing the harmful effects of early weaning of pigs and protecting pigs against enteric infections, particularly CD/CE. With the growing knowledge of the porcine gut immune system and its endogenous modulation, particularly the development of both innate and adaptive immunity at the mucosal surfaces, which is critical in preventing the harmful effects of intestinal pathogens, it has been clearly stated that exogenous specific/nonspecific immunomodulation represents an important prophylactic/therapeutic approach in the prevention/treatment of both stress- and ETEC-induced infections accompanied weaning. Pigs weaned at less than 3 wk of age have lower lymphocyte proliferative responses than pigs weaned at an greater age and may have a reduced growth rate as a result of reduced immune protection. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of LEVA given as a single peroral dose to 4-wk-old weaned pigs on: the recruitment of circulating and intestinal immune cell subsets by assessing the proportions of CD45+ lymphoid cells, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and CD21+ B cells in the peripheral blood as well as the number of CD45RA+ naive lymphoid cells residing their ileal mucosa, the incidence/severity of diarrhea by clinical/bacteriological monitoring of their gut health, and productivity/performance parameters, such as body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio during 5 wk after the treatment. In this paperTop of pageMATERIALS AND METHODSRESULTSDISCUSSION «DISCUSSION. The results obtained on the effectiveness of LEVA used as an immunomodulator to: enhance proliferation of peripheral blood and intestinal immune cell subsets, maintain gut health, and improve productivity and performance of 4-wk-old weaned pigs based on the study during period of 5 wk postweaning were generally in agreement with many of our previous observations and by others. Based on these comparisons we have concluded that LEVA is shown in our study to be effective as an immunostimulating agent for recruitment of circulating and intestinal immune cell subsets tested, and thus, could be of importance in establishing the resistance of weaned pigs to enteric infections which resulted in the reduction of incidence/severity of postweaning diarrheal disease, prevention/control of losses due to enteric infections, maintenance of their gut health and more efficient productivity/performance parameters.

Institute for Responsible Technology

On May 19th, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine called on “Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community, and the public to avoid GM foods when possible and provide educational materials concerning GM foods and health risks.” They called for a moratorium on GM foods, long-term independent studies, and labeling. AAEM’s position paper stated, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. Among the population, biologist David Schubert of the Salk Institute warns that “Children are the most likely to be adversely effected by toxins and other dietary problems” related to GM foods. AAEM states, “Multiple animal studies show significant immune dysregulation,” including increase in cytokines, which are “Associated with asthma, allergy, and inflammation”-all on the rise in the US. According to GM food safety expert Dr. Arpad Pusztai, changes in the immune status of GM animals are “a consistent feature of all the studies.” Even Monsanto’s own research showed significant immune system changes in rats fed Bt corn. People can stay away from anything with soy or corn derivatives, cottonseed and canola oil, and sugar from GM sugar beets-unless it says organic or “Non-GMO.” There is a pocket Non-GMO Shopping Guide, co-produced by the Institute for Responsible Technology and the Center for Food Safety, which is available as a download, as well as in natural food stores and in many doctors’ offices.

Public Health and Medical Entomology

Other species of fleas that are parasites of rodents are involved in the transmission of plague and murine typhus, both of which occur in the southwestern U.S. You are encouraged to learn more about the biology of fleas, especially the cat flea, so that you can make more informed decisions about health risks to you and your pets, how to avoid being bitten, how to prevent or suppress infestations, and whether flea control is warranted in and around your residence. The presence of flea bites on a person suggests that the home is supporting the development of flea larvae, which can be a continuous source of adult fleas that then infest your pets. Pet owners contribute to the success of cat fleas by failing to monitor their pets for the presence of adult fleas and by failing to practice sanitation methods that reduce the development of flea larvae. The following Web site is recommended for accurate and detailed information on fleas of public health risk, including information on plague and murine typhus, and the chigoe flea, Tunga penetrans. A recent textbook by G. Mullen and L. Durden, Medical and Veterinary Entomology, has an excellent chapter devoted to fleas and flea-borne diseases that cover biology, behavior, medical and veterinary risk, and general information on prevention and control.

TESTIMONY. OF. VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA. PRESENTED BY. RICHARD F. WEIDMANDIRECTOR OF GOVERNMENT RELATIONS. AND. DR. LINDA SPOONSTER SCHWARTZCHAIR, VVA HEALTHCARE COMMITTEE. BEFORE THE. SENATE VETERANS AFFAIRS COMMITTEEREGARDING. MILITARY EXPOSURES: THE CONTINUING CHALLENGES OF CARE AND COMPENSATION. JULY 10, 2002 Mr. Chairman, Ranking Member Specter, distinguished members of the committee, Vietnam Veterans of America is very pleased to have the opportunity to share our views with you today on a topic that has been at the very core of VVA’s mission from day one: investigating toxic exposures among America’s veterans. If we are to be certain that all data that may effect the health of American veterans is to be available for the veterans and their physicians, the Congress must create such a standing declassification review panel immediately. The components of the initiative will be a provider education program leading to certification in veterans’ health; a comprehensive military history that will be coded in a registry and be available for education, outcomes analysis, and research; a database for any veteran to register his military history and to automatically receive updated and relevant information on issues of concern to him/her; and a Web site where any veteran or health care provider can access the latest scientific evidence on the health effects of military service. New objectives featured DoD’s commitment to the health and welfare of Gulf War veterans as well as current and future service members and veterans. The national organization Vietnam Veterans of America is a non-profit veterans membership organization registered as a 501(c)(19) with the Internal Revenue Service.

The effect of a natural feed additive, containing sanguinarine, on the performance and health status of weaning pigs

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of Sangrovit®, a plant-derived feed additive, given throughout the nursery stage via feed at 15 ppm and 50 ppm, on the health status and performance of weaners against negative controls. In a 900-sow farrow-to-finish farm, a total of 864 piglets were divided into three groups: negative controls; Sang 15: same feed as NCs, plus 15 g Sangrovit® /t of feed; Sang 50: same feed as NCs plus 50 g Sangrovit® /t of feed. The results indicated that administration of 50 ppm-Sangrovit® had the most beneficial effects on growth performance in weaning pigs. Specifically there was increase of body weight and average daily gain, as well as reduction of feed conversion ratio. Blood analysis from the Sang groups and especially the Sang 50 group revealed low values of haptoglobin and serum amyloid A..

Deoxynivalenol Impairs Weight Gain and Affects Markers of Gut Health after Low-Dose, Short-Term Exposure of Growing Pigs

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a short-term, low-dose DON exposure on various gut health parameters in pigs. Piglets received a commercial feed or the same feed contaminated with DON for 10 days, and two hours after a DON bolus, weight gain was determined and samples of different segments of the intestine were collected. Even the selected low dose of DON in the diet negatively affected weight gain and induced histomorphological alterations in the duodenum and jejunum. The mRNA expression of different tight junction proteins, especially occludin, of inflammatory markers, like interleukin-1 beta and interleukin-10 and the oxidative stress marker heme-oxigenase1, were affected along the intestine by low levels of DON in the diet. Taken together, our results indicate that even after low-level exposure to DON, which has been generally considered as acceptable in animal feeds, clinically-relevant changes are measurable in markers of gut health and integrity.

Health Care Renewal: Heparin Made Out of Pigs from Elsewhere

The heparin all carried the Baxter International label, but its “Active ingredient,” that is, the heparin itself, was purchased from Scientific Protein Laboratories LLC, which in turn obtained it from a factory in China operated by Changzhou SPL, which in turn was owned by Scientific Protein Laboratories and by Changzhou Techpool Pharmaceutical Co. Furthermore, it turns out that the factory was never inspected by either the US Food and Drug Administration or its Chinese counterpart. The raw heparin made by China’s myriad small producers ends up in the hands of about 50 export companies, which sell to customers overseas. Although Scientific Protein Laboratory did not get the heparin it sold to Baxter International from Yuan Changkun, it appears that the management of SPL did not know much about the heparin it supplied. So to recap so far, Baxter International got the heparin that it sold under its label from SPL, which got the heparin from Changzhou SPL in China, which got the heparin from several wholesalers, which got the heparin from numerous, unnamed small factories. Reckless outsourcing of drug production, failure of US pharmaceutical companies to control and be responsible for how and where the drugs they market were made, and the FDA’s failure to monitor drugs sold with US company labels but made somewhere else threaten a crisis of confidence that could have dire consequences for US health care.
